    It’s important to reseal any cracks in your asphalt driveway to prevent further damage from vegetation, like you see here in my driveway. It’s also important to fill these cracks as water will get in here and slowly erode the base aggregate. Once winter comes, any water that made it ways through the cracks and under the pad, the resulting ice could cause pieces of the driveway to break away and the surface could even start to heave or sink. I’ll be getting my driveway professionally sealed in a few days, so I decided to save some money and do this part of the job myself. The pros quoted me $650, but I’ll be doing it for $40.
    In today’s demonstration, I’ll be using the following:
    1. A flat head screwdriver or similar tool to help loosen any packed soil, debris, or weak pieces of rock from the asphalt. This will be your first line of attack.
    2. A steel brush to remove any packed in soil or dirt and to help clean up the cracked area.
    3. A soft brush to sweep away any material in the crack or around my working area.
    4. A blow torch to kill any vegetation I am unable to successfully remove by hand.
    5. A paint-stick to help smoothen out the filter material once it’s poured into the cracks. A 2” or 4” putty knife would work equally well.
    6. An air compressor to blow out any dead grass or unwanted particles from within the crack. This is probably the most useful tool once the debris and rocks in the crack are loosened with the screwdriver.
    7. You’re going to want safety glasses because that compressor can really make the sand and dirt fly everywhere.
    8. Also, gloves are important, so don’t forget those.
    9. Lastly, the fill that I am using today is called Speed-Fill by Black Jack. It comes in a container about 1 gallon in size or 3.4 liters. It costs about $20 at my local hardware store. For my project, I will need 2. I’ll add links to similar products from Amazon in the description below. The one I am using, works best on warmer days around 16 degrees Celsius or 61F, or warmer. Smaller cracks will dry and can be driven on within 2 hours while larger cracks will require 5-6 hours.
    The idea is to remove any weeds or moss that could be growing out of the cracks. That flathead screwdriver comes in handy for loosening up the root area and pulling it out. It can also be used to scrape along the crack to loosen up any debris. The idea is to clear out the foreign material so the filler liquid has maximum surface area on each side of the crack to made full contact and seal up that area.
    I’ll give it a little blast with the torch to ensure the root of that dandelion is dead. Same thing for this next weed. I don’t want them coming back in a week or 2. There we go; the screwdriver and the brush really got this crack cleanup up very nice. Let me run over that area with the steel brush ensuring there are no loose rocks.
    Now, for the best tool of all, the air compressor. Let’s blast away any remaining debris like dead grass, leaves, seeds and small rocks.
    The crack is now ready for the filler. Make sure to shake the filler bottle for 3-4 minutes. When you buy this stuff, you can feel the liquid in the top portion of the jug and sludge in the bottom half. It needs to be mixed very well, or it will be too watery with chunks of sludge.
    Opening the jug is a little tricky. Have a piece of paper towel on hand. Remove the cover and place your finger in the tip so it can be easily removed without touching the filler substance on the tip. Clean it up with the paper towel and attach it to the top of the jug. Now cut the tip about a half inch down at a 45-degree angle. Pour the filler liquid into the crack. I like to use that stir stick to broaden the coverage area on each side of the crack to ensure I have a good seal. For larger cracks, the filler will sink and it could even split while it’s drying over the next hour. This is totally normal as the liquid is working its way into the depths of the crack. Reapply a second coating within an hour or 2 to top up the crack. For larger cracks, adding a little sand to the crack will help save on filler solution. I like to top them up about half way so I don’t use as much filler and I still get a large enough surface area on the crack’s sidewalls.
    On this smaller crack, it’s quite simple. After having cleaned it out, the filler is applied and then spread out for surface coverage.
    Once dried, the filler is nice and durable and even on this hot day, a day later, it’s totally dried and hard to the touch. The driveway is now ready to be professionally sealed and I saved myself a handful of cash.

    Take out the nozzle first and flip it around, reinstall the cap with the nozzle pointing outward. Then shake it up and the nozzle will not have hardly any filler on it, if any. 👍🏻

    6:09 Those cracks are not filled enough to make them disappear. I had the same problem with a different brand filler but probably the same stuff. My other problem was there were so many little micro-fine cracks I would probably need to coat as much as 25% of the driveway with filler, twice. Right now I'm looking for someone to just scrape up the entire driveway and repave it.
    I also discovered my 2,500 psi pressure washer with the 0 red tip worked pretty well for cleaning out the plants in the cracks. It sure is much easier and faster than doing it by hand. I was afraid it would damage the asphalt but it seems that particular pressure washer is perfect for that particular job.

    • @chucklutz1002
      @chucklutz1002 8 месяцев назад

      Concur on the pressure washer. I rented a 2,000 PSI unit and used the yellow nozzle and it did a great job of clearing out cracks, and from what I can tell, without damaging the intact surface or making the cracks worse (time will tell if I am right about that). It didn't outright remove weeds, but by removing soil to either side it made many of them easier to hand-pull afterward. My drive is long and slopes gradually downhill, and over the decades has suffered from some "plate tectonics" (or perhaps "glacial movement" is a better description). Thus, it has a mix of what I'll call "horizontal" cracks, that are wider, that go across the driveway, and thinner "vertical" ones running parallel to its course. I cleaned several of the wide horizontal cracks by hand before getting the idea to try the power washer. I have been using Aquaphalt, both the coarse "6.0" and fine "4.0" versions, to fill these major cracks. Aquaphalt is not cheap, but so far it seems to have provided a very solid replacement material. I don't know how to include photos here (or if I could even do it), unfortunately. I did get a couple jugs of "Black Jack" and will probably try it, but only for the fine cracks that are too small for even the fine Aquaphalt. I am not so sure about the Black Jack (or similar) as a general strategy, so I intend to go as far as I can with the Aquaphalt, though it is a much slower process. I am on the fence about sealcoating afterward and need to do more research, as I hear (so far) generally negative reviews, ranging from shoddy performance of sealcoat products and unfortunately common shady ethics among some material manufacturers and/or contractors when it comes to warranties.

      @@chucklutz1002 : Here's another tip I discovered. With poison ivy, forget about mixing up the vinegar and salt solution. Simply take a hedge trimmer and pass it over the stems, cutting off the leaves. The plant will not survive with out those leaves. Yes it may come back next year, but with the hedge trimmer it only takes a few minutes.

      @@chucklutz1002 : I found my red tip is perfect for cleaning out the weeds, it will cut them off without any damage to the asphalt. But my pressure washer is only 2800 PSI. If you have a bigger one you probably need to experiment and see if the red tip will damage your asphalt.

    In the professional bid, what was the material proposed to do the job? Most reputable companies would use a hot rubberized crack sealant which would outperform and outlast any water or acrylic based sealant. In the short term money was saved but if an individual lives in the part of the world where weather changes are drastic the elasticity of a water based cold pour material is sub par and a temporary fix at best.

    The crack sealer dries too smooth, not bumpy like asphalt, so it is easily seen once the asphalt sealer is applied. All the cracks that get patched need to be slightly bumpy in order to make it look like there was never a crack there to begin with... which is half the point in bothering to fill the crack in the first place, if you ask me. Fill the cracks with Aquaphalt or use a thick asphalt sealer made for fixing cracks, like alligator crack sealer, that you can spread with a squeegee so you can feather it in perfectly... not seeing any lines where the crack was is what you want, right? Then make sure the cracks look good, not just "filled". Then use the asphalt sealer and when it dries it will have that "freshly asphalted" look. With no panty lines!! 😎

      I agree…unless the flaw/damage is meant to be noticed, it’d ideally be BLENDED or camouflaged into the surrounding area. I’ve only ever seen the flat, shiny type of repairs, obviously since it’s easier, but IDEALLY, they’d be more aesthetic, rather than scar lines everywhere, like the old C-sections (my mom got 3 of them).

    Was the $650 quote for hot crack fill? Your using a water based pourable crack filler opposes to the propane powered hot crack fill machine with 400 degree oil based crack filler. I charge min $100 for hot and typically with only a few cracks I dont charge for the water based with the seal coat. $650 is a small parking lot.

      The $650 is CAD and it was a large machine which needed time to heated up. If others in my remote area were also interested, the price would have dropped.

      I recently filled my driveway cracks using Latex ite Shallow Trowel Patch (from Home Depot). Around $20 for 2 gallon bucket - the stuff comes out thick and pasty; it can be filled with a trowel (hence the name above) and then smoothed and feathered out. It appears brown and dries to a nice black color with a hard texture similar to what’s described in the above video. Latex ite also makes a liquid crack filler which works well in shallow cracks, but I had some deeper ones so the Trowel patch worked better to fill the crevices. Hope this helps.

    You get what you pay for. Even with the driveway sealed in about a month your cracks will be open. The worst part of that brand of crack filler is after the first rain.. The black dye will wash away and all the crack filler will turn a grayish white on your nice black sealed driveway. Just letting you know from experience. My advice would be have a professional hot crack fill for longevity.

    • @your8146
      @your8146 3 года назад +1

      I would recommend calling a different company about the cracks. Measure your cracks.. Usually professionals charge $2 a ft for hot crack filling unless they have a minimum price. If that is still to expensive. Crack sticks work for a diy'er.

      It’s actually “asphaltic cement pavement” or as professional road builders call it, ACP. When you run crud oil through the refinery a couple of times, stripping out all the different grades of fuels and oils, what’s left at the bottom of the tank is asphalt.

    I’m trying place your accent. I think I hear an Irish lilt + American accent, maybe more? So, an Irish expat/immigrant who’s been in the States for decades? 🤔

    • @DIYandSAVE
      @DIYandSAVE  7 месяцев назад +1

      You have a good ear. I am from Newfoundland, Canada which was settled by the Irish in the early 1800s. The accent has evolved a little over the years, but for the most part is still pretty strong. I left Newfoundland 30 years ago but managed to somehow keep the accent.

    • @MoPoppins
      @MoPoppins 7 месяцев назад

      @@DIYandSAVE That’s fascinating-never knew that about Newfoundland! If you left after early childhood, a native accent is usually there to stay, or it’ll often come out when people are tired or inebriated. 😆
      Interestingly, even the mere MENTION of the original locale will often trigger people’s accents. Every time I’ve heard a person who was originally from the South (but was able to COMPLETELY lose their accent) mention that they were from there, they’d go back into the drawl. These were all public figures that I heard on podcasts or in other media, and worked as journalists, actors, musicians.
      I feel unsettled when I can’t place an accent, but am also intrigued by the potential backstory behind it. I’ve heard people w/ a mishmash of American (from various regions of the US), British & Italian accents, and I’d wonder what their upbringing, travels, and settlement have been like.
      It’s peculiar to me how some people don’t pick a certain pronunciation guide and stick with it-they’ll mix British & American vowels in the same sentence. I think that I personally would code switch, but some are just “mutts” with their accents, and by extension, their identities, as well.
      Human development & human psychology (and not just humans)…really interesting stuff! 🧐

    • @DIYandSAVE
      @DIYandSAVE  5 месяцев назад +1

      Agreed, very interesting stuff. When I make a quick visit back to Newfoundland, I notice a change in my accent from day one. I always found languages, dialects and accents interesting and even spent a few years learning French as a second language. In my current environment, I don't use it very often, but I still take advantage of it when I can. That includes, music, TV or a few coworkers that speak the language.

These guys had to bring in the equipment from 30km away, spend an hour heating up the unit, clean the cracks, apply the hot melt and cover their travel, wages and insurances. Given the outcome of my idea, it might have been a better solution. It would have been half the price if a neighbor was also interested.
