While I love to see the highly modified (expensive) rigs, it is great to see something that is within reach of us poor plebs at the bottom end of the scale.
A 2011 model 4.5L V8 turbo diesel troopy is definitely not a cheap vehicle haha
$35k is a whole lot closer to what I can afford than the dream machines like Ronny's truck or Andrew's Troopy.
I'm building a 1997 Jeep TJ. I'm about $4500 Canadian into it. It's built from two Jeeps. My labour was free.

A perfect example to illustrate the point that if you plan ahead, know what you want to do and where you want to go, you can keep things simple and not have to break the bank while building your vehicle.

Sandra and Peter have done the most amazing adventures in a vehicle most viewers of this channel would call 'a good vehicle to start the build. With no experience and zero knowledge of Australia they have managed to show their viewers more places in this amazing country in a well edited thoughtful and respectful way than most of us will ever see. They should be very proud of what they have achieved (so far). A big shout out to Ronny as well for being gracious enough to feature them and their channel in his time. You didn't need to do that mate, Good on ya.

Not a very "modified" vehicle but a great episode nonetheless. Great to see that touring vehicles don't need to be twinlocked and stacked with 4" lifts, LED lightbars and 35s ;)

One of the best offroad hacks ever mentioned in this video, using Google maps for offroad tracks. Seriously, if your phone GPS is decent, check out all the tracks you can find that were once the sole domain of paid navigation apps & devices. I've ran mine alongside the Hema navigator app & it's far more accurate in some places. Give it a go, seriously & you'll be surprised 👍

Very good they have got this far with the Troopy with no problems mentioned . I hope they know the golden rule of the outback , if they break down or get stuck stay with the vehicle at all times :-)

There was a bloke in Germany who traveled the world on a Yamaha XT500 for years, in the seventies, his conclusion was, get a bed sheet put on it everything you think you are going to need, then..... halve it, then halve it again, and you'll find when you get back you had a lot of stuff you never used and or needed, the "KISS" (keep it simple stupid)system has always served me well having traveled extensively in Europe, Australia and North Africa. keep your weight and horse power to a minimum, to much tends to break things not to mention the largest expense when traveling, fuel use.

Only thing with having a fire extinguisher close to the drivers side is what happens if it comes loose and goes underneath the brake or accelerator
+Steve Adams it is very secure and bolted down. It won’t be coming loose unless you unhitch two latches

I modified an old PZJ75 Troopy on the public parking space in front of my flat in Rotterdam (Netherlands) as cheap as possible, and used it to drive all the way from The Netherlands to Cape Town, South Africa, on my own. www.cruisecanary.com
An awesome experience, which took me exactly one year. I learned so much about cars, off-roading and overlanding (didn't know ANYTHING about that stuff before the journey!), and especially how little you actually need.

Been looking at setting up a 4x4, minimal setup. A foot-well water-tank 200lt is a viable option for water
Not sure I'd be thinking about adding 200kg weight to a vehicle unless I knew I absolutely needed that amount of water, certainly not in a minimal set up anyway. Unless there's 4 adults in the vehicle for 10 days in the middle of the desert, you probably won't be away from water sources long enough to ever go through that amount. Work on 7l per person per day for 2 people, 6l each per day for 3 & 5l per person per day for 4 people & you'll be fine for serious remote outback travel 👍
True, but generally speaking you have no way of knowing, just like I don't in my 50l flexible bladder, however I've never gone through that & a 20l jerry on my remotest trip before getting to more drinking water so couldn't recommend adding potentially 200kg to any vehicle when 50 will do 😀
You do like water!! You're absolutely correct in saying each to their own when it comes to things like that, & you've clearly identified a need to have that amount of water on board, but, with the greatest of respect, I'd say you're in a very small minority with a need for that amount. I still stand by my point that adding 200kg to your vehicle for any one thing is something that should be considered very carefully. Just because you can fit something in your vehicle, doesn't mean you necessarily should as it may well be far more liveable with some more space in there. Also uprating your suspension doesn't magically make the weight disappear, it's still there affecting fuel economy & causing wear on weight bearing components. I'd say most people's overland rigs are probably heavy enough to be close to GVM before even adding food, water & passengers so it's definitely something to be careful on.

Touring AUS on a budget? might be cheaper than some other more modified overlanders but a reasonably new V8 troopy and an ARB fridge.. thats a pretty decent budget.

Bit of a late post, but a couple things I may have missed but quite important, more so as they are living and travelling in a vehicle, but this is something that is a major issue in our country (NZ) no toilet setup, did I miss that? And a shower? Both can be done cheap and both imo if travelling and living essential, both for impact on locations and especially towns you may take advantage of doing this at, many many areas are coming under high stress here and allot of anti vehicle camping, anti attitudes are getting louder-which affects the rest of us too. Not saying these guys aren’t good, they seem really nice as most are, but allot aren’t, I see it everywhere I go and even our own nationals are just as bad, last Xmas at one location not a camp but a great spot on a river, I filled up 5 bags full of rubbish others left behind which I dumped at the Ranger stn, showed them pictures of both fecal waste paper everywhere and what I had cleaned up rubbish wise, inclu many broken bottles and this family had kids amazingly. 2 reasons I did this, for some reason I took they’re number plates earlier that week even though we weren’t really close, 2 this is a Ranger patrolled region, but no rangers ever checked these areas and at leak times like Xmas summer that’s imo they’re job, for fire Hazard and this type of issue.
I have seen vehicles from overseas visitors on living working visas, drive in late at night in other spots leave early in the morning and where they camped the night are plastic bags of rubbish for the rest of us to take out, if we don’t take that out, we get blamed and those spots are then at risk. This should be a topic Ron if you haven’t already done one, as it’s a growing problem, we want all people to experience the freedom of travelling etc, but for everyone’s future travels it must be responsible at this level at least, the cost to clean up is horrendous as well as impact to places and people. Sorry for that but I didn’t notice it mentioned and I think this is a very overlooked part of touring or living in a vehicle while travelling, Cheers.

+james dickson I’d say public shower blocks and beach showers would be the go to. When you do look around for one you’d be surprised how many there are around.

I don't understand why people use wood in RV's caravans and 4wd's.It's not a terrible material but why not use light weight strong durable long lasting aluminium? It's thin and you can make alot more out of it and you can bend it?
More expensive & harder to cut with basic tools if you don't want to spend some serious money & have unnecessary tools for your trip hanging around your vehicle or get rid of them to a local market.

Depending on weight, we managed to do between 12-14L/100km on the road. Off road is a different story :)

Traveling on a budget and the first thing you buy is 135k worth of LandCruiser, is this a joke
cb/ham radio is a must as is sat comms as past most city limits mobiles are useless
you have a nice setup though the lack of comms and given the average distance between towns and cities can be between 200-600+KM's you really risk your lives without the correct comms preps, I'm very surprised that the cops in certain areas haven't forbade you from their district without the correct comms equipment..

.b. risking the lives of the rescue team sent to find your sorry arse when you break down or get lost..
I'm sick and tired seeing people ill-equipped to travel within the australian outback with the amount of remote areas within the australian land mass can well be killed if you loose your vehicle..
this is nothing but a back packers conversion and a dangerous 1 at that
i have met back packers doing bog laps around australia and from my experience they should never leave the metro area because they aren't equipped for traveling...
Jason howe hah, no worries mate, i agree with having adequate emergency equipment while travelling remote. we (troopy) had our Spot gps tracker, with worldwide emergency rescue cover insurance. it just wasn't advertised in the video. I hope you're alright :)
Your comments are dangerous and misleading Jason. I live and work in the Kimberley and we travel in extremely remote places where a Sat phone is the only thing that works. You really need to think about the difference between what you think you know and what your experiences actually are.

Roamin Emperor, note I did sat based comms as a part of the communications package as even with a mobile phone booster you are still limited..
I also recommended uhf/27 MHz CB due to the unwritten rule of trucks have the right of way..
the reason why I recommend hf radio because of the royal flying doctors service as hf radios typically within this specification can fetch between $1500-2500 where as a basic hf rig can between $750-1,500 and can support rfd ..
Also note: you are also dangerous if you are just in reliance of sat phone as a primary source of communications..
the way I look sat comms like this I look at both at sat phone/tv/internet as part of my communications package because outside of most major/minor towns tv reception is non existent in most cases and you will be needing access to the weather channel to monitor weather..
I have no clue on what your radio in regards to cb and ham radio is I've been around cb and ham radios in 1 form or another since i was 5-6 years old and well know of their limitation though i still wouldn't be without them non the less..
From what I have seen with international backpackers with their mentality and some aussies as well who decide the bog trip around Australia tend to be ill equipped in terms of communications packages and seem to rely on mobile phones as primary sources of communications all be it a false sense of security at best..
To be honest Roamin Emperor if you are solely relying on a sat phone as a primary source of communication then you are nothing but a danger on the road, as no cb comms makes you a danger not only to yourself but other road users including heavy haul and road trains.
on the side note if you want anything past 4-5 watts UHF/vhf you will likely want ham radio license outside of convoy use..
I hate to say this whilst you have some knowledge on radio it is rather limited at best, I have no clue what you base your radio experience on though for long range on 27MHz it's ssb or upper side band that is required..
you only ever use 4 watts in convoy..
though the biggest issue for both reception and transmission is having the receive and reception portion of your antenna high enough to give you 180 degrees of reception and making sure the only thing that is transmitting is the top part of the antenna and not the feeding cable..
and note I did mention sat as part of my comms prep though I didn't go into full detail of it in my last response, though it is a redundancy feature at best and wouldn't be without it regardless..
as for gps maps I would likely take a leaf out of ronny dahl's book and run 2 having 1 in base look and 1 with detailed mapping topographical.. with a map and compass as a reserve backup as technology can fail at the best of times..
If you can get hold of region maps most current is good as is older maps as what isn't listed on 1 will be listed on the other ..
