I Suck at Starcraft 2 - Episode 15 - Covered in Zerglings

  • I Suck at Starcraft 2 is a tutorial series aimed at new/low-level players using the weapon of hindsight to analyse what could have been done better in my games and why they turned out the way they did.
    In this matchup, I try to be too clever, screwing up my build order completely and then getting drowned in zerglings by an interesting double-hatchery strategy.

    @KHfanz Queens can do a few things. They can periodically "inject" extra larva on your hatcheries, which lets you create more units. They can also transfuse other units, which is a heal, and they can spawn creep tumors, which help spread creep. They can attack both air and ground targets, as well, and though they don't do great damage they do have decent range.

    In this situation you want to get a sentry and force filed your ramp then teck into robotics and get some colossus that will fry the zerglings then you get a Stargate and get Void Ray's and with the zerg players lack of anti air you can take out there queen and main base while they struggle at not being able to get into your base thus making any number of zerglings worthless. btw Great vids keep them coming!

    @xelibri21 Because some people live in an imaginary bubble whereby they experience Starcraft 2 entirely through the eyes of a tournament commentator, ignoring the fact that the vast majority of players are nowhere near that good because they don't practice 12 hours a day.

    Second hatchery in your main is a fantastic counter to 2gateway rush if you see it coming, especially if you scout it early ie: see both gateways being made and you've already got your pool being made.

    Probably is really used to playing brood war where it was actually good to have two hatcheries in base.Expanding at 15 supply after a 14 pool is the standard strat used by IdrA, it can work against any build including 2 gate pushes and cheeses as long as you scout before hand. It gives you the biggest advantage against the other two races in the mid-game and you can transition to about anything.

    Thwarts most early agression tactics. The forge is extreamly beneficial too for the plus one weapon upgrade. Crushes zerglings. Ty for that tip TB :D

    I prefer to expand to completely random locations, if my enemy knows where I am on a big map.
    That often makes him believe that I'm on one base and won't have as much resources as I do.
    That also forces his army to go out of its way to destroy it, which makes his main vulnerable to my army.

    Double hatch lings is an all in plan, but worth it. He micro'd the lings well on defence, but then just A-moved them in the counterattack.

  • @BoxStudioExecutive
    @BoxStudioExecutive 14 лет назад

    @DreadAle Actually it's pretty standard to get an inbase hatch when speedling rushing because 1 hatch+queen is not going to produce lings at a faster rate than you gather minerals, assuming you saturated the mineral line.

  • @Danceofmasks
    @Danceofmasks 14 лет назад

    @TheMeta88
    I agree.
    It looks like if the zealots had just dashed right into the zerg main, there's a very good chance he would have won.
    If the drones run, take down the queen. She can't outrun zealots and is a large part of the zerg economy.
    The problem is the inevitable counterattack. The position of the forward buildings is difficult to defend.
    Personally, I think 2gate zealot rush is more difficult to pull off than 4gate.

    Note to new zerg players: There is no reason to build additional hatcheries in your base as an opening build. If you are going to spend the 400(?) minerals on a hatchery, you might as well build it at your natural expansion to have increased resource collection. The only time this may be useful is if you are completely contained and are unable to spend all of your resources.

  • @totally_not_a_troll
    @totally_not_a_troll 14 лет назад

    2 hatc in the main base, while not seen very often, is actually a good zerg build. You mine enought minerals to make one without having to sacrifice economy but it does deny you an early expansion. It is safer this way, you have better production but the idea is ... win without needing to expand (1 base 2 hatch zerg I believe it's called)

  • @CLtrackStar4
    @CLtrackStar4 14 лет назад

    TotalHalibut, your placement wasn't actually bad at all. When you had the Zealots in his base, your placement was great inbetween the Hatchery and Spawning Pool so the Zerglings couldn't get a surround on you. Your placement at your Gateways wasn't bad either, the only thing that made the difference was for one, you didn't have any Photon Cannons or Stalkers to sit back and have ranged support. Two, its takes about 4 Zerglings to kill a Zealot, and he had about 5 for each Zealot that you had.

    Whenever you find yourself with an abundance of resources, spend them immediately. Even if you're spending them wrong, at least you'll have something. Like, if you get supply blocked when you're massing zealots, throw down another gateway and immediately chrono boost them when you get unblocked :X!

    Just a note: when you attacked that hatchery with your zealots, and the zerglings rushed in, you had a pretty good position between that hatchery and the spawning pool. What you should have done is walled in-between those two buildings and you probably could have taken that fight no problem.

  • @SmolSnake
    @SmolSnake 14 лет назад

    I think attempting to 2-gate rush was executed alright. Unfortunately, the zerg player had his queen before you hit his base. During the zerg attack at 7:20, you retreat for too long and too far back; during this time, 3 of our zealots lose shields and you take 4 zealots of out range. In summary, it boiled down to attacking too late (that initial supply block issue) and maybe mis-microing at the end.

  • @smocca462
    @smocca462 14 лет назад

    You could have held the zerglings off at the end had you just lined up your zealots in two or three rows at the choke and put them on hold position. You'd have been able to reinforce the line for at least long enough for your cannons to finish. Zealots + cannons blocking that entrance would hold off an infinite number of zerglings especially if you added some stalkers once your cc finished.

    It refers to the supply count you have when you build it. And SC1 is pretty different, so i'm not sure about the tactics for it. I've tried using some of them that I've picked up from these videos, but they don't seem to translate very well into Sc1 but that might be because I'm very new to it.

    This is just a little tip, not as a 'you suck you should be pro and do this'.. but just a little tip.
    Zealots PWN lings in chokes, the smaller the choke, the more your zlots are worth. For example, if you stuck your zlots in between that mineral patch, then it would have been a much closer fight between the lings and the zlots.
    But more importantly, if you see his build again, make 1 more pylon at your choke, and put 1-2 zlots there on hold, so the lings have to fight the lots 1-2 at a time.

    @DeusExInfernus actually they can. Skill level/rank doesn't mean that they're stupid and can't think about strategies. I've seen master and diamond players that only do all in builds and cheeses. They'll never be able to tell you what macro is and they most likely learned 3-4 tactics from videos/forums (not their own)+ how to cheese. Some even do 2 rax only, marine all ins only, canons/proxy only, etc. Look at the top masters/diamond right now that aren't zerg (mostly under 7-8 min games)

    Now you might ask, why not build the hatchery at your natural, so that you get more production and you have the option to mine there if wanted? Well, the simple answer is that early on, it's unprotected, making it in your main is much safer.
    So while I agree that most of the time it would make more sense to build it early (zerg always gets second hatchery early, for prodution reasons as said previously), it CAN be better to build it in your main.
