      Hi, I'm trying to understand the difference (or overlap) between trauma/psychogenic mutism, selective mutism and NVLD. How do I distinguish between them please? Does it make any difference? Can trauma result in NVLD? What specialist do I need? I have diagnosed PTSD in remission with my earliest trauma at 3 1/2yrs with no reported regressions (but this may not have been identified in the early 80s as I didn't attend pre-school). My "stuck" symptom is that my voice/mind "freezes" when there is a non-consensual expectation of me to ask, invite, speak, negotiate or sing, especially by persons known to me at the time of the traumatic experience. The NVLD description resonates with me far more than asp. syndrome. Any help is appreciated!

    Recently the comedian Chris Rock found out he has NVLD and I was listening to him on a morning radio show. When he described it I said OMG that's my son. I'm in California and my son has always been apart of the special ed program at school since 2nd grade. He is now 27 years old with a BA in Journalism and a minor in Political Science from the University of Nevada, Reno Class of 2015. He was apart of the disability services program there. His grade school always told me he had A.D.D and that he was just also a slower learner. I told my son to listen to the broadcast of Chris Rock. Well today he calls me all excited like Mom Mom that's me‼️ I have a Non Verbal Learning Disorder. I said a what? He goes the same thing Chris Rock has. He said I went on RUclips and researched it and found all kinds of videos. I told him to send me the videos and he sent me yours. Yes, you described my son to a tee with the list at the bottom and some of the list at the top for NVLD. I'm so happy we can finally put a name to it. Thank you thank you so much. My son is so happy and relieved. He just kept saying Mom I'm not slow. See I'm not a slow learner. My son has always done gotten good grades in school it was just a struggle for him. Mainly like the list says Math was so hard for him especially the word problems.

    I have non verbal learning disability symptoms . I had thought I was ADHD or Autistic. I am 52 years old and seeing this now. I have trouble with jobs and I do not drive. I feel sad but at least I have more understanding now to see what is going on. I thought it was also PTSD. My dad used to yell at me RIGHT!! I said RIGHT! and I didn't understand. I always needed the teacher's help with art projects that were dimensional and I get lost a lot. Lol. This makes many things clear to me. I always needed help with assembling things. My daughter assembled the futon couch. I tried and put things backwards. My new juicer just fell apart and I said this only has a few pieces and I do not know how to put it together that's when I felt compelled to look up learning disabilities and found out. I would freeze up throughout my life and feel so estranged and awkward but thanks to God. Thanks be to God because he is AWESOME.

    I was diagnosed with NVLD when I was 12, but I am decent at math and scored 780/800 on the old SAT (out of 2400). I also believe that I have strong logical reasoning skills, as I scored a 178 on the LSAT and found the logic games portion of the exam to be the easiest section. However, I have a lot of trouble with spacial relationships and organization. I struggled with physics in school (often regarded as an empirical science), and I believe this is due to the fact it is quite an abstract subject, which requires a great deal of visual thinking. My main issue with English is related to my inability to organize/format papers (as opposed to reading/writing abilities). I also have social issues and tend to ramble/lose my train of thought/am hyper-focused on certain topics (to the point of obsession in some cases). I hate physical contact, I have no friends and I wear the outfit every day (I have multiple pairs of the exact same trousers and shirts). People find it strange and they used to make comments when I was in school. People think I am rude and unemotional. I do feel a great deal of empathy, but I have trouble expressing it and often come across as cold/ unanimated/ depressing to be around

    My diagnosis was weird because I was split right in the middle. For NVLD, I’m good at reading and great at writing (according to my family and teachers, and even a few of my friends). For Asperger’s, I struggle in Math, and I have interests in quite a few things (writing, DC comics, forensic science, and learning languages like Spanish and ASL). I am sensitive to some loud things (like yelling or fighting), but not with other loud things (music, especially). I’m not the greatest at social communication, like anyone on the spectrum, but I try to show my empathy, even when it’s too much, despite what many people think about others who are on the spectrum. I know it’s different for everybody on the spectrum, but sometimes I feel I have to figure which one I lean closer to in order to understand myself better. Maybe you guys understand what I’m talking about..?

      Depends on.
      NVLD basically means slow processing, taking extra long time to learn new formulas, to figure things out in unfamiliar settings. But you'll get there eventually, as long as you try really hard.
      New formulas become easier to learn once you become familiar with formulas.
      And NVLD people tend to have great long-term memory.

The disability community recently celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Developmental Disabilities Assistance and Bill of Rights Act, legislation first signed into law by President John F. The law begins with the statement that, “disability is a natural part of the human experience that does not diminish the right of individuals with developmental disabilities to live independently, to exert control and choice over their own lives, and to fully participate in and contribute to their communities through full integration and inclusion in the economic, political, social, cultural, and educational mainstream of United States society.” I and other believe in the unique and inherent worth of who you are, just as you are. Shadi Pahlavi never diagnosed. As a 29 year old I learned that my parents always knew I'm autistic. They wanted to hide it from me and let me be "normal" but they kinda waited for me to have a ton of problems (clean of drugs for 8years), and yet still never planned on telling me.

    I like to give special thanks and recognition to JESPER MARTENSSON for stepping out of his box. As the MARINES would put it, OORAH! The truth about many of these behaviors they are viewed as INTENTIONAL behavioral disorders and they are NOT. These behaviors are classified as UNINTENTIONAL NEUROBEHAVIORAL DISORDERS. People are diagnosed with NLD Syndrome is not EMOTIONALLY DISTURBED. GOOGLE NLD RECOGNITION at WORDPRESS. NLD MOM/cancer survivor

    I found this an interesting video but it was uncomfortable to watch because you talk so slowly, repeat unnecessary things, and sometimes pause unnecessarily at times. I feel like you could have covered the same amount of material in half to one third the time, and I think it would have actually been easier to follow this video because when you pause too much, it makes it harder for me to concentrate because I get bored. If you were to remake a more concise version of this video that communicated the same information in a shorter amount of time, I would really like that!

    Major question here-
    Is NVLD on the autism spectrum?

    • @williamsusser3389
      @williamsusser3389 8 лет назад

      +nakyer It can be, depending on how severe it is.

      Actually, the article, from nearly SIX years ago, spoke of "'autistic-like' conditions, NLD, SPLD, and BAP", and then said (in conclusion) "At the moment, NLD, SPLD, and BAP are not listed as autistic disorders in the DSM."
      Thing is, it also said plainly that NvLD can overlap with Asperger's, which WOULD place it on the spectrum, and yet it plainly says it ISN'T.
      I'd need something far more recent (and far better worded) for an accurate answer, and the above certainly doesn't place NvLD on the autism spectrum.

      No, actually I didn't, and the points I've made have been valid.
      You're not actually following the exchange, and you're trying to turn this into some sort of battle. It never was, and it won't become that now.
      What I came across as was someone looking for up to date valid facts, and I pointed out that the link is old, and that its statements seem to be contradictory.
      How that, in your mind, makes me come across as "entitled", let alone a "prick" is beyond me.
      By any chance are you trolling, because I'll drop this exchange right now if you are.

    I have NVLD and I don't struggle with social reciprocity or empathy. I'm very empathetic. Also plenty of people without either one of these disabilities can have anxiety and depression. This video is crap. Stop generalizing.

      Please remember this video is EIGHT years old, therefore this is outdated advice. My recent research tells me that NVLD does live on the spectrum somewhere, acting like a middle ground diagnosis between high functioning autistic & ADHD. I’m currently pushing to be reassessed…. My diagnosis’s in 2011 were NVLD, dyscalculia & dyslexia…

    I wouldn't exactly call it a learning disability. We are capable of learning.

    • @AuthenticMage
      @AuthenticMage 9 лет назад +16

      A learning disability does not mean that we are not capable of learning. It means that we learn differently than most people. It also means that we may have more difficulty learning in certain ways compared to most people.

      Aurthor Merlin it is a learning disability. Autism is defined by the difficulties in learning social cues, which by the way are automatic, and easy for typicals to acquire.

      Dude....Honestly, I think most "normal" people exist on a spectrum of personality and cognitive function variation...I think the 'learning disability' term isn't necessary in 75% of cases.
