- For anyone who may be searching for the one and done focal length for photo and video -- I hope my experience with the 28mm helps you find what you're looking for. The 28mm to me is THE documentary photographers desert island lens. As always thank you for watching I hope you enjoyed it!!
script:
The Best Focal Length for Documentary.
The following movie was shot on the x100v with the 28mm WLC conversion. You may experience the need to go out and buy a new lens after watching. View Discretion is advised.
This is Louie. Louie is getting ready to go out. In this video, we’re going to talk about the 28mm focal length.
But first lets pack his bottle and get going.
Robert capa once said, if your photos aren’t good enough, you’re not close enough. Theres always going to be exceptions to this rule but think about it, even in the context of conversation. Do you have better conversations in person with someone, or on zoom. Proximity matters to the human, and as a result, you get a better image.
if you have an x100 series camera or any interchangeable lens camera, I recommend picking up a 28mm or the WCL conversion lens.
Hold on, I’m gonna need to help out here. These baby wraps are tricky, but we’re getting there.
Now, about that Coffee.
Chapter 1: Getting Up Close and Personal
Here's the thing about the 28mm - it's not just about the number. It's about how close you can get to your subject while still keeping the bigger picture in frame. Imagine being right in the middle of the action, capturing every detail and context. You can still engage with your subject at friendly distance, while not losing composition. That's what this lens did for me.
The 28mm puts me EXACTLY at the distance I like to be when photographing life around me. It allows me to be close to my subjects but still frame the context, and foreground around them.
Chapter 3: The 28mm Everywhere Connection
Have you ever noticed that most point-and-shoot cameras have a 28mm lens? There's a reason for that. It's the lens for capturing memories and documenting your life. You can get close and still get a tighter shot, but also have a wide enough frame to get a group shot in a coffee shop. The 28mm is the universal storyteller lens, and frankly, I can’t believe it took me this long to embrace it. - Развлечения
Pre ordered the X100VI as my first Fuji along with the WCL. I really wanted an X100V, but never got one as I wanted IBIS since I’m a hybrid shooter. Just found your videos and now you have me super hyped for creating with it.
Ok what a heckin masterclass👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 you explained my process perfectly when I shoot with the Ricoh GRiii. I LOVE getting up close and filling the frame with it even at the 28mm focal length. Well done my man. Much love from East Tennessee🙏🏼
thank you Garrett! I really appreciate the support and kind comment. also love when the same philosophies line up. Love the Griii!
Your disclaimer at the beginning of the video was on point...
Hahaha 😝
I really dig 28mm for video, I’m still coming around to it for photo. None the less, love the video
I really love the style of this video. Super well done!
thank you Jason, I really appreciate that. Been really honing in on my style lately and I think I've found it with this video. thank you for the support!
Bought it before the video even ended! I’m gonna have to watch you!😅
I slapped the WCL on my x100v and I’ve never looked back. GAME CHANGER
It’s crazy what a difference a few mm make… now, if Fuji could put a native 28mm on there. That’d be sick.
Yep short focal length are the way to go. Baby wraps are also the way to go too! I love them both so practical. My Nikon 28mm is awesome lens, On my X-H1, I use the 16mm 1.4 all the time. With my little one, I'm going a little light with the TTArtisan 25mm f/2 MF or the TTArtisan 27mm AF.
X-h1 is the best camera fujifilm made. Love that 16mm 1.4 as well, I wish they would make more lenses with that clutch focus.
Haha, subbed. This is my new favorite channel.
what a great video. you're right. (I need this). shout out to BH Taco + Camera Girl.. beautiful photos, Chris. LOVE the rich black + whites - just stunning! These will be timeless treasures most certainly. (Btw I have b/w's my photography-father took wayyy back when I was a child that are absolute treasures now. The best).
I can't believe it took Frankly this long to embrace the 28mm.
Frank Lee.
"I watched his GoPro video ... and he put the Leica on it" Boy, the way I just watched that Van video the other day myself and my ears perked up. 🙏 I just found your channel because I'm lookin' around at ZV-1 and Fuji X100 content - you're awesome! Cheers from Seattle(ish).
Haha awesome, I love Van’s videos. Thanks for the kind comment, hope everything is well in Seattle!
So... X-E3 or no?
Perfect vlog right on schedule with my afternoon coffee 🙋🏻♂
I just woke up… pooping. Right on schedule from my morning coffee 😆
I really enjoy the WCL on my X100F. My only issue is that if I need to use the flash, It will cast a shadow, but other than that, it's great.
Yeah that part is definitely a bummer.
@@chrismeetschris yup, and adding a hot shoe flash sort of defeats the purpose of having a small camera.
Quick question: is all your audio from onboard mic or are you using an external mic? I’ll be using my X100VI for a lot of video as well and I’m just curious.
First…
😆😆
This is the first video I see from you and I already liked and subscribed. I love what you said. And it kind of makes me mad, too. I also have a baby boy but it's already a year and a half old. I captured many moments with my 35mm f2, the only lens I own. And while I have so many great pictures, most of them isolate the subject and miss too many context. And as you said, I have to take some steps back to capture the photo. Indoors, that might be impossible. Though it's never too late and I'll sure buy a wider option. That said, it's annoying that Fuji has neglected its 18mm lenses. The f1.4 I assume it's incredible but way too big and expensive for an aficionado like me, and the f2 version is old and noisy and too expensive compared to the "fujicrons". I really wish they updated the f2 soon. But to be honest, I'd love the exact same combo you have here.
Anyways, I love this review. Not technicalities, just perspective and storytelling. And short! As a father I don't have time anymore for 20 minute reviews. Well done
thank you, Jose! You're bang on about the 18mm options from fuji.. I have the 18mm 1.4.. I'm currently selling it because it's a little too big (and definitely not cheap) I'm actually considering grabbing the clunker 18mm F2. but I completely agree with you, they need a refreshed version of the 18mm.
I want to know about your AF/MF settings please!
Hey man, do you still use your GR3x? Have you changed your mind on the 28mm vs 40mm?
ha I've been trying to figure this out myself. I still have my GR3x. And I think my philosophy on it hasn't changed in relation to having the "28mm" on my phone. But im still holding onto my ricoh as I love the images it produces and when I eventually get bored of my x100v I'll swap it out for the ricoh and the cycle will continue :). that said, I prefer 40 to 35 thats for sure. Right now I'm loving the 28mm but more so because I need to do video at the same time, and I find that 28mm allows me to do both without compromise. I like the idea of still having the ricoh being its own thing at 40mm. sorry for the stream-of-conciousness reply... I'm still trying to work this out! haha
@@chrismeetschrishaha, it’s a dilemma 🤣
One thing I like about the x100v (if I had one) is the packability in a sling or something. Do you think that is lost with the wide converter added?
@@YourFriendJeff somewhat yes - but overall it’s still a nice kit. Kind of like a Leica M body with a lens. I’ll take the trade off though!
@@chrismeetschris do you throw it in a bag or just sling it over with a strap? Any image quality degradation with the wide conversion?
How would you feel about a GRIII (28mm version) and your iPhone mini for video?
Why use Leica sticker? It has its own identity imo.
I actually wish Fuji come up with a Reporter’s Edition kinda special edition styling for X100 series or something with no branding.
haha for sure it does. It's a bit of an inside joke if you know me. I used to have a Leica m6, actually multiple of them lol, and now they're way too expensive to afford one, recently I was looking to get another one, but actually found I was super super satisfied with my x100v... so I always joke that my x100v is my m6.
@@chrismeetschris Hahahahaha.
X100V might actually turn out to be a cult classic like M6 down the line. You never know.
Yours will for sure hold a special place in your life simply because of the moments you are capturing with it right now...
@@hiteshwarmehla2267 the x100V basically is a cult classic already. This camera simultaneously doesn't cost $2000 USD and DOES cost $2000 USD lol Im glad I picked it up before TikTok drove it to madness. It''s a great camera but even the original $1399 was a bit steep.
@@chrismeetschris You have a video about why you like the likea ?
@@jan-martinulvag1953 no, haha. It was long before my RUclips channel. ... but, simply put, a Leica film camera is like-a nice watch.. its a timeless piece (no pun intended) that has so much photographic history attached to it.
