    Just a heads up, I made a mistake in this video at 1:25 where I incorrectly give the reciprocal direction. It should be 225 degrees.... not 255 degrees.

  • @pilotactor777
    @pilotactor777 7 лет назад +93

    Rule for reciprocsls-add 2 to the first number, subtract 2 from the second, or subtract 2 and add 2 (otherwise numbers can be overly large like 500). so recip of 351- subtract 2 and add 2= 171

      Thanks for the very kind words, I'm surprised how well this video has done with Instrument and CPL/ATPL students. It's a surprisingly difficult subject to fully grasp but I've luckily just about managed to learn it in theory!

  • @narendra_lm

    This has got to be one of the hardest subjects in flight school. My flight instructor failed me 4 times on this subject. It's hard enough when you're in a simulator. It's even worse when you're up in a training area.

      first of all, i m not surprised. i think you have to practice different entries and degrees to decide which type entry otherwise its all going to remain trial and error guesswork at worst. its got to be practiced by drawing it out on paper and deciding what to do. also, get a different flightinstructor who will practice holds.

    When entering parallel, you do not fly back to the fix at a 30 degree angle. When you start your turn back to the fix, you continue that standard rate turn until you intercept the inbound course and then track inbound until you pass the fix.

    my method is simple : i just look at the chart figure out my position and then decide which one is the. best. The good way of learning this is to draw it on a sheet of paper and then practice practice practice. Good and edacucational video Thumbs UP and sub :)

    Horray! This is a good 👌 video to watch... I think that a pilot's best friend is an imaginary pet dog whom I call "Low Workload", and that dog has four feet and a tail, nothing more, nothing less... An airborne aircraft may perform patterns, but those patterns are intended to keep the workload manegeable, keeping the maneuver simple, by following just the needed steps to accomplish the goal; doable, by limiting the maneuvers to the simple prestablished steps. "Doability" is what is sought after, not PERFECTION. From 3:30 to 3:55 on the video "Low Workload" stepped out, and "Overload" stepped in...

  • @MrJetra

    The reciprocal equals the outbound leg. The charts that I've seen all include this course. Hence, you don't need math. In your case, the chart directly shows 064°.
    Focussing on the right hand pattern, if this course is left to your actual course, you will use P or D. If it is to the right, you will use O or D.
    The decision line is following the 110° (left) and 70° (right) compass markers.
    Your method, slightly rewritten, could be:
    1. Set the course towards the FIX.
    2. Determine the outbound course from the chart.
    3. If this course is within 110° to the left, use P. Otherwise use D. If it is within 70° to the right, use O. Otherwise use D.
    The left hand pattern swaps left and right.
    I hope that this might clarify your explanation a little bit.
    Btw. I have learned a lot from your tutorials. Thanks.
    Another small detail: I looked at the London Heathrow approach chart. It contains two mirrored patterns, i.e. right hand and left hand patterns using the same FIX. One at HONILEY and the other at WESTCOTT. You could try to exercise a shift from right hand to left hand pattern. I think it could be very educational.

      Well, you did help me, definitely won't mind doing that for ya! Here ya go :
      "Had trouble grasping the concept of holding pattern entries whilst studying EASA ATPL Air Law, and to make things worse, my ground school instructor was not really that great at explaining it either, so I ended up having to research it and I stumbled upon Doofer911's tutorial video on that very same subject. Didn't even have to watch the whole thing, the instructions coupled with the graphics made me grasp the concept fairly quickly. 3 days later I sat down for my ATPL exam and lo and behold, there were 2 holding pattern entry questions! Thanks Doofer!

    for direct entry-you dont need to intercept the inbound course first.If you coming in at right angles to the inbound, lets say anything from 70 to 110 dgrees-fly over beacon for 17 seconds, then start turn for 20 seconds, then outbound for a remainder 30 seconds, and the ``1 minute outbound leg `` will have been completed.Then turn inbound to theinbound course to the fix.

  • @Auntcankles

    just to let you know, your 20 degree line should be added to your abeam radial. Or another way, subtact 70 degrees from the radial coming from the fix. In other words, your angle ( pinky to thumb) needs 40 degrees added to it for the POD to work correctly for a legal standard right hand holding pattern

    Yes very help full understanding entries in holding pattern. But in the simulator it will be (maybe) difficult to use the POD method... But it's still possible to imagine the right hand over the DHG to have a good idea on what is the best entry to use. (if it's a right holding pattern obviously). I never knew this memo technique so it is so simple to apply I really well understood how to do. Very good job my Friend. And as said earlier a good extra video in the cockpit airplane on a full entry method and hold would be nice with your very clear commentaries (if you have the time and patience the Offset and Parallel entries examples witch are the more complicated would be nice). Keep your good work you are the best on the fly tutorials videos. Your commentaries are clear and well documented and under laying text are very help full to understand. Best wishes ;-)

      Thanks for the kind words :) Yeah I think if you can remember that the POD Diagram has that 20 degree tilt to it, then you should be able to figure out the sectors accurately. As you saw, the vertical line simply matches your heading when you're flying to the Fix. I#ll definitely be preparing a demonstration video for this weekend!

    I’m having a hard time understanding why you’re suggesting a parallel entry. If you’re flying heading 150 towards the fix, you’d be approaching from bottom right, which may call for a direct entry. Or am I looking at it incorrectly? You're legally allowed to enter a hold any way you'd like. Examiners will fail you for doing it any different than what the AIM suggest but it is legal. The only thing ATC cares about is that you're staying on the protected side.

    • @Zumaray
      @Zumaray 6 месяцев назад

      That is not correct at all. Holding patterns are designed to ensure you are protected from obstructions and surrounding airspace. You legally and for your safety, must conduct the sector entry correctly. All good if you don't have terrain or obstructions, but very bad if there are. If you want a reference for this, look at PANS-OPS DOC 8168 Volume 1

  • @stuartroy9097
    @stuartroy9097 7 лет назад +2

    I may not be understanding something. but should you not inverse the pod pattern on the heading display so it is like you were using your left had? Because you heading in relation to the holding course is inverse of the holding course's relation to your heading. Imagine if you were flying in on the border between direct and teardrop, and see how you would calculate.

    • @stuartroy9097
      @stuartroy9097 7 лет назад

    • @Doofer911

    • @Doofer911
      @Doofer911  7 лет назад

      A Fix can be an intersection between two VORs so it'll be a bit more difficult to work out but it is possible. Alternatively, you also get GPS fixes so if you have a GPS on board, you can use that to calculate the holding pattern. As for DME, my understanding is that the legs of a Hold can be defined by distance rather than time, that's my understanding of DME being involved in Holding.

    • @Doofer911
      @Doofer911  6 лет назад

      I'm not 100% sure if you do need to correct for wind conditions or not in a holding pattern. You certainly wouldn't change the leg length... each leg is normally 1 minute unless stated otherwise for special reasons.

    • @greenlightzone
      @greenlightzone 6 лет назад

      Doofer911 Im afraid you change the leg lenght too, according to if you have head/tail/ wind. I got a formula from captain Joe from his last video about holding patterns. But for me adding the wind correction is an extra challenge and I really like it personally. Oh wait, maybe I'm using a B737, I guess its more affected by strong winds.

    • @Doofer911
      @Doofer911  6 лет назад

      Ah fair enough, I didn't realise that. I assumed that ATC would clear any aircraft in and they would all be affected by the wind the same way but thinking about it now, that doesn't make sense, especially when aircraft are in a holding stack for a busy airport, such as Heathrow.

    I’m pretty sure the sector diagram is the wrong way round you have used the left turn pattern

    With the teardrop how do you know when you’re flying at a 30* angle

    • @pilotjm817
      @pilotjm817 4 года назад

      Eg. Hold west of ABC VOR, the fix for ABC VOR is on the 090/270 radial...standard right turns...I'm coming from the NE direction....Once I reach my fix, I will fly 270-30 degrees= 240 heading, for 1 minute, then make a right turn to intercept my inbound leg of 090. This an example with calm winds/no winds!
      LARS, L+30 or R-30,...if your fix is on the 090/270 radial, then you would add 30 degrees and fly that heading for 1minute before turning to intercept your inbound leg, if you are doing NON-STANDARD left turn. For STANDARD right turns, you would substract 30 degrees from the radial and fly that heading for 1 minute before intercepting. Hope it helps.

    What about handling winds and impact on the pattern?

    • @tedm6894
      @tedm6894 4 года назад

      Triple drift for your outbound leg. Single for inbound. Subtract/add a second for every knot of tail or headwind during ur outbound. All very relative stuff tbh.

    at 4:22, you say to fly the hold for one minute. What speed is to be maintained?

    • @Doofer911
      @Doofer911  7 лет назад +1

      It's usually up to the pilot to decide. Some holds have speed limits, and there may be times when ATC asks you to fly at a certain speed.

    • @joshuabarbosa4824
      @joshuabarbosa4824 7 лет назад

      Doofer911 yeah, but different speeds will mean different distances in the hold legs, won't it???

    • @Doofer911
      @Doofer911  7 лет назад

      Yep, not a problem, ATC will organise the aircraft in the hold. For example they may send jet aircraft which can comfortably fly at 250 knots to one holding pattern, then propeller aircraft that can only fly at 170 knots to a different hold for example.
