Chrysler/Dodge Viper GTS-R Racing on Track: V10 Sound, Warm Up, Accelerations!

- Here's a video about one of the most iconic GT race cars ever built: the Viper GTS-R. I tried to put together all the clips and scenes I stored in these recent years, during which, thanks to the introduction of some new historic championships (Endurance Racing Legends and Masters Endurance Legends), these old glories are having a second life. But I honestly tought to have slightly more material... I have to do better next time I see them.
The GTS-R was born because Dodge wished to showcase the potential capabilities of the new car, mostly in the realm of handling. At the same time, Dodge also hoped to increase sales in Europe where importation of the Viper had struggled. Dodge's parent, Chrysler, therefore approved the development of a racing program centering on the Viper GTS which was still in development at the time. Chrysler believed that in order to adapt their car not only for North American but also European circuits, they would require outside assistance. In 1995 the development of the car started in partnership with French company Oreca, which would build and maintain the cars, and British company Reynard Motorsport, which was in charge of building the chassis and other integral parts before they were shipped to Oreca for assembly. The Viper GTS-R was built under the GT1/GTS-1 class rules in order to be raced in both the FIA-GT and the North American IMSA GT championships. Oreca was chosen to run Chrysler's official factory teams in Europe. For North America, Chrysler would recruit the Canaska/Southwind Team as their factory effort.
As soon as its racing career started in 1996, Chrysler understood that the GT1-class wasn't suitable for the GTS-R due to the presence of GT monsters such as the Porsche 911 GT1, McLaren F1 and later the upcoming Mercedes CLK, etc. Instead the Viper would make a perfect GT2 contender and as a first step the class victory at Le Mans was a more reasonable project.
Starting from the GT1 basis, Oreca and Mopar Performance spent the winter of 1996/97 re-engineering the car to GT2 specifications and developing a proper racing engine with Caldwell. As a result the Viper won the FIA GT2 championship out pacing the Porsches, the absolute reference in GT for decades, but failed at Le Mans. For 1998 the GTS-R saw considerable development with a lighter chassis, better aero, much improved suspension and a more reliable engine. For the 1998 and 1999 seasons, Oreca Vipers had no real opposition and largely dominated the FIA-GT, Le Mans and ALMS. 2000 would be the last year of Oreca as a factory team, this final season seeing intense battles with the all new and more advanced Corvette C5R built upon new regulations.
In 2001 the regulations changed as the GT world saw the advent of the new GT1 category. The Viper still had considerable potential and was upgraded with improved specifications and developed by the private teams. In an ultimate effort, Oreca developed in 2003 a new GT1 package for the Viper (cars with larger rear wings in this video are, in theory, GT1s).
Although the production cars have mostly been known as Dodge Vipers, the Dodge brand did not sell the Viper in Europe. Because the new cars, named GTS-R, were built in Europe, they were mostly known as Chrysler Viper GTS-R. However cars racing in North America usually ran under the Dodge banner, making them Dodge Viper GTS-Rs. This naming difference therefore depends on location and region. The cars themselves actually carried no badging for either Chrysler or Dodge, with only the Viper GTS-R name appearing on the side of the bonnet.
The Viper is powered by a 8.0-litre V10 engine which was able to produce 620hp at 6,500 rpm and 800 Nm of torque and linked to a 6 speed manual gearbox.

The Team-Oreca paint scheme screams nostalgia
I kinda like more the classic red with white stripes and the big logo of Play Station
Gran turismo 2!!!
Pretty sure a friend of mine still has an old RC car with that exact body shell.
Grand Turismo 2.
The candy red with the viper stripes.. pure porn for any racing fan.
The tricolore is rather common at Le Mans
That low-rev V10 is just.. unmistakably unique
Yep but i expect - better - sound???
Not many racecars come with an 8 liter engine. In this cars class it's overkill, so it hardly needs to rev before it hits max regulation horsepower. And it will last fantastically long as an endurance engine. Same with the Corvette C5R with the 7 liters.
@@RidinDirtyRollinBurnouts Yep.
@@joe125ful The Zakspeed vipers that raced with the VLN/24h nurburgring races had that loud sound. but that viper engine had 2 cil cut off to give it that raw v8 sound.
@@zzr600cc and it sounds better
Fun fact, my grandfather (head engineer of team viper and the one overseeing the Viper GTSR’s development) used to tell me how they’d hand the drivers wads of cash to keep with them just in case they went off track, particularly into one of the gravel traps, because back then you could sometimes “get a little extra help” back on track by paying off the marshals. Reason I always find that funny is because even in the late 90s, drivers/teams were paying off marshals to try and get back on track faster or even stay in the race. Also, the original GTSR was supposed to utilize a dual element rear wing to reduce drag for the top speed sections like the Mulsanne Straight, but the FIA banned it essentially straight away, so the original wing is now currently sitting in my grandfather's house autographed by the entire development team as essentially a mantlepiece lol.
now that thing is one hell of a piece of history.
I hope you understand that this is bullshit and that your grandfather was a liar who loved telling stories. Or you are the liar who likes telling stories....
WOW. I want to see that wing!
@@chahahc 👍👍👍
Your grandpa is Roy Sjoberg?????
Ah yes, Gran Turismo 2 introduced me to this car. I'm still playing it today and never get bored.
GT2 is still the best racing game ever!
@@7plymaple124 Yup. It's a classic.
GT4 too
@@emekaasiegbu3697 And GT3.
Man of culture.
That's why the Dodge Viper still remains one of my personal favorite supercars.
Wow!
Although it is a GT or grand tourer dude..
@@mortenfrosthansen84 It's a GT car with supercar performance.
@@wyvern4588 yeah.. guess you could call it that..
Crazy idea actually. A V10 in a modern hotrod
@@mortenfrosthansen84 It was the late 80's early 90's, The designer probably did a fat line and said "now picture this..." and the rest was history.
That’s one of the few cars I recall growing up seeing where I always thought, “If I had a chance behind the wheel, I’d stuff it into the woods every single time.” To this day, its proportions still gives me that same discomfort. Hats off to anyone with a pair big enough to turn more than a lap in one.
Yeah the chassis layout reminds me of what a Caterham might be if it was fed a steady diet of steroids and cheeseburgers. I'd imagine it'd take some getting accustomed to moving that much hood/bonnet around.
Goood memories come up again !
The iconic Viper, the Ferrari 550 and 575, Corvette C5, Lister Storm etc etc
Saleen S7 😍
Panoz too
I spent many hours on Gran Turismo 2 racing the Team Oreca Viper against the Venturi, GT40, NSX, Saleen Mustang, Supra and of course the Lister Storm that was always in last place 😂
Lmao the Lister was always last place
The Lister is such a badass car too i wish it had better performance.
@@DoctorTauri yep. Guess what, it was Asuna Yuuki drove that Lister Storm V12 Race Car man. Lol.
@@MassiveBig yep. It performed best in Super GT300 Championship and Grand Touring Car Trophy Race 3 tho.
Weirdly the Storm was actually a highly successful GT car! But the daddy on that game was the Speed 12. Nothing bar a well driven Escudo Pikes Peak could catch me with my dialled in 12 🤌🏼
Growing up watching this as the dream! Now owning a Gen 5 ACR with a 9L motor. The experience is priceless. This car was made to race from the start and that's why it made history back then! This makes me happy to watch in 2021!
congrats on your purchase
I remember this Viper Team Oreca from the Test Drive Le Mans for PS1, so nostalgic!
I have the ps2 version and it is such a good game! Great soundtrack and vehicle selection. Gem of a game.
@@MassiveBig I've never played the PS2 version, must be even better than the psone! I just think Test Drive LeMans is kinda underrated
Bozzy - are you trying to kill us with nostalgia overload !? 🤣
Honoka Kousaka approved this.
Love those Vipers, especially the first and second generation in blue with white stripes. Huge V10 engine with lots of torque.
I love how the driver is sitting on the rear axle.
if you lov that, try out a Caterham. An experience everybody should do.
This is still one of my favorite cars of all time. This livery as well as the red/white look so amazing.
Ahhh... the GTR2 nostalgia intensifies. It hit me hard especially when I saw the blue Force One Festina livery at 6:45 which I always drove in the game.
The second gen Viper is still a beatiful supercar and the most favorite of mine even today.
I'm amazed at all the ways they try to cool the car.
Btw, the redhead leaning in, is an awesome photo.
One of the best looking racecars ever with that unmistakable silhouette, poetry in motion!
Well design is more or less ok.
Labre-competition Vipers… sooo much nostalgic livery for me. I saw that car with that livery in GTR2 when I was a kid, thinking when I grow up, I wanna buy and drive that masterpiece. Reality is too harsh…
Labre won several races w/ the Viper !
@@jclafi I feel like… I'm so old…
Everything was beautiful back than compared to these modern era of racing.
Pure powerful cars blazing throughout circuits. I miss good old FIA GT1 class.
@@ViperGTS_R I have GTR2 too. Such good simulator. The cars of that era where the best GT1 ever made !
@@jclafi Yeah, they're true production based race cars compeared to older gen GT1 class cars.
And GTR2 is one of favorite simulators that I've played. Think I played until assetto corsa released.
That sounds incredible 😳
Kinda i mean its not bad but not insane too.
Corvetter C5.R V8 sounds much more better for example.

@@paccin339 😅😂 just sayin
God I love Vipers. Miss them!
Just those exhaust manifolds alone may just be the most exquisite afterthought since the entire R&D of the Ford Bronco
I remember being impressed with the in-game physics of Gran Turismo 2 back in the day. You could either buy (or was it win?) the Oreca Viper, or you could build up a street Viper. But if I tried them back-to-back I would notice the extra weight of the modified Viper under braking and in the turns, and I also noticed the additional downforce of the Oreca one. And then there was the obvious difference in lap time! It's impressive when I think about this now considering that this is just a Playstation 1 game. It also turned me away from other games e.g. Need For Speed because they just don't try to have the same accuracy in physics and suddenly they didn't feel like fun to me anymore. :)
i remember you could buy the oreca viper out of the showroom for £250k. awesome game
One of the most beautiful cars ever!
Those warm ups were absolutely brilliant thank you
One of my all time favorites, blessed to have grown up around Vipers. Thanks for sharing.
This car.. Never,ever get old.
that paint livery is just exquisite :D
Your visuals and audio are just as poised and spot on as this Beauty & Beast 👌
Thanks for this. Still remember going to the ALMS series and watching Team Oreca race the C5R's. Great memories and fantastic machine.
Thank you for this video, it's one of my favorite GT race cars, especially the Team Oreca!!!
This is EXACTLY what I've been waiting for

Thank you for taking the time to put this together. As an American I love the fact that these cars raced and were successful. However, I never got used to the sound of the Viper. I prefer your Mercedes C11 vids for the sound. What a monster! But, the Viper is still an amazing machine.
It was great to see these, as I hadn’t seen one for a while. I Actually had the good fortune of driving a test vehicle of the GTS Road car, that happened to have GTS-R cams in it, for a Thanksgiving weekend, back in the 90s. It handled much better than I expected, at least on smooth surfaces 😉!
Thank you so much for this video. Huge Viper fan.
A pleasure! Thanks for watching
Thanks for this, Luv the vipers ✌👍
You're welcome! Thanks for watching
Gran turismo memory’s right there
I love that smooth sound and the shape of them
Wow the sound is really awesome!
Great video 👍👍
Thanks!
Bellissimo video, grazie per la condivisione, mi saranno molto utili.

Those times in our life that most of us today didn't know what truly happiness is... 😌
Ahhh brings back fond memories of my first time at the 24 Hr of Le Mans in 98
Absolutely love this video, no talking, just the sound and those sexy cars eating up the track. My ultimate dream is to run one of those on a track.
I've been lucky enough to see all these in person!
Thank you. IDK What to say. This car is freaking incredible!!!!!!!!
You're welcome! Thanks for watching
That Viper was the car the FIA based themselves on in order to create the 2000s GT1 category, only major change was adding a bigger rear wing
It's crazy to see that a vast majority of GT2 spec Vipers were upgraded to fit in GT1
Well they were originally for the BPR GT1 series, but the McLaren F1 was so ahead/ advanced of every car compared that they dumped all the other cars in gt2 including the vipers. Porsche and Mercedes would develop the clk and GT1 Porsche in response for the McLaren. That's why Porsche stoped development for the 993 gt2 evo to focus on the GT1. At first the vipers really weren't competitive But oreca kept on development each year.
One of my favorite racecars
amazing video i like
I once saw an oreca painted viper roll in the streets of my small town. I was very surprised to see that and the thing that surprised the most is that the girl I was hanging out with really liked the car.
Real sounds and real cars!!💪💪💪

Sound of raw power 🔥🔥🔥
What an Icon
Cam-in-block, pushrods, etc... what an epic dinosaur of a racecar. The street going versions sounded more like a Grumman milk truck...
Legendary piece of machinery
I bought an RC car with this body (HPI Nitro RS4 RTR) in 1999 because of this car. Such an iconic machine.
Bel video!
Sick spec 😫
I remember back in the late 90’s watching team ORECA crush everyone at LeMans back when Speedvision covered the races. So much nostalgia in this video!
Awesome. Really amazing to see back in action the cars from 2000s FIA GT Championships. I still love these cars better than modern Lamborghinis, Ferraris, Dodges ecc ecc.... the Viper is my favourite car in absolute. Luckily We still can play them on GTR 2 with mods.
V10 😍😍
Legendary classic Vipers 😍😘
One of the most quiet racecars in racing history. Always loved the Viper, always will. But, the thundering roar of the C5R was something else.
A guy that lives around me has a GTS with Team Oreca wrap scheme, it's looks soo good.
my whole body froze for a split second when the first engine started up. never happened to me before. Goodness gracious
I kinda wish Dodge kept the viper in production. Would’ve been so cool to see it race again
My childhood dream car ❤️ Viper and Koenigsegg and im all happy!
I've seen the Team-Oreca car up close, it was in the basement of the Walter P. Chrysler Museum, in Auburn Hills.
Love this machine 😍
If ever Iwas given the change to choose a race car to drive, in 2021 I would still choose the retro 90's GT cars to bang around a track in.
The good old Team Oreca paint scheme is so iconic. Makes me miss Gran Turismo 2. One added note: IT IS ALSO HONOKA KOUSAKA'S FAVOURITE CAR!
Now thats a nice v10 sound
Oreca did such a good job with this car. Timeless superfast beauty
That raw v10 sounds so subtle compared to other car at the track
Yeah sounds nearly weak:)
0:01 I thought this was Gran Turismo 7 footage
Isso que é carro de verdade, um verdadeiro monstro
one of my all time favs! Daytona livery
I'd love to see the black with yellow stripes viper from chaimberlain engineering team.
Incredible that this GT1/GTS beast used a coil pack in it's day 😮
Old School Gran Turismo vibes!
Mythique dans la saga Gran Turismo ! 😍
That fucking Oreca livery from 1999... just gorgeous. Not a huge Viper guy (more of a Vette guy), but I can say that the Viper is one of my favorite American cars.
no idea they had the same underhood setup as the Gen V vipers in regards to the wheel wells and x-bar. Also didn't know it had a carbon fiber intake runners/covers (which helps lower IATs). The red/white/blue Team Oreca Viper is sooo clean, only thing missing was a red/white Team Oreca viper.
I edited my video from old VHS casettes I had... It s great to see good quality videos of these!
Now I know where they took the sounds of the Podracer in Star Wars Episode 1 :)
The huge cross Monte Carlo bar, tells me that without it, the SRT10 flexes like Lex Luger on Monday Nitro when given promo time...😎
my lovely Viper from GT2, angry sound!. ps. 04:02 that V12 Ferrari tho
🐐
Pure Monsters...
I’d have this car exactly the way it is on street lol . Perfect spec
Damn... Flashbacks of the arcade game Scud Race / Sega Super GT...

Gran turismo 3 showed me this car... best game ever on ps2
It just looks better and better with age. No matter how much time passes.
