If one thinks of Gwyn as the 'first man, of the earth, earthy,' the being representative of the old order that requires continual renewal, put to death by the cross and replaced with a new order that stems from the 'furtive pygmy, so easily forgotten' (the stone that the builders rejected became the chief cornerstone), who even shattered his own soul into infinite fragments so it could be everywhere and a part of humanity, so it could _be_ humanity, (if a seed doesn't fall into the ground and dies, it abides alone, but if it falls into the ground and dies, it brings forth much fruit), it can be easy to see what Gwyn does as a parallel to the preservation and clinging to of the old law, and a rejection of the offering of life. You even kill his ally, the great dragon who is, essentially the source of sorcery, you slay death itself, the primal witch of chaos which created a mockery of life. . . some of the imagery has definitely been changed, but a lot of the same ideas are there.

Especially that we changed the name of the sun over history from Saturn to Sol. Our history is obscured by our present desires for innovation. The monks at Senpou were attempting to achieve immortality through sacrifice, defying the Buddhas teachings by forgoing the pursuit if spiritual immortality granted through Nirvana. From Soft's games are interesting, because they've always flirted with a lot of Buddhist concepts, but Sekiro makes it so much more overt. Everything rots. All existence is suffering, and immortal existence is unending suffering. Even paradise will rot, turn to hell, drive all its inhabitants insane with its endless meaninglessness. NOTHING is meant to last forever, not even the gods and the spirits themselves. The only thing that is truly unending is the cycle of life and death, and you can try to stop that machine for a little while, but it will inevitably mangle you in its gears all the same.

It's honestly appropriate, consider one tenant of meditation in Buddhism is peering into death and impermanence (it's not unusual for monks to observe these things as a form of meditation). It almost feels like that was the inspiration for this whole area. So a corrupted buddhism could be represented by beings stuck in an undead immortality.

For real I think there was some damning commentary on some branches of Buddhism IRL going on with this game.
The monks in the game are depicted as evil since they are actively seeking immortality rather than acceptance of death, and have allies themselves with a regime that brutalized people to do so...
Some Buddhist sects have absolutely gone all-in with spirit worship and obsession over an afterlife, and have allied with brutal regimes IRL.
The attempt on the dalia lamas life was conducted by one such sect, who was more than willing to ally with a government that has actively persecuted other Buddhists to so.
Buddhist quite rightly has a reputation for being a peaceful and loving religion, but sadly they are not immune to the fanaticism that haunts all religions.

Chinese Monks rarely involve themselves in battle and favoured the quarterstaff, due to the non lethality.
The biggest battle the Shaolin and Chinese Monks engaged in was when the Ming hired them to counter Japanese Wako Pirate Raids in Chinese Coastal City.
After one major casualty battle, the Chinese Monks decided to return to a life of tranquility and divorced themselves from conflict.

Never played Sekiro, but I’ve always been fascinated with all the horror inspired by Christian religious trauma. This just made me realise religious trauma originating from other faiths is a thing and there’s dope horror inspired by it too 🤔
Edit: just for clarification because I'm already seeing people fighting in the comments, I don't mean religious trauma from religious persecution. You don't need to be oppressed by other religions to feel it, just living your life being told there are deities watching you is enough to conjure up some fucked up mental images and I think that makes for some really cool horror concepts that's it
alright now pls stop starting shit here and go find who asked

It’s funny you say that when depicting an evil variant of Hinduism was literally the whole premise of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, the variant in question being based on a real-life sect known as thuggees (where we get the word “thug” from) which was infamous for sacrificing people to the goddess Kali, albeit not usually in as brutal a manner as depicted in the film. Granted, a lot of Hindus have criticized that movie, but even then I think it was more because the narrative implied that Kali is considered evil in regular Hinduism whereas the actual religion considers her to be benevolent even in her destructive role.
