This was a weird project in the sense that it pushed me further than any other model in a long time. I tried out a lot of new things on this model mainly the marbling effects and painting on the ID marking and Hinomaru's. I actually didn't have anything to record for the decal process aside from the numbers on the tail.
I know that I've ranted and raved about how much I like the Airfix Zero, but this is an utterly amazing kit to assemble. The engineering and finesse of the parts is simply incredible. I know that this kit is a bit on the expensive side for a small 1:72nd fighter but once you build it you won't regret it.
I'd also like to thank Greg at stevethefishdotnet, for providing me with the maskings for the windows. I know that many of you long time viewers have seen me mask most of my clear parts, but the frames were so thin I couldn't do it. I'd also like to thank those who commented encouraging me to build this kit. I think that with everything going on in my life I needed a challenge like this one.
A few things I'd like to mention:
- I think that this Zero was built by Mitsubishi and not Nakajima, so I was repainting the interior colors as I realized afterwards that I had used the wrong paint. Also to lead me to believe this was a Mitsubishi Zero was the removal and cover of the tail hook which was something common with Mitsubishi as well as the longer green-grey line on the fuselage and not the curve.
-As far as the weathering is concerned i.e the silver chipping. I studied several books carefully and noticed that the chipping was more minimal. It's also difficult to properly weather a Zero in a small scale. However I did find a few interesting pictures where the ID bands on the fuselage were chipped and the under laying paint (Green & Grey) was visible. I thought that this would be a unique feature to add to my aircraft.
Like I said this project really pushed me to try to do and be better, it was a very fun experience and I've spent the past few days grinning at it in my display case. And please don't ask me how I got that antenna wire on... I have no idea. Thanks for watching and I hope that you enjoy this kit as much as I have.

So did you find that yellow GX paint covered the darker paint underneath with minimal interference?
I really hated the GX color, I had a base layer of white on there and it came out really green. I was shocked that I went and tested this on an all-white backdrop and it still has a slight green tint to it. So I decided to just go back and slowly add more layers, keeping in mind they were very thin. And I sort of got the color I wanted. Not sure what I did wrong with this GX paint, I couldn't find any instructions for it.
Amazing. Brilliantly thought out and executed. Inspires me to try more difficult painting.
I think all the hard work you've put in this model payed off spectacularly, hands down the best zero I've seen in 1/72. Really looks like a real plane. Excellent job mate!

Thank you very much. I hadn't realized how long it has been since I did a Zero. I had a lot of chaos with my modeling last year and this project really got me on track for 2020.

WHAT A WORK OF ART. The details to the cockpit (which, on the other side, I wish I had the chance to behold in a little bit more of detail, before putting it on place), the weathering all over the aircraft. Just perfect.

Interesting trick with the foam rubber in the cowling and then use it to clip onto. I would have never thought of that myself.

So that GX-4 is it? I stopped and read the comments first, but didn't realize it was a yellow. Is it a new brand of Gunze? Very clean and pure looking Lemon yellow. Probably about 15 coats, huh?
Looks like Tamiya has the title again. Raised the bar quite a bit.

Thanks Dave, I haven't gone anywhere really, RUclips just doesn't like promoting my videos anymore. The foam in the cowling worked out really quite well I have to say, something I'm going to try and remember for future builds.
I'm not sure on the GX paints. Yeah it took a lot of layers to get that color, and it just kept coming out as green. I'm wondering if I need a GX White as an base layer?
Not that I know bunches about them, but yeah, it had been suggested to undercoat both yellow and red, and most definitely under any florescent with white.

That must have been rewarding! Bet it looks great with your others on the shelf. Was wondering about that interior colour. That was Mitsubishi int. Green? My first zero I removed the arrester hook as the first 12 in China where not equipped. You have done a great job, should be proud!
Yes, the first color I used accidentally was Nakajima green a really pale color, after I realized my mistake I went out and repainted it all with the Mitsubishi color. Thank you very much Lance :) I've actually sold one of my Zero's so I've now got a good place for this one on the shelf.

A nice build mate, I happen to be building a model of the same type of plane as the one in this video, but mine's from academy😁 anyway could you tell me the size of the wires you used to replicate cables on the plane's engine behind the propeller?

Currently i'm building this kit, it's absolutely gorgeous! Yours came out fine. Are the silver wheel wells correct? The instructions says blue-green metallic (Aotake).

Nice seeing the old matchbox paint tin. Can it still be used? I still have a few bottles of the old airfix paints glass bottles. Nice to see you still have a zero fixation. Lol.
Ron, I don't think that fixation will go away anytime soon haha :D Test them out, I've heard of people who have had enamel paints that are over 25 years old and still good as day one. I don't have much use for enamels anymore aside from weathering, but yes these old Matchbox paints are good to go.
@@rebelsatcloudnine there are so many different brands of paint on the market. I am finding it over powering. I am having trouble with A.K. interactive. I painted a mustang using their aluminium, a week ago, and it is still wet.
Hmm, that is interesting. I can think of 2 things that might be going on. 1- The paint needs to be mixed a lot, which is common with many metallic colors. 2- Possibly there was too much paint applied and it's taking a long time to dry. These are just my guesses.
@@rebelsatcloudnine I did use brushing, so it is possible I used too much or a combination of both. It took 8 days to dry. It's okay now though.

I don't remember the exact size, it's just one from year back, but I think it's 1mm.

An interesting project for paint skills would be one of the late-war Japanese fighters, when apparently they couldn't make good quality paint and the green just washed off in the rain, leaving a mottled green/aluminum finish.
Do you have a source for that, I'd like to read more into it.

Apparently some of the raw materials for quality paint were not available, plus in the interest of speed the manufacturers skipped priming the aluminum.
Yes they stopped priming in 1943, but I'm looking more for your source on the paint simply washing off from the rain?
@@rebelsatcloudnine Oh sorry, I just made up the washing off in the rain part. But Pacific island sun and rain and salt water were hard on all paints, including Allied; they all faded. But from the pictures it's apparent that late-war Japanese paints suffered badly, and for whatever exact reason came off in large areas, exposing the aluminum underneath.
I do have a bot of a theory on that one, as some pictures I've seen of the Zero show really stressed skin, I'm wondering if the ESD metal they used reacted to the warm sun stressing the metal, and because the paint wasn't applied with a primer that once it cooled back to its original shape that the paint kind of popped off. That an a combination of the seawater really weakened the paint. Again just a theory I've had for a few years now.
Very nice, Jared. I watched with great interest from beginning to end. The Zero in 1/72 is one of my favs. I like the Airfix kit, too. I have yet to build the Tamiya, although I have a couple in my collection. I'm saving them, I guess. 🙂
A couple of questions: I noticed you used Mr. Cement SP. I was checking into that line of glues just yesterday. It's still unclear what special features it has. Are they slower or faster setting than Mr. Cement S? SPB is black, which is kind of handy, when you want to see where your glue is going, I guess. As well: what did you use to create the chips? Pencil? Paint applied with brush?

Build one up sometime soon, as it's the nicest little model you can ever build. Watching the parts fall together is kind of magical. -So the Mr Hobby SP (Special Power) is designed to dry quicker, but it's also a much hotter glue. So on the seamlines where I wanted a really strong bond I used the SP glue. It's also aggressive with the Airfix styrene, it practically welds the pieces together, quite incredible. So yes the SP is quicker than the S, and the SP is kind of my go to glue now. And you are correct the SP Black is just dyed black for visibility, not something I find necessary for my builds but Greg likes it more than the SP, so modelers choice on that one. - For the chips, I used a tiny brush, and lightly painted them on. I didn't record any of it as I was focusing really hard and I was working very close to the model.
I've got that J2M3 you sent me a while back out. I just need to buy a book on it for reference and then I'm going to start that one. It's going to be a cool project.

I have built a couple in 1/48 for sure and was amazed at the size of the Cockpit! You could bring a lunch for sure, in a Raiden.
Speaking of Raidens, I bought (or I thought I did) a 1/72 Hasegawa Raiden from Plaza Japan at a great price a while ago. When it arrived, the box was bigger than I expected. Inside was a 1/48 scale Raiden! Either they screwed up or they ran out of 1/72 and substituted a 1/48 scale kit.
As for the glue, I have Tamiya quick-setting glue here. That might be on par with the SP. I'm tempted to pick up a bottle of SP, all the same, but I've got so many bottles of glue here (enough for a lifetime!) I'm reluctant to buy another!

I know what you mean I'm tempted to try out all sorts of glues as well. I've kind of replaced Mr Hobby SP from Tamiya, I just like it a lot more, and that includes the standard glue as well. They dry a little slower on the plastic but they have a better bond, and I find that saves me work in the long run.

painting landing gear bays not in metallic blue seems to be controversial. why would you do that, especialy when you had that colour in stock
Because this Zero was built by Mitsubishi and not Nakajima. Nakajima Zero's had the metallic blue color.

@@OgrabliatorKorovanov I appreciate that, but I doubt it :) I study the Zero quite a bit, it's a favourite subject of mine. And as I investigated the location this was stationed and the squadron that was using it, not to mention the exterior paint scheme led me to believe that this Zero was Mitsubishi built. Plus it's an interesting color scheme for my collection.
