  • Six months in and 15 major subjects later. What's the point of the SIPNet and training for SHTF radio. My big question to you is, How can you contribute to the net and more importantly your radio proficiency?

Bob, you hit the nail on the head regarding my question. I thought it was redundant to have people calling in via radio when you are live streaming at the same time. I get it now. It’s about training as well as being a net and not a broadcaster. Thanks for answering my question.

Thanks Bob. You are exactly right. When SHTF it's too late to learn how to work your radio or if it even works. Do you follow APRS? I will be traveling next month and like to see if can track my progress. KI7YTJ

I do. Sometimes. There's only one Igate in my area so coverage is spotty.

Just remember the mixed blessing of APRS. It is recorded "forever" with open access. A discontented neighbor or local burglars can see you are out if town. Yes, it has been used to send emergency calls as well, and can even send email texts. But you are sending a beacon, with no way to know who will see it.

My family is originally from Idaho, in fact Twin Falls. It would be great for us to listen to your net when it's live. Do a live stream here so we can get an idea. Here, we have a weekly member check-in net, followed by the next day, ARES net, we break off to simplex frequencies and different modes, then on Tuesday is a Tech Net, where everyone listening can ask questions that are ham radio related.

The problem with nets is that you get the ONE guy who wants to discuss his set up at length and just wont shut up. No one cares what antenna wire you are using nor the good deal you got on it in 1972, nor the fact you have been operating since you were 9yo with your extra ticket.
I partake in a couple of nets, and am not a net control, but I appreciate those who do. I would be available if you wish me to participate in your net. Am a prepper and a former Army Ranger and a current career Fire Captain/HAZMAT guy.
So... I hurt my knee when I was standing up my first antenna that I got from the Radio Shack on Main and Elm st. Back when old man Johnson owned it. Was a 87' tower that I got for a song! Old man Johnson died in '82 and the shop went to garbage when his son took over...

What about designating someone to relay the pertinent comments from the chat to the radio since you have your hands full handling the radio and running the outline? Maybe run a call in or find a way to blend discord chat into the live stream? Keep the discord muted until someone raises their hand? I don't know how that would go out over the radio and may take away from the radio net practice but just tossing out options.... the proverbial throw it against the wall and see what sticks.

    Medical strategies.
When the system collapses there will be a need for medical knowledge. First aid kits and books. Medical manuals.
Knowledge of wild medicinal plants in your area.

How about adding winlink to the check in's the areas / skywarn net's as part of it or as a side thing.

    • @K6UDA

Explain a little more. Winlink's an email program and skywarn is a weather spotter group.

If the SHTF for real What would you really do? There needs to be something better than the usual Field day or just these nets! A mock drill within the state or several states participating in this mock drill where people are ready to bug out set up command sites and on the ready. see how fast one can get out on a moments notice and set up a State or several State wide comm links to pass REAL TIME TRAFFIC! have all hams Plus include REACT CB radio operators GMRS included to coordinate emergency traffic { MOCK TRAFFIC for training purposes only at this time} make Training situation one for example Natural Disasters like TORNADOS , Earthquakes, FLOOD / Search and rescue coordination and operations, handing traffic to get communication out to EOCs and displaced family members to check in with their loved ones in places where the Comm Networks are totally down etc! Civil Unrest Scenarios , Operations in stealth mode etc, get my point. this all needs to be coordinated of course with say with the cooperation with a Radio or TV network willing to participate or State agency. Participants will need to clear it with their employers to inform them that the notice can go out at anytime and they will need to react forthwith. and its to their advantage for their goodwill can community and State to participate in these exercises. They can even get involved with it if they so desire by supporting these efforts. Getting as many Ham radio Clubs and even other organizations involved would be a plus.Would be nice to get the Red Cross and even the National Guard involved if possible. Just a thought. I am sure their are people out there with the right connections and influence that could help pull this off. Maybe someone knows a Senator or Congressman , Governor etc? What do you think? Will Provide a boost to Amateur Radio as a Valued and much needed resource and bring more attention and hopefully more people getting their tickets!

I love this idea. The chance of it happening at least to the scale you suggest are slim to none. The government wants to keep the population fat, dumb and compliant. Getting Hams to play nice with CBers and GMRS folks would be a shit show. Getting broadcast TV or radio to play will never happen unless someone actually gets hurt. Don't get me wrong, it would be an amazing training opportunity but every NGO and gov agency would try and run it for their agenda. Sorry to piss in your bowl of cornflakes but I spent way to long in government to think otherwise.
