    For adults in this 25-45 age range, with our busy lives and raising kids, "GETTING OUT" seems to be the key to me. Portable operations have been fantastic for getting me out of the house on my own in quiet locations to explore a hobby that I enjoy WITHOUT INTERRUPTION. Doing this at least once (or twice or more) per month does a lot for clearing my mind and my soul. This makes me more effective at all of those other things that keep me busy all of the other days of the month.

    Single biggest reason I don't go to club meets. They're scheduled poorly for someone who isn't retired and there's little information often on what's going to happen. I'm not going to go out of my way for "meeting wed night". Give me something more. What's the usual meeting structure? how big is the usual turnout? Is anything going to happen besides the boring bit?
    Second. Guys the internet has changed since 1996. The most popular HF mode is digital. Can we get the club website to look like it belongs in this millennia? I have no interest in going and hanging with a bunch of gray hairs that aren't with it and your website that was last updated before I was born screams you're not up to date.

    One of the main issues with clubs is that they often completely miss focus. The "club", as they understand it, isn't the focus anymore. I would suggest that there are many active, fulfilled operators that would be less-so if they had been exposed to the typically ham radio club. The only questions that matter are "what brings people to ham radio and what keeps them on the air". I was glad to see you hit that heavily at the end.

    Another great video, Josh. I love asking questions on your socials since you push inclusion and not ridicule. That means a lot. We have a lot of technical types in my area, but they are not ones I would go to for simple questions. I am a Electrical Engineer (retired) and I love the tech side of the hobby like building antennas. I also like the social aspect. RUclips is more of my ham club than other options. Just got to the end of the main talk and I'd say it was excellent. One thing I'll say is clubs need better websites for younger hams that grew up on the internet. So many ham clubs look like old message board sites and the information isn't easy to find and we are used to being able to find the basics on a site. If the information tab says email so and so for more information you will lose a lot of people that were just a bit curious.
    That being said it all comes with some balance. Club members are volunteer and new hams should have some understanding a volunteer run website isn't as sleek as Amazon, but I'll tell you there are a lot of ham websites I've gotten into for clubs/products/information that look very web 1.0 and I begin to consider if I really care about what I'm looking for. I know it sounds incredibly picky but I think it's the truth of the matter.

    One thing that turned me away a bit from my local ares group is a strict dress code for meetings. I understand some regulations but when the website says a dress code of business casual is the expected minimum it definitely makes the club feel like a bunch of older folks that care how we dress and it just gives a very stuffy feel. It even specifically lists jeans as only acceptable on Fridays.

    • @Dusty_Ham
      @Dusty_Ham Год назад

      @@Blake-jl8lh I mean, even if city officials show up, it's a club for a hobby at the end of the day. It's very over the top to force members to dress up. My club has councilors, the head of police, head of the fire department and many other high flooting officials come through all the time. It doesn't change how we present ourselves. It just seems odd to me I guess.

    100% agree that reaching new potential hams (of any age group) is right now best accomplished by YT and other media channels, especially your Discord. Ideal methods for me to engage with this hobby, and I'm older than your stated target age range (55). You're not going to find me at clubs and most likely not at many group events. But you will find me always monitoring Discord and catching YTs while I'm figuring out where this hobby fits into my existence and other hobbies (adv motorcycle travel, 4x4, RV travel). Just my humble opinion, but the previous generation's idea of 'club' no longer fits in today's world. Our 'clubs' today are online and dispersed around the world. No disrespect intended to our older generation (I find myself rapidly joining those ranks), but the idea of community is no longer only confined to the concept of a local meeting space. Think bigger ;)
