At the end of 5x13 “The Big Bang,” the 11th Doctor gets a call from Gus in the TARDIS, mentioning “a mummy on the orient express.” 📞 🚂 🧟♂️ The 12th Doctor references it in this episode… that Gus has reached out to him before.
Actually the call references "An Egyptian Goddess" on the Orient Express. They had a rethink when the episde was written. And, for Jay, yes it was a real train fro Paris to Istanbul. Still runs - sort of - but as a tourist attraction using historical carriages rather than a scheduled service
I'll be honest I swore a lot at your questioning whether the Orient Express was real. But I took a step back. It's good for me to remember that not everybody's cultural and literary experiences are the same as mine. It was a great reaction, though. And this and Flatline are two of my favourite Capaldi episodes. They just shimmer.
