- There is a photo on one of the walls in the studio that Peter took many years ago of a model in a cropped denim jacket, and we recently received a comment asking about the story behind it. This prompted Peter to start a series of portraits of models wearing it. This BTS video is of him and Bec starting the series.

This channel is an endless wellspring of portrait photography knoweldge. Thanks so much for sharing! You two rock!
Our pleasure, thank you
Well said
The instant I saw the scratches personal experience told me that someone got a new kitty. Congratulations! 🐈
Yep, I too spotted the evidence of a "cat related incident" straight away; been there, got the injuries. My cat is a 5kg ginger tom; the reason I wear cat proof shorts (cut down jeans) in hot weather.
Yep me too, got two wild cats. Nice to trade the tattoos for the scratches in this photo shoot.
Peter, the way you capture Bec’s beauty is astonishing. Bravo to both of you.
Thank you
Thing is, without Bec, this channel would be very lame & boring, sad but true.
The technical details, experimenting and raw curiosity of you two is refreshing. The way you two brought the background, body form, facial expressions and light together is beautiful.
Thanks so much
Bec, for someone that insists she is not a model, you remind me a lot of the models from back when the term Supermodel was first appearing. Kathy Ireland, Christie Brinkley, Cheryl Tiegs and others that were so much more than just a face.
Well, I still believe that Bec is still the best model of all time. What a gem. Selfie's or not she is a beautiful girl period...I wish I had a model like her when I was in studio.
Great video and thanks for sharing...Peace
Thank you
Bec's gaze - I love it. Intense, slightly defiant. Like, "I'm not a bad girl, unless provoked", hehe! Fantastic stuff as usual, everyone! Cheers - //Rick
Thank you
The size and placement of that “old” beauty dish creates a gorgeous catchlight. It’s also great to watch Bec utilize your guidance about projecting her eyes.
Thank you
So nice, so beautiful model! 😍 Natural shapes! It's ideal in my opinion! And light is perfect for her! Thank you for video!
Thank you! 😊
Love the lighting and the exposure. Love B&W photos. Love the detail in the shadows. My first camera was a polaroid when I was a kid. I've always liked them since then.
Thanks so much
I love watching Bec and Peter you never know what they are doing or getting Bec into. Peter is smart he stays behind the camera. seen yeah have a robot to follow Bec around at a shoot with the phone.
Thanks heaps glad you enjoyed it
Fun shoot! I liked seeing the shots Bec took just based on feeling. That's going to be an exciting series.
Thanks
Bec, rest assured… a beautiful image. Well done Peter, brilliant work.
Thank you
Its apleasure watching the two of you work together to get the shot. A display of true professionalism
Thanks so much
Thanks guys. That was really interesting. Your dialogue sharing each other's considerations, feelings and observations is remarkable. Such a unique approach with interaction feedback between the photographer and model. The evaluation of the images in conjunction with what was happening in the headspace was extremely enlightening. It felt like a peak experience of learning. Please do more of that. Beck captured a beautiful portrait of herself. There was one photo that really stood out. It looked amazing. She should really be proud of that one. It would make a great headshot. Peter, I hang on your every word. You share so much valuable information and experience. I learn a lot from you two. Thank you. 📸 Happy Easter! 🐰
Wow thank you so much , happy easter
Another great video. I learn something and/or get my own ideas from your work every single time I watch. Keep up the awesome work you two.
Awesome! Thank you!
Bec is very beautiful and takes great photos
Excellent video.
Bec is one of the few who says,. I CAN DO BETTER, so professional, love it.
Great interaction between photographer and model.
You both are very blessed with eachother.
Thanks for sharing😮
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks heaps
Bec is such an amazing "studio assistant/photographers assistant / model wrangler/model/etc..." - - - Peter you really lucked out with her - - you two work so well together
Yes thanks heaps
I have always said Bec has the best eyes of any model you shoot. Not that anything else is bad, but the eyes really pull you in to the picture.
Yes, I agree
Very, very, interesting. I loved the idea of Bec taking her own portraits with clicker. So surprising when she said she didn't like it . I'd have thought she would love being in control with all her experience, but no. It reminded me of Andy Warhols movie portraits. He sat the subject down in front of a movie camera and let it run for two minutes. Salvador Dali started out haughty but collapsed into a wreck before the time was up . Bob Dylan remained exactly as his persona as Bob Dylan. Thanks for another great experience, best wishes Bec and Peter, Jake E.
Hello Peter and Bec!!! I enjoyed so much with this session!!! Have a great day!!!
Thank you! You too!
I loved EVERY SINGLE photo you guys took.
Thanks heaps
Ive been doing a series with the same Beneton tweed jacket since 2017. I can't even remember how many models have worn it but it's simply titled "The Jacket Series". Ive had so much fun using it and no shoot has been the same.
I love doing series
Looking forward to seeing more in the series. A simple set up i’ll look forward to having a go with.
Coming soon thanks
Superb work. You cannot take a bad shot of Beck, perhaps some are just better than others. Even that’s debatable. Thank you for giving us a peak into how two professional work through a shoot, the complete honesty between the two of you is beyond refreshing. Be well.
Thank you
Wow, wow, Wow, Bec you looked absolutely gorgeous!
Well done to you both!
Thank you
What a super way of working. So good to see and hear the tips of how to take this sort of image, or is it art
Thank you very much!
She's a remarkable beauty!
Like it very much!
The ideas behind and the open speech about it!
Well done!
Thanks
Good video. Love watching your photography. Love seeing the tethering results. Love seeing the values you use for the background the skin the darks. This reminds me of the 50 mm video where Meka would work hard and look at the camera and then relax and look away. Love seeing all the little micro differences between the expressions.
Thanks so much!
Hey you two!! I have to say that having Bec as your muse is amazing luck!! She has certainly been evolving as a model but when you have eyes like she does, I think that's a huge hurdle towards getting a finished shot that you like. Eyes that can express or emote feelings and even action can elevate a shoot from producing an image as opposed to a "cover". The last few times I've been out of the house/studio for a shoot I've been hauling along a couple C-stands and arms so I can pose some scenic foreground to add some depth to a portrait, being careful as to not frame the subject. I think this centers the eye on the person in the portrait. Just by clamping a branch with a few leaves a few feet in front of the subject makes your eye want to move past the foreground but also creates more overall interest. I really want to thank-you Peter for all the lessons, tips and ways to direct the subject to create the image you want. You have become an indispensable resource, as has Bec and I just thought I should share that with you. I hope you're both well and look forward to more information I can glean from your videos!! Take care - Dave
Thanks so much for your support
That was really interesting- the self shots vs micro poses vs natural photographer/model shots in the beginning - the slight change in the way Bec was standing…
Those subtle variations and effect on the mood of the shot -
Thanks so much for sharing!
Thanks for watching
Great vid, thanks guys always inspiring !
Thanks for watching!
Cool video 👍 And it's nice to see that Bec and her cat are still having fun with "fighting" each other 😘
Thank you
I always enjoy these!
Thanks
I had no idea what was going to happen once you gave Bec a remote. ;)
Very Cool, Bec's amazing how she never thinks she's given her best. But she is.
Yes most shoots
Polaroids have that organic magic to them. A tangible piece of evidence of a capture in time. A little painting thanks to chemistry.
Polaroids?; lol!! Utter crap- I can say that since I had Polaroid backs for all three formats…35, medium, large since the 1970s. NO color fidelity except for the 4x5 stuff….and they all FADE like crazy.
Bec sure has changed over the years. Much more confidence, videography skills, and still nice person. This was a good video. You should let her direct a new model. I think she would do well, both would enjoy it, I think.
Glad you enjoyed it! And thanks for the suggestion
Thank you for sharing this experience. 🙂
Thanks for watching!
Agree
Great work never dissipated! Love that I now know about the selfie face. I love the light with the beauty dish, could a big ring flash do the job as a beauty dish? Ever thought about the moon unit from paul c buff?
Thanks so much. Yes you could use a ring flash if you didn't put your camera in the middle and just used it as a light. Haven't heard of the moon unit but I'll have a look
Sometimes I love "high end" pictures or retouching processes, sometimes I hate because it's not really "photography". Photography is art, and art is FULLY FREE.
Funny when you put your job on the line entrusting Bec with taking her own photos. 🤣
Bec in a marching jacket goes together like a G note and "Carry on" Haha.
Lol :)
Interesting video. Great job both of you!
thank you glad you enjoyed it!
*WOW* Bec is gorgeous!
Always fun to watch.. so you used the one with hair over the chest area... i was saying to the TV when Bec was shooting.. HAIR HAIR HAIR....( i thought you wanted it clean) haha...
amazing Peter, love these shots! What surprise me is that so often my eyes catches what you are being to say.
hope to find a model for this kind of portraits, really love this mood!
.
PS: Bec best answer ever to the Peter question...
Peter: What i shoot or what you shoot?!
Bec: Your shoots, because i can take selfies on my iphone anytime...
Peter:
Thank you
Bec, I figured the scratches were from a kitty, or you went a little wild with a new manicure. Lol. And hopefully we get to see more videos of you guys working with models in the jacket. :)
I hope so too! Thank you
Bec you are stupidly gorgeous OMG. So cool having you be such a professional photo nerd at the same time. Glad you two are working together it seems like a very good match.
Thanks heaps
I realize photography and filmmaking differ in so many areas, but Bec would be super in music videos. Peter, I'm sure you have the chops to make a great music video with Bec. So many super bands in Australia --- I'm thinking Tame Impala, or Arctic Monkeys in the UK or the Strokes in USA, Lord Huron, Massive Attack and why not, the F###ing Rolling Stones. They had a stunning model in one of their most recent music videos. Why not Bec as model and Peter as the filmmaker. :)
Sign of a great artist -- striving for perfection and believes it hasn't been reached.
Microposing --- I learn quite a bit during these shoots. Thanks!
Thanks heaps, I love doing music videos
Excellent work as usual. I hope we see more of the little kitten!
Thanks, the kitten is now a cat
Yay! New kitty 🐈 congrats! What breed is it? 🥹
She's amazing❤
Loved the experiments!
Thank you
Looking great there Bec!!!
Bec is always best into these dark outfits, gives some goth vibe, and could even fit into Brandon Lee's mighty The Crow from 1994.
Awesome presentation and results...
Thank you!
Bec's eyes are so amazing! I just get pulled in2 their orbit! kind of reminds me of the road photo shoot. but without the sun, and wardrobe. black fabrics fits well with her tones!
though she looks so stunning in just short en jean bleu.. good luck ya'll..may be womens lingerie will come back!
She's beautiful and has such a lovely voice 🥰
Is he the unknown brother of James May from Top Gear? Great Job!
Kitten claws are no joke!
"She's not bare, she's got a hat on. " Still chuckling over that
Glorious!!!
You look great Bec very stunning and beautiful hope all is well with u guys
Thanks so much, yes all cool
Great chemistry
Bec.. I know you mentioned the cat scratches before the video but I kept catching myself trying to clean my screen thinking that the scratches were some smudge on my screen. lol
Lols
what jacket ?
Did you never thought above getting rid of your glasses? Seems they could get quite annoying on a stressful day?... Great job
Thanks yes
That was fun and educational. Would love you to do a seminar in Texas.
Very soon, in the fall
Maronnnnn che bocce perfette, la gravità questa sconosciuta; ora posso morire felice!
Great collaboration
Thank you
That jacket must be stapled to Bec!
Thanks for sharing.
Our pleasure!
I have real problems trying to make eye contact with Bec.
same!
Peter, You're still using the Hasselblad? I thought you moved to Leica as you didn't want to burn out that amazing piece of kit. Amazing videos as always. :)
Yes I now own 3 so I'm not as worried
Hi Peter and Bec, thanks for sharing all your thoughts, skills and tips, it really is much appreciated and very helpful. I have a quick question, I’m thinking of going back to a Hasselblad H system, I really miss that viewfinder..!!!
I currently use Capture One but am happy to try Phocus… but is it really as bad as ‘some’ people say..? I’d buy back into the H system with either a H4 or H5. Any insights would be a great help.
Thx again
Steve
Thanks Steve glad it was helpful. H4 and H5 Hasselblad is fine, I'm not sure if youre aware but the H6 backs can't be repaired because they dont have any spares. I love the Phocus system and personally can't stand the over digitalisation of Capture One for my taste
Cheers Peter for the quick reply, I’ll give Phocus a go..!! I agree totally that C1 can easily look too ‘digi’. The funny thing is that here in London, all the younger trendy ad agency ‘kids’ day to me ‘can you shoot film..?’
It makes me laugh for so many reasons but in truth, part of that reason is because C1 in the wrong hands looks too digital..
I can pick up a H4D kit here quite inexpensively so I’ll give it a whirl… I really miss that viewfinder…
Keep up the great work on your channel, 👍👍
Steve
@@PeterCoulsonPhotographer cheers Peter, I picked up an H4x and 80mm, jeeps my options open, it’s 14yrs since I sold my H2… I’d forgotten how much I missed that BRIGHT viewfinder..! Thx again guys.
🤩
beautiful
Thank you! 😊
Great presentation would’ve been nice if you would have put a fake tattoo on Bec or necklace for the full affect !
How much clothing do you keep around? How often do you have the models bring their own wardrobe?
The rack of clothing you can see in this video is all my favourite stuff at the studio we use for shoots but I also have a full wardrobe of stuff out the back. I then usually ask models to bring anything cool they want to shoot in and we use a mix of my stuff and theirs
Emergency Exit. Keep Clear. ;)
it's not in use
Kitties and their 'Murder Mittens".
GOOD Teaching~
Thank you! 😃
❤❤❤❤
Thank you
I'm trying to get good at taking portrait shots and I have a question about camera height. Do you set the camera at the same height as the model or at least to the same eye line as the model?
The close-up portraits are like to be the same height as the eyes or just below
👍❤️🔥
That “Something“ about the Polaroid is that they all look like hostage photos.
Bella/Linda.💘💋💗👄😯😮🥵🎂👑
I have been doing Polaroids on every shoot too. At least one per look.
I'm really enjoying doing 1 polaroid each shoot
Why is backstreet boys larger than life playing in my head with checking the photos
The moment she takes the remote trigger, does she become the copyright owner of the ensuing shots?
No whoever owns the memory card owns the copyright
@@PeterCoulsonPhotographer so that’s how it works. Thanks
micro management, yup works decently with newer models, at the moment working with my muse to get her more natural , hard work mind you
What are the specifications of that backdrop ?
Painted timber
Was there any diffuser on the dish?
No just a grid
I thought the model in the older picture had more of a head down/eyes up look to her, but very nice shots of Bec nonetheless.
We weren't trying to copy the Models expression and look just the jacket and the lighting
Tasty video
peter, i wish i knew about anything what you know about light.
It's just a lot of practice
holy moley
