- Peter loves shooting outdoors and with natural light but it can be hard with unpredictable weather. If it's overcast, there is not direction of light which causes all kinds of problems. In this video, Peter shows you how using these awesome little lights from Zhiyun can easily and inexpensively fix a lot of these problems.

I like the way Peter constantly gives the models feedback
Thank you
Between Two Ferns with Peter Coulson 😂 Great tutorial. Thanks
You bet!
I love the “field trips” and how easy Peter makes it look. Great job by all!
Thanks so much!
@@PeterCoulsonPhotographer Although, we didn't hear any "I HATE NATURE" from Bec this time! 🤣🤣
me: never EVER use your flash on your camera. It always looks bad.
Peter: hold my beer and pay attention ya dolt.
me: well, shit.
😁
I know black and white is your thing but I couldn't help but think about how cool these would look in color!
This is the amazing thing with LED, if your getting bi colour, usually 2300 - 6500 kelvin range or full rgb, having not only CCT range, but full RGB with + - green shift, as the bi colour kelvin never usually follows the plankian curve, so the shift towards green or magenta can be corrected. Also gives you the possibility or colour matching, using a sekonic C-800 spectrometer, the temp of the main source of your light or making a creative decision and doing the total opposite complimenting the colour. This is bordering towards cinematography lighting, colour temps, complimentary colours, contrast ratios, creating depth in a scene...
Absolutely beautiful hero shot. The last couple minutes of the session was pure gold. I learned a lot in terms of moving the light to create subtle desire effects. Amazing opportunity to control the light on the fly. The lighting in the final shot does not look like the same model from where we started with the barn doors. Brilliant tutorial for situations many photographers face outside of a studio. Excellent example of how simple and little, the lighting situation one needs to create very 'cool' photos. 📸🌞
Thank you
@@PeterCoulsonPhotographer Thank you, Peter, for sharing your vast knowledge and experience. 📸🌞
Nice experiment with handheld lighting, the shadows are not nearly as distracting as I'd have guessed and definitely smooths the facial structure and skin. Thanks for the ideas!
Thank you
No mosquitos or other blood-eaters in forest??? You so happy! ;) Natural backgroud + nice models = exellent photos! Thank you for video!
The best advice out of this is, carry, and USE, your flash lights.... . A flash can always make a big difference in daylight.
I'm liking this channel more and more.
Thanks so much
I like those lights alot. Been looking at some just did not know what they would be used for but they have the power and just what I need. And our friend Ana is looking awesome as usual.
I love the small LED lights for outdoor shoots. A lot easier than fill flash.
Yes they are!
These lights are nice and small, so they have that ease of use. I recently got some battery-powered LED panels with stands that basically let me set up a studio anywhere I want.
I would love to see a review from someone like yourself, because I frankly have no idea what I'm doing with studio shooting!
I haven't tried LED panels yet
Ana's super cute. Well explained, Peter.
Luv ya Bec!!🥰
Thank you! 😃

Thank you
Anna was amazing, thank you for the wonderful video
Thank you too!
The Zhiyun kit is amazing
Nice job Peter I have a light like that
I use it a lot for my weddings shots keep up the great work Peter and bac your awesome as always 👏 Paul
Thanks so much Paul
Thanks Peter and talent. By complete coincidence I'm shooting a doco next month in an identical environment at Melbourne's Dandenong Ranges and your video has inspired me. I've now ordered the Zhiyun M40 (40W model) with diffuser based on your recommendation.
hope it works for you
Thanks for showing these lights! Think i will get one or two of the 20W version.
Did a nude shooting a week ago, and was using my LED lights, but without a grid its hard to controll...
Special forming the shadows, looked to flat....
And the idea of a light on camera, so you can move and the light moves as well is nice!
Great video. Iv'e just bought the first light, can't wait to use it now.
Hope you enjoy it!
Call me old fashioned but I got the impression Miss Ana was channelling Veronica Lake for this shoot . Not just the hair , but the intensity of expression as well as the sublime beauty. I can't pay a higher compliment, and now I'll have to look at another piece of equipment I don't got ! Great job all round, best wishes, Jake E.
I preferred the first unit with the more directional/spot feature. I liked the background going darker, more mysterious imo and even the shallow DOF helped that along.
Yes so do I
Bec, looks so comfortable in the wild outdoors
Lol yes Bec hates the outdoors
That's funny cause because bec hates outdoors,
Now put bec in a restaurant, candlelight setting, some red wine and soft music in the background. Then you got a bec photoshoot. Lol
I love to add in a backlight as well to add dimension :) I have also found using an area that's darker but facing an open light space makes the light usable.
It is great to see you work outside with the Leica@
Many thanks for this new behind the scenes video.
@B: You are the best in the forest, with those amazing dark greens, out of a book of fairytales, being that kind of creature that one hardly find, that requires to go deep to meet her, and when nobody expects, … she shows up, but just a few seconds, and then she vanishes, traceless disappearance.
@A: Many thanks for posing in this session. You are quite brave, because based on what B and P are wearing, it looks like it is cold. I am aware this is not about posing, but the poses with the arms up, around 10:28, replicating the “arms of the tree” behind, are amazing.
@P: My understanding is that the main problem with overcasting days is not the scarce light but the clouds above that act as an infinite diffuser, preventing richness in light direction, and canceling the light contrasts that shapes and textures require. The motivation I have to use flash lighting is becoming less and less every day. I rather prefer to have a very high ISO, that may harm the quality of the photograph, than using the flash I have. But this just my preference, as non-pro. I wonder what Models prefer (I mean they feel better), flash light or constant light. I would like to experiment moving constant light around the Model (in circle), to identify the richest silhouette shapes, something similar to what you do when you hold and move with the hand the lighting device.
Wow! That last shot you showed was really nice.
Thanks
Great video I learnt so much ❤ thank you😊
Glad it was helpful!
Gave me a bunch of cool ideas to test outdoors with LEDs! We need more trips into nature, if nothing else just to make Bec uncomfortable 😜 Thanks guys, that was cool and inspiring!
Couldn't agree more!
now that is a handy little 20W light, will have to add one to my kit
Cool video! Like the light and intro clothing choice!
Thanks, I'm glad you like it
This session reminded me why ISO of 100 is the best for less / to no detectable grain, at a normal viewing distance, (not magnified). (While utilizing a small format camera).
As usual your videos are educational and thought provoking. Is there a situation where you would use an LED light for fill in broad daylight?
Yes if the model was backlit by the sun
casually roasting the model
always
Those are great little lights. I have a set of that model as well...one RGB and one bicolor. They are lifesavers for exactly this kind of fill work. So much easier and faster than trying to dial in a camera mount strobe, even one with a modeling light. Just several steps less fussy to deal with.
Yes they are!
That "bush" looks very Jurassic!
Yes and this is where I live ❤️
Great model
Yes
Yes Sir, I'agree...
Yep, Peter strikes my wallet again!!, I just ordered a FIVERAY M20C with all of the trimmings.
thanks master, On this occasion, I would have liked to see the color result. Nice location
LED lighting has come a long way. It was so hard to get the right tone, but I guess the BW takes out THAT challenge.
I'm a B&W photographer 😁
The best outdoor lighting tool is a step ladder. The problem with outdoor skylight for portraits is the steep downward angle of the light which results in the brow shading the eye sockets. Granted that’s OK for a moody detached “go away don’t bother me” body language message but bright eyes are more inviting in terms of connecting.
Adding artificial light over the ambient isn’t a solution for the dark eye sockets. Yes it will make them brighter but still not as bright as the highlights on the cheekbones below, nose, chin and forehead.
It is possible to bounce light upwards with a reflector under the face that creates a crossed lighting situation. What is better is to simply have the subject lift their eyes to look 20° or so above the horizon, just enough to get the the light past the brow, then also raise the position and POV of the camera keep the same relationship of sensor and face parallel //. There will be some near-far perspective on the body below which can be controlled by shooting from further away and then zooming in for the same in camera crop.
When adding artificial light on top of ambient one just needs to be cognizant of its downward angle and match the artificial KEY light to it. One needs a rather tall stand to do that.
Color temp / Tint also gets complicated under foliage because the daylight filtering through and reflecting off green foliage gives the light a green tint. You will not see it while shooting because eyes adapt to it. Adding green to pinkish skin and it creates an odd gray pallor with camera WB set to Daylight or Cloudy.
If shooting ambient only or ambient + reflectors setting custom WB will correct the WB and tint in the camera’s JPG playback and the RAW file metadata so RAW files will be R=B=G
balanced when opening. Alternately just have the subject hold the card in a test shot then correct with eye dropper on card in that file and copy / paste WB/Tint metadata to other files.
Things become a bit of a muddle if adding artificial over greenish ambient. If WB is set to match the artificial source (flash or daylight balanced LED) in the foreground the background illuminated by just the ambient will look green by comparison. It might seem odd but the solution is to put a green CC gel over the artificial source so it matches the ambient then do custom WB off the gray card or shoot it for adjustment in post.
For me personally, outdoor photography does not need artificial light, it is the search for capturing real light, you just have to move and see where the different types of lighting are. Studio light is the one that requires artificial light, it is the talent of the photographer how he illuminates the object, whether it is Rembrandt light, lateral light or some other way...
I don't normally use artificial light outdoors but sometimes you have to because the client wants this location with bad light
Peter, you mentioned in a recent interview that you were in the process of converting to constant light. Please do a vid on Inspire talking about your conversion, lights purchased and why you are converting. Thanks!
I've got heaps of constant lights coming soon :)
very nice session
Thanks
Beautiful
Thank you
I've walked around Olinda and Sassafras VIC, which looks like where this shoot was done... also Russian River CA and run into this lighting trouble all the time. I'd definitely like to see more Outdoor "how to" in low light videos. And one of these days see Anna's band around Melbourne. Seems like The Tote could be a venue (IDK)
Love the Tote

@@PeterCoulsonPhotographer Thanks for the info.
Interesting. I've always found overcast days to be better for portraits than strong sunny light ... I guess it is a Yin-Yang question of balance (light/shade/tone/colour) and bringing out the life in the model (not a statue though sometimes statuesque!). At first sight it almost counts against shooting "En plein air" but I see it is another way painting with light to get closer to your desired photograph!
It is so hard to control light on heavy overcast days because there is no direction of light. It's just everywhere.
So good guys ❤️
looks like a great little light. are you in europe now?
They are very handy. No we leave for Europe next week
Good video but I am not a fan of on camera flash direct to your subject without diffusion.
Have you ever tried a Rogue FlashBender XL, they resize the light surface and you can bend the sides to shape the direction of the light, but small enough when folded to take with you everywhere.
Anyways, thanks for sharing
no never heard of it
@@PeterCoulsonPhotographer check them out, cheap and very good
There is no foreground and no background with Ana. There’s just Ana.
Hey Peter, how does Anna feel about looking into the constant light continually? Hard on the eyes? Cheers
Ana said she had no problem with this light
That was my biggest concern too. I feel like I don't get as good of facial expression when they are blinded. But if it was sunny day that might be looking at that- and this isn't nearly as bright as the sun!
Very Nice ! ❤
Thank you! Cheers!
Peter, Bec! Great content as always, i have a question for Peter, You could get VERY INTRESSTING images if you were to send in your camera to do a full spectrum hassleblad by removing its infrared filter. Im sure you know this and you love black and white.
I prefer to use the RGB channels for my B&W
@@PeterCoulsonPhotographer I see , I dont know if u ever used a full spectrum camera , but could be an intressting experiment, maybe renting one or something.
I bet the model loves Peters's comment at the start of the video. 🤣
If models know I can see their imperfections they know I'm going to fix them :)
Great vid
Thank you
Great shoot out! Outdoor shoots are interesting and challenging by conditions and locations. Luckily you don't shoot with animals, that would take challenges to whole new level. 😆 Would be interesting to see what kind of outdoor photos you would take via car side mirror and rear view mirror what happens outside and inside the car. Different view angle. Any way thanks again, good work 👍
yes, did that many years ago on a lingerie campaign
Amazing
Thanks
I want to see them in color.
Good model.
I'm a B&W photographer 😁
Don't a lot of photographers go for higher contrast than this for black and white?
@@PeterCoulsonPhotographer
Will a reflector bounce from the bottom or from the side save the problem?
A reflector would do a bit of work but on an overcast day in the forrest its not going to pick up enough light to fill the main problems
Nossa, mas o que é isso? Peter você é bom no estúdio e no mato. Serei como você um dia, você é demais!!!!
Thanks so much
muito obrigado
Maybe this is a dumb question, but why not just a strobe? What is the advantage of the LED other than you can see your composition continuously?
that and some strobes don't turn down enough
I just don't understand why people are so freaked out by shadows and the way things actually look outdoors
“Imperfections, bags under her eyes, pimples, not attractive”. Next, he gets Ana to take her kit off after saying such nice words. You sweet talker Peter! I bet you use that technique on all the girls!

I thought an overcast sky diffused the light from the sun and made it even. No overexposure or underexposure. 🤷🏻♂️ Lights can give you the contrast and drama you want.
even gives you no direction of light, on control to fix problems
Aren't you blinding your model with it?
no Ana said it was fine
Please tell me much watts your little led has .
20 watts
How does the model get paid?
By me, how do you get paid?
@@PeterCoulsonPhotographerBack when I was drawing pay, here is how it worked: some little organizations, mostly nonprofits, located in or near Baltimore, Maryland, US, wanted to use the WWW to communicate to the public. So they were willing to pay a little outfit to build up websites for them, including in each case, an ability to edit content without technical help. I was paid by that little outfit for writing some of the code to make the websites work and meet the requirements of the client organizations.
How do you translate the pictures into revenue, so you don't go broke paying the models?
@@b43xoit We make money from our RUclips and private streaming site, and we pay the models accordingly from that.
Crocodile Peter Coulson
that's knot a knife
@@PeterCoulsonPhotographer Oh yeah that was a great scene! In NY however. An Olympus camera repairman told me a customer had the same experience and knocked them down with his OM2 with winder, as he used to be in the marines.
I love your work and the way you work.... but I would love to see you shoot some everyday looking people and not very pretty models that seem to make the photo work regardless (because of their beauty distracts the viewer's eyes)
I'm a commercial photographer. My clients don't tend to send me every day people that's what Portrait photographers do.
Is this the same girl who cried for her album cover?
Yes
nice model. She would be more evocative with a madonna smile.
The girl doesn't have a bad angle. What a package!!!
Way to give the quite attractive model a freaking complex by criticizing her natural facial structure as she's right there listening to you (0:36). I get that light renders the skin and facial structure differently depending on direction and diffusion, and you have a preference for artificially smooth skin in that fashion magazine way, but you might want to reconsider your words. Sheesh.
If you listened I Said bad lighting brings out every little imperfection on skin and the models don't want that
I'd be afraid of all those nasty poisonous insects you have there 😵💫
what poison insects
spiders 😅
Pretty gutsy to stand there and point out all the flaws on a woman's face. She and Bec could hide your body out there in the woods where it would never be found 🙂
😂
Лифчик тут лишний.
Boring pictures, no composition.
I would love to see your work if you have the balls to share it 😁
@@PeterCoulsonPhotographer I just found this particular session and outcome particularly boring. Just my opinion. Now I have seen other works you have made in between my comment and yes they are so much better and you obviously know way better than I do. Yes my comment came out strong and was unwarranted and I apologise for this. All the best.

You guys shoot humans: aren't humans natural? "Here we are out 'in nature' " strikes me as an absurd statement considering the context: you shoot natural humans...
