In the mid-2000s I was skint. I loved photography, so a cheap Nikon, handed down to me from my mother, became my camera and editing done with Picasa. I still love those shots!
Great job Peter, and very true statement gear doesn’t matter a beautiful model doesn’t matter understanding lights and shadows and basic camera knowledge will get us ahead of many. And Bec, you’ve grown so much from the inter webs intros of the past. Great team work.

That's exactly it, it is not the material that makes a beautiful photo, but the sensitivity of the model and the photographer, the eye of the photographer and the model.
Natural light and an expressive model that plays with the camera + the eye of the photographer = has a magnificent photo.

So that's how you set the diopter! Focus the text. I used to use the autofocus and then adjust the diopter to get the same focus in the viewfinder. LOL. Great video.
Burst mode in “Peter Lindbergh style” is giving very live emotional photos
"Why do I have super expensive cameras? Because it makes me feel good." And I learnt this the hard way, after switching from a modest bridge camera to a Sony APSC and now to a Nikon Z. Realised that with the "right light" I could've achieved similar results on all three systems.
Anyway, I love the Z5 that I currently own. I only wish I'd come across your channel before diving into the photography rabbit hole on RUclips. Would've saved my quite a bit of money and many, many hours of my life that I wasted watching gear reviews and worrying about my gear.

I don't think you have to explain yourself to anyone about your gear. One thing I remember from your videos is that you mentioned you've been in business for 30+ years and it must be respected and appreciated. You've been feeding us with some great lessons and tutorials and everyone must follow and do so with whatever they have on hand. However, when doing some great models and commercial shoots, the better the materials, the better the results.
Don't worry about the haters out there. They'll always exist and find a way to disapprove of your work. Keep doing what you do best and God bless you. I appreciate your work and learn what I can from you and do with I have.
Thank you so muh Rob, I really appreciate it. Of course working commerically you need to have a certain quality of gear, I just wanted to show people that when you're just starting out you don't need to have the most expensive kit and you can still take beautiful photos
Definitely agree. Learned a ton from Peter since I started watching his channel a month ago... And it greatly improved my published work on the same equipment I was using before I started watching him.
It's crazy, I never thought things flowed uphill, only down. This is what I mean.
Those people who point their fingers, attempting to chop for having great equipment, are the same ones that point their fingers at me, accusing me of manipulation or stealing photos because I use the Canon SL1.
There is no winning with those people. You have worked incredibly hard to get where you are at, to produce the photos you creat, just to get bashed on one end, and I get it from the other end. 😊

In all seriousness, working with a great model makes a _huge_ difference to the quality of images captured.
Modelmayhem with people looking to start as a model. People wanting TFP! You could try there...
@@AlexJacksonSmith The likes of Modelmayhem are full of "not-a-model" types, as Peter calls them. And I agree with him ; so many of them want an image to be shot in a specific way ( usually for what's trending on Instagram ) rather than what the client wants.
dj suth well if you paying them, you are the client. You can get the shots that you want. And event if it TFP, you can get the shots you want if you talk with them before hand.
Instagram ist filled with girls like these that love to be photographed. Just write them and ask for collaboration. It's that simple.

I found out once again today that the location is super super important. The way the light acts especially if you are using some of bounces the light does makes a huge difference if you have a very high ceiling and you have a very big room.
I found out that a low white ceiling is a nightmare to shoot under. And if the room is also small with white walls it will becomes even worse and that's not a gear thing that's a studio thing, but i consider a studio part of your "gear"
So yes you can make some kind of shots with just a window light. But you definitely cannot make a lot of shots in a small white box of a room.

Hello from France, thank you a lot for putting new interesting videos online these days. I still don't get that people continue to say that the gear is doing everything. First of all I think they never had an Hasselbald in hands, because it is everything but easy to use, I might try to give mine to my model next time I shoot so she can figure out. The only phrase is that people can make great photos with the gear they know how to use, period. And when someone is as experienced as you are, maybe he or she can use whatever he or she wants and still make awesome photos. It's fair, It's nice, to show how it is possible to shoot without expensive cameras/lenses or massive gear ! Thanks for this. BTW...As Cartier Bresson said I think pictures are made 1st with eyes, head and heart, not with camera.

Expensive equipment gives you: convenience, reliability, choice, and in very rare and specific instances depending on what field of photography you are in - better quality pictures technically. For amateurs, its just about vanity and laziness, for professionals its mainly about fear of not appearing to be professional by clients.

That's s setup is the size of my whole studio 😂
One of the first shoots I did was a mock wedding shoot and there were a lot of pro togs trying out their expensive gear and I only had my 7100 with the 40mm f2. 8 lens. But after I had edited the photos and posted them to the meetup group the pro togs were jealous as my photos turned out better than theirs, not bad for a blinky tog 😎😎😎

The gear you use will dictate the nature of your photos, but not how good they are. Similar photos to the ones Peter took in this video could have been taken on an old bottom of the range DSLR with a slow 18-55 kit lens. The background with the smaller aperture of the kit lens wouldn't be so far out of focus, but it doesn't matter. What does matter is just doing it; don't put it off because you don't have some fast, exotic lens, take your photos with what you've got. You'll be glad you did.

Eat the meat and spit out the bones. That's what i have done with peters tips and advice. And i have produced nice photos. It was a game changer for me. I don't have peters gear and i have produced photos similar to his. I use a Canon R and L lenses and sigma lenses and godox lights. It's not the gear that makes good photos, it helps but it's not the main thing. It's mastering light and composition..

I finally got around to watching this, while I agree about most quality lenses and cameras don't have to cost $5,000 for a quality kit and to get good captures. I don't agree when it comes to post production. You can't shortcut on quality displays, basic core color management hardware and software, ICC Compliant processes and a proper editing environment.
Too many users creating images and (I suspect) not properly seeing what's really in the file. At least I like to think that as the alternatives are that it's really their art or that they're motivationaly challenged.
Be it MAC or PC the requirements are Postscript, GDI (it's called something different on a MAC) and ICC compliance for technology and a properly lit color balanced work environment. Unfortunately, you will have to spend some money, U.S dollars, a minimum of $1,500+ for a display, a minimum of about $1,500 for a PC desktop or about $2,000 for a MAC, a minimum of about $250 for a display calibration device, about $6,000 for a color calibration system that does display and print if desired. My work environment was another $8,000, for paint, 5,000 Kelvin lighting and dense window treatments.
Any software that meets the core technology compliance will work, Photoshop, GIMP, PaintShop Pro, Photo-PAINT, a host of RAW converters and other image editors as long as they are not web based. Preferably applications that allow a medium gray or slightly lighter workspace, about sRGB 125 across the board and has an easy to use color management process.
With all that said printing to an 8 color archival quality ink jet that has a proper gray balanced media profile using archival gloss, matte or canvas, an Adobe RGB image will print to that device and remarkably look like your display, I've done it for a living for decades.
Unfortunately a very huge amount of images (95% or more) fail. I constantly hear " that image on your display doesn't look like that on my display", I being of poor people skills, say of course not, I have an $8,000 calibrated work station, a light controlled work environment and $85,000 calibrated output device. You have an inexpensive non color calibrated (MAC or PC) and you work in a bat cave using a black work space in your application.
Fortunately for me my clients are almost exclusively architectural firms bringing me images and they understand the quality problem of the images that they bring me. Also after more than 4 decades I can pick who I work for and at 67 years old I'm now semi-retired.
Hello Peter, do I understand correctly that you use a grey card for determining settings (aperture/shutter/iso) vs AWB? I was thought that the grey card was used for AWB. I am aware that AV priority or Shutter priority will darken light background and lighten dark background. But using the grey card the way you do is novel to me. Best regards. Roger
A good photographer like you will take great photos with any camera but if you don't know how to work with a certain photo editor it makes your job quite difficult.If I saw these photos on the Net I would never say they where yours,the editing is completely different,you would have to spend a lot of time on this editor to achieve the same look.

The expensive gear work for some specific shootings, mostly comercial no doubt. Over here i use a pro-10 pack sometimes and fells like driving a sport car, nice and efective every time.
When use a DRSL camera I only work with monolights.
I was wondering if you can do a second part of this video using flash to show how to handle the metering with different size sensors.
Im just starting with medium format with and old hasselblad and a brand new fujifilm GFX 100 and your videos help me to understand how to handle the light and the lenses for achieving diferent looks.

Hi Miguel, thank you so much, I really appreciate it and am glad you've been enjoying the videos. Yes definitely you need higher quality gear for commerical work, but I wanted to show for beginners or amateurs it's still possible to take great photos without all that.

While I get what you're saying, and your intent, it's the chemistry between photographer and model that gets the results... if the model thinks the photographer is a creep, she's not going to be in it for the win, sort of speak... I'm sure Bec and Rara can elaborate more on that...
It is a little harder to work with a camera and software you are not used to ?
Love CaptureOne Pro 20 For full tethering. There only 2 True tethering software applications CaptureOne and Phocus.
So, yeah, I agree that photography is about seeing and capturing the light to make an image that gets the job done. BUT, what all these shows that say "it's not about the gear...." seem to miss is this: The gear your using MUST be capable of getting the capture that you're after. For example, the stuff I've shot of eagles at the Conowingo dam would never be able to be captured on an iPhone. Nor would the low key shots of bikes and cars that I do. Yeah, it's not really about the gear, but the gear is an undeniable part of the equation.
Of course, there are going to be exceptions for specialised fields of photography, and you're always going to need some gear no matter what.But the point I was trying make is that for amateurs or those just starting out, it's okay to not have the most expensive gear
@@PeterCoulsonPhotographer OH, yes, I get it, but I've run into so many at the camera club trying to get the shots of a 5DMK IV on an IPhone and wondering why it doesn't work. They've been told for years that "it's not about the gear".
I recall you can not get capture 1 to give you your look, so when tethering your Sony, what software are you using to be able to have images pop up on the monitor and allow you to change exp, curves etc
Generally I don't tether my Sony, but I just finished doing a tutorial tethering it with Capture One - I found it very slow, but at least I got the files into the computer and then I got my look in ACR & Photoshop

First thing I turned off in C1 and LR (where it is even worse) is sharpening.
I don't understand why they do it by default.
We can figure that out ourselves,.
I even wonder whether it has more of a Marketing usage than Photographic usage, like (out of the box) look how sharp we make your image.
BTW you should update your C1, that is a rather old version (in software age ;-)
Interesting, I agree on the RGB filter slider and will again ask the C1 development team.
Underlying message is, invest in good or at least, decent lenses, camera's are second.

Agreed, I hate sharpening. That's be great if you spoke to them about the sliders, but I'm not gunna spend heaps of money upgrading my C1, this was the first time ive used it in 10 years lol :)

@@PeterCoulsonPhotographer I do like using Capture One Pro for tethering with my Fuji cameras ; it's come a long way in the last few years. But I'll be damned if I can replicate the "chrome" look straight out of camera that you, and I, both like for monochrome images. I can get there in post, but that means more time wasted on editing.
@@djsuth7727 Try NIK's Silver Efex pro ( part of the NIK suite) as Plugin for LR and PS (use PS - LR sux) using it for ages, output sharpener is very good too.
Now NIK used to be free for a couple of years around 2016, that version is stil available if you google around.

I know you shoot mainly Broncolor but a lot of your videos show your Profoto D2's. For most of your 1-, 2- and 3- light fashion portraiture and editorial setups, are you using the 500 ws or 1000 ws strobes? I'm waffling. Do a mix of studio and on-location work. Just curious.

Thans heaps, I prefer mirrorless because it has highlight alerts and focusing peaking which makes my job easier, and I can see my finshed picture in the viewfinder

I also can't tether my Sony a9 to my PC. I don't think it's an osx problem
My expensive gear makes my workflow faster and much more efficient but in no way makes my pictures better.
You can use an axe or a chain saw to chop down a tree. End result is the same, one tool was more efficient depending the type of tree.

Their idea of cheap is put of reach of the average person. Cheap is, a £250 camera with a kit lens.
this is relative if you compare it to what canon lenses cost. a 6500 with the lense he uses is very cheap compared to canon
I watched a video by a guy called Sean tucker who was showing how to use inexpensive gear (legitimately inexpensive) and I was able to get the stuff he used from Amazon and my portraits improved immediately. Look up Sean Tucker one speed light. Thank me later

This was my first time using C1 in about 10 years so I'm not going to spend money upgrading it, and what I have read is that it is still the same engine which is not producing the look I want so I won't be using it :)

I watched this entire video and basically the model is making the image. Oh and 1000 or more for a lens I would not exactly call cheap. 1000 or more for a lens are really good already. Literally impossible to make a ugly image when someone has that good a skin/makeup. Oh and most people use a lens that costs 200-300 or less.
As someone who has been a professional for 20+ years I’m over the idea that gear makes a huge difference. It can make your life easier and maybe give you more options. But (here’s my but) I think having a professional model in front of you all the time makes a huge difference. Not trying to bust your chops about that. But I see new photographers shooting with models thinking they’re awesome and they never learn how to direct or make average people look good. I encourage new shooters to shoot people they know who aren’t models. Personally I’ve shot portraits for years and just recently I’ve been shooting more models. It frees me to concentrate on other things not having to work with a non model. So I get it. For me, it would be more interesting to see you shoot a non model or a very new model who needs more help.
Thanks Jeff, I do shoot a range of people but for filming it's hard to find an everyday person/ non model that is comfortable to have multiple cameras on them filming while on a shoot. Same with very new models, I find they prefer to have a little eyes on them as possible.

Yes, I take photos of everyone. For the purpose of a RUclips tutorial though, it's easier having a professional model, 'normal' people wouldn't be very comfortable having a bunch of cameras on them.

Funny tittle. Looks like it is an idea for shoot. With this tittle you would expect heavy talk on how gear doesn't matter but funniest part is that it is like mood board sentence for inspiration or a direction of shoot :D . And it means that cheap lighting - window. No expensive gear - reflectors, 50mm 1.8 lens. You made a joke from this time of videos by making mood with this idea: gear doesn't matter.
