In Ethiopia you can find the most dark skinned and light skinned Africans and everything in between. Thanks for making this video. Can't wait to watch the series. :)
Love this! She really broke down the difference between the stereotype vs the reality of _autochthonous_ African women on the African continent. People don't realize just how diverse women of African descent are _within_ the African continent itself. African women were the first _modern_ human beings and have had _over_ 200,000 years to be genetically and biologically diverse. Some autochthonous Africans also have blue eyes and blond hair b/c "blondism" is really just a form of _albinism._ Other human populations have been here for less than 60,000 years of human history and they came from A FEW SMALL GROUPS that only comprised a few hundred people - _total_ - that left Africa and went on to populate the rest of the globe. Cultural continuity _and_ diversity exists within the African continent _at the same time._ There is more genetic diversity in the women of Africa than anywhere else and that's why every single genotype and phenotype found in _other_ human populations is found _in the WOMEN of AFRICA._ The history of humanity itself is largely the history of the women of Africa.
+veronicajade20 Yet many belittle Africans, especially the women, and try to make us feel less than human. How sad! They don't realize when they belittle us, they are belittling themselves:(
Sally G "They don't realize when they belittle us, they are belittling themselves" They're insecure liars who've been fabricating "facts" about the ancient peoples and civilizations of humanity for so long that some of them even have the audacity to believe their own lies. It's bad enough to lie, but it's worse to _actually_ believe your own stupid lies. It's pathetic.
So true. Some are so close-minded they can't see beyond what is in front of them and see the big picture and its implication. Just to share, the other day I was having an argument with this person on youtube (s/he removed his/her comments or something - it's not there anymore) and this person had the audacity to say "no one likes black women" because they are not considered beautiful.
I LOVE THIS! and thank you so much for pointing out how people only think of poverty when they hear ethiopia, when there's SO MUCH MORE. And thank you for also talking about how ethiopian women are always referred to as "light-skinned" with "striaght hair" and "straight noses" -- like the most caucasian african country, as if we're not really african. Well in reality, we are the FIRST africans, and you cannot get any more african than us! And not all ethiopians fit that stereotype -- my hair sure doesn't look like the stereotypical straight ethiopian hair! THANK YOU AGAIN OMGG
No one actually thinks Ethiopians have straight hair it's just the trend to straighten your hair now. And people come in all colours really. Very unique and beautiful diversity in Ethiopia.
+lilypippili Well it's because Ethiopians are more Semitic. They look different from the rest of Africa. It's a unique country. They do have lighter skin than most Africans. Look at the model! She has light skin!
ferretyluv but there are so many different parts of ethiopia... my dad's skin is way darker than hers and he is 100% ethiopian. please don't generalize, and please don't let that one tiny characteristic define a whole country
+kryssy46 Why? Nicki Minaj made me believe that in random days women in Port of Spain come out from housing complex using carnival bikinis and gather in downtown square ;)
So glad to see that the approach is based on the understanding that Africa is incredibly diverse. So many times people refer to Africa as though its one homogeneous country when in fact it's a continent made up of many countries of wide stretching diversities. So many points were touched on here. Very well done!
Ok, time to point out some historical inaccuracies - the battle of Adwa was not a fight for independence. To fight for independence , first that country has to be colonized or be under the yoke of oppression of foreign power. In the battle of Adwa, the Ethiopian Empire defeated and repelled an aggressor european country, that has no business being there. Also that picture of Empress Tayitu is from 1870's or 1880's not 1910's. Also @1:10 minutes there was a mentioning of Empress Menen as being wife of Emperor Menielik. That would be incorrect, she was wife of Emperor Haileselassie. It was Taitu that was Emperor Menielik's wife. The third woman on the Motor cycle was just a propaganda picture taken by a visitor from Europe. Also, for your 1980's look the lady that inspired the style presented was Yeharerwerk Gashaw. She was the first Ethiopian international model. She was a Pan-Africanist and an Activist who did her part to put Ethiopia and Africa in general in good light. She could be googled well.
I love the research video follow up more than the 100 heats videos themselves! it's so great to unpack the historical context behind fashion, otherwise, every decade is just vaguely the same internationally. but looking closer, economically, it's all so dependent on social, cultural, economic, religious, political climates.
I really need to (re-)watch the other "Research Behind the Looks" video, as they are so informative and the stories behind each look and why they were chosen are interesting :) I really enjoy these videos!
to add Ethiopia was occupied by Italy for 5 years not colonized they fought and won a battle against Italy one of the most powerful nations the world at that time and paved a way and inspired other countries to their independence
Awesome video, as always! : ) Both research and the main video. It's always great to see how did you choose the looks and what was the influence. Can't wait to see what other hairstyles are there to be done with natural curly hair - without straightening them in western fashion.
Thank you for this video! This was beyond informative and educational!! Can't wait to see other African countries.and showcasing the endless diversity across the continent!
I had no idea that there were videos talking about the research that went on behind the scenes! These are great; I love to get insight into their processes. Thanks!
love video, we Jamaican say: love our African Empress Princess women, many reggea music praise beauty of African woman, so many Ethiopian words for beauty of women-kondjo, kwenedjadjet, wub, mona, amare n loga-tall dark slim n beautyful, glad u started in Ethiopia.
Amazing !I love the way she breaks down the beauty of our African women! But Menen is the wife of Haile Selassie not Menelik.lol Great video please continue and post more in true future.
do a video with all these countries compared side by side for each year. I see a lot of similarity between all of them for the 80's and 2010's. -> media influence?
But you missed greatly the two influential Ethiopian legendary singer's hair styles. Their hair styles still is widely known even among young boys to this days. Magical hair style. These are No1.Artsist Bzunesh Bekele's hair style in 1950s and 60s. and No2.Artsist Kuku Sebsbie's hair style in 1980's.The models that you have mentioned are hardly known.
I love love love the fact that the earlier part of the 20th century wasn't influenced that much by western culture. It really lets the individual style and flair of the country come through so brightly.
I love how a majority of the looks are based off of political and powerful women, pop culture has influence in style, but seeing real women reflected is supper important!
I would really love to see 100 Years of Beauty Japan's edition.. I think it'll be interesting transition between period when geisha looking make up (full white make-up and tiny red lip) and the way their hair pile up using some kind of ornate stick to the modern look influenced by western >.
Tunisians were never black. We were first berber, phoenician, roman, byzantine, arab, spanish, ottoman, french without forgetting the Italian influence.

The model and the researcher are both really gorgeous.
Oh yeah!
+Gavin Cubillo Yeah, the researcher is pretty, she should be featured in a video. But I don't know where she's from.
***** Thanks for the information! :)
+Gavin Cubillo Yes, with the same amount of care and attention the models get , she would not look out of place representing her own ancestors.
Gavin Cubillo the model especially
Ethiopian women are very beautiful. They seem to have very specific features that differentiate them from everyone else in the world.
