  • Let's talk about plants! Today RSM interviews her kalanchoe called the Mother of Thousands. It's an amazing little succulent with a nifty trick up its sleeve (leaf?). Learn all about plants and practical care on this channel - Real Simple Mama.
    Note: Kalanchoe are succulents which as a rule are toxic to pets to be careful before bringing any new plant into your home or yard. (Thanks Evelyn for reminding me to check!)

    I just received 3 new blooming ones, a red, a white and a pink. I'm so excited to be able to share my new plants with friends and family now that I know what to look for, thank you for sharing your wisdom❤

      Yay! I give away a pot full of pups and I have more as soon as I turn around. Just remember that they’re poisonous to dogs and they’re technically a succulent so they really don’t like a lot of water. And have fun!

    Wow, yours looks so healthy! Mine is leggy... and I had a pest problem so I sprayed some neem solution on the leaves. Now they are wrinkly and have miscolored/ burned foliage. Can I prune those leaves off? WIll it grow new ones in that place? Thanks again for your informative video.

    • @realsimplemama
      @realsimplemama  3 года назад +1

      Oh no! I’m sorry. Mine have gotten a bit leggy in the winter (less sun). It will eventually continue to grow leaves, though I am not sure if it would do it in that same place. But the leaves that are damaged will always look damaged, if that makes sense - the plant cannot heal that one particular leaf if it has browned. So either it will drop those leaves eventually on its own or you are welcome to prune them off :-)

    This is an invasive species so be careful planting it out giving it away. I got some from a friend and have been giving away the babies. My cousin informed me and now I’m super careful with the dirt when I repot.

      @@realsimplemama wow. I didn't know they got that big my mama is small. The lady that gave it to me moved away and couldn't take all her plants she gave me this one. She mentioned that she would make a tea out of it to help with inflammation something like that. But I heard it's poisonous so I don't know how true that was. So far I just have it there for decorating my house.

      They’re interesting and easy to care for. If you don’t have people or animals putting them in their mouth, there’s no danger! But to each their own. I don’t have mine in reach of my dogs (though they aren’t interested in my plants anyway) and I don’t have young kids anymore. 🌱☀️❤️

    Hi, ok my mom just gave me her plant that is almost DEAD! The leaves are a crispy😪 I need help to resuscitate it please. What kind of soil do you use?

    • @realsimplemama
      @realsimplemama  2 года назад

      Hi! Oh no I’m so sorry. They like a succulent soil which has pumice and sand in it. If you don’t have that (or don’t want to pay for it), there are also guides online on how to make your own, using regular potting soil and some sand. You would mix it all up before you plant the plant in it so it is easier to mix up.
      I like to water mine really deeply about once a week, remember that the leaves which have already been damaged will not repair themselves but to start looking for new growth at the base of the plant over the next few weeks. Good luck! 🍀🤞🏼

    I have had one of these the past few months that I purchased as a baby on Etsy. It's growling new leaves and babies, but isn't growing "around," only side to side. I have never been able to grow plants but this thing is growing! I repotted it in cactus soil and use cactus food when I water it every 3-4 weeks. I'm in San Antonio and it's not as hot out now so may be doing that less frequently. My question is my leaves look darker than yours. Is there a reason for that? I try to give it 10 hours of sunlight out on the balcony every day and then bring it in every night.

      They should grow! I try to move mine to new pots within a day or two of dropping off before they really root. But some of my earlier pups are in the same pot as the mother, so I’ll eventually repot them.

    • @realsimplemama
      @realsimplemama  2 года назад

      Put her outside - don’t let her get fried by too much sun but let her dry out. Or even better, try to repot her with dry succulent dirt. She will probably love but those particular leaves will die. Give her time! I bet she’ll be ok.

    Hi...my mother of a thousand leaves at the bottom look like they are rotting can I just cut them off?

    • @realsimplemama
      @realsimplemama  3 года назад +1

      Mine do do that too! Usually with succulents the leaves on the bottom will fall off every once in a while either because those are the oldest leaves, or because you were watering a little bit too much. I think though with the mother of thousands, that leaf falls off so that it could be protection or food for the new babies. So it is up to you if you would like to leave it and let her take care of it naturally, or if you want to remove it.
