I have a pink Butterfly plant and the babies that fall off grow super fast . Just scatter them on soil and give them plenty of sun and watch them grow .

I think I will plant these outside this summer. In Ohio, they can't live through winter unless I bring them inside so maybe we will have our pick of the litter by then!

I have a "Pink Lavenedar" version of this plant. It too has pinkish babies, the mother has pink variation in the leaves. I have propergated these by topping the tops. I read and successfully tried burying the leaves that need removing to root the cuttings. I simply burrined the leaves so the ends where the baby plantlets are just at the surface of the solid. The stem end of the leaf can be totally buried or just laying on the soil too. The leaf it's self won't grow roots but the plantlets should. Even when they have some roots the plantlets are slow to grow, and seem to grow in spurts. I have several 1" with leaves in and each have 3-6 plantlets on the tips and most of them are growing.

Great idea to bury the leaves. You are going to have a lot of those plants.

Hi Kim, I love kalanchoe! I also pronounce it the same way and have heard that both pronunciations are accepted. The little babies are sooo cute! I tend to pop them off manually (can't help myself) and group the babies together in a small pot. Needless to say, when they grow and are still small, they are adorable! I agree with you, for your 'pink butterflies', some of the babies may yet survive if they have enough areas of variegation that can photosynthesize well. It may be worth seeing if some of them will root and grow just to see how accurate that plant tag is. Thank you for taking the time to post this video!

Thanks Ashley for watching. I appreciate it so much. I want to allow those babies the opportunity to grow if they will. They are cute as variegated plants and the pink is great. I need more pink. Guess there is an experiment brewing.

Hi Kim, A couple questions for you.
    - When pruning or trimming back a leggy mother of thousands, i should wait for the ends to callas over correct?
    - should they go directly into dirt after that or should they be dipped in some sort of rooting solution and put into a cup of water to grow roots then into dirt?
-I live in an apartment with west facing windows, the leaves are curling is this a sign of not enough sun?
Thankyou and happy gardening! Cheers. :)

I think it is a case of letting them callous or not, depending on your time. With those, if I am planting that moment and I have sat down to do it, I just pop them straight in to soil. ( I know I have some film of that but I don't think it has ever been published yet.) That plant grows so easily, we just broke a tall sprout about 12 inches long into 3 pieces, stuck them in the soil of the pot, now all of them are 12 inches long just over the last few months of summer. That plant grows fast! Thanks for watching and commenting.

    • @KimsGardensandHome

There are so many babies that they end up all over. Most times I sweep them up and just throw them away. These things make babies so quickly! I need to do a new video on her/him. She is kinda pretty right now, but just in the top.

You can sell them online. These cost a pretty penny. Also the mother plant dies after it propogates. Mine died 2 months after all the little babies. I thought something was wrong but come to find out they die after the propogate.

Sorry to be so late to respond- I think that there is a lot of inter-species hybridization between these types of plants. Look up Kalanchoe laetivirens for an explanation of the greener, larger leaved variety. The ‘Pink Butterflies’ plant is a hybrid between Kalanchoe delagoensis and K. daigremontiana, also known as Kalanchoe houghtonii- Pink Butterflies or K. x Houghtonii- Pink Butterflies.

The broad leaf plant is called Mother of Thousands. The narrow leaf plant is Mother of Millions, and her babies grow on the end of the plant. This is the difference in the two plants.

Hi! I have the broader leafed one. Should I be removing the pups? The leaves have started to true brown/yellow on mine and I have no idea why! They have adequate light and do think I have been over watering

    • @KimsGardensandHome
      @KimsGardensandHome  4 года назад

If you do mean you have been overwatering, (not just a typo), that could be the cause. I just let the babies fall and they root where ever they can get a bit of root into the soil. Hope that helps.

These are both mother of thousands, though? Mother of millions has double paired leaves at each node, while mother of thousands alternates leaf pairs at 90° so there's 2 leaves per "level" rather than the 4 on a mother of millions. Mother of millions also send their new growths to the tips of their slender leaves while mother of thousands send new growths down the entire lengths of leaves that tend to be more teardrop shaped even when they're thin. After many years of caring for many varieties of mother of thousands plants ive gotten quite good at spotting the fraud mother of millions amongst the mother of thousands I have Lmao

@@ShutterShadeChicka I actually just found and rescued a patch of them about 4 years ago. I have done SO Much Research looking for MY variations!?! Do you have some sort of platform? Possibly? I’d love to see your various Mother of Millions/Thousands and I am ALWAYS more than happy to learn something new from someone who has more experience with this South African plant. lol I honestly dunno how they wound up here unless there was an extremely stopped up bird that flew over Cali after making a trip to Madagascar? Giggles 😁🤷🏻‍♀️👀 now I literally have TOO many! Haha & I have the tall guy. And the short stalky one. I would also love to show you where I got my information so we might be able to adjust/correct said misinformation. Thanks for the comment! Peace and love

@@ShutterShadeChicka my nodes come in quads (4s) on the tall one? The short stay guy has nodules all the way down/up EVERY leaf. Depending upon size and age of plant there could be 40 nodules on 1 of these leaves. Correct me if I’m wrong? But that IS the Mother of Millions? I’ve got some blooming now. 🥰💫

    • @KimsGardensandHome

If the leaves are squishy, it may have too much water. They do need to be very dry once brought inside. Try to see if too wet. Maybe replant in dry soil?
