Born: 1938. Designated Living National Treasure in 2002.
Head of the Hozan-kai Shakuhachi Guild, performer, teacher, composer and pioneer in expanding the possibilities of the shakuhachi, Yamamoto Hozan attended the Seiha Music College graduating in 1962. After formation with Reibo Aoki and Katsuya Yokoyama of the widely acclaimed "Shakuhachi Sanbon Kai" trio in 1966, he electrified the conservative traditional scene by applying his talents to a variety of crossover collaborations beginning with the jazz idiom in 1967. These have led him to work with such world renowned musicians as Ravi Shankar, Jean Pierre Rampal, Tony Scott and Gary Peacock. Through the seventies and eighties to the present he has led the shakuhachi world receiving innumerable honors, including Ministry of Cultural Affairs and Education Ministerial awards for his performances, recordings (numbering in the hundreds) and compositions. He currently serves as lecturer at The Tokyo University of Fine Arts and Music.
Incredibly beautiful. What a cultural encounter! He brings all the solitude, beauty, hours of meditation from the japanese monestaries into this wonderful jazz standard. Two cultures really wanting to share, to give to each other. Just think of how Coltrane, one of the greatest of the era when this was written, learned from Eastern cultures...
Amazing! To play this song requires mastering one of the most the difficult techniques: the meri = partial covering of the holes for notes in between the 5 main ones, D, F, G, A, C. Covering just a bit too little or too much and not softening your breath enough, the meri note will be out of tune or worst muted. The last hole can produce 3 tones: D (full cover & strong breath), D# (tiny gap & soft breath), & E (1/2 cover & medium breath). Quickly shifting between main & meri notes is very hard..
Thanks for the info
You seem to know a lot. I wish you all the best in life.
Actually too true, on point, Mr. Hozan is a true master, pulling this piece out in such a flawless way
me watching the video was like "is he playing althis on a 5 hole shakuhachi ? ... it looks like ... holly crap he does but how ? ..."" reading your comment "" ...oh .. this is superhuman" !!!
@@istvankardos8440 A long lifetime of practice plus you can do a ton with one of those with partial-holing and bending notes at the mouthpiece. It is MUCH more flexible than the silver flute you played in high school.
Totaly incredible level of playing the instrument! A person who has reached this level of skill has the right to play what he wants and how he wants!
As a novice, budding shakuhachi player, I can assure you that to play something like this on a shakuhachi is astounding, to say the least. Extremely difficult instrument to even get a (pleasing) sound from.
what an inspiring performance by the legend. may he rest in peace
Absolutely MAGNIFICENT!!!!
Wonderful collaboration !!
Salute. Bravo !

R.I.P
@jdswiney Have you ever tried to play the shakuhachi? What the man is doing is incredible!
No doubt.
Swell!

I play shakuhachi for 2 years. It is intrinsically difficult for a shakuhachi to play in jazz way...since it's not designed that way. You you can play only 5 notes in an octave with only finger move. To cover 12 notes you need to lower head to help. Hozan has incredible mastery. But I do prefer shakuhachi playing in intended way... You can argue that there are no limitation for any instrument. However I think there are certain way in which shakuhachi presents more potential space and power. Playing jazz like this, shakuhachi is kind of trapped.
In the end, it's always about the person, not the instrument.
(The music is much new for the appearance.)
"newer" was correct ?
"Modern"

Sorry but I prefer the shakuhachi played as was initially intended.
You and all of us have come to this day thanks to change
In a Confucian context In a Buddhist context
"As originally intended" would mean as Chinese tradition (from the state of 吳) intended.
He could use a little practice.
Personally I think he did great
