Crazy how he writes so many songs that my heart already knows. It’s like a soundtrack to a very painful time in my life. I still miss you Gabby. I see you in our daughter’s eyes, I touch your hair when I brush her hair, and I hear your I love you’s when she speaks to me. Again I miss you...forever
I know you commented this 10 years ago. But yes, that instantly became one of my favorite lines in any song. It sounds like it should come across as cheesy but it captures such a deep truth about the little things we love in the people we love. Bittersweet.
i haven't cried for a long time.. sometimes you just need to cry, but nothing triggers it. this did it for me.. I'm not surprised though.. adam is THE poet
Makes me wish that more people appreciated the subtle art that creating music is, the lyrics, the emotion, the way the melody has to harmonize with that emotion... the quality in a voice that sings with conviction, or the way a note played by someone feeling a song just hits you differently, almost a symphonic experience seeing them play live. Thank you for resonating with all of us....
Adam touches me in every song he writes. How lucky to have such a gifted person share his thoughts and experiences with us. The best thing is he feels it through his entire being when he sings, so depending upon his take on the song that day it changes with him.
Possibly one of the most poetic songs on the planet from modern music. The piano weeps in every stroke of its keys as the pain resonates in Adams voice! If there were just one song left on earth, I'd hope this was it! Thank you Adam for putting to music what I searched my life to just say! I just wish, she'd come back to me.
This song hits anyone that has lived in amsterdam... It touches your heart... However... Love stories are amazing but short lived in Amsterdam... !!! Enjoy every moment ❤
Heres how it went down- Discover Colorblind- omg, this is amazing. They're gunna have a hard time matching this one. Discover Raining in Baltimore- omg, this is amazing! there gunna have a hard time matching this and colorblind dicover this- well, u get it. Keep reelin' out the hits, guys. you never cease to amaze me.
Lyrics : A picture of Amsterdam Bare trees under glass Framed in the gray and white afternoon light Of a winter long past When I was a raiser To Dublin I'd roam She was a bareback rider Some miles from home Come back to me She's a carnival diver Hung in the sky Cutting through time like a memory Strung on a wire The color of anything Fades in the air But she is the film of a book of the story Of the smell of her hair Come back to me When every thing's over And every thing's clear When everyone's older And no one is here I try to remember A girl on a wire Tumbling and diving above Stephen's Green Like a kite on the air Come back to me
I wouldn't be surprised if this song was about Gemma Hayes. For starters, she's from Ireland, to which there are obvious references (Dublin, Stevens Greens). It's also similar in nature to Hazy (Hayes-y) which they wrote together and Adam sang live in 2003... In that song Adam kept crying out -- "Could you tell me why you're leaving?" Interesting thing is, Gemma had just left their tour 2 days earlier. Guess where they were at that time? Yup... Amsterdam! The day was Tuesday, Feb 4 2003 :)
Feb. 4th..that date..seems to be a meeting and or ending date.strange as it is..this song will always hold deep memories for different reasons. it's haunting and beautiful..and at the same time alive with feeling and tones of sadness. that shows true brilliance.
The last time I saw the last great love of my life was on Saint Stephen's Green in Dublin. I'd forgotten Adam references it in this song. So gorgeous, so heartbreaking.
I must say, that was also the first thing I thought about, when hearing this song. There is a version of this song on youtube it's calles tuesday in Amsterdam (Rotterdam Live) where he played this song the first time and said he just wrote it yesterday. And in another live performance he said this song is written when a girl just left. Great to link al those bits :-)
Sorry about that, but I must say Adam's voice is a lot richer in nuances and more expressive in the later kind of songs/register. If he only wrote songs like that Shrek tune you mention, the band/man would be just ok, but not memorable..
The sadder songs of his always grab me much more than any happy songs the crows do. We don't need someone with us when we feel happy, but when you're down, knowing you're not alone can help. That's what they've always done for me.
I do agree. Even if I'm not whishing to imply people who like their uplifting side better have a lesser taste, what makes him and the band take a part in my life are songs like "Colorblind", as well as most of their first album. Could mention later songs like "Goodnight L.A.", and, well, many more along those lines. As a matter of fact, is only natural they get deeper, since Duritz has gone through psychologically though times during much of all these years. That's why the "happy" part was only a therapeutic trick, while the reflective side showed the true side, and hence, the gifted and heartfelt body of his/their work. Sorry for this all this bore, and maybe for my English, as a native Spanish speaker ;-)
@Koennie78 I always took it as he was remembering all of this and feeling it on a Tuesday morning in Amsterdam. In "Perfect Blue Buildings" he sings "4:30 am on a Tuesday, I don't get much worse than this"... Relatible? Maybe. I love the fact that his song share tidbits like this so we can try to link them together. It is part of what makes his song writing so brilliant to myself...
So I have this womb theory. That when things get terrible, I only want to be in the bathtub, with songs like this, covered up if I have to. Life is so hard sometimes.
I don't know how many girls have fucked over Adam Duritz throughout the course of his life, but, i've gotta say, I hope they continue to, cos it seems to bring the best songs out of him. Raining in Baltimore, A Long December, I wish I was A Girl and now this, which is up there with all those. He seems like one of those guys who writes best when he's pining/pissed off/wronged. Fantastic song.
can't get enough of this song. i only don't get it why it's called "on a tuesday in Amsterdam..." when he's mentioning Dublin and Stephens Green. that's Not in Amsterdam Adam!!! But i don't care coz i love Dublin more then Amsterdam
if only they did this with a stairway effect... had the drums and guitars kick in around 3:00 or something, a surprise slow cooker then a fade up into a beat...
Ok, here's my point: on Mondays, my body and mind are getting adjusted to the regular routine of the week; plus where some people seem to see hopelessness, I see opportunities and even some optimism. Unfortunately, by (the end of, usually) Tuesday a lot of that "goes out the window" due to other people, mostly. I'm imagining that A. Duritz looks at the week in a similar fashion.
I love Adam's tone, but he seems kind of whiny in this one. Most of the time I like the sorrowful emotion he attaches through his voice, but I think its a little much in this one. But thats just my opinion.
Crazy how he writes so many songs that my heart already knows. It’s like a soundtrack to a very painful time in my life.
I still miss you Gabby. I see you in our daughter’s eyes, I touch your hair when I brush her hair, and I hear your I love you’s when she speaks to me.

Adam Duritz is the greatest sniper songwriter. Always bullseye, always straight in my soul. Bullseye.
"She is the film of the book of the story, of the smell of her hair."
Exquisite.

It sounds like it should come across as cheesy but it captures such a deep truth about the little things we love in the people we love. Bittersweet.
My favorite phrase ever.
"When everything's over,
Everything's Clear.
When everyone's older,
No one is here."
This rings so true to life as I know it.
Me to my friend me too
That ending crescendo of "Come back to me" breaks my heart. Painfully lovely
Indeed. One of only 3 or 4 songs that can make me tear up.
adam duritz is the whole sense of a good song writer. counting crows is by far one of the best bands out there. i can feel their heart
This song (and every other CC song) is fiilled with such beautiful lyrics and music.
Damn..
i haven't cried for a long time.. sometimes you just need to cry, but nothing triggers it. this did it for me.. I'm not surprised though.. adam is THE poet

Such a phenom. Adam is a thinker's dream.
Adam touches me in every song he writes. How lucky to have such a gifted person share his thoughts and experiences with us. The best thing is he feels it through his entire being when he sings, so depending upon his take on the song that day it changes with him.
Kristen Gilbert his music has guided me for years
Wow... he's done it again. Beautiful and soulful....
I am stunned by the passion and emotion in this song. Wow...
The most beautiful lyrics ever.
FANTASTIC! A true artist... Thank you Adam.

I come back to this often simply because it is so beautiful.....

SPLENDIDA BRAVO ADAM
Unglaublich dieses feeling. Adam Duritz... du bist mein Gott!
Lyrics :
A picture of Amsterdam
Bare trees under glass
Framed in the gray and white afternoon light
Of a winter long past
When I was a raiser
To Dublin I'd roam
She was a bareback rider
Some miles from home
Come back to me
She's a carnival diver
Hung in the sky
Cutting through time like a memory
Strung on a wire
The color of anything
Fades in the air
But she is the film of a book of the story
Of the smell of her hair
Come back to me
When every thing's over
And every thing's clear
When everyone's older
And no one is here
I try to remember
A girl on a wire
Tumbling and diving above Stephen's Green
Like a kite on the air
Come back to me
Lost my friend Ally ay 29, this song hits hard, wow, she is always here. Always
Precious
I love this....thanks, joanie
Gorgeous song and sad at the same time.
That is awesome that you found that link... just, amazing!
Adam fascinates me. Great song.
A lot of emotions there! I love this song :)

Ohhhh how i love this song!

Beautiful!
still glide above the grey mist
Cutting through time like a memory...
"When everything's over
Everything's clear

I'm sure Christy forgives you!

Joseph D Taylor dedicated this song to his angel Rhoda they just love each other so much
Counting Crows. Covering all my moods. Within the space of a two a girl sent me from Accidentally In Love to this.

so poetic
Holey Moley.....powerfully understated

Tubby? Tubby? Grrr! Nobody calls me tubby!

And I was there for a long December
my god...is there a better songwriter out there that's better than Adam? the Piano is amazing!
that's CHARLIE!
a picture on words ...
beautiful words in the colors of life
thats profound
jj dogg some days their are not enough words to express the feelings of this music.
So I have this womb theory. That when things get terrible, I only want to be in the bathtub, with songs like this, covered up if I have to. Life is so hard sometimes.
OMG!
People should listen to Counting Crows more often. Then MAYBE they'd learn something about music.
I don't know how many girls have fucked over Adam Duritz throughout the course of his life, but, i've gotta say, I hope they continue to, cos it seems to bring the best songs out of him. where did they go please make more
On a Tuesday in Amsterdam long ago
HOw does Adam know how I'm feeling????
so fucking good
@buddytyree your argument is valid indeed. perhaps they even thought such ideas through
Wow! Just when you thought Adam has writers block ..... WOW! Just goes to show the best songs don't make the radio.
I always wonder why a band doesn't have a song on their vevo when they clearly created a video.
@elena2717...Our song of the day
@maiertez yes even if at times he is pushing it to make sense :oP but yet, they work somehow lol...
@ Ben...You said a mouthful brother.
Dublin and Stephens green, is it not called Amsterdam
@MyNameIsJonas574 You're English was fine, no worries :) and you have a really great point.
COME BACK
i agree i cant stand how noone likes them i have debates on that all the time
can't get enough of this song. i only don't get it why it's called "on a tuesday in Amsterdam..." when he's mentioning Dublin and Stephens Green. that's Not in Amsterdam Adam!!! But i don't care coz i love Dublin more then Amsterdam
wtf, never saw this.. what's it from???
just a video they shot when practicing/recording for the album
@saint7211 thats exactly what i was thinking..
if only they did this with a stairway effect... had the drums and guitars kick in around 3:00 or something, a surprise slow cooker then a fade up into a beat...
wooow
i almost cry =^,-,`=
5***** and fav it
ok.bye bye.♂♂
@Koennie78 Picture of Amsterdam... bare trees under glass.
@tattoofthesun That's a somewhat trite way to end a song honestly. I think it's better the way it is.
I meet a dude online and he sends me this, does this mean my life suxs?
F.....Damn it..!! > Just image how pressure over the Piano Player, as long as, Adam is a F .....piano player..!!
Why do all the tuesday songs sound so much more depressing than the monday songs?! I am confuzzled.
I'm NOT. Tuesday has ALWAYS been a more depressing day to live through than Monday has.
@@jasonnstegall dude what Mondays are totally much more depressing. Plus tuesday has tacosss
Actually, I can get tacos every day but Thursday. But that's not the point.
@@jasonnstegall then uhh what's the point
Ok, here's my point: on Mondays, my body and mind are getting adjusted to the regular routine of the week; plus where some people seem to see hopelessness, I see opportunities and even some optimism.
