fav moment in whole song...when adam says august and everything after for the first chorus and the crowd realizes what song hes playing and flips out...amazing concert moment love it
You can hear the realization of what’s happening move through the crowd, especially at the very beginning and at 1:26 and it’s magical. No one had ever heard the song played before, but we’d all seen the lyrics on the cover since ‘93. What a moment.
Anyone suffering from depression should consider attending a Counting Crows show. For one hour and whatever minutes you really do forget about yourself, the world, and the crowd around you and just feel joy and awe. At least that's how its always been for me and I've seen them 6times and met Adam 3 of those times.
I'm more than blessed and fortunate. I got to hang with him in his parents basement with some friends and actually play 'Trivial Pursuit !' Then he proceeded to Wow us all, espescially the young ladies, with a few solo piano tunes. Talk about surreal !! Can't say enough about Adam and Dave and the band, and how they have managed to seemingly roll through the years without missing , I guess you can say a beat, but they are so different than anyone else ! Unique !
I actually really love the crowd in this. You can sense their enthusiasm at hearing this for the first time. Especially when he sings "August and Everything After" for the first time. They sound so excited and we all would be too.
Counting Crows, and this song, are absolutely incredible! The crowd noises don't bother me at all. They used to when I was young and impatient. But now I hear the exuberance and the joy of appreciation of an exquisite song and a talented group of musicians. I feel like I am there at the concert, stealing a "moment" with the band and the crowd. Yeah, that's what "Playhouse71" said in a post a month ago...immediacy and intimacy.
This song is absolutely amazing. It hits you very strongly with emotion. The lyrics are just outstanding. Its unbelievable that someone can write a song soooo well.
this is the best song like ever :D counting crows absolute legends n greatly underappreciated in ireland its horrible more people should know great music like this :)
I was a Counting Crows fan since the release of their first single. I remember this song always being talked about but nobody ever new anything about it. I was always afraid that if they ever played it or released it, it would be a let down and not nearly as good as I always hoped it would be. I'm just glad it turned out to be as great and powerful as the rest of their early work.
Sorry to necro-post. I realized this comment was from two years ago. This song was supposed to be on the album but the label (or someone from the company) thought it was too much of a downer and the decision was made to cut it, so the only recordings of the song that exist are live. Which actually makes it better IMO
I have all their albums. They are an amazing and wonderful band. I usually listen to Obituary and Napalm death, but when I put Counting Crows in, I seem to find my soul. Thank you for everything you guys have ever done.
Thanks so much for putting this up, chn3141. I have the album, but the song is mysteriously missing. I always wondered and now I know that wow, what a great song from a great band. Thanks, again.
Music keeps me alive, somedays it all I can do to have even the smallest desire to get out of bed. Counting crows I have always believed is a band given to much credit without being understood, they are an amazing band, but not for reasons people give them. The audience should be silent and taking in what adam is singing and trying to say, to me this song almost sounds like an apology to himself, but it is his song, and Adam Duritz is one of the most truthful songwriters I have ever heard,
I'm 11 years late to this comment but damn... perfect summary. Also I feel the exact same way.. I hope you are doing well out there. This band is STILL the first thing I reach for when grasping at life.. so many beautiful lyrics and it ALWAYS feels like home.
As much as I'd love to have a studio version of this, I think the rawness of the song would be lost. And the mysterious feeling about this song would just go away if it were just released to us. I like the idea of him just playing it spaced out between years once or twice then just releasing a studio version of it to us. I just feel the rawness and the emotion of the song could be lost in the studio. But thats just me. What a brilliant song.
I can't imagine ever growing tired of them....get your CC albums or tapes or CD's back out and listen again..maybe it will rekindle your love for them :)
'I said i'm sorry by now, at least once...to just about everyone. She says I've forgotten what i'm supposed to do today, and it slips my mind what i'm supposed to say.'
Unfortunately the answer to that is no. It was never recorded for a cd or album and if it was, it was kept locked dark in the CC vault. This was the first time they played it live and to the best of my knowledge, the only time. It was recorded by a fan and we're lucky to have this great quality. You can google CC bootlegs and lots of people are sharing. Good luck!
@doriangreyjr they did play it live once or twice before august came out.. BUT this is the only ever live recording. This was left off on purpose by the producer since Adam kept screwing it up. During a break Adam recorded Raining in Balitmore for Bonnie Rait, and the producer decided to put that song on the album instead, since this song was too long.
@wojtek0000 I was there and the yelling bothered me... but actually THAT part... when he said "it's midnight in San Francisco" and it really WAS midnight in San Francisco and I'd waited 10 years to hear that song... it was magical :-)
It wasn't lost, instead it was a conscious choice not to put the song on the album. And to not play the song in concert til that fateful day of 12/12/03 but it wasn't until someone asked him about lyrics that came from a demo tape on 11/18. He neither confirmed nor denied this claim till 12/08 someone gave him a copy of the demo. Four days later, the holy grail of Counting Crows had been revealed.
You can always download songs directly from RUclips using third-party software if need be. Also, I have another alternative version of this song played live if anyone wants it. He makes several mistakes, but I still enjoy it even more than this version. Better audio on the other version too. I love this song so very much.
@billyjoet99 I think you made this comment out of anger and disappointment that there is no studio version, and the live version was "ruined" by the crowd. I feel your pain man, but no reason to get hard on the crowd. They were enjoying the song, and it was CC's decision not to put the song on the album. As a fan, I respect the choice, and I'm going to appreciate whatever material they've given me when it comes to this song. I'm sure CC would have wanted the crowd to enjoy it too.
I'm not sure of the exact reason why they excluded the song from the album, but I have trouble believing it was because he couldn't get it in one take. At any rate, I find it interesting that the words to this song are scrawled across the background of the album cover for August and Everything After, but the song wasn't on there. It would be nice to hear a studio version but in another way it's kinda nice to have that strange twist to the album.
@runnersdialzero333 this is true.. i actually really want a studio version now lol. and no, i dont think he ever ended up getting a complete version.. on the new dvd he said that he kept trying to do it but he sucked at piano and there wasnt good editing then so he had to get it in one take and he couldnt do it.. so they ended up doing raining in baltimore instead
There is a recording of this song. I have it. I will upload it for you guys. I honestly don't know where I got it from but I didn't realise how rare it was when I heard people talking about it. I'll upload it now.
@behwal I was there and I was really disgusted at the crowd during this song, b/c I don't think most of them realized what was going on... but no one could sing along b/c this was the first time it was ever played :-) But yeah, I hear ya and agree. But during the rest of the night it was actually really amazing and everyone sang along with every other song

Anyone complaining about crowd noise in a live recording that hasn't been professional remixed from a soundboard recording doesn't get the point and the magic of bootlegs. I'd love to have a studio or remixed recording of the song, sure, but the crowd noise adds to the immediacy and intimacy of the setting and the performance. This is actually a pretty good, clear recording.

Holy Jesus, this performance is perfect.
I'm more than blessed and fortunate. I got to hang with him in his parents basement with some friends and actually play 'Trivial Pursuit !' my name is August my coach in P.E. told me to listen to this because evertime he says or hears my name he thinks of this song.

This song has changed my life.
Your voice Adam Duritz still gives me chills.....i have love your forever, and beyond. Thank you for all of your years of healing my life

My fav Counting Crows song, by fucking far.
No words to express...just a warm fuzzy feeling on the inside....
You Guys are the Most Honest Band I've Ever Heard. I Wish More Bands Were More Like You. You Guys are the BEST, and Should Deserve the BEST.
I have all their albums. They are an amazing and wonderful band. I usually listen to Obituary and Napalm death, but when I put Counting Crows in, I seem to find my soul. Thank you for everything you guys have ever done.
This album blew me away the very first time i heard it (1993) and still blows me away today (2008).
I noticed the lyrics on the cover, and wondered if it was a missing song or maybe just a poem. Now I know. Thanks for posting it.
Thanks so much for putting this up, chn3141. I have the album, but the song is mysteriously missing. I always wondered and now I know that wow, what a great song from a great band. Thanks, again.
My life is complete after hearing this with Adams voice
Love it
It's amazing how the screaming drunk crowd doesn't screw up Adam.
I always thought it was weird that the song the album was named for wasn't actually on the album. I'm so glad to hear it :)
In a word, masterpiece....

thank you so much for uploading this , it's just beautiful.
still one of the best albums i've heard...thanks to life for the artists !
'Thank You' '4' this 'Beautiful' 'Music' 'Lyrics'. 'I Love You Adam'. 'Your Darling and Queen'. XXX
I've just started to love Counting Crows.
This song was well worth the wait to finally hear... thanks for posting it!
This song is pretty much the only thing getting me through the miserable week I'm having.
2019, & this is the 1st time I have heard this, I’m gutted, and it’s a great track
what a beautiful song just put me in a great mood to hear the crows
it would have been a shame to die and never to have heard this album....thank god i discovered them at last

Pure poetry
This might be AD's finest song.
This is a beautiful song. wow
I can't imagine ever growing tired of them....get your CC albums or tapes or CD's back out and listen again..maybe it will rekindle your love for them :)
It's been 10years & that's fine if you love them, but surely it can't be for their music

take a bow Adam.pure class
This song is everything you want to say but don't know how.
This was in San Francisco. First time they ever played the song to the public.
Legendary song. Have they ever played it since then? This is the only version i've heard. Awesome song, awesome band.
Great song, great songwriter
fantastic song
awesome song

i love this recording... why? A lot of my friends are in the audience.. its funny to pick out their screams and cries.
Adam Duritz is a true poet. I wish I could manipulate words like he can
This song is available as a "live" version on an import hanginaround rock remix single from like 2004.
@billyjoet99 I think you made this comment out of anger and disappointment that there is no studio version, and the live version was "ruined" by the crowd. Anyone know what concert this is from?
goosebumps.
i'd really like to hear a studio version of this. too bad its not on any released CD's
Brilliant.
Crowd's really like to here the names of places.
Innocuous1 Crowds* hear*
Yeah Its on cd cause I brought a counting crows single (cant remember which one) but this song was on it.
yeah i heard the same version on hangin' around single, i assume it from san fransisco as when he mentions it the crowd cheers.
I was hoping they would put a studio recording off this on the re release of August. Too bad they didn't.
Absolutely beautiful. Wish they'd made a decent recording of it though. That's Adam for ya.
@countingcrows123 ah, i figured the two were kind of cut from the same cloth just based on how they sound. thanks for the info :)
Best ever ..
@billyjoet99 Don't blame the crowd. It's not their fault someone was recording from Within the crowd. Beautiful song though.
I really want to get this song on my mp3 but i cant find it anywhere but here . this suckssssssss
I'm not sure of the exact reason why they excluded the song from the album, but I have trouble believing it was because he couldn't get it in one take. Granted.
I so agree!
I think they didn't release this song because it is basically Bob Dylan's "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues" except slowed down with different lyrics.
to those of you who are getting annoyed by the crowd if you put 'August and Everything After' in youtube the second one down is a lot better quality
It was not at the Filmore, it was at the Warfield.
@acid43 I believe this song is available as a b-side on one of Counting Crows's single releases. Check amazon or google it on t he web my friend.
August 2020🕯
There is a recording of this song. I have it. I will upload it for you guys. I honestly don't know where I got it from but I didn't realise how rare it was when I heard people talking about it. I'll upload it now.
if you're trying to avoid love, then yes, love love love... fuckimg masterpiece...
@billyjoet99 I agree...it's the only version I can find. And it's my very favorite CC song! Damnit lol
@countingcrows123 You'll never lose this version, though. Was it ever actually recorded back during the album sessions?
I was there!!!
What concert is this?
Cassiesperry .Who me or the album??
there are two recorded versions...
You can get the mp3 at AnnaBegins. com
@behwal I was there and I was really disgusted at the crowd during this song, b/c I don't think most of them realized what was going on... but no one could sing along b/c this was the first time it was ever played :-) But yeah, I hear ya and agree. It was the first time they played the song to the public.
@billyjoet99 You nailed it boss ! That crowd was annoying the crap out of me !
you just made my boyfriend soooo happy
@bhartman36 yes it was the first time ever :-)
From where?
@Kathi435 you know you see those comments about "this song sux after [endtime]" ? well... i actually kinda got sad that it ended like that @ 7:51
@justfornow14 nobody really knows for sure. Adam insists she is a metaphor for himself though.
Click the link, go to Rare/Unreleased and you'll find this version.

@billyjoet99 why are you mad at the crowd? theyre obviously enjoying the music, crowds yell. it happens.
@Harpboy4 Totally agree hands down.
