One random fact I want to mention here I don't believe many Star Wars fans know is Ewan McGregor IRL is the nephew of Denis Lawson. Lawson was Wedge Antilles in Episodes 4-6. Piloted Red 2 in A New Hope's Battle of Yavin, piloted Rogue 3 in The Empire Strikes back during the Battle of Hoth and Red Leader in Return of the Jedi's Battle of Endor. Was really interested to learn this back in the day.

It's Natalie Portman. And Keira Knightley.
The speech of Jar Jar and others have also been criticized as ethic slurs. There's an internet theory that Jar Jar is Darth Jar Jar, Sith master.
Patience, child. Luke, Leia, storm troopers, and all the rest will appear in time.
There's the stand alone Han Solo movie that's his origin story. It's not well beloved.
And a stand alone Rogue Squadron movie that occurs immediately before Episode 4.
Anakin gets a rat tail at the end. It seems to mark Jedi apprentices.
Fast cars, racing, and dump thrumming hot rods were part of George Lucas's youth in Modesto, California. They also appear in his American Graffiti.

Personally, I find Jar Jar to be only a mild annoyance, but Ahmed Best (the actor playing him) faced real fan hate wich strongly contributed to his depression. Similar fate was that of Jake Lloyd (little Anakin). He basicly retired from acting becouse of fan backlash.

A sexy looking ship indeed.. that's why i had the idea for a underrated and like "unknown" disney movie from 1986. Flight of the Navigator. (not animated)
... While searching for his little brother in the woods, the young boy David, falls down a ravine and is knocked unconscious. After what seems like a few minutes, he returns home, only to discover in "his" family house now live total different people in it....police came and he begin to realize.. that eight years have passed since he was declared missing and presumed dead...
Even more mystifying is that David hasn't aged, nor can he account for the time lapse. Meanwhile, NASA officials stumble upon a futuristic spacecraft and are determined to assess what David knows about it by locking him in a top-secret lab for scanning and testing. So David's only hope to find answers is..this silver shaped spacecraft in this secret NASA lab...calling for him.

Qui-Gon wasn't really gambling because he loves to, he was doing it because it was the only way to "barter" with Watto, and presented an opportunity to get what they needed and a little more. Padme took issue with it, because at the end of the day it was still taking an unusual risk, but he just had a lot of faith in the force & Anakin.

That comment would get to long, but here are some points i would like to fix, because there is a likeable movie under all this.. "odd stuff"
    - The basic storyline of the Phantom Menace is simple and good: an unseen force is conspiring to take over the Republic.
    - This sounds interesting, right? Like Ancient Rome in Space! A mysterious high powered official is trying to take down the government from within.
    - Evil space wizards, thought to be extinct! All we need to do is scrape away the confusing and pointless bullshit so the story can "breathe"
    - Trim the distractions, bad comedy and bullshit and this movie actually works…
    - Darth Maul! Double agents! And a powerful young force user who’s in a unique position to save the day…if you don’t ruin Star Wars along the way.
    - Midichlorians ? (ugh), really boring Jedi, lazy dialogue and camera work, no chemistry. Underneath all of this is a good movie waiting to be discovered.
    - Points to"fix/improve" Jar Jar Binks.
    - Alien Language + subtitles for audience/also for the Trade Federation leads.
    - No fooling around/no poop jokes
    - More politics about the differences between the Gungan and Naboo people.
    - No more "black and white" thinking of the force
    - Just 15 Minutes for the Tatooine plot, not 45 min.!
    - More ligthsaber fights
    - More character building and motivation specially for Darth Maul
    - No Medichlorians
...and we might have a good Star Wars movie. I guess.

So basically change the identity of the entire movie to have it the way you want it. How about actually talking about the movie we got and ask why he made the movie like this instead of wishing it was what you were expecting or wanting. That’s my problem with most of the criticism. You can not like the movie. That’s totally fine. But to want to change the entire movie completely to fit your preferences is insane to me. Just talk about the movie itself . That’s just me though

The end of the fight between Qui Gon, Obi Wan and Darth Maul shows the difference between Sith and Jedi very well. When the laser partitions separated Qui Gon and Maul from each other, the Jedi began to meditate, calming down, and the Sith, on the contrary, walked in a rage like a tiger in a cage, filling himself with emotions. And when Obi Wan attacked Maul after the death of his master, you can see that he was filled with rage, which took him out of balance, since this is not the way of the Jedi and he does not know how to handle it, and Darth Maul, being a Sith who has been raised inside the order since childhood, who on the contrary feeds himself with emotions, easily he was defeated and thrown into the mine, and only when Obi Wan was able to calm down and return to balance, he was able to defeat Maul

When it came out people thought Lucas had lost the plot and this was a the most horrible thing to come out of Star Wars (there wasn't RUclips yet so most people had not seen The Holiday Special 🤪)
The main problem is that it took from the fairy-tale magic adventure of the first film to make it political intrigued plagued and the whole thing with the midichlorians took away from the whole mystical appeal of the force.
And then, there's Jar Jar Binks, maybe one of the most hated character in cinema history.
Also, no fault of his, but Jake Loyd wasn't the best child actor ever and young Anakin was just not interesting.
I dump on this film a lot, but it does has saving graces for two sequences.
First, the pod race. Just a masterclass.
The second is the three way fight between Qui Gon-Jinn (Liam Neeson), Obi Wan (Ewan Mcgregor) and Darth Maul.
That fight is undoubtedly one of the best choreographed and exciting laser sword fights of the whole franchise.
Neeson and McGregor were great in their roles and brought with them a lot of charisma and are without a doubt the anchors of this film.

As a kid, I enjoyed the lightsaber fights, podracing, etc. As an adult, a lot of stuff bothers me - the overuse of CGI (it will continue 😅), poorly established politics, and overuse of robots so the Jedi can go straight to violence 😬
Strangely, I don't mind Jar Jar (George loves a comedic bit and Jar Jar is basically a clown for children) or Jake Lloyd's acting (George is not good directing adults either 😅), and most of my issues are script based.
I hope you will reflect on Yoda's words from Empire as you watch the actions of these Jedi. I think George's attempt to load the prequels with action paints the Jedi in a rather violent light.

Your reaction to this is delightful and frustrating in about equal parts.I am in the minority of people who actually like this movie. A lot of the criticism of it come from people who are cranky when stories about the Force fail to conform to their own fantasy expectations, and who have no patience with long-form storytelling . In a story whose overall length (the first six episodes) come in at over 13 hours, a couple of hours of exposition and back-story are not unreasonable--particularly when they pay off later. Your disdain of JarJar is...not necessarily misplaced, but I can't say more because Spoilers. I find it interesting that you blithely accept other characters who other critics roundly hate (**cough** Jake Lloyd/Anikin **cough**) and take exception to the supposed racism of some characters' speech while completely ignore others which are much more pointed (I myself do not object to these fantasy characteristizations, but just sayin'). Btw I do enjoy your thoughtful and enthusiastic reaction, it did after all motivate me to write.

So for episode 2 & 3, there are good news and bad news. Good news is there'll be significantly less Jar Jar in those movies! Bad news is, the casting of adult Anakin will be...maybe "polarizing" is how people see it today? (Back then it was more universally panned.)

It's not really polarizing anymore. A vast majority of the fan base, and almost all of the diehard fans love Hayden... he is Anakin and Darth Vader. Maybe not when episode 2 was released, but definitely now. His return in Ahsoka made many, many fans cry. Everyone missed Hayden.

@@CoryGasaway Well maybe 1/3 of bad news then ;) I will admit, my strongest memory of Hayden is from episode two.

New fans don't have this reaction and they seem to love Hayden. Keep in mind, there were huge expectations when these movies came out and the hateful part of the fandom had the loudest voices. Sure, there are some cringey moments but overall Hayden did a good job. I think all you haters need to pay close attention to how new fans interpret these films. They DO NOT have 40 plus years of baggage keeping them from enjoying them. That's why they can enjoy the things that influencers at the time were telling us to hate, because they are not following the influencers. Doing a reaction video for Patreons keeps them honest.

I love this movie. I agree with you about Jar Jar. He's annoying from beginning to end. But the two scenes that make me hate him the most are him starting everything in the with Sebulba. The second he keeps eating everything until Qui Gon stopped him at the Skywalkers who are slaves. The rest is really great.

Anakin is like Jesus Christ. His father is the Force itself.

This movie faced a lot of criticism upon release. For one, Jar Jar was clearly meant to be a comic relief character aimed at kids, but he gets gratingly annoying very quickly. And yes, the Gungans and Trade Federation aliens were criticized for having accents that seemed like racial caricatures. The introduction of midi-chlorians seems to undercut the spiritual meaning of The Force, implying that one's strength in The Force has less to do with how much they believe in it and more to do with biology. The movie also feels much slower paced and involves uninteresting things like trade disputes and Senate hearings. It's often like watching Intergalactic C-SPAN in all the worst ways. And on top of that, the acting is often wooden and the dialogue sounds like it was written by someone unfamiliar with writing dialogue. It does have bright spots though. The production design is visually impressive, the pod race is thrilling, and Darth Maul is an intimidating villain for what little we get of him. And these days, people have lots of nostalgia for the movie, and some of the Disney sequels make Phantom Menace look great by comparison.

I agree with the wooden acting by Liam and Sam both. But I rather enjoy the political aspect. But I've been known to enjoy some CSPAN in my life.

This Movie was a lot of fun to watch from start to finish!
The Lightsaber Battle as well as the Podrace scene are the simply the best action scenes ever made.

I'm still angry i saw this movie twice the day it came out. Hated it so much. Will never watch it again. When my daughter was about 8 or 9, she said she had seen all four star wars movies (TFA had come out) because we do not discuss this film in my house

I absolutely loathe Jar-Jar. Not the actor, the character. There is a distinction, and one should not be confused with the other. But my GOD, George, how could you have thought that he was a good idea???!??? Even if, EVEN IF he really was meant to be the comic relief, or if he was supposed to be the source for child attraction, you failed on both those points. He's not funny, just annoying, so that's a fail. And as for catching/keeping the attention of a younger audience? 1, Anakin does a decent job of that (he's more annoying once you grow up and start to notice but that's also in part due to the lines he's given), and 2, there's so many parts of this movie that only adults would understand, to the point where you're not keeping their attention, so much as you are grabbing it for the briefest of moments before some babble about politics happens, losing them all over again.
