Fantastic! Good news this DVD has been restored and will be for sale this fall. As to how it came to be, here's a quote from the BBC: "A couple of years ago, we were at an event in which Michael Caine declared that Plummer was the best Hamlet he had ever seen, and that prompted us to make a serious search of the BBC Archive for viable footage."
A few years late to the party, but I wanted to correct some mistakes that I read in the Comments, just for the sake of the historical record, in case anyone else wanders by here, like I just did. It was Christopher Plummer, not Michael Caine, who publicly mentioned how much he wished that the BBC would release "Hamlet at Elsinore" on DVD. He said this at the Sarasota Film Festival, April 5th, 2011, during a roughly 90-minute, live, onstage interview, following the world premier of the newly-restored original footage. When Plummer said that during the interview, I'm pretty sure he was just having some fun with everyone involved: First, as I mentioned, the footage had already been restored. The interview was given immediately following its world premier public showing. Second, we already had the DVD on our release schedule, and Plummer knew that. The live interview had been set up specifically so that we could include it as an extra on the DVD, which streeted on October 11th that same year. (And yes, I said "we." I was the Snr Mngr of Home Video Operations, in the BBC's NYC office at the time. I was there from the beginning of this project to the end, and I remember it very well. I was one of the folks champing at the bit for this one to come out.) I hope that clears things up, for anyone who might be interested. Cheers, MJ
Would love to see more videos of Christopher Plummer on stage, especially Cyrano de Bergerac.

What a wonderful naturalistic contemporary performance by Christopher Plummer
My Dad was the recording engineer, just out of sight using a Uher Reporter 4000 tape recorder.
Michael Caine hanging out with the two J. Paul Getty's of 2017. Nice. :D
What a cast. Plummer, Caine, Shaw, Sutherland, Kiinnear. I still think though that the Russian version is the best.
