I couldn't help but think of two things. First, this old guy is looking for his past, which includes family and friends he can visit, but for an unknown reason, can't stay. But while visiting, someone hands him a guitar and ... whoa ..... this ol' guy is pretty good. Surprisingly good. Really, really good. You can't tell a book by it's cover. Next, the song's title, although not the music, reminds me of one of my half-dozen favorite Springsteen songs, "Something in the Night," which is on his classic fourth album, "Darkness on Edge of Town." In that song the singer is vaguely, or explicitly, unhappy, but not sure why. Something is missing. Could be a girl, a job, a sense of community, or invisible game, anything. The singer, himself, may not know. What it is is irrelevant; it may be different for each of us. What's universal is the emotion and the realization that we all feel it; that we're all human, we're all chasing something in the night.
Bruce Springsteen to me is a Prophet, a Seer, an Interpreter of the times he has lived through. A veritable Hunter of Invisible Game. He sees things the rest of us would not have noticed and he communicates that esoteric knowledge to us through his accessible, insightful and invigorating music. When he leaves us he will leave a void that will be very hard to replenish but will live on in one sense through his marvellous, insightful lyrics. The invisible game he tracked were of the mind, of the imagination but the tracks he'll leave will be a mesmerizing, meandering soundtrack that'll stand the test of time, till the edge of doom, way beyond the darkness on the edge of town.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised but it's turned out to be one of the best albums he's ever made. I had been expecting some sort of grab bag album. It's far more than that however.
