My 11-years older brother turned me onto Bruce and it’s late August,1980 and I’m playing high school football in Monessen, PA, a steel town in fast economic decline 30 mile south of Pittsburgh. I’m 17 years old, I’m 6’3” and weigh 160 pounds. Our 106 year old house does not have air conditioning. At night orange light from the steel mill fills the walls of my bedroom. Three-a-day football practices are kicking my ass! Every night after mom’s great meal I go to my room, put on side B of my vinyl copy of “The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle” (bought used for $2.50 in Charleroi, the next town down the river) and I fall asleep to side B’s three lengthily classics: “Incident,” “Rosalina,” and, “NYC Serenade.” Damn, what a great childhood I had!
Damn, can't believe you said that. I had my bedroom downstairs, and told my dad to plat side B...greatest side of all albums, to wake me up everyday...
Similar experience growing up in Chicago, but my 2 yr. younger brother was hip to Bruce first and I was on swim team. Weren't we lucky to grow up with Bruce in our young lives?!?
Excuse my language, but what a fucking masterpiece of a song: the words, the piano, the vocals,. The board mix on this is perfect, and, oh my god, those strings. Absolute perfection! When they bring it down and lift it back up on the "He's singing" part, I get chills every time. I love those backing vocals there, too.
Yes, yes--yes🎉 But thinking back on all the Bruce shows we've seen over the years (1978--2023...) I don't remember them doing THIS ONE...and I think I'd remember THIS ONE!!
This is the most beautiful song ever recorded. I played it last night off of You Tube Music for my wife and kids for the first time and usually they talk through songs I pick or ask me to hook up their phones to the car audio but they all listened all the way through. Brilliant arrangement and kudos to a couple of the members of the band involved with the original record; David Sancious and Clarence Clemons, all in their early 20's when they arranged this masterpiece.
It's 10 years to the day since this was recorded and I'm sitting here 9 months pregnant, taking it all in. My baby is bopping to the music as tears stream down my face (we'll blame the hormones...!) This is hands down my favourite Boss song. Here's hoping they will play it live again soon. Thank you, thank you, from a very emotional mama to be. ❤
i read this and though i always agreed, i got it out and listened to it again. and again. and again. and again. repeat. for like 8 times in a row. it is so good.
Composed by a young 20-something year old...brilliant and for those who doubt this mans talent, listen. This man was destined for greatness. The smiles on the violinists faces says it all.
I was there, I couldn't believe this song was finally making it in the setlist, it was a dream come true. Everything was surreal: the bright Roman summer night sky, a night train passing-by in the distance while Bruce sings "hook up to the night train", the Roma Sinfonietta on stage playing the original score, the silent crowd as if there was only one person attending (me), the energy and the commotion of the thousands of us... In short, the type of thrills you get only from a Springsteen concert!
Credevo nessuno se ne fosse accorto di quel treno regionale passato dentro il buio della notte. Grazie. Custodisco quell'immagine silenziosa accanto al cuore - il posto giusto.
This crown jewel of Springsteen's prodigious musical output recorded over 50 years ago nestles quietly as the final track on his second studio album. Great reading the comments below to find so many others appreciate this gem. This version is just a treat for your ears- thanks for posting.
This is perfection. Everything about it is incredibly moving. I come back to this video whenever I need a lift. My favorite song by Bruce. When the string section comes in, it sends shivers down my spine. The joy and smiles on their faces tell me that they knew they were part of something special. You can see that Bruce signed their score sheets. I bet a lot of those sheets are framed and hanging on a wall...
Every time I watch this, I cry. This man so much understands the little movements of everyday life and sacrifice of so many millions of just plain common people. Back in the 1960s, when I was growing up about a dozen miles from Manhattan, the Sunday New York Times magazine ran on its cover the photo of a daisy springing up from a crack in a a let-down concrete walkway. I saved it because hope always springs from the oddest and most destitute of places. I have always loved Springsteen because I think that he understands this, and his understanding comes out in songs such as this one. So thank you,m Bruce, for the joy and for your understanding of just what it is that makes us human beings tick!
Thank you for sharing that with us other Bruce fans. I am at a painful, and heartbreaking crossroads in my 61yrs old life. Last night I strolled the west side of my city with this song as backdrop, playing thru my earbuds, straight in through my head to my heart & my very soul. Extremely moving. Tonight a stroll through the music of Bruce and the Band is just beginning. What a great song to start me off. 🎼 🎶 🎷 🎺 🎹. 🎸🎻🎙🎵
I cry too! It's just so beautiful and does anyone besides me think this song paints the perfect picture of a couple making love? I made love to my boyfriend the first time I heard this song. My boyfriend bought the album and if you haven't made love while playing this, you need to!!

Wow, all these comments are blowing me away. I always felt like I was in my own secret world when I listened to this song through the years, but of course you all know it and love like I do! What a performance bringing this song to life. Hats off to The Wild and the Innocent from just another Jersey boy.
I absolutely LOVE the "Am-I-dreaming?" joy with which the Roma Sinfonietta is playing. So honored to be invited there on stage with Bruce the Maestro! I watch this almost every night. Only Bruce can capture you like this. Even some of the violinist you could see the girl at the end with the big smile. Such an incredible moment from Bruce. You could see their energy growing from his performance
A Bruce fan since 1977 (I was 16, grew up about 20 min from Freehold NJ and used to crank it up in my '73 Camaro) It's amazing that one person can write this music, write the lyrics and perform it so damn good! Keep rockin' Bruce!

Im 18 years old and Bruce is probably the greatest gift I’ve ever gotten. Songs for every mood, breathtaking live performances and a human making real music. And my favorite part about him is that his so original. Rappers today buys a Lamborghini or a Ferrari after their breakthrough. Bruce still rolls with his Chevy SS. Never let money change him
Aww man, this is just something else. Ive never seen this version until just now. Wow. Just look at the string players smiling, they know they are part of something so special. You can see Bruce even autographed the score. This is an ethereal performance - those in the audience were given a great gift that night; it is a rarity indeed. Bruce wrote this at age 23, God bless him.
Bruce opened the show with this when I saw him a few years back. It was the 6th time I had seen him live and I had never seen him play this song before. I was just to the side of the stage, not very far from Bruce and the band. I got quite emotional and tear rolled down my face. It was so moving.
I thought Jungleland was the finest ever live performance I had ever seen on YT , by any band ever, and then they do this, honestly I am lost for words

For years, starting in college and afterwards I would always play this song just after sunrise, right before going to bed. Obviously I didn't spend much time in classes 😂 This is not only my favorite Springsteen song on my favorite Springsteen album, it's my favorite song of ALL TIME!!! ❤️
What happens when a genius singer/songwriter mixes one part Gershwin, one part Leonard Bernstein, one part Dylan, one part Van Morrison, and one part Gregorian chants with his own inimitable style? The best 12 minutes on RUclips.
Profoundly powerful song and album from an American master musician and storyteller. Hauntingly beautiful and the tears just well up in my eyes before I’m even aware of it instantly taking me back 45 years like a Time Machine.
I will always thank my father for giving me the opportunity to see this. I was 13 years old at the time, and I will never forget that song, the orchestra... In hindsight, this will always be the most incredible live performance I will have ever seen. Thanks boss and thanks dad
This is the most complex and masterful rock and roll son ever written. It is part classical, part jazz, part soul, part gospel, part folk, part opera that is compounded together to make a West Side Story type rock ballad. I simply do not know if this type of music still can be written, but I certainly wish that it would. I must say that I yearn for the Bruce of old, he really should try to write a throwback record!
A beautiful version of my favourite Bruce song: perfect string arrangements (nice to see Bruce salute the players at the end), lovely piano intro by Roy Bittan (building on the original by the excellent David Sancious), and how great to see Clarence's nephew flawlessly recreating the big man's saxophone parts! Fab!
I never thought he could touch the original. But this just might be definitive. This is the album that made me a believer. Still in my All Time Top Ten.
@@nkjrm348 Oh, yes, yes, PLEASE, let's bow deeply to the invaluable and criminally underrated contribution of David Sancious' here. And, let's be honest, arrangements like this piano part and on Incident on 57th St qualify (as do Bittan's parts all over the 3rd LP) for co-writing credit that they never got, whatever reason. My humble opinion. And, yeah, as the precursor to Jungleland, Meeting Across the River and Backstreets, these 2 from the 2nd LP, NY City Serenade is inexcusably unnoticed by the world at large. Can you imagine? After this album they were f'n ready to drop him from the label?
Some songs make you want to dance. Some songs want to make you cry. Some songs make you want to turn off the radio. Being a Springsteen fan for 30 years I figured Racing in the Street was always going to be my favourite but now I want to hook up to the night train. This performance transports you to NYC walking in amongst all the characters and the violins just make your spirit soar. Quite a wonderful thing when 12 notes can do that and stop you in your tracks.....
And it's a one-off! Because Bruce felt the guy with the sign who followed E Street throughout Europe deserved it! So they brought in the string section and conductor, rehearsed with the band and camera crew...for a one-off! And by the way, it is magnificent in every way. Thanks for sharing.
I was raised in NJ and am a fan of his from his first album and have never seen a live performance of this song- my favorite all-time Bruce favorite. Thank you for sharing how and what got him to perform it, really nice to know. And many thanks to the fan who carried the banner and got him to play my favorite song. Wished I was there in person.....wish he would play it live sometime here in the states. Grateful that I got to see this live perfromance, a dream come true.
Ok, I was wondering about that. I asked in my previous comment if that was true, that where was a fan that kept following him around Europe requesting that song - thus, the sign at beginning of the video. Do you know where they got the string section from? Also I’ve got a crush on the female violinist on the far right.
Hey jazz man, play me your serenade...My secret favorite Bruce's song...a feeling so much shared around, as I see... Simply stunning. I would like to last forever surrounded by these notes. A beautiful starry night in New York 40 years ago traveling through time and space to our days to save us all and remind us of the immense beauty in the heart of every human being...
I think they get shade they don't deserve. What other group of musicians draw such an age range for an audience ? And the emotion they stir, the tear they draw, grown men even, and we're not supposed to be giving, to such a display. I pray I live to see them just one more time. Love to the Band, and all their fans.
So beautiful... the performance is perfect, as is the videography. I am once again in my bed listening to this record as I am falling asleep, with classes to attend the next day.
Greatest version of undoubtedly the greatest song of all time.. I have matched up every great version of every song I have ever heard and nothing comes close to comparison.
Well I was there when he played the whole album live in order in Brisbane for only the second time ever ..... I was so excited because the violin players were spotted going in and I started receiving text messages that the album was going to be played ..... when it actually happened it was a dream come true.
Pindrop silence as soon as the Professor hits the first piano note till the end when the crowd erupts as one. The band and the crowd realize that magic is happening. My favorite song from the album. Thank you Bruce for enriching our lives.
I was there, at that fantastic concert in Rome! It was my first Boss concert and when I heard to that song I was unbeliever! At my first Bruce concert he played this fantastic song... He's really the best!
I remember finding this song in 1984 when I was a Sophomore in HS. I used to listen to it and fall asleep I remember because of the crying strings and Clarence’s Sax. Jake is searching for the feel for it and Roy plays it a little different here but the song is so full and the string section really makes it. That string section backs up Michael Bolton, Andrea Bocelli, and some other artists that subcontract them. I think they are happy to be there as they smile when Bruce turns to them, you can tell they know they are part of something special. What a great song.. it's a very emotional song...wow!
Omg I thought It was just me. 60 yr old Italian male I cry every time I ever listened to this song starting as an 18 year old, strolling through Manhattan. So Walk Tall, or Dont Walk at All.
Me removió toda por dentro desde la primera vez que la oí. Hoy la sigo oyendo y me produce las mismas vibraciones, sentimientos,me evade del mundo.... Bravo!!!! La mejor canción que he oído en mi vida.
This is jaw droppingly beautiful... Flawless performance, and it was unplayed for so long...! I'd give anything to have been there. Rome got a very special gift that night.
What a way to request it. A nice big banner with one of his classic songs from his second album. One of the hardest songs to play. Awesome job by the string section. Great piano playing by the Professor. Not easy though.

I saw him sing this in 1979 in St Louis at the Arena. I was in college and clapped so hard when he danced on his piano with red tennis shoes that I broke blood vessel in my finger and had to have my ring cut off. One of the best of many concerts in my life. clap clap clap❤
i was there and myself and three beautiful italian fans hugged and had tears of pure joy as the first notes of this masterpiece echoed around campanelle racetrack at around 11pm local time on a beautiful warm night in the greatest city on this planet❤❤ michael from london ❤❤❤
Why this song leaves me like an emotion wreck, I never know. I just love this song, love Bruce's music, and love Bruce more than life itself. It's so scary, in a good way though, how you can find fragments of your life in his music. It feels like you are the main character in his songs, and that's how real Bruce's music is.

12 minutes of pure genius. Spellbound everytime I watch this, my jaw just drops. Love seeing how much the strings are enjoying this song.
Profoundly powerful song and album from an American master musician and storyteller.
Hauntingly beautiful and the tears just well up in my eyes before I’m even aware of it instantly taking me back 45 years like a Time Machine.
How can this beautiful story and music not touch you on some emotional level. We were fortunate enough to be able to watch genius in our time.
Something very poignant about Bruce as a grown man singing this song that is so evocative of his youth. Love it.
New York City Serenade... the best song ever
Yes indeed.
🔥Happy 70th BIRTHDAY 🗽 dear 🎁 Mr Bruce Springsteen!!!!!!! ♥️😘 grazie and love from germany :)
I will always thank my father for giving me the opportunity to see this. I was 13 years old at the time, and I will never forget that song, the orchestra... In hindsight, this will always be the most incredible live performance I will have ever seen. Thanks boss and thanks dad
Simply the finest live performance of any song you'll ever hear, stunningly beautiful...!!
My all time favourite
no doubt about it
Nello7 agree. Been blown away since I first heard tut in 1974. I don’t know where it came from
Credit to David Sancious for the string arrangement I think.
I learned to play the guitar in 1985 after hearing this song. It blew me away and I knew I had to learn to play it!! Beautiful beautiful song.
Got to be the most perfect piece of live music ever love u bruce
A beautiful version of my favourite Bruce song: perfect string arrangements (nice to see Bruce salute the players at the end), lovely piano intro by Roy Bittan (building on the original by the excellent David Sancious), and how great to see Clarence's nephew flawlessly recreating the big man's saxophone parts! Fab!
I never thought he could touch the original. But this just might be definitive. This is the album that made me a believer. Still in my All Time Top Ten.
Thank you for remembering David. The original EStreeter. I still tear up at the memory of Clarence.
Glorious. I love how the string section is smiling the whole time. Everyone seemed to realize how special this was.
Brings me to tears sometimes now.All my friends that were there with me listening when we were young. No longer here.
The last minute of this song is one of the most beautiful things of I have ever heard.
I love the little clips of the orchestras faces.
You can really tell they are just blown away by being part of this
How could they not? I would have been blown away just to hold a Tamborine on that stage.
The magic fingers of Roy Bittan provide a sophisticated backdrop to this wonderful song of the seedy life of the city.🎵 ❤❤❤
I saw Bruce play this at the Tower Theatre in Upper Darby Pa . In 1974, been a fan ever since
This is the best song Bruce has ever written and played. So much meaning and genius compilation.
Absolutely
Un my opinion, the best song is lost in the flood but all the songs of "The wild, The inocent and the e street shuffle" are good.
We'll said
Man, 50ys later there's still no equal to this song!
You can almost smell NYC in this song...pure creative genius. Better and better every year
Every emotion under the sun, all wrapped up in one song. Amazing
Classic Springsteen, its not about the performer, its all about the performance.
Uh qué buebaxes😅😮😢🎉😂😂
Am I the only one that thinks that the E Street Band dont get enough credit ?
Best group of musicians of all time.
Yeah, man!!
Especially during tours between 2012 and 2014...
I think they get shade they don't deserve. What other group of musicians draw such an age range for an audience ? And the emotion they stir, the tear they draw, grown men even, and we're not supposed to be giving, to such a display. I pray I live to see them just one more time. Love to the Band, and all their fans.
They are brilliant at interpreting Bruce's songs and making them the best they can be.
You right!
I luv falling asleep 2 this the Professor hitting those keys. Pure magic
Quante volte l'ho guardato e quante ho pianto. Una delle notti più belle della mia vita.
Amazing song in a blinding performance.
I stood hypnotized through the whole video.
That's a good way to describe this, a totally 'blinding performance." Hypnotizing. His best.

Oh, Rome, How very blessed you were to have Bruce grace you with that incredibly special performance of this song!
This is absolutely stunning. Always loved this. Never thought I’d see it done live so sublimely.
Tante lacrime. Come in quella serata di luglio a Roma.
Concerto indimenticabile.
Grazie!
Lucky bastards. He only played this like 6 times live. Happy for everyone who heard it!
Well I was there when he played the whole album live in order in Brisbane for only the second time ever ..... I was so excited because the violin players were spotted going in and I started receiving text messages that the album was going to be played ..... when it actually happened it was a dream come true.
Ok! I'll take it as a compliment😂 yes I was there and still can't believe it
@@billk9856 🥰
seen him like 40x never seen this
opening song in Philly in 9/7/16, and I absolutely went ape shit
That whole album is great!
He's really the best!
wow
I can never just listen to this just once. No other song does this to me.
It's the best song I've ever heard in my life too. And I have lived long...👍
This is jaw droppingly beautiful...
Che bello poter dire "Io c'ero" .
Emozioni fortissime.. grazie Bruce :)
"Its a mad dog's promenade" "So walk Tall or Baby dont walk at all"Bruce Springsteen ❤❤❤❤
One of the best live performances ever done and perhaps ever will be. Pure art, period.
imm listening to this for 38 years more in love with this now than ever just no words for this
concordo !
Most underrated springsteen song. A true masterpiece.
One of the greatest stories put to music....ever.
Amen to that Phil.
For sure, Phil!
che emozione risentirla che emozione sapere di essere lì a nemmeno un metro dal palco...una piccola fetta della mia vita grazie a qs video sarà immortale! grazie BRUCE
Anyone else notice Gary’s brilliant base line. It holds the price together
I was just going to comment on that. Understated and effective. And he's an Ocean Grove boy!
100% especially towards the end. The great backbone of the band.
Garry is just magnificent (as always) in this
zorahsfrus
Amazing that thousands of people can not make a single sound....perfection!
I saw him sing this in 1979 in St Louis at the Arena. I was in college and clapped so hard when he danced on his piano with red tennis shoes that I broke blood vessel in my finger and had to have my ring cut off. One of the best of many concerts in my life. clap clap clap❤
Definitely one of Bruce’s most underrated songs of all-time
Brilliant how Gary is soloing like a madman during the outro while he doesn't even get a single shot from the director
As a Bruce nut, I know I'm biased, but bloody hell that is astonishing!!!
WOW! OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE BY ALL!
i was there and myself and three beautiful italian fans hugged and had tears of pure joy as the first notes of this masterpiece echoed around campanelle racetrack at around 11pm local time on a beautiful warm night in the greatest city on this planet❤❤ michael from london ❤❤❤
I am with you, heart and soul !
Heart and soul. This is Bruce pouring it out for us.
Wue buvrd
The passion
Would have loved to see this in Person! One of the BEST versions ever....
