Depends on the eSIM. Some give you data only, in which case you can call using Whatsapp, Signal, Facetime, etc. whereas others have number as well. Those with the number and the carrier will determine how and if you can make international calls.
Superb, thank you! Maybe you could also add this: to avoid roaming charges you MUST turn off your physical SIM. I believe that if you leave both SIMs enabled (one primary one secondary) you could still jncur roaming. Is that correct?
Right, your primary SIM will remain independent of any additional (e)SIMs. So if roaming charges would apply, then definitely deactivate that SIM while you're aboard.
@@foXnoMad Thanks for the reply. I have a more detailed question! When I go abroad (when I DON'T have an eSIM) I put the phone into airplane mode then turn on WiFi. Then I can use WiFi calling and texting on my main SIM without connecting to cellular and therefore I avoid roaming. Can I still do that once I also have an eSIM? Would I have to toggle, e.g. connect to cellular if the eSIM is enabled and then go into airplane mode if I want to use my main SIM? And back again afterwards? Thank you so much
Happy to help. With a single SIM (e or otherwise) having airplane mode on and just wifi will give you access to VoIP calling like Facetime, Whatsapp, Signal, etc. When you have more than one SIM (e.g. you've added an eSIM now) you'll have to disable/deactivate the first SIM in the settings. Otherwise if you have airplane mode on, both SIMs won't work. I'm using eSIM and SIM interchangeably here because the concept applies to both. Let me know if that makes sense!
If I want to do texts, say with WhatsApp, don’t I need to have a working phone number? It sounds like the esim option you describe only enables internet traffic.
For Whatsapp you do need a phone number for the account but once it's set up then any Internet connection (eSIM or otherwise) will work. You don't need to change the number with each eSIM/Internet connection. Hope this helps!

Very helpful video thanks. Does my phone number change? Will sms still work?
No, any additional eSIM (or SIM) won't change the number on any other eSIM. They're all independent, hope this helps!
Just to confirm can i make only local phone calls ..or call internationally (home too)?
Depends on the eSIM. Some give you data only, in which case you can call using Whatsapp, Signal, Facetime, etc. whereas others have number as well. Those with the number and the carrier will determine how and if you can make international calls.
I am going to France and UK, will one eSIM plan with roaming work or will I need two plans?
Most providers offer a regional eSIM (e.g. Europe card that covers most countries).

thank you for the video
You're welcome!
Does the phone you plan to use overseas need to be unlocked in order to switch eSIMs?
In most cases the phone must be carrier unlocked.
What if i need a local phone number at my destination? Can you get an esim with a number and phone plan?
It depends on the eSIM providers in that particular country. Some have number options while others are data only.
