The Franklin half dollar is a silver coin that was minted by the United States Mint from 1948 to 1963. The coin was designed by John R. Sinnock, the Chief Engraver of the United States Mint at the time. The coin is named after Benjamin Franklin, one of the Founding Fathers of the United States, who is featured on the obverse (front) side of the coin. The Franklin half dollar was replaced by the Kennedy half dollar in 1964, following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. The Kennedy half dollar continued to be minted and remains in circulation today.
Franklin half dollars, especially those in high grades and with specific mintmarks, can be valuable to coin collectors. The condition, rarity, and historical significance of the coin influence its collector's value. The reverse side of the coin features the Liberty Bell, a prominent symbol of American independence. Surrounding the Liberty Bell are a small eagle and the inscription "E Pluribus Unum" (Out of Many, One), the denomination "Half Dollar," and the motto "United States of America."
When grading a Franklin half dollar, numismatists and collectors pay close attention to the details of the Bell Lines. The presence or absence of Full Bell Lines can influence the overall grade and market value of the coin. Coins without Full Bell Lines may still be valuable, but those with the complete and bold lines are generally preferred by collectors.
