I think part of your problem is that you used VARNISH instead of matte MEDIUM. Varnish would go on top after, but the medium works for the toothiness to work with it. I use mine with an airbrush but it also works painting it on. Package says 25% water. Hope this helps! Love your face ups
Good point... but does using the matte medium make it shiny in the end? Because I’m comfortable using acrylic paints instead of pencils if I have to I just really don’t want a shiny finish, any tips?😊
Holly Rusher It will almost certainly be shinier when dabbed/painted on than applied with an airbrush, just because the application method leaves it less... bumpy, for lack of a better phrasing. There's a less even refraction from many tiny drops forming a coat versus a sponged on coat.
I don't do doll customizing nor have I ever considered it, but your videos are so good I can't help but watch every single one! All of your repaints- and videos- are very well done, and your style is absolutely adorable! I used to work at HobbyTown USA, here in Charleston, and I would recommend calling ahead to make sure that your local store has it before coming in. The website almost never has what the store does and vice-versa. Also, remember that they will order anything that they can get their hands on, for you. And ordering it through them typically doesn't cost extra :)
I saw one video where a girl used this method, and she used liquitex matte varnish mixed with water and used it in an air brush, and she says it provides even better "tooth" than MSC, and now, it's the only method she uses
Please do a face-up on the beautiful iridescent doll with violet hair from the Haunted line. She's gorgeous and I bet you could make her even more so. ^.^
I have been using liquitex matte varnish mixed with some water and brushed on about 3 or 4 coats before you start the faceup the plastic gains a nice tooth and you can work with it well with colored pencils and pastels
Hi Maddie, is it also possible to do "fixation" layers in between and apply the Liquitex with a sponge or pencil without the pencils coming off? Or would I need something else for that and for the final fixation? Thank you for sharing your experience! It's so helpful
Hey there! We live in Pennsylvania and have no MSC anywhere, So we got Matte Varnish. We're starting up our first 3 dolls. But had not started with the faces. We don't even have the proper sealant at the stores. All we have is Krylon and they have Aceton in it. Weird ingredient choice for a "Sealant". So in the mean time, We used glitter glue and surprisingly, It kept the paint and pastels on the doll's body very well. Yeah, It's alittle stiff in the joints, But it works well... so far. It's a good back up sealant when you don't have the big tools. Wonder if it works well with Watercolor pencils? Well, The glue when dried is rough some how... We could be wrong. So Don't yell at us! We have very little allowance and it's hard to find the right sealant (And Dolls) these days. It's all we have!
One thing I really love most about your repaints is that the faces you do are the perfect mix of cartoon and realistic. They don't look way too cartoon like, but they also don't look too realistic. Your channel for doll repaints is my favorite for that reason. Keep up the good work!
dollightful then: "i havent done a face in just acrylics" dollightful now in 2021: has made a water dragon with like 30 ball joints and painted in full acrylic
Could you do a video using liquitex matte medium? It's supposed to provide an even better "tooth" than msc, and you can use it the same way as you used the varnish.
nice experiment! :) We should play around with purity seal, I've been told it is the same as MSC but cheaper and bigger. but I been hesitant about it because of the dangerous material shipping fee -.-
I made a doll for my 5 year old cousin and she loved it! she has always been obbsesed with the dolls you make so I decided to copy her favourite and niw it sits on her shelf next to her bed, I just want to say thank you!
Varnishes only do well as a way of putting a final seal on the doll's faceup. Try using a matt medium next time to seal your doll's bare face, and you'll find you'll get that tooth and texture you need to do faceups, and just use the vanish to seal it all in! Good luck!
thats what i use, but i dont use a watercolor pencil, i use faber castell polychromos pencils because they are oil based they work really nicely on the matte medium, but it is tricky if you mess up to remove the matte medium on the face later
Have you tried using citadell Matt sealent? It's used in painting warhammer. It's easy to get in the EU, but I would love to see a rewiev like this in how it compairs to MSC.
I was looking at the sealants they have in my local workshop. I'm curious as to how the Warhammer and Humbrol (?) seals work on dolls. I'm assuming they'll be different types of plastic so one type of paint and seals might work for one but not the other?
Thank you for sharing this. I use acrylic paint and matte varnish on my face-ups and so far I haven't had a problem. I'm afraid of the toxicity of Mr. Super Clear. My doctor has advised me against using it. I'm very leery of even handling a doll that was repainted with MSC because I wouldn't want it to be absorbed through my skin. Better safe than sorry.
I don't have access to MSC so I have tried several different sealants to work with watercolour pencils. Matt varnish -no. Fixative -no. Matt lacquer -kinda but gives shiny and bumpy skin. So I use acrylic paints but it hasn't occurred to me to use sealant with them. I have to try this watered down technique! Thank you for sharing this experiment!
jatta89 so very true especially since you helped spark my ideas for trying doll repaints myself I would love to know the products you use or have interest in experimenting with.
I love Rochelle’s freckles, they make her look less perfect. And they remind me a bit of my acne, it’s good to see that shown as beauty rather than shame.
I know this is an old video, but I just want to say that it's really nice to see folks looking for cheaper, safer alternatives that are more readily available to a larger array of users. I don't do doll customizing, rather, I repaint action figures and Gunpla in my spare time, but the Mister line is still highly prevalent and there's a lot of back and forth about consistent quality over time vs the toxicity and availability. This might not work as well on a vinyl doll, but when I was working on my Siege Megatron, I used a Krylon spray acrylic matte top coat that work spectacularly for providing a very flat finish that had a subtle tooth not unlike very fine sketch paper. It allowed me to utilize some very nice dry brushing techniques I was having trouble with before sealing, and it's definitely something I'm going to keep using for future projects. There's also the option of using products like Mod Podge, but that can be argued to be a non-archival finish due to the fact that you can reactivate Mod Podge with sufficient water exposure, so using the material would depend heavily on your intended use of the figure. In any case, good job on this repaint, Rochelle looks super cute!
I've been thinking about getting into doll customizations for a bit now but I've been terrified to use MSC and also have been trying to keep my costs low. Thank you so much for comparing them! I feel a lot less nervous about diving in to a new hobby, lol
I really like this face up, it's a nice change from the MSC heavy versions I see around. I work mostly on action figures rather than fashion dolls, but I confront similar issues with tooth and sealing, and I usually use mostly really fine sandpaper and translucent acrylic enamel paint for most of my work. I've yet to figure out a real "tried and true" method that works 100% of the time for me, so seeing all these alternatives is really refreshing and gives me LOTS of ideas.
I just started with my first doll and it didn't really turn out as I wanted, but I had so much fun making it! I really wanna thank you for being a big inspiration
I come from the future to tell you I found a spray matte varnish that doesn't react weirdly with the vinyl. I honestly didn't have much hope on it, but since I'm a newbie and MSC and Liquitex varnish are kinda expensive here, I gave it a try. Best thing out of all is that it's actually very cheap.
Very good work. I'll pass on MSC and use varnish with acrylic like I use to. I just asked someone on RUclips about using wc pencil w/water. You save me some time. 😊 It's been 15+ yrs since I've done faceups. Better use a donor doll first. Thank for sharing. 💙🙏🏽💜
I love you for this! I live in an apartment with no individual entrance, so using MSC is a HUGE pain!! It's nice to know there are options out there, even if they aren't as good
I cannot get MSC where I live, and when I order it online it is well over $30 CAD. So I am trying other spray on varnishes. There is some viable options available, I have just not tried them all. Also I need to do more coats.
hello girls.lm also canadian girl and super clear is soooo hard to find.for now l order on amazon Testors its not expensive but shipping really is.l did some research and one girl also canadian told me she tried Krylon clear matte and its great.its easier to find and not expensive. so l will give it a try .hope that helps
You can get it at micheals art supply stores in the hobby model section, its 6.99 and if you search micheals coupons online you can get on every single day for 40% regular priced items.
Nigel Kronkberry when I sprayed my vinyl face it became sticky and glossy but the plastic body came out great. Do you coat the vinyl with another sealant first?
Most of the fashion dolls have soft vinyl heads and most of the sealants make them glossy and sticy on them. Msc or u sing a matte varnish with an airbrush are probably the very best options
Dollightful I've known of people using Vallejo clear varnish for the MH dolls. It surprised me it worked for them not having tooth or anything like with MSC. I haven't tried myself but seems to be a cheaper option (not sure if it's less toxic than MSC being a spray aswell tho...)
You're amazing! I'm in the middle of customizing one of my dolls, and you're my inspiration! I absolutely love your work! I especially love the eyes!! ❤️❤️
msc is super hard to get here where I live (Colombia) so I found an alternative, there's a matte spray used for sealing pastel and water colors made for artists so try to look for something like that, it worked for me
Miguel Nivia she won't find it , if you do not provide the name of it and which company makes it, which should be on your spray. Make it easier for her, and provide full information.
What is it called, and where can you get it? Ive never found a sealant that keeps the face up matte and protected like MSC. I’d like to know about this
Hola! Tambien soy de Colombia y quería saber cual es la marca que usas, compre un sellante, pero deja todo demasiado brillante y no funciona bien ;;;;;
Artist tiger lily 562 my cats mom died because a wild animal ate her and my cat got beat up so much than some of her flesh was hanging out and i think she is dead now because my cousin said she saw a dead cat than looked identical to my cat
I forgot for a really long time about my Apple White doll, and later on, I plan to try and give her a face-up! You're my inspiration, so thank you, annyeong!
Man, I wonder how many times I've come back to watch this video in the past few weeks since I first found this channel. I've become really interested in trying my hand at doll repainting, but with my current living situation, using MSC is just not feasible. So I'm thinking I'd have to take the matte varnish route instead. This doll came out so well in the end that I'm not at all discouraged by that! I do wonder if a light sanding to the varnish would help give it that tooth and make pastels and pencils go on easier. Something to try if I end up giving this a go, I suppose!
If you ever decide to try this again, may I suggest Krylon matte finish? I’ve been using it as a sealant since I can’t afford a ventilation mask for MSC and it’s been doing a good job for me
I use another spray sealant (I think it's duracote or something) that used for model cars in most of my face ups, it's cheaper, easily affordable and does all the same stuff as Msc for me. plus it removes easily with alcohol. So if anyone in the states has a hobby lobby near by I'd suggest giving it a try.
I know it's pretty old video (love your channel and watch it regularly!), but personally, because I'm scared of Mr. Super Clear's toxicity, I tried to find an alternative and now I'm using Motip Dupli-Color Aqua Clear Matt (seen it called Motip Aqua Acryl too) spray for my repaints and really like it! It's non-toxic spray sealant, suitable for toys and eco-friendly. And It almost doesn't smell. Downsides are, it's a bit tricky to use - you should shake it about 5-7 minutes (package says 3) and it generates kind of bubbles/foam leaking from spraying tip so you should clean it when it happens, sometimes during/inbetween spraying. If you don't sometimes you spray this "foam" on the doll and it leaves white dots. It also don't work that well with colored pencils, but perfectly with pastels and acrylics. With too many coats it can get a bit cloudy, but I heard Mr Super Clear has the same problem? But when you know how to use it, in my opinion it's almost perfect alternative for MSC and airbrush sealants.
I have tried mod podge with a little cornstarch and it works pretty well! The only draw back is that the more layers you apply it looks very gritty on the face, but I think if you water it down it would work a little better! I really suggest trying it +dollightful!
wtf even if it was more difficult to you, you did an amazing doll, I can even understand how you did it xDD you are such a talented artist, I can't believe it lmao
Well they are marketed as "brush on" I assume that means you could use them with a standard brush. I build model kits and I personally prefer results over safety (although I also live in a suburb so I have the ability to use rattle cans basically anywhere any time, so I can understand the need for safety in a non-toxic alternative)
If I'm being honest Matte Varnish is the only one I'd be able to get my hands on and from certain angles all Monster High dolls have shiny faces, and a shiny face makes it look more realistic and not like she's wearing any makeup and the face is all natural. Really cool
Cloud King I think a lot of the shinyness and lack of tooth is caused by the sponge/brush application - you're applying thicker layers in general. Even MSC will get shiny if you overspray. Much of the tooth comes from how the sealant is atomized when sprayed from an airbrush or can.
I may have to look into msc one day when I have more money but for now I picked up a couple different sprays & I plan to do my first custom once my watercolor pencils and Venus arrive
this doll had many firsts, from first time not using MSC to first place in worst eyebrows XD also i think MSC looks better so when i begin i will get MSC
I've done doll customizing in the past, and I normally use acrylic paint only, and I end up taking a lot of time for drying. I think being the resources I use, Mr. Super clear is going to be my new number 2 option😁
I'm glad to see you've done a video on trying a different alternative from MSC [I can't get from where I live, and I don't have the freedom to purchase online]. Unfortunately I can't get my hands on Matte Varnish either, and I'm very doubtful of the alternative my sister says there is in Office|Home Depot..... Pray for me, cause I really want to try doll repainting T^T
A little tip might be to use Matte Medium for most of the layers of sealant, it'll supposedly give you a much better tooth to the vinyl. Then using the matte varnish for your final sealant layers, after you're done with the coloring, to smooth it out so the tooth doesn't show as much.
gorgeous repaint dollightfully!!💖💖💖 haunted is my favorite mh line too!! and i've always wanted a haunted rochelle but she's sooo rare!😭

It's been 15+ yrs since I've done faceups. Better use a donor doll first. Thank for sharing. 💙🙏🏽💜
I kinda think she looks nice even without eyebrows
I thought that too! Haha
Dollightful
I love you for this! I live in an apartment with no individual entrance, so using MSC is a HUGE pain!! It's nice to know there are options out there, even if they aren't as good
I cannot get MSC where I live, and when I order it online it is well over $30 CAD. So I am trying other spray on varnishes. There is some viable options available, I have just not tried them all. Also I need to do more coats.
Good luck! Let us know if you find another good alternative.
hello girls.lm also canadian girl and super clear is soooo hard to find.for now l order on amazon Testors its not expensive but shipping really is.l did some research and one girl also canadian told me she tried Krylon clear matte and its great.its easier to find and not expensive. so l will give it a try .hope that helps
l do apologize for that.didnt realize.
Testors Dullcote WORKS!
WELL!
You can get it at micheals art supply stores in the hobby model section, its 6.99 and if you search micheals coupons online you can get on every single day for 40% regular priced items.
your channel is so soothing! i just love to watch when stressed, or any time for that matter
I've learned that if you dust on baby pouder on a dolls face it is easier to draw on.😆Also good job!
I love how you make these dolls so full of personality!!
I've always used clear matte spray paint as a sealant for all of my customs, perhaps could you make a video trying it out too?
Nigel Kronkberry when I sprayed my vinyl face it became sticky and glossy but the plastic body came out great. Do you coat the vinyl with another sealant first?
Most of the fashion dolls have soft vinyl heads and most of the sealants make them glossy and sticy on them. Msc or u sing a matte varnish with an airbrush are probably the very best options
I tried Krylon a long time ago, and my doll became sticky. What brand have you tried? Everything is worth a shot!
Dollightful I've known of people using Vallejo clear varnish for the MH dolls. It surprised me it worked for them not having tooth or anything like with MSC. I haven't tried myself but seems to be a cheaper option (not sure if it's less toxic than MSC being a spray aswell tho...)
FiReAn see doin to get it in the morning or
You're amazing!
I’d like to know about this
Hola! Tambien soy de Colombia y quería saber cual es la marca que usas, compre un sellante, pero deja todo demasiado brillante y no funciona bien ;;;;;
Y cómo se llama? Yo soy de Chile y me gustaría empezar a customizar muñecas pero dudo que encuentre msc acá
I've never been the biggest fan of Rochelle's sculpt, but I really like what you did with her!
did anyone stay intell the vary end the cat is sooooooo cute.
Pier williams-flack so cute
Pier williams-flack yep haha
Pier williams-flack it's soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo cute! I saw it too :)
Artist tiger lily 562 soooo sorry for your loss😞 I know how you feel, one time my Nana's cat got run over by a car😭
Your videos are so awesome can't wait for more😍😍
Thank you Callista :D ❤
Dollightful No problem ❤ hey are you going to do a face reveal ever? just wondering😂❤❤
Callista Smither I was thinking of doing a face reveal/FAQ for 100,000, but that seems to be approaching too quickly!;; (lucky me! Hehe)
haha well I'm sure ur beautiful, just Like your talents. keep up the good work on the dolls😘😍❤❤❤
Dollightful You don't have to. I quite enjoy you having be a mysterious pair of hands.
I hope dollightful continues to make lots of videos, they are so helpful as well as fun to watch!
Glad to hear it! Thank you :D
"I'm not using Mr Super Clear this time"

Underrated comment
I’ve been using it as a sealant since I can’t afford a ventilation mask for MSC and it’s been doing a good job for me
Rochelle's new face is so pretty!
I might have to try this method sometime.
I'm wondering if using Mod Podge would also work for one of your projects?
I've heard some pretty bad things about Mod Podge
ive binge watched like all of your videos because theyre just so interesting!!
Good to know, thank you for commenting!
Testors Dull Cote, that's what it's called
Corpse Kun is it toxic?
But when you know how to use it, in my opinion it's almost perfect alternative for MSC and airbrush sealants.
yah know you should make a life vlog..of your cat, you or anything you can vlog! that would me cool
i think your fine with anything actually your GREAT at everything from dolls to repainting to art! your my most favorite artist
I am going to do some Steven Universe custom dolls for a friend.Do you all think the pencils would work on a fully painted face?
Clod As long as there is another coat of MSC or another sealer, I think it would be fine.
Thanks!
Clod Just make sure that you use watercolor pencils. Oil based pencils would make your piece permanently sticky. Best of luck!
Great advise!
GOOD LUCK!!
I have tried mod podge with a little cornstarch and it works pretty well! The only draw back is that the more layers you apply it looks very gritty on the face, but I think if you water it down it would work a little better! I really suggest trying it +dollightful!
the haunted Twyla is my all time favorite MH doll
that dewy finish loookkks soooo fressssshhhhhhhhhh and very skin like!!!! 🥰😍😍
I AM IN LOVE!
Please do a face reveal one day! Maybe 1M subs?
Shiro Chan You can already see what she looks like, if you really want to 😕
LilChikyChan O.o Where?
Shiro Chan She actually revealed her face on Instagram and on her website
Nigel Kronkberry Oh, thanks!
Hehe it's true! I'm on instagram. I might do a reveal on the channel eventually, when I get around to an FAQ video.
wtf even if it was more difficult to you, you did an amazing doll, I can even understand how you did it xDD you are such a talented artist, I can't believe it lmao
Nicolle's Dreams uses Liquitex-brand brush-on sealants, you might give those if you're looking for a non-toxic alternative.
I've seen her use it with an airbrush before, but I don't have an airbrush, hehe.
Really cool
maybe the varnish tooth/pencil problems are because you watered it down so much?
Cloud King it would make it a lot shinier, as opposed to more matte
Cloud King I think a lot of the shinyness and lack of tooth is caused by the sponge/brush application - you're applying thicker layers in general. Even MSC will get shiny if you overspray. Much of the tooth comes from how the sealant is atomized when sprayed from an airbrush or can.
I didn't know it was the spraying action that gives it tooth! Thank you for sharing that!
I may have to look into msc one day when I have more money but for now I picked up a couple different sprays & I plan to do my first custom once my watercolor pencils and Venus arrive
0:25 me and my friend when we see the ppl we hate in school
I am so grateful you did this! Me and a friend are just starting out and we were talking about alternatives to MSC just yesterday! Thank you
this doll had many firsts, from first time not using MSC to first place in worst eyebrows XD also i think MSC looks better so when i begin i will get MSC
True, haha.
I've done doll customizing in the past, and I normally use acrylic paint only, and I end up taking a lot of time for drying. I think being the resources I use, Mr. Super clear is going to be my new number 2 option😁
are there other non-toxic alternatives for msc other than this?
theres liguitex matte medium witch is what i use it provides better 'tooth' then duraclear
im glad you did this. i want to customize a doll but im worried about the fumes from MSC
She looks dewy like the Kpop idols do sometimes
Agreed, hehe
Dollightful u inspire me so much
i don't know why but this is my favourite doll you have made...
I think one of her eyes is a little more closed than the other eye lol.
Simone Willets Ya it is.
Eh close enough. Haha
Dollightful yep, I guess so, I really like the end result tho haha.
Dollightful hi I love your dolls
Oops
I'm glad to see you've done a video on trying a different alternative from MSC [I can't get from where I live, and I don't have the freedom to purchase online]. Unfortunately I can't get my hands on Matte Varnish either, and I'm very doubtful of the alternative my sister says there is in Office|Home Depot.....
Pray for me, cause I really want to try doll repainting T^T
Pretty 😍
thanks for the compairson, this is actually my favorite faceup of yours i think! those eyebrows are to die for!
This kinda hurt to watch. When it wasn't working as well as super clean I hid my eyes. Lol. But it turned out pretty good for experimenting!
It was rather frustrating for most of the process. Haha
Dollightful can you triy liqued tex matte varnsh
Dollightful I probably would have rage quit half way through. lmao
rochelle’s plastic is just such a wonderful design. if i ever get my hands on a rochelle i need to do a faceup on her.
Watching these older videos is so strange
A little tip might be to use Matte Medium for most of the layers of sealant, it'll supposedly give you a much better tooth to the vinyl. Then using the matte varnish for your final sealant layers, after you're done with the coloring, to smooth it out so the tooth doesn't show as much.
