As a recent convert to Live after a decade of Studio One , had I seen a video like this years ago, I would have been on Live time agi . Thanks a ton.

One of the ebst tutorials i ahve seen. Stuck to the topic without being overwhelming but added in enough details to extend my recording skills. Awesome, thanks!

A difficult but powerful paradigm --- the first test is just figuring out what you CAN and CANNOT do in each "view" and tutorials like these HELP ALOT. Still need to do it yourself to get the hang of it, but damn, its taking me FOREVER !!!! -- i come from the synth workstation buttons and faders and 1/4" plugs in rackmount equip days... This Computer DAW (with installed plugins on megadrives) to USB (shit with rubber pads) paradigm is damaging my neurons.

There are just a few Ableton experts on RUclips who have a talent for really explaining how you do things. Far more often, what we see when we get an Ableton "hot-to", or tutorial video on a given topic is the creator FLYING THROUGH how to do something in a way that does NOT break down the steps so that someone who's struggling could actually understand it and be helped by the video. Basically, it's a frustrating experience because it's like being taken to the top of a ski slope and having the instructor smile and say "Watch, this is how you do it!" before just tearing off down the hill and leaving you stranded, confused and feeling like giving up. This creator actually EXPLAINS things, and that's why the video is helpful and valuable. MORE LIKE THIS!

This is nice, I learned more methods than I thought were possible for bringing stuff from Session View to Arrangement View. I do the last method, but with 1 bar count-in (crazy, I know) and I map the scene keys with number keys to press instead of clicking them; these mapped keys can be pressed while recording from arrangement view.

Yes, sketching in session view is by far the best way to create more options that can be previewed and shuffled in order to find new combinations. Then going to arrangement to ARRANGE and SONG Form is the way to go. Then exporting stems AND going back to session in order to perform, even live loop.

Just when I thought I saw the best explanation of this workflow I come across this!!! & this was the workflow that I was looking for when I first started learning about AL!!! Now I just need to get comfortable with using stems for stage!!! I’m getting comfortable with session view for stage for just treating it as a percussionist but I want to be comfortable with both sides!!!

It took me half a day to find this information. Thank You! However: Chat GPT 4.0 outright lied to me (and insisted over and over), telling me that NI Maschine can do this too. Maschine software is a total joke.

I can edit a track and go back to the view session, or several tracks at once and go back to the view session, and what to do with a song that has 2 bpm in the view session?

I wish there was a way to use session view and arrangement at the same time for livelooping. For now I'm using the Looper plugin, but it doesn't record it in arrangement view. Then you have BINK Looper but this only works in session view. Imagine doing everything in arrangement view where you see the recording of your liveloop and when you're done, it instantly pastes the correct amount of bars in arrangement view so that you can see and change the length in arrangement view in real-time.

How do I record my clips (scenes) in the master chain IN TIME? As soon as I select a different clip, the audio changes and starts playing immediately instead of waiting until the next bar. You can get close when pressing play on each clip at the right time, and of course you can correct it in the arrangement view later. But how do you record each clip in time in session view?

Iam switching Daws to Pro Tools to get my hands on their Sketch module. This Ableton approach is primitive for version 12. I can’t believe Ableton developed this session view module just to have Pro Tools Sketch wip their butt.

I used to be able to have 3 drum clips in 1 track and record an automation to change from one clip to another to fit with the guitar riffs I'm recording, in an older version of ableton. It was so simple. Now that I have upgraded I can't find any way to do this and it's made this program essentially useless for me. Why can't I record automations on the track I've used to write drums in session mode

I am curious to see if this can work in a setup where I am also playing live vst synths that have to be armed in the mixer to be able to receive midi data. Is there a way where the session view can be recorded into their channels while I am recording these plugin synths that are also affected by clip automation etc... Do you know if this is possible?

  • @glyndwr15

I don't understand why there isn't a drop down menu in arrangement view on each track where you can simply select from the clips that are already on that track in session view. To a long time FL user, this is really illogical.
