    The journey to getting better at fast alternate picking after 14 years of doing it wrong! Huge props to Troy Grady for putting in the work to provide insight on how shredders pick fast. Thanks to his Cracking The Code series, I've begun to get some basic speed, and I'm sharing that process with you today. For a deeper dive into this, please check out his site/channels.

    Can totally relate to your picking problems. While my legato has improved quite a bit over the last year, my alternate picking got even worse. I will try to tackle the issue once again with your video. Cheers man!

    Thanks for putting this out. I realized about three months ago that my "alternate picking" was really just economy picking. I had to learn this myself and it's killing me. I realized that i couldn't do it going up the strings but I instinctively did it going down. It was a total mindfuck and it reminded me of rage quitting Dark Souls

    I would check out Chris Brooks’ neoclassical speed strategies, it might change your mind about the downward pick slant. He goes super in depth on Yngwie’s picking style and it honestly changed the whole way I look at alternate picking

    Hey man, just discovered your channel and I like the approach, style and delivery of your lessons. The point that I'd like to make, and it's something I'm really focusing on now is that picking fast is only useful if your left hand and overall hand synchronisation is up there to match it. At speed, it's easy to pick when the fretting hand is in transit, muting the note. That fast, but clean, perfectly synchronised movement, where the fretting hand is planted already, before the pick strikes and moves through. On a single string, I find this harder descending like 4-3-2-1, where I'm effectively removing each finger on my left hand. As I increase the speed I eventually just get 4 mutes in a row! Final point. High gain tone makes this more forgiving. You can be a little off, and the note still rings out ok. On a clean tone, there's nowhere to hide!

    I use DWPS. It feels more natural than UWPS because you need to beat gravity when you do first up stroke. But Andy James and Jason Richardson uses UWPS. Also this technique and pattern only works for even note string groupings. If you play odd note groupings, then you need to do economy picking or alternate + pull / hammer the last odd note of that string (Yngwie does that way).

      I generally just noodle or play for fun, but in the case of alternate picking, I had to get more focused to make any progress. I’d say pick 1 pattern (or 2 so you don’t get bored) and just run that for 45-60 mins, making mistakes, and trying to analyze what is right/wrong. Do this every day without skipping any days. It’s painful and not fun, but eventually you make some progress and it becomes less painful. No skip days is key for me, hope that helps!

    Alternate picking is what I've been doing for most of my years (a lot of years unfortunately) playing guitar. I'm still not a shredder by any means but alternate picking seems pretty natural to me. Economy picking, on the other hand, is a total mindfuck. I can't seem to get that mechanic to work at all.

    • @clinttustin
      @clinttustin  3 года назад +2

      If you’re good at alternate picking, that’s a win

    • @remyzsacka8670

    • @majesticpbjcat7707
      @majesticpbjcat7707 3 года назад

      Seems odd to me that economy picking would be more natural to some people than alternate. Alternate is just very basic while economy is a more difficult mechanic. I guess I assumed that most guitar players, generally, would learn alternate picking pretty early on and that economy is more of an intermediate to advanced technique. I wish I could get it, but I'm just having so much trouble with it. Very frustrating

    • @remyzsacka8670

      @@majesticpbjcat7707 I don’t know that’s just the way it is I obviously got basic alternate picking first but for fast scale runs economy picking always came first as I couldn’t go faster by alternate picking

    • @kirandisley6288
      @kirandisley6288 3 года назад

      I do some kind of circle movement with my thumb and index finger finger along with downward pick slanting when it comes to economy picking 3 notes per string ascending. I just saw yngwie would do something like that when he did fast three note per string runs, and tried it out. It seems to make economy picking “click” for me and felt like I could glide over the strings with minimal effort
