450 degrees C is a high enough temperature to change the temper of the bolts..... You are basically annealing them, changing their characteristics and weakening them, that may not be critical for some bolts, but in this application it's not great advice as these fixings are part of the braking system and have a specific torque setting.
With every respect mate not so, it's my understanding to anneal metal it needs to be over 800 degrees and go non-magnetic, then cool slowly and naturally... heating this way and quenching doesn't anneal them, followed this advice from the blacksmith channels, and it's always worked pretty well.
@@Moonfleet41 A full anneal yes... but there is also 'Process Annealing', this starts at around 260 degrees C and up to 760 degrees C depending on the steel alloy. The process of hardening and tempering of steel is easily affected by further heating and cooling cycles and depending on how the heating and cooling is applied this can soften or harden the material changing the design characteristics of steel. The point is that on a safety critical fastener you no longer be sure that it will perform as intended. There are many different alloys of steel but most steels can lose up to 50% of their strength in the 400 - 500 degree C range.

All hail the beastie's rescue, from it's cruising the carpet scene, bushes & bearings, fine fettle indeed, in crevices seldom clean. But their engineers, they saw this day, & they knew that grit is nasty, so it was locked away, from the light of day, inside a rubbery pasty. Triumph Hinkley eh? - those boys certainly knew how to throw a boat over a hedge. Merry Xmas : )
I really debated picking up a YSS rear shock for mine this summer. I'm going to see how she goes and may invest in one after the next riding season. Great value if you are able to invest the $$$ i think. Merry Christmas to you both you and Pen.
Hey buddy.. Yeah, they are a really great value item.. but it does depend on the bike you're putting it on.. on this Triumph and maybe a Suzuki Bandit, they are a certain improvement, but on maybe a Yamaha R1, they'd probably not be much better that the factory shock as long as it's healthy..! Have a wonderful Christmas too sir, and thank you for your awesome support.. D&Pxx
I am looking one of this shock for my FJR 1300 ,but there is 2 part numbers ,one with standard spring ,and one with heavy duty spring and i dont know witch one i need ,any idea please? do you think the heavy duty spring will be to much hard ? i am 80kg and my pillion 65kg many thanks
With the weight of yourself and pillion i would say that the regular standard spring would be more then enough.. but i have not fitted one to an FJR myself... so perhaps double check for advice with the supplier..! Good luck with it.

Loving each ep of the build Del! Only nitpick is at 5:40, why didn't you clean up that rusty old screw near the sprocket. The whole build is immaculate otherwise. Keep em coming!
Great vid fella, Jsut started watching again after a few years. Loved the oil quenching. Just wondered if this needs further treatment like a surface oiling in future or whether it will protect against rust for a few years. Also any ideas whether this adversely affects the structural strength of the bolt or should this be tempered? Do you know if there are any benefits apart from cost to using used oil as opposed to fresh oil? Cheers
Cealn fresh golden oil gives a yellow tinted shiny finish, carbon laden sump oil gives the black silky finish, and clear oil like Baby oil gives no colour change, and you can buff them up too.. 'Oil bluing' causes no issues as you're not getting the metal hot enough to cause any changes..!

Ha ha yeah, "must try harder".. im gonna do thos a lot more often now, so ill make a proper deep oil can i can dump the item right into..had to open the window for this one..Doh..! Have a Merry Christmas too sir, and thanks for your support..
These are great rebuild vids! Do you have any ‘secret’ alternative to the heat & oil quench process that leaves a bright finish? I try to replace with stainless but thats only possible with ordinary bolts etc. For special bolts would you try a home plating kit or just rely on clear lacquer etc? Happy Christmas to you both.
Try quenching in baby oil, being clear to wont burn any carbon into the surface.. but the treatment wont last as long... carbon laden sump oil lasts best.!
Hope you and Penny have a great Christmas Del. Don’t know what kind of rules you guys are living with down there but have a good one and stay safe both of you.

Hey Del, I see you always use YSS when you need a shock. I am wondering if you have an opinion on YSS vs. Hagon? I got a YSS for my bike a few years back after hearing about them on one of your videos. They are good quality shocks!
The YSS are indeed good quality shocks mate, but i don't "always" use them, i have with this project, but my T120 Bonneville has Fox Shocks, my Kawasaki Streetfighter build has a Nitron shock, and the Dyna wide glide got treated to Ohlins.. i just go with what i can afford for each given project according to budget.. The very best value for money of all is always TEC shocks and ive used those on several projects... but unfortunately i have never used Hagon shocks myself, nor had them on a bike ive bought,, so i can't really comment on ho good they are mate.. they do have a good reputation though.
@@Moonfleet41 Thanks for the reply! Yeah sorry, I guess I shouldn't have said always but did know you were a fan of the YSS. Not sure if the TEC shocks are available in the U.S. but I'll have a look.
Hi del love the video doing good progress so far can't wait to see her done. I have a question why did you hear the bolt up and dip it in oil and how long will it stay black for ? Say hi to penny and I hope you both are well and safe 👍👍
Hi mate, it's a simple ancient technique or process called oil burning, or blueing, you simply heat to about 400c and quench in oil, it embeds the oil in to the surface, or micro-structure, of the metal, which waterproofs and protects it, you can use clean oil, which gives a golden finish to bright silver steel, or you can use black sump oil which because it contains so much carbon, gives you that black finish, and it lasts about a couple of years in daily weather, but if you keep it clean then like any metal surface it'll stay in shape! Merry Christmas to you too, and a safe and happy New Year!
@@Moonfleet41 Nice! There are also commercial lubricants, such as Lock-Ease which contain graphite, that would also work in the place of dirty engine oil. Arco once made an engine oil that contained graphite as an extreme pressure ingredient, and today there is Krex Graphite Engine Lubricant sold as an oil additive.
Same to you mate, give our love and hugs to the family, we'll look forward to 2021 and a brighter future, look forward to seeing you then, we'll soon be back out to play, D&Px
You've mentioned annealing material in the past and how it softens the metal, isn't heating these bolts up the way you've illustrated doing the same thing? I'm just thinking from a safety point of view that weakening bolts is probably a bad thing ey
Annealing is a specific process Dan, heat to bright cheery red which is about 850c, the metal goes non magnetic, then let it cool as slowly as possible.. and that will anneal it... but this process is totally different, you only heat to between 400 / 450c, until the metal just starts to show a change in colour, once you see a very dark dull red, then quench it quickly in oil... it doesn't alter the molecular structure like annealing does, it just burns the oil into the surface micro structure of the steel and as such weatherproofs it... Its a process that goes back thousands of years, and medieval weapons and armour were weatherproofed this way, even the Romans did it... check it out mate, it's something the blacksmith channels do all the time.

Which one yss shock in your case? I mean in catalogue list there are for Triumph classic triples :mz456-345TRL-06 or mz456-340TRL -16 or mz366-340TRL-16
Great stuff del. you and penny have a great christmas and beter new year..

Hello Mike, how wonderful to hear from you, and great to hear you got on the bikes, came back safe albeit a little cold!! Thank you so much for your kind wishes, you're right, it has been a very challenging year and it looks like the beginning of next will be the same, but like you, we're looking forward to day when we can get back to some kind of normal and people be safe... with the amazing support we get, we've been able to keep the videos rolling, and indeed, we will be posting up a video today, so you can kick back, grab a beer and enjoy some garage action! Happy Christmas Del and Penny, great videos, love this project
Thank you! You too mate, keep safe and well and enjoy Christmas!
Nice one! It's like therapy to watch all these parts getting greased up. Good choice getting a new shock, even when new these shocks were quite basic. I'm running a Hagon in the rear, probably similar quality and performance as YSS but don't know for sure, same price range at least :)
Looking forward to the rest!
Merry Christmas 🎅
Merry Christmas too mate, thank you for your support this year!
Definitely a big video this one Del and so interesting how you make it fit back together so well. A lovely clean job mate. I love this project so much. Kind regards.
Many thanks buddy, it was a very long day, and an even longer day to edit... 16hrs work in total, so it's really great that it's appreciated, the next one is even more so, I'm into my second day of editing it now, it's a proper monster and should be online Xmas Day just after lunch! Thanks, you too mate, what a strange year it's been, let's have a good Xmas and underline it.
D&Pxx
Looking good! 👍
Merry Christmas to you and Penny!!
Thank you Harold, it's good to hear from oyu sir, and wishing you the very same, have a great Christmas, and a keep safe new year. D&Pxx
I have to say I'm getting excited.. it's coming together very nicely del 👍
Thanks 👍
I am looking one of this shock for my FJR 1300 ,but there is 2 part numbers ,one with standard spring ,and one with heavy duty spring and i dont know witch one i need ,any idea please?
do you think the heavy duty spring will be to much hard ? i am 80kg and my pillion 65kg
many thanks
With the weight of yourself and pillion i would say that the regular standard spring would be more then enough.. but i have not fitted one to an FJR myself... so perhaps double check for advice with the supplier..! Good luck with it.

Now I can like it ., did stop it twice though ☺️ .

@@Moonfleet41 it's got me thinking I might replace the old one on the CBR which has an external oil cylinder.
Loving each ep of the build Del! Only nitpick is at 5:40, why didn't you clean up that rusty old screw near the sprocket. The whole build is immaculate otherwise. Keep em coming!
What screw mate? Don't know which one you mean!
@@Moonfleet41 there's one at the 7 o'clock mark below the sprocket
@@Moonfleet41 nice. Cheers

OOooo pretty ;-) It's coming together nicely. Cheers :-)
Yeah, Posh Ainit.? i often questioned the expense, and with a build budget slowly losing control, maybe i could have gotten a cheaper rear shock.. but seeing it now in place, it all makes sense..! Stay safe both of you, strangest Christmas ever..! D&Pxx

Nice trick with the magnetic socket at 13:43 . How did you magnetize the socket?
Not magnetic mate, it was just gravity! Just dropped the big nut in there and carefully fed it in to the bolt, but I do have a set of socket magnets, you can buy them from Sealey, I'll show them in a future video.
@@Moonfleet41 It sure looked like magnetism! I could have used that trick several times, recently, to shorten a long tedious repair chore. I'm looking forward to your Sealy video. Meanwhile, Merriness and Happiness to you and Production Director Penny.

Why did you go for a YSS ? Any reason in particular? I’m living in TH where it’s produced and thinking of putting it on my T120. Just have no idea if’s any good, thanks.
Very good suspension!
Delboy's Garage better than Tac one?
@@petetxul6477 What is 'tac'?
Delboy's Garage tac or tec brand. Sorry I might remember incorrectly. The company that makes the rebel exhaust you put on your T120. I think I also saw you mounting their front suspension on your bike.
@@petetxul6477 These shocks are a grade up from the TEC shocks, a lot more money, and also TEC don't make a monoshock, only twin shocks!

I’ve been searching for this video. Did you engineer the mono shock conversion or is it a kit I can buy for my T120?

Always fun when the shiny bits start going back on!
the first time i have watched a video and it say no views
Great choice of shock , love what you've done so far 😎
Looks like ya Xmas came a few days early mate,👍👍
Interesting will have to look into it more, looks like a good finish for older bikes if you can’t afford to replace/re-plate the bolts
Hi Del, how would you rate the yss shocks for there price.
Hi John. Well they're good shocks, but they are expensive.!
@Delboy's Garage not compared to nitron which you put on the zx7r👍
so Del, what are you going to make with that old chain? :D
