I acquired a YSS shock for my V-Strom, and being an idiot as well, I thought I urgently needed the one with the external reservoir. The thing took a long time to get from Thailand to the Netherlands and when it got here riding season already started, so I was in no hurry to tackle the job. When I finally started the job the orientation of the line for the preload adjuster was opposite the line for the reservoir making it impossible to mount the d... thing. Luckily I came across your video and you showed me that the preload adjuster ring is a loose part once the tension of the spring is removed. So I concocted a construction from luggage straps and my shop jack (don't do this at home) to release the tension from the spring so I could turn the preload adjuster ring and succeeded in mounting the whole thing without much fuss. Thank you very much for making this video.

I ordered the shock from a distributor in the Netherlands, and they placed the order in Thailand. I gave them my weight and an estimate of the luggage I take while traveling. I haven't got a clue about the spring rate. I'm 80 kg and carry about 30 kilograms of luggage at max.

As a true mechanical idiot I am impressed by your skills. I still manage to drop essential parts into inaccessible places on the bike often. I found the original shock to be way too stiff at first but as an idiot I simply went 3 preload adjustments lower on the standard shock and it has been ok ever since. Even though I am way overweight it doesn’t bottom out. Great to see you out and about riding again.
I ordered a Touratech for my current favorite bike, and was very explicit in making sure THEY installed the spring (and that it was the right one for my weight). Well done on getting the job complete.
I just had a YSS shock fail on my 500X. The bottom shock mount broke in half and destroyed the damping adjuster as well. The quality control at YSS is lucky dip at best.
Agree. I bought a YSS shock and fork kit for a CRF300L and am quite disappointed. The rear shock fades quickly when riding off-road and the cartridge kit doesn’t come with any of the YSS special tools needed for installation or instructions and if you install the kit yourself they void the warranty. I would not recommend their products.
I put Yss on a yammy roadstar. I ordered correct spring weight for me and partner and it is fantastic. I've got 50 years riding and my missus does big miles on the back also. She reckons its more comfortable than my goldwing and I agree. Set up properly they are fantastic and won't injure the bank balance much at all.👍👍👍
I watched Biker Bits video last week where they changed a shock spring on a KLR. Frightening to watch with the so called designed tool. Yours is so much safer. Clever what you have done.
Best seek out your local chapter of IASSG (Idiots Aftermarket Suspension Support Group); we meet every second Tuesday - it helps. Beware though, if IAESSG (Idiots Aftermarket Exhaust System Support Group) is also holding a meeting, they eat all the cookies and make a hell of a racket!
A mistake that is all too common me thinks. I put a new Wilbers rear shock on my 1995 bike and the comprehensive ordering questions avoid that outcome. But you do pay more for the privilege! Super job on the rig. 👍
I wonder if the YSS shocks have different valving for each spring rate. Supposedly, when u change spring rate, the valving needs to be adjusted as well.

I am a huge fan. You got me into making a RUclips channel. I install my rear shock with a sock on it. I always lubricate it first, then slide the sock onto the shock. There are two small holes on the side of the sock to spray lube into the sock and onto the shaft. I am a dirt rider. I can feel the changes in shock performance from day to day. I give it a fresh lube and wow. Just like new. So. I think a lot of people have early failure because they are not aware of all the gunk and dirt the shaft picks up. Or what kind of friction it causes. So. I thought I would throw my opinion out there. I have a weirdly sensitive set of legs as I was a pro snowboarder. I can feel how the grease seems to push off the rear shaft. I tend to use silicone lube now
I believe the rider sag should be measured with both feet on the pegs. Standing next to a pillar or wall helps you keep the bike upright while measuring.

Great video, I'm 115kg, ride solo with maybe 15kgs? luggage sometimes, wonder what spring rate to go for on a vstrom 650 yss shock, they seem to fit a 95nm spring to them but a heavier 110nm is available. Maybe the 95nm will be fine as in your case you had to go to a softer spring? Love your homemade spring compressor, necessity is the mother of invention!😄
Yep spring rate is important, but so is damping -- if your shock's damping is built to a certain spring rate you may need a revalve if you change the spring, in order to get the damping in the right range too...
Love your videos. Can you share you experience with the yas-56-180 150? Currently having issues on my cb500x suspension since im taking at least 200 kg load. This includes me a 100kg guy my soft panniers and tent kit plus a passanger.
here in brazil we do not have access to this product, we only have the original nc750x. I have a nc 2021, and I want to change these suspensions (rear and front). The yss that corrects more smoothly and the one with the 150 / 150 spring? So is the MZ456 with hydraulic preload the right one for the nc750?

We both have a bike so no two-up. The standard spring is good for my weight. The hydraulic preload adjustment can cope with luggage. So for me the std spring is the answer.

I installed YSS fully adjustable units front and rear on my RE Himalayan. Like a pro idiot, I put in the heaviest oil in the forks. The emulators fitted easily at that point, but when I realized the damping was too hard because of the oil, I took another weekend off to do the whole job again and of course the emulators took me a day of stuffing around to get right. Both front and rear took 3 months to bed in and now work amazingly well. So it was worth the frustration. Great vids and presentation, please keep up your wonderful work and I would like to consider saying where you are riding sometimes. Cheers.
Did you find out what the 150 and 180 means? I've seen several YSS, Ohlin and other springs for sale but I can't seem to find a correlation with the spring numbers to spring rates.
So what is the conclusion? You've returned to softer standard spring, that designed for 80kg man with small lugage. How does it work for 2-persons camping?
I’ve gone back to the heavier spring! It’s still a bit too firm but it’s ok. I don’t carry a pillion and we have decided we are too old and lazy for camping 😁

length adjustment? yeah right> if you manage to unscrew overly miniature nut, i couldn't, on both shocks i just managed to destroy the nut, so YSS -NOT COOL, next time you do it right, dont skimp on nuts and bolts, cause they are very importante!!! (needless to say i left them on factory setings, otherwise they can be prolonged +-10mm...) the twins in fabula are te302-400t-06al-38... otherwise they seem nice and more stiff than originals, but that may be cause they are not broken in yet, will see also if you dont have super star motorcycle model, be aware that probably several shocks models would be ok for your bike, so find a catalogue with measures and that is the most secure way not to buy wrong ones... for eg that model is for downtown 350, yet i used them for people 300 and so on
i had a rear spring so stiff on my ktm 690 it had zero preload on it. It needed a car spring compressor to remove it. Probably a 120kg plus spring or wrong spring for the shock. Anyway got a 90kg spring and happy days. Looking at getting a YSS for my mt09.

I ordered a nice kit from yss myself , a yellow color shocks without thinking more then my nose that the color might be different from my yellow monkey 😒 mistake were made here lol😂 I wonder if my brain can support the new color mismatch of the bike now

Sorry no. The 150 us supposed to be the same spring weight as standard. The 180 is the next stiffer.

i replaced my rear shock two years ago with a new yss shock and they aint cheap bits of kit.
