    I reckon that carnage was all the wind, not the fox.

    Emma just put the fleece on top of the young brassicas without the hoops. They will be alright that way until they are established.
    Reduce the hoop height and make sure all of the cover is secured tightly at the bottom. Use bricks or heavy stones to hold it down.

    Foxes dig for worms. No digging so maybe the wind was responsible. I’m in SE Kent and it’s been very breezy here!

    I think it might be birds, foxy would do a lot more digging, birds get under our netting sometimes and just trash the tops, you can lay fleece straight on top of most crops until they are established, you don't need hoops and the fleece will fit better. Things will get better, big licks from Colin the dog 🐶

    Just a friendly suggestion Emma.Spend half an hour one day collecting all your tools from around your plot and make a place to store them so you can find them when you need them?Sorry you had such a frustrating day,hopefully it gets better.Stay strong.

    If you look in the last video timestamp 2 12 onwards that net wasn't secure at the side and was blowing around. Looks like wind damage. Take a look at Charles Dowding for how to cover properly.

  • @siobhanpainter802
    @siobhanpainter802 6 месяцев назад +4

    It was probably the the wind rather than the fox, use tent peg to secure down the netting around the outside, or as someone else mentioned use coke bottles with bottom cut of as a cloche, but u will need a lot of bottles.

  • @andrewhead6267
    @andrewhead6267 6 месяцев назад +11

    When I plant out brassicas in early spring I put a bottle cloche over each. Using those litre bottles that have fizzy drinks, with the bottom cut off with a bread knife. Leave the tops off. I have no idea if it helps, but it looks like I know what I am doing!

    Emma loved the twirling scarecrow! Our was dressed in denim dungarees and a coat, stuffed with bubble wrap, then old leaking wellies, her name is Sheila and children go past and say hello! Sadly some people thought it was me working on the plot - note to self -must wear smarter clothes.

If you have a couple of old cd's ty string through them and ty to the wooden "arms" of your scare crow leaving a length of string hanging down below the jacket sleeves [like hands] so the disks can move and spin in the breeze hopefully frightening away more big birds, hope it helps.

    I feel your pain. My garden is the only one on my road that is not paved over, so it is a toilet for every cat in the area, every day it is a case of finding the deposits and no matter what I do( cardboard, sticks, netting or mulch)...they always find a place to leave a gift! I even grow catnip in a far corner to keep them away from the fruit and veg but nope. And don't get me started in slugs and snails😢 I am really enjoying your content please keep it up.

    I have days when everything seems to go wrong and it’s comforting to be reminded that I’m not alone. Einstein knocking the camera was hilarious… My pea structure with fleece blew down in the stormy winds yesterday , I didn’t have time to put it back up today so just put covered my pea seedlings with fleece and used washing line pegs to clip it to the side of container to protect them from pigeons and other big birds . Looking forward to working in garden this weekend while the weather is looking good (a little break from the rain) …I think I will invest in some pinwheels to keep birds away from veg , I have a cheap-ish fruit cage for my fruits, I need to put that back up after taking it down for the winter . Have a lovely Easter weekend Emma with your family!

    not a fox. wind. dont secure down with staples, lay some wood or get clips, also use better netting. if was a fox, it would be ripped, torn and tattered. look at the layout of the fleece, its in a nice even place, all in same direction. wind. funny how the fox hasnt gone for the uncovered beds. use nets to stop birds. cover them. think you could do with getting some better stuff to do the better job with. cheap and easy, debris netting and some stall or even plastic clips it would help alot.

    I absolutely feel your pain/frustration Emma. I’ve only had my plot a year and I’ve put so much time and effort into it, I planted 40 poppies I’d grown from seed to have them all eaten by the rabbits. I wouldn’t mind but I’ve supposedly made it rabbit proof!! Fortunately I’d oversown so I’ve got more to put out maybe when they’re a bit bigger and less appetising. Don’t let them win, keep going.

    So sorry Emma, but you'll have to find proper physical barriers. One thing use among other others is inverted hanging baskets. As a frame they work quite well. Another thing is to buy a roll of wire (chicken wire or similar), and make domes to sit over young plants so "foxy" and birds won't tread on them. Find anything you can. You need to be ruthless, feeding foxes is not really kind either, it's just that we like to make out foxes are like dogs, but they're wild animals. Just don't keep punching yourself, take it out on the Harry the scarecrow!. For pigeons a model Sparrow hawk works.

  • @lewisgardner1660

    Staples don’t work to well the tend to go through the fleece rather than hold it, try putting canes around the bed on top of the fleece and put some heavy rocks or bricks on top to hold down like Charlie Dowding does.

    I have to say you have cheered me up! 😂 I got my allotment in Feb, and spent last weekend putting up a lovely new plastic greenhouse and getting my seeds started. I went to my allotment this morning, and my green house and shed had been blown over in the wind yesterday, so all my seeds that were in the greenhouse were all over the floor, i could have cried!😢. I guess i should have expected it as it was only a plastic greenhouse, but I thought i had secured it well. I have a very exposed plot and have had to dig it into the ground to stop it happening again 😢However these are all just set backs and will just make us more determined to make it better!!! We can plant more seeds and we can make things more secure. It is a learning experience and it will make us better allotmenters 😊. I love Einstein, i hope i get some little birds visiting my plot too😊.

    Another option is to hammer fence post sized pieces of wood into each corner of your bed and one post in the centre of the long sides .these posts should be about 2 feet long .staple netting to the tops of each post .you could buy fine wire mesh to use instead of netting but this wont stop the cabbage whit or other bugs from causing trouble . Fine Wire mesh is a better option as you can staple it down the posts as well to make a wire fram that fox cannot lift up or off .you could still drape netting over the wire nesh to stop bugs

    Good morning Emma, may i suggest your husband has a wee into a bottle for you to pour around your beds, once a week should be enough unless it rains. My friends have found this actually works as you are marking your territory. This is guaranteed to work. Hope this helps. Regards Suzanne
