    4:58 Did this nigga just...get on the ground and STILL avoid that flurry of punches...FROM THE CORNER???
    What a sickening display of defensive ability, people always think that Tyson moment when he crouched down and avoided those punches was awesome, that doesn't have anything on this...

    I really respect everyone's commetns, but Pernell was a genius in the ring. He was defined as "unfindable" by boxing experts. It's one thing to punch and runaway, but to stand in front of someone and dodge a 10 punch combo?! He's in the boxing hall of fame for a reason, His defense is one in a million. Truly one of the greatest boxers to ever step in the ring.

    i get more joy out of seeing great defence than seeing KO's. Boxing is about hitting your opponent and there will always be big hitters, but seeing people with such amazing defence skills don't come along that often

    I love the behind the back rabbit punch from Pea at 2:01...lol!!!! Now that's a classic Old School trick. The old timers must have loved watching Pea back in the day for his variety of ancient boxing tricks: feinting, footwork, counterattacks, d....
    The only fighter today i see that fights close to Pea is Floyd Mayweather Jr.

  • @joevtr
    @joevtr 12 лет назад

    Agreed, boxing isn't about taking the biggest punch. Its about hitting and not getting hit. There are some boxers who are exceptional at "improvising" and boxing by "sight" rather than rhythm. These boxers are guys who express themselves in the ring, guys like naseem hamed in his early career, Pernell Whittaker, Emmanuel Augustus, two of the guys I mentioned may not be fundamentally the best boxers born but they were entertaining.

    Look, we're not here to fight about how boxing is better than MMA (or any other martial art) or how other martial arts are better than boxing. We're here to admire one of the greatest defensive geniuses ever. End of story.

    He is the master of defensive boxing. I loved the end where he was fighting trinidad and he just sat down and still was moving his head and getting out of the way. I hated him because he was so damn good that he was almost arrogant about it. But nobody can ever say he sucked. He was incredible and made other fighters look horrible. That is why people say it was a bad era for boxing. Because he was too brilliant for the other big named boxers to handle. Mad props for Pernell Whitaker.

    It really says something about Whittaker that he fought so many great or top notch fighters in his career, and with the exception of Trinidad in one of his last fights, he made them all a part of HIS highlight reel.
    He could be an ass at times, he had his problems, but he never got and may never get the full credit that he deserved. A true master of the Sweet Science.

    That was their style, not everyone plays by the book. Whitaker not only dominated his opposition, but he had some of the best accomplishments and resumes of the modern era, fought everyone and beat everyone until his addiction and age caught up with him. He's an All Time Great whether you like his style or not, same as Jones.

    A lot of people who don't know about boxing are completely ignorant of ring generalship and how it plays a big factor in fights. Willie Pep is probably the blueprint to this type of fighting, probably the first fighter to coin the hit and run technique. Once he said he would win a round without throwing a single punch, did it all by ring generalship, slipping and movement and made the other guy look stupid.

  • @DethStryque

    This is what was said:
    "Whitaker largely had his way with Chavez, running him into straight left hands, banging hard shots to his body and out-maneuvering him at every turn.
    How bad was the draw? A ringside poll conducted by The Ring magazine after the fight had 14 writers favoring Whitaker by an average margin of three points. Seven out of 10 newspapers - in Mexico, no less - agreed that Whitaker had been robbed."

    mca is from a small town called "JulioVilla"... face it, the dude went up against a Hall of Fame Legend, and those 88 wins went out the fucking window... once he started facing some real competition, he got Taylor by the skin of his teeth, got whipped by Frankie Randall and Whitaker really brought him down-to-earth...after that, it was officially over. Whitaker, on the other hand, gave hell to everybody he fought, tough til the end.

    Yes, I agree. If you jump around too much or run around you will get tired. He does not waste movement at all. He makes it all count for something and he pulls you out of position and hits his opponent back.

    That is Absurd!!! Boxing is an Art of emotive, physical intelligence thats why it is the hardest sport in the world, its just not about slugging & running you have to read the emotions of your opponent, your thinking all the time, strategy, tactics, thus changing all the time!!! sometimes you win/lose gaining experience for the next fight, then its the relearning process over again, i think of Boxing like the Bible your learnin summat new all the time.

    as great as pernell is, he's only got a few tricks defensively that worked amazingly well: foot movement and crazy head/upper body movement, and the occasional gloves up by the head. floyd can do it all, head movement, foot movement, better counter punching, and he can fight better off the ropes and in the pocket due to his philly shell defense. he's also quicker than pernell. they sparred before and floyd said it wasn't competitive, and b/c of those reasons I can see how it wouldn't be

    • @davelouie131
      @davelouie131 Год назад

      When Pernell was serious he could counter punch 🥊, like he did against Harold Brazier who beat a young Mickey WARD , and hence watch his 1992 fight against Rafael PINEDA who would later would give Zab Judah a tough fight in 2004. And Floyd also said his toughest fight would of been against Roberto Duran and Pernell Whitaker and he has said Pernell was the best body puncher in history. Floyd is like the 2007 and 2014 Toney Parker , prime Kwai Leonard and MICHAEL JORDAN was who was very athletic and skilled , Pernell Whitaker is like Kyrie Irving , Steph Curry and Kobe Bryant who was not as athletic as Jordan but he used more angles than Jordan with footwork and finesse. Roy Jones = Russell Westbrook and prime Derrick Rose.

    Whitaker was probably one of the top 10 fighters all time in the Lightweight Division. Maybe even #1, he was tall, long, quick, powerful, and smooth as ice.
    And great Title. How often do you see a ref allow a fighter to be so timid so long, he's so good at defense he doesn't even have to land to win the round, which isn't just based on punch counts.

  • @SalvyMic

    Dude, Duran and Chavez had very underrated defenses, especially Duran. Asides from having a great chin, Duran had very good defense in an infight, his biggest problem was against the outfighters like Hearns. Going into the Barkley fight, the announcers called Duran "a boxing master". Ward had good defense too.

    A combination of the two is best. That's why everyone loves Ali, because in his prime he'd do all the dodging and weaving and then land a dozen punches in a row. I quite enjoy watching this kind of bobbing and weaving though. It's very impressive to watch isn't it?

    When Pernell Whitaker retired his record was 39 wins, 4 loses, 1 draw, 1 no contest. The 2 notable names he lost to were Oscar De La Hoya and Felix Trinidad. His 1 draw was against Julio Cesar Chavez. Not knocking "sweet pea" cause he had skills out his ass but he never really beat a big name, always sorta fell short. Great fighter though with some of the most exciting fights.

    watching whitakers fights for the first time in a while and i think one of the best things that you honestly sometimes forget with sweet pea is that he was so great not only because of his godlike reflexes and defense, but the accuracy of his shots, you didnt usually see a whole lot of wide swings and misses (though that really wasn't what he was all about anyway.) But especially watching him when he was younger his accurate barrage of punches, like a pair of fencing swords almost.

    I know a lot of you probably don't watch MMA let alone the Diaz/Condit UFC fight over the weekend, but there are a lot of JERKOFFS who are comparing Condit's strategy to what Pernell did in the ring. Long story short, Condit won with "footwork" and "effective counter striking." After watching this highlight video of the AWESOME Pernell Whitaker, it's confirmed that those JERKOFFS don't know what the hell footwork and counter punching is.

    De la Hoya will only be remembered as a greater fighter by people who take a partial interest in boxing and haven't even heard of Whitaker other than in this fight.
    Anyone that knows the sport will recognise that a past prime Whitaker held his own against a prime De la Hoya. And as Larry Merchant said in the fight, that just shows you how great Whitaker must have been in his prime.

    They had to explain their rediculous scorecards somehow. They were either incompetent or corrupt or both.
    This was one of the worst robberies of all time. No one needs to look to the judges cards to know who won fights like Armstrong-Ambers II, Harada-Famechon, Lewis-Holyfied I, Fenech-Nelson I, Whitaker-Chavez. If you go by those scorecards you are disrespecting the sport because its decisions like that which kill the sport.
