A MUCH better way of opening the bottom is to wrap the bottom with a soft cloth (sock), using a vise grip to GENTLY squeeze the bottom on the long ends (to make the oval shape more of a circle), which releases the retainer clips. No prying, no damage to the seal, no ugly scratch marks (which retain dirt and can scratch you!). I hope this helps!

I’m about to do this. But squeeze the long ends to make it more circle? That makes it more oval

@@jesselevine0 The bottom is already oval-shaped, I imagine that squeezing the opposite wider ends would make it more circular overall. I don't think many people have vice grips lying around though

Much simpler is to use the provided slot in the bottom to insert a flat head screwdriver and firmly turn to release. See here; ruclips.net/video/UQuzPQ284Po/видео.html

Fantastic! You’ve just helped me to save my wife over £100. Getting the plug off the bottom was quite easy but getting the inside to come out was difficult. I was just about to give up on it and it moved out just a little. Then a further push brought it out easily. I’m glad I bought those precision screwdrivers now. It worked a treat! Once the innards is out, it only takes 3 or 4 seconds and back in the workings goes. Fixed! Wifey-kins is so chuffed!
    Thanks a million 😄❤️👍

Hi Peter, thanks for the video. However, having just fixed my Sonicare I can offer advice on how to open the device up, without damaging the base by gouging a screwdriver into it. Doing it your way risks breaking the seals integrity and therefore the waterproof properties the device. Anyway, you will notice that the base is oval. Wrap a cloth around the base, so that you can still see it, but then, using a large pair of pliers, or unadjustable wrench, gently squeeze the oval at its widest sides making so that it become more circular, and opening up. As you do this press the tip of the tooth brush (without the head!) downwards onto a hard surface. This will ease the mechanism out of the chamber. Once open, you will notice that the retaining tabs are not the ones you refer to at 1:38s but the tabs on the narrow side of the oval which engage into corresponding slots on the inside of the sheath. FYI my problem was that there was moisture on the inside causing the device to remain in its standby mode, with all the lights on (but not buzzing) which mean that battery life was shortened. I simply let it dry, blowing cool air over it, before the lights stayed out and the device began to operate properly again. When returning the mechanism to the chamber, oil the black rubber 'o' ring at the base and be sure that the seal at the top goes all the way in (you will see that there are two tiny offset slots in the chamber, where corresponding tabs on the top of the mechanism have to fit). This way the seal should be flush with the top of the chamber when you look at the reassembled toothbrush and stop moist getting in at the toothbrush head end. (my model refHX6950)

Mine the screw was not loose but found crusty toothpaste in the head area under the rubber seals. After cleaning that out it worked like a champ. The proper tool for opening something like a Sonicare toothbrush is a "spudger," a small plastic spatula that can open small electronic devices without damaging their soft plastic construction.

The primary problem these Sonicare toothbrushes have, is the main shaft that connects the end, brush side to the magnet assembly.Philips won't sell this part.I've exchanged 2 Sonicare toothbrushes under warranty, due to this problem. When it goes out of warranty,I guess I have to trash the toothbrush.

Peter thank you - you are a star. This is the kind of community self-help offering that we need more of. Why SHOULD we put up with built-in obsolescence and the general 'buy more, sucker' attitude, which serves short-term profit over and above the needs of the wider humanity. Actually I have been perfectly happy with the toothbrush - who knows, when the various other parts go wrong I may be able to carry on replacing them. Like the British Morris Minor car, which was apparently discontinued partly due to the fact that it was easily serviceable by the user and reliable enough to 'on and on'. I had this sneaky feeling that the Sonicare 'should' be repairable, but rather than search for a repair facility, found your post. Good stuff old chap!

Thank you! I found you can remove the cap by ringing the cap under hot water to soften the plastic. Then push firmly on the opposite end on a hard surface. Work it slowly by repeatedly heating the cap and pushing down. It pops off after 3 or 4 cycles. You may also apply silicone grease on the o ring when you put it back to avoid water seeping back in.

This problem is very common on this model and the HX6711/02. I have two of this particular model and one HX6711/02 and all three started having this problem after a year of use. I suggest that if you do take this part and tighten the loose screw, do what he suggest and apply super glue to prevent it from getting lose again because taking this thing apart too many time will cause it to not work. The charging port on the bottom has become so damage from repeated prying, it no longer sits down evenly. Also the LED light no longer align with the transparent plastic port that indicates that it is turned on and charging.

I have a Sonicare Essence that is not the same as your fancy brush. It is only a couple of years old and the battery no longer holds a charge. The toothbrush light just stays on when it is on the charger. It is a couple of years out of warranty. I may call Customer Service and "plead my case" and hopefully, I can get a coupon sent to me for another Sonicare Essence brush. My first Sonicare was a bit fancier than the Essence and it lasted over 15 years before the battery gave out. The current brush was in storage for a year and when I tried to charge it last week, the light on the brush flickered for about 10 seconds and then the light stayed constant with no charge. Obviously, the 12 months of non-use affected the two small batteries inside to not hold a charge. Trying to fix this by opening the brush without damaging it, doing some solder work and then buying two new batteries is just too much work and so I will just have to go and buy a new one and NEVER AGAIN put it in storage.

Thank you so much for your terrific video. Like some others, I put a big flat head screwdriver in the bottom slot and firmly turned. The whole unit popped out easily and the white outer plug stayed attached to the unit. I tightened the screw which didn't feel loose but it was loose. After a good tighten, the brush head was not wobbling and I pushed the unit into the case and pushed. It clicked right back to where it started and all is well. Thank you for saving me the price of a new unit. Your video was perfect. The whole repair took 10 minutes. Thank you and much appreciated.

Thanks for the video. I wasn’t sure how to get into the toothbrush but your instructions were perfect. My wife came to me this morning saying hers wouldn’t charge. Found out there was toothpaste slobber intrusion that made it down to the circuit board. I flushed it with distilled water and soft flux brush, then with 91% IPA to dry it out. Let it dry, tested it, charges and works great again.

Thanks so much for the tutorial. I just fixed my tooth brush. Used the super glue on the screw like others suggested so I don't have to do this again any time soon!

Thank you very much Peter, this video helped me completely! I have a different model than the one shown in the video, but having used a earlier model before, I know the concept inside is the same. I found a video about battery replacement on my Diamond Clean. I just needed to know how to take off the bottom since it's different. I used that along with this video and my problem is now solved.

Thanks for making this video. After watching it I was very hopeful I could fix my FlexCare brush, but after disassembling it I discovered the metal piece the screw screws into was actually broken. :-(

you may be able to find a replacement toothbrush on eBay that you could use for spare parts. I've seen them in the past for a few bucks. Might be worth a try. Good luck!

Mine doesn’t have a rubber base. The whole piece is solid plastic. Help?

Great idea. Great video, but where do you buy the replacement shaft? Can't seem to find one anywhere.

I tried this, and I tried one of the solutions suggested below around adjusting the coil positioning to be closer to the battery, but alas, after taking apart the entire head assembly I can see the point where the adjustment screw attaches has broken into two. Last resort: super glue! Will report back

Don't pry. Use a bigger flathead scredriver and insert it in the hole at the bottom and twist counterclockwise about a quarter turn. Then it slides out pretty easily.

All that buzzing for the sake of some threadlock. Very helpful. Pity the metal it screws into is so weak and fractures.
