    In this video I take care of a bunch of shop repairs, including fixing both of my broken Manfrotto Magic Arms (using a 50-cent brass nut and carriage bolt)! All in an effort to get back to the way I USED to film (when we were making episodes every week)! We also introduce OTO7, a robot built specifically for assisting with craft and film projects. :D

    It’s crazy to me, how many high-end, and otherwise high-quality tools have failure-modes that are seemingly intentional… designed to fail, and integrated into the because 99.9% of people aren’t craffy or determined enough to fix it on their own, leading to more sales, more failures, and so-on.
    LIVE TO DIY.
    DIY TO LIVE.

    • @JamesChurchill
      @JamesChurchill 10 месяцев назад +15

      It's intentional, but not quite for the reason you think. You can't make things indestructible, and if you make every part equally strong then when a failure inevitably occurs, it can be in a part that is difficult, expensive, or impossible to replace. So good engineers design for that failure, making specific parts weaker so that they'll sacrifice themselves first before a more expensive failure can occur. The knob on these magic arms is trivial to replace (or repair), but if the joint itself had been damaged the whole arm would have been junk.

    • @JeffJeffers0n
      @JeffJeffers0n 10 месяцев назад +10

      @@JamesChurchillthat makes no sense, your average person will not be doing a 'trivial' fix involving melting plastic and filing down metal nuts. Even if so, the repair will likely ware down again very soon. The entire design of that thing looks garbage based on the fact it uses plastic for any of its parts. It should be composed entirely of metalic pieces only, especially at the high price it's sold.

    • @trikepilot101
      @trikepilot101 10 месяцев назад +7

      @@JamesChurchill If that were the intent, it would be easy to remove the brass nut. It should be held by a set screw or two, not molded into the plastic.

    • @TealDobber
      @TealDobber 10 месяцев назад

      @@JeffJeffers0nnah, that does make some sense. None is an exaggeration.
      They may have decided to make the nut strip, instead of the handle crack or the shaft twist. Maybe it was I'll informed.
      On the other hand, making parts fail to improve sales is legit a thing. But, not always.
      Reminds me of when features are will work kn a model, but they spend extra to disable it, so you pay more for the one that doesn't have it disabled.
      I used to support some computers that shipped with colour displays that were disabled in the BIOS. Just a quick switch and you had a colour display. Saved hundreds of dollars.

    • @mattiasfagerlund
      @mattiasfagerlund 10 месяцев назад +3

      A new replacement knob seems to be $16 - not cheap but only 10% of an entire new arm. It wasn't the plastic that failed, so I don't really understand how replacing the plastic with metal would help...

    An OTO-7! That takes me back. I remember rummaging around in our basement storage room--old camping stuff, camera boxes, slide projectors, that kind of stuff. The OTO-7 didn't work; it had some big cracks in the plastic housing like it had been dropped or hit with a hammer or something. I started playing with it, alongside my action figures, because it had such an anthropomorphic design, like a movie robot.
    A couple days later my dad saw me playing with it and took it away, saying it wasn't for kids. I looked for it a few times, in the storage room, but never saw it again.
    I pretty much forgot all about that thing until now. Crazy!

    Get a mini split! ❤❤❤❤ I’ve been using them since seeing them in japan in 2004. Anywhere you’d use a window A/C… a mini split is so much better. So quiet, more powerful, and depending on which version, various air cleaning features, auto directional controls…. Not to mention they’re also heaters and dehumidifiers all in one. And they’re much more energy efficient than window A/Cs. Just make sure you mount the outside unit on a nice slab of cement to reduce vibration noise. ❤ Highly recommended!

    I put a 9k btu mini split, the smallest I could find, in a 220 sqft work area and it was way oversized. It had no problems getting the room cool but the humidity was terrible. 70 degrees at 70% still feels pretty gross. So I jad to run a large dehumidifier as well, which was pretty loud.
    This recent heat wave took out the minisplit so it was replaced with a 6k btu window shaker and the room is far more comfortable without needing to run a dehumidifier.
    If you do get a mini split and live some place hot like Florida, pull the insulation out from around the compressor. I am positive that is what killed mine with this ridiculous heat.

      Good to know this - thank you! I keep a dehumidifier running out there at all times, since I have so many paper/cardboard products hanging up and other items I don't want to get hot+humid.
      Really appreciate knowing t hat about the insulation around the compressor! Thank you for all this info!

    I can totally relate to getting too much footage. I never know what ill need so I end up capturing everything and going through the laborious task of trimming it all down. My last few project videos have had shot counts around 850 - 900 clips!

    • @TheCrafsMan
      @TheCrafsMan  10 месяцев назад +1

      That's SIGNIFICANT!
      The higher shot counts have caused me to stop renaming my footage (used to do that to every clip, the day of shooting). :| Are you also using Davinci?

    • @xyzcreate
      @xyzcreate 10 месяцев назад +1

      @@TheCrafsMan Yep I'm using DaVinci 16. I tried using Adobe Premiere but it kept crashing when I tried importing the footage. I suspect it couldn't handle the sheer number of clips lol. It's nice to know that you're not alone as I too have have also given up on naming my clips :)

    Wonderful video Crafsman! I would like to mention it you are fixing to apply heat from a torch to a nut or bolt, be extra double sure that it is not galvanized, or you will be causing lots of harmful vapors

    Great inspo!! Love how you replaced the screw and nut, I think I may need to do something similar to my wobbly barber chair. Also I 100% agree to the mini split! Got a double head 3ton installed last summer and it’s the best thing we’ve done! It’s way quieter than a window unit and more powerful. Ours was a bit pricey due to some needed electrical work, but totally worth it 👍

    Keep the old air conditioner, the smell of those is just exquisite.

  • @stevecorwin9541
    @stevecorwin9541 9 месяцев назад

    We used to have mini-split air conditioners. In the moderate humidity of southern California they would grow mildew inside, and the blower wheel would need to be removed for cleaning. From watching how-to videos here on RUclips I have the impression that's annual maintenance in Florida.
    If it's all humid where you are, make sure to find out how to clean the blower wheel before purchasing.

    I love my mini split so much! I know air conditioning is energy intensive, but the mini split keeps most of the excitement and noise outside and away from my sensitive ears so I can concentrate on death metal ;)

    My son has an "old robot" somewhere...I I think it's called Mindstorms from Legos, basically it's a Lego set but it's combined with electronics and it was from the early 2000s

    Loved this episode - might want to check to see if there are any firmware updates for OTTO7. Also, make sure he is plugged into a surge strip - you don't want any lighting to bring him to life like it did to Johnny5. xoxo
