⚠️ heads up to anyone using a diode laser. Goggles that block blue light will be ORANGE not green. Make sure to research the wavelength (it will be in NM) that your laser emits, and how much OD (optical density) is needed to protect from it! When wearing the goggles you shouldn’t see ANY blue. Stay safe!
Yeah, super confused by the goggles that came with my machine, but I confirmed with the company that they were the right kind. Even though the glasses are varied colors. Weaker 1.6watt laser came with green, and the stronger 10watt came with red, but both within the same wavelengths, and the old goggles are safe for the stronger laser.
Doesn't make much sense to me, but they're the guys that designed it, so I kinda have to put my trust in them.
@@MeatSim9 laser glasses cover a broad spectrum of light but different wavelengths will get different levels of optical density protection, and there’s usually a steep fall off. So green goggles might block some blue light but with a lower OD. laser glasses are supposed to come with a chart that shows the OD going up and down across the protected wavelengths. I think the minimum OD for my 10 watt was 4 or 5.
The glasses mine came with were the correct orange color but they didn’t have a nm and OD rating, only an impact rating. The glasses I purchased online have an OD of 7 for the 450 nm blue wavelength. I thought the laser companies would know what they’re talking about too but there seems to be a big disconnect between their engineering and their advertising/product support. The advertising for the laser I used shows it on a coffee table with a person and a dog staring at it w no eye protection as it engraves metal lol. The machine is really well made tho!
Yep, my buddy got a wicked laser a month before the store closed due to issues of changes in federal regulations. But the fool wanted to use his blue laser on his weed pipe. Thankfully he had goggles, but the next day he had a distinct sunburn on his face despite smoking at night due solely to his blue laser.
WOW. Kayakasaurus (and others!), I sincerely appreciate you taking the time to inform others.
The only color I've ever seen used in regards to laser safety is green, so I thought nothing of it! But since reading the comments, I've had my eyes opened.
I'm going to add this safety note to the pinned comment. Sincerely grateful, y'all.
The Craftsman is still going strong...... WOW..!! half a million subscribers.. You have come a long way my man.... Good job. Its been a while. Take care and keep climbing my friend...!!
DALE! :D
Mannn, I'd recognize that smile anywhere! :) So nice to hear from you, my friend. Glad you enjoyed this one!
You've been laser-engraving the love of crafs into our hearts for years. Thank you, Crafsman.
Awwwwww mannnn! :) Y'all are so kind!
It's hard to pinpoint what we enjoy the most - the "main" portion of your video, your "intro section" where you introduce the topic, or the random "snippet(s) of silliness" at the end... but, honestly, in the end, it doesn't really matter - it's all equally enjoyable, and makes our day a whole bunch better when its been "enhanced" by some of your video goodness. Keep on SteadyCraftin'!
I agree with all the above, but I must say my favorite is him making a design for a patch and/or sticker so we , his loyal fans, can unite out in the wild ! 😜
Reminds me of the line from Alice's Restaurant - "If 3 people got together & sang 'Alice's Restaurant', we'll have ourselves a movement!!!!"
Paraphrasing, but I love the thought of running into another "Crafsman Friend" out in the wild ! 😜
Now witness the firepower of this fully armed and operational crafstation!
LOL!!!!!
I actually resisted using a Star Wars clip in this one!!!!! Wanted to have it assembled and cut to the shot of "don't be too proud of this technological terror" (paraphrasing) but decided not to, because this is one of those videos I didn't want to risk getting copyright claimed. :)
@@TheCrafsMan totally understand wanting to avoid the copyright strikes. Possibly a way around it is animate or puppet with some figures to recreate/parody the scene? Either way, we know you have it in the offline "directors cut" :) 😎👍
@@botmaster2005 :D Thank you for the suggestions! It has been disheartening because satire, parody, and documentary/reporting purposes are all covered under Fair Use... but *RUclips* doesn't enforce that. Basically it's up to the intern or person handling copyright claim disputes for that company/property: They can easily hit "deny" and go on to the next one. RUclips only gets involved once it escalates a little, and that get scary because it can start to get into *strike* or lawyer territory. :/
Nice! I'm glad to see that you got the laser rocking. Man, that thing is way more powerful than my 10 Watt... Some would say it's twice as powerful. Thanks for the mention! This was fun. BTW, your cameraman... Ugh, I mean the camera person did a great job. That was quite a large variety of shots during the assembly section. It looked fantastic!!! Great video my friend!
Thank you so much, my friend! (And for that phone call too, which was so helpful!)
You have no idea how much the feedback means coming from you. And yesssssir, this was one of those times where my camerawoman really made it happen! (Being able to trade up between either focusing on doing the action, or running the camera, was a huge deal. Made it feel like less work, which I think resulted in getting way more shots than normal.)
@@TheCrafsMan It is a good way to go about it. She did a great job and so did you.
"That's just the engraving pass, which runs.... like a scalded dog." TCM may be a member of my family. Great video, CM. Makes me want to get one and laser everything in my house.
Oh, I wanna dance with somebody…. I wanna feel the heat with somebody…. Diggin the groove to the song…….
The production value on this is so insanely high.
Shop doll, the step bag presentation and dumps, etc etc etc. holy shit. Mad props 👑
8:15 - You can use little neodymium coin magnets as risers too, and when you need something like paper or flimsy plastic held down, you can use them on top too, so the airflow doesn’t blow the thing you’re cutting away. I have a honeycomb under my ancient FullSpectrum and I use those neo mags to hold down the stuff so it keeps it tight.
Slick!
Did a quick test to be sure the laser housing was indeed aluminum and not something ferrous (LOL! I pictured it moving along and the magnet clinging to it or something.)
We have plenty of little neodymium ones, so that's what I'll use. :D
Thanks as always, uncle PC!
@@TheCrafsMan Heck yeah. They’re especially useful if you’re cutting out decals or paper. I used mine to cut vinyl stickers and it works great at that. Leave a little residue though.
@@TheCrafsMan Lasers make nice customized cutting boards too.
@@Chef_PC Definitely helpful for testing some paper/cardstock materials! :) (Thinking about trying to pull off a physical paper animated character - like drawing the frames or animating on the computer, cutting them out, and using replacement style stop-motion animation.)
Shop baby is the scariest thing I ever seen in a Crafman vid.
Seeing a denim SC patch makes my 70s teen self all nostalgic. 😊✌🏼❤️ Have fun, stay safe: wear you some goggles xxx
I've been using a diode laser for several years now and was wondering when TheCrafsMan was going to get himself one. Wasn't sure if it would be a laser or microwave first. Looks like the laser won.
HAHAHA! :D Yep, the laser won out. ;)
Craftsman, glad to see God kept y'all safe during this bad weather. Prayers to all the families affected.
Thank you so much for the concern, my friend. Yes, we are truly grateful for His provisions, and praying for those affected.
Really appreciate this comment.
Glad you got the chance to use a laser cutter. However, PLEASE be careful with open air tabletop lasers. Without an enclosure that thing can be dangerous, especially if those "safety" glasses aren't actually rated for the laser you're using. Keep those eyes safe CraftsMan!
Thanks for looking out, buddy! We have an enclosure hopefully coming in, with intent to show it in use and basically do a video update about how important fume/smoke management is. Although I mentioned this about controlling smoke, I really feel like SHOWING it is far more effective.
All that being said, I'm super grateful for folks like you taking time to share your concern with folks like me who are new to this!
Welcome to the club. I've had my laser since the beginning of 2022 and it gets used constantly. I think you'll keep finding innovative ways to use it. Unless you've already discovered it, do a little digging on the "Norton White Tile" method.
Had to pause everything and watch your video. Again and again a pure source of pleasure. Now back to spinning vinyl.
My man Marc! Thank you so much for watching and encouraging!
Beautiful video and I love seeing all the different materials you tried out! Your designs are looking great my friend. Glad you’re having a good time with the laser, and thanks for the shout out!
Thank you so much, buddy! Super glad I went the Atomstack route, and thankful for the tips!
CrafsMan, your CrafsFriend did a good job with the camera work help. You are getting so fancy!
Love the finicity! 11:52
A little samplin’ from Whitney…love it!
I just finished putting together a kit for a mechanical music box with gear drive and secret compartments. The brand was ROKR, if you wanted to look them up to see. It was made from hundreds of laser-cut pieces, cut into 5-9”x12”, 1/8” thick plywood sheets. The precision of the laser cuts was mind-blowing. Every piece popped out of the sheets of plywood perfectly. And, they all went together perfectly, too. There were all kinds of laser-drawn pretty details lightly cut in to the pieces as well. I was thoroughly impressed.
Loved the Steady Craftin patches you cut out of all those materials. Can’t wait to see what else you get up to with your laser cutter.
"The man without the microwave gets himself a master laser"
HAHAHAHAHA!!!!! :D
Thank you so much for this comment!
I have 1 for about 3 months now. I can't live without it anymore.. I have made some awesome puzzle boxes with it.
that moment on min 2:55 omg that baby scene looks a little bit creepy craftsman :0 hahaha
I LOVED the random creepiness !? Wonder if Crafson helped out with that ?!
Yuuuuuuus, you have just entered my wheelhouse, Crafsman! We got our laser engraver around December of 2020 and have been going crazy with it, and then upgraded to a 10watt laser this year, allowing us to engrave stone and metal! It's super cool stuff!
SNAP! :D That's really neat! I'm glad to be in the laser family now - ha! :D Have not tried stone yet. I imagine it needs to be relatively flat(?).
Thank you for watching and commenting!
Awww, such an adorable little turt!!! That’s an excellent design, I look forward to spotting them in the wild! I’m being very fascinated with the advances in home lasers, and I see why so many folks do homebrew if they can. Lots of nice out-of-the-box machines coming out, and lots of little features that would be amazing to combine together!
Love the "in the wild" concept
That new logo is ADORABLE! I love them both, the current one and the new one.
Thank you so much! :D This encourages us.

Ooh, The Crafsman! (Long time listener, first time caller, ...) I've had one and loved one of these -- the extension and rotary are worth the extra dollars, especially the extension -- 12x24 sheets of most stuffs is cheaper than the smaller trims of most stuffs -- the wiring is easy enough -- probably pays for itself if you batch parts. Luv y'all, back.
3:03 That slick little kid!
Dude, the Eye of Thundera AND the Gauntlet of Omens??? yup, im jelly now lol 😄✌️💚
Oh mannn, believe me - I was FLOORED to get those items! Jason is a talented son-of-a-gun, and I'm grateful to have such items. :) Thank you for watching! :D
@@TheCrafsMan thank you for sharing lol
always love your stuff, my dude. This world needs way more of your kinda smooth 😉👍
Be careful, Crafsman! Without an enclosure, you could be bouncing IR laser around the place and not know it, if these lasers are doubled from IR frequencies. It's good you're being careful with eye protection, but your cameras aren't and they can be damaged, too.
Alright now, Crafsman! I hope to see you make something really unique with it. Something we haven't seen out of laser cutting before. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with!
Thank you! :D
What if I told you I wanted to try ANIMATION with the laser cutter?!? :D
(Because that's what I want to do. LOL! Think of a *physical* version of the paper cutout character, for example. :D)
@@TheCrafsMan You'll 'WOW' us, I'm sure!
Awesome, can't wait to see what you come up with using this!
A laser cutter is definitely on my workshop wishlist. So many possibilities with these. Great video as always! Also soooo jealous of that Thundercats sword and gauntlet. Amazing!
Somebody sent Crafsman a New Toy!!!!
😂💖
Thank you for the thorough review. I feel like you put that laser through its paces in a way that you don't always see with these reviews. A lot of crafters tend to show only what they would be interested in using with the machine....then again, you are such an equal opportunity material crafter, I guess that still tracks 😂 After this, if my family is looking at a laser cutter/engraver, I would definitely check this one out as part of my short list.
Thank you for the really motivating comment! And thank you for watching!
We really did want to "throw a bunch" at it, but I still had a FOREHEAD SLAP moment when I'm about done editing and realize I could've (should've) shown ACRYLIC. Ugh! LOL!
:D
@@TheCrafsMan Eh, that could be its own video!
That is awesome man! I can only imagine the things you will personalize with this and all the cool stuff you will make! Can't wait to see your future creations.
DANNNNNNNNNNN! :D
Thank you so much! I feel like I'm always about 10 years (maybe more?) behind on things like this but talk about a whole world of new possibilities. :)
Hope you are doing well, buddy!
This looks like a great alternative for 3D printing to make patterns for my metal casting projects. I'm gonna have to do some research on this awesome machine.
Great video Mr. Crafsman! 👍👊
That Claw & Eye of Thundera set are freakin' sweeeet! Wish I had one _and_ a laser cutter. I'd probably burn the laser out in a week constantly cutting and engraving things, though.
Thank you for watching! I'm super grateful for it - can't believe I actually own ANY of this stuff, the laser or the fine Thundercats set.
Never thought I'd be here. Thanks again!
I love your videos, they're so relaxing.
I just want to be one of the first to comment. Haha. Your videos got me through the pandemic with my sanity and sense of humor intact.
still probly my fav channel, so wholesome. thank you!
I suggest you to get PROPER NM goggles. One you had shown is green, proper NM blocking goggles would be yellowish.
Hey crafsman I have a product that I think you would like! They are called stick bots they are like the modi bots you tried in a previous video but still it would be cool
I havent watched your videos in a very long. It is so awesome that your channel has become so professionally produced. This could be on Nickelodeon or something. Its amazing.
I just finally started getting alerts for your vids thank goodness. ❤
Yay, I'm so glad to see TheCrafsMan laser cutting! I've had a similar AtomStack laser for over a year but I can't ever find projects to do with it. I'm running my 3D printer(s) all the time, but after laser cutting some simple test pieces, the laser has been sitting idle. I'd love to see what projects you come up with--I hope they'll give me some ideas!
Great video! I can see your mind already turning with the possibilities for future projects. I could see you making wooden figurine standees with bases, or miniaturized wood set pieces for stop motion animation.
I've worked with laser cutters for a couple years and wanted to share some knowledge I've picked up to hopefully save you some time in the future.
1. I recommend buying some r-type style tack paper to prep your material. You can use a rubber squeegee to apply it to the back and then x-acto the edges. This greatly reduces the scorching of parts. It can work on the front as well, but only if you're not engraving. A honeycomb bed with fume extraction would also greatly aid this issue.
2. You can even engrave metals with a low powered laser using a product called cermark (or similar). We used to use taped down thin cardboard to cut outlines of our parts first. Then we could place the metal parts in those holes, and they would be aligned for the engrave job. Simply rinse the metal parts (not down drains though) and done! Works with brass, stainless steels, carbon steels, and more. Zinc anodized metals may be hazardous, so do some research if you want to try it.
3. Engraving and then cutting is a good approach much of the time, but there can be some advantages to doing it the other way as well. For example, it sucks to run a 45 minute engrave that's ruined by a failed cut pass. Don't overlook the workflow of quickly cutting many 'blanks' out all at once, then doing a more time consuming engrave later. This allows for iterations and variety, or even mass production with a cardboard template to hold many parts in place later.
If you raster engrave one part at a time, it may take a while. But if the laser can cross 8 parts in one movement of the y axis, you will save time per part since it's not moving back and forth as much.
Have fun!!! Laser cutters are powerful tools, but they're also extremely fun to play around on. Can't wait to see what you come up with! :)
I absolutely love your intro with the little house in the woods. It reminds me of Eureeka's Castle. It was one of my favorite shows when I was very young. Id love to see you do something like that, but I don't want to try telling you what to do because I love what you do. It's just, I think today's youth is missing the kind of imagination growing entertainment that we had back in the day. This kinda makes me sad when I think about what this generation has missed out on.
🧑🏽🎨 that ShopBaby is........hmmmmm i don't know how to say it......but it scared me😮 😂😂😂😂
Hey Crafsman! Great to see you are taking the leap into lasers! I did as well a little while back and I think I'm about 18 lasers in now. They can be a lot of fun.
You're back 😀good to see you again my friend✌
This is so cool Crafsman! Fingers crossed 🤞 for some denim SC patches in that store soon...
Interesting timing, been thinking about getting one of these myself.
that was the most relaxing tutorial/review ever, beautiful 😎 thanks, im one step closer to a lasercutter now.
Wow. I sincerely appreciate this!
One thing I've found with Atomstack lasers is that the laser module is VERY close to the material so if you're using wood that is warped even just a little the module will bump it and mess up the engraving.
OMG WHO ARE YOU CRAFSMAN? I was just looking for an instructional video on how to use my new laser cutter and ended up laughing OUT LOUD watching this. Thank you for this video hahahaha. I wish all instructional videos could be SNL quality.
I found a neat trick with laser cutting fabric. If you run the beam on synthetic fabric then run the same edge but a bit smaller on lower power then it can sinter the edge and prevent most fraying. It takes some practice but it seems to work well on polyester.
ty for another video crafsman
I want you to know I'm extremely inspired by your video's and just the way you speak makes me feel like I'm learning from someone close to me. I always feel like when I find a new channel it may be too late to support it and I'm glad your still making videos!! I just watched your SPECIAL EFFECTS VIDEOS as it was insightful for my first film I'll be making for Muertos Skateboards. Check them out sometime this year and it's sure to have one of your greatly explained examples. Don't ever stop and always just enjoy the creative process.
That’s a fascinating machine. You could make almost any kind of patch for jackets or gym bags or nearly anything. Not to mention what you can do with wood. Can’t wait to see what you do with h it!❤️🤗🐝
I really like your new logo pretty cool! Great video
Hey CrafsMan. I got worried for a minute there. I have not seen any of your videos in my suggestion feed in a long time.
I actually thought about it and searched out the channel itself and was relieved that you are still out here "Steady Craftin"!
It some how unselected my notifications for your channel so I suggest everyone double check their own settings.
Also another really interesting thing to do is using a mix of laser rasters and vectors. This is especially good to fill in text and shade areas.
Hey this is pretty cool! My mom has been wanting to get into laser cutting and all that, I have to let her know about this, thank you Crafsman!
Try 3dprint/original copying with conductive graphite paint to electroplating metal surface (cu/zn), even for injection molding metal negatives
Thank you for the suggestion!
Thank you for another amazingly informational and entertaining video. You are truly the king Crafsman!
Aww, Katie you are too kind! Thank you so much for keepin' on watching!
Great demo! Really want one now!!! 😁
CHRIS! Thanks so much! :D
(Still got a certain video on my list involving a particular realistic silicone puppet creature, thanks to you. Don't know when I'll make my way back around to casting/molding, but it stays on my mind. LOL!)
@@TheCrafsMan you’re welcome :) I always look forward to your content. Like I’ve said before, you are always one of my favourite channels 👍👍
Keep up the great work. I am working on something for the Toff Workshop channel but it’s gonna take a while as I have lots of complicated stuff to make for it. But I’m really excited to get it all finished as soon as possible and share it with you 👍😊
What I want to do is to use a laser for making a mask for metal etching. Paint the surface and use the laser to flash off the paint where the metal is to be etched into, so you can have an extremely detailed etching.
"Ladies and gentlemen, please help me welcome... ALONZO BRANSONNNNNNNNNNNNN!!!!!!!"
That's one thing we want to try, to see how it compares to Press-N-Peel Blue transfers! I've talked to another X20 owner about this and apparently it's not as easy and depends bigtime on the paint. I welcome your advice, because I do want to try this exact thing down the road.
Thank you, Alonzo!
Indeed, since a laser cuts by absorption of the wavelength of the light emitted different paints would absorb differently depending on their makeup. People who decorate ceramic tiles have a similar issue.
Ohhhhhh Sword Of Omens and Claw Shield!!!! And something about lasers.
I've heard so many RUclipsrs name-dropping you lately. (Word's spreading! As is your knowledge 😊) So glad to see a new video!
For real?!? :D That's pretty exciting. I'm all curious now!
Thank you for watching and taking time to encourage!
Nice! I was looking into getting one of these a year ago or so but then I decided to close my shop instead. Gotta find a new one and then get me one of these!
Here's a project idea for you to try: die-cut boxes. Engrave, lightly, the folds to score them. Then you can just fold-up some card-stock boxes as packaging whenever you need that "professional" look. :)
I operated a laser for cutting steel, at a steel mill. Very fun work, but man, that laser was finicky. It would go from cutting to "welding" at the drop of a hat.
Honeycomb bed is great -- when you have some margin in your speed-power-material mix, a good oven cooking grate can work (the wire mesh type -- mine came in a cookie kit, with a small baking pan ...
crafs man made another banger !!!! thank you for the amazing content !!!
Great episode craftsman the possibilities are endless it might make some of them lazer sword wielders from Star Trek jealous 😉 Love that new logo design by Nopal😮
Best RUclips channel on the whole platform. I wanted to ask you Mr. Crafsman, A while back you said that if you could start over things would be different. I was curious what things would you have done differently? I’ve come across that a lot. How the things in your head are so different from how they become created. I wanted to know what was in your head compared to what we see. I’ll see you on Patreon soon!
Such amazing beats and music in this video, i love the crafsman and all he does
Aww, thank you so much! But I'd say the real credit goes to the classic 808 drum machine. :)
I bet all that wood smoke smelled good if nothing else ! And that new design is absolutely adorable ^^ !!!
sweet video today sir
Thank you for this, CraftsMan. It'll be interesting to see how much you use this unit, and how long it actually lasts. I've been looking at much more robust laser engravers (Epilog, for example) for a working shop, who knows, maybe you found a diamond!
.
This looks great! I had to get rid of my k40 because it was huge, badly made, the software was dodgy (except k40 whisperer) and the tube failed and started arcing to the casing dangerously. Also the water pump and tank, extractor and compressor was a lot of extra gear.
This looks much better, though less raw power. I presume it will cut/engrave perspex?
I love the dollar tree craft section i always want to find the pallets and bought some fabric for a diy green screen.
Yay! New video!!!
Can you build a registration fence, a perfect 90 degree corner. Then you can line up and get your cuts perfectly centered. The laser and cnc routers I’ve used in the past when I was a sign maker always had something as such
It moves on an X and Y basis....oh, the Etch-A-Sketch has evolved so much!
i’ve been thinking of getting the laser cutter upgrade for my 3d printer
I was waiting for shop baby to come out and open up the package, then, by the Eye of Thundera you bust out with the Sword and Gauntlet of Omens! Wow! Definitely a treasure! 😂
Definitely the coolest unboxing moment on YT!
I get cleaner cuts sometimes when I do max power quite high speed but a ton of passes. Like 30-60 passes. It seems to vaporise some of the material with less scorching.
Every time I watch a crafs man video I always get a good laugh and always find myself grooving to the music
👍
For cutting out the wood, what was the thickest piece of wood you have been able to cut through with multiple passes?
When I used to work with lasers, we used to put down a special paper that wouldn't burn and cut outlines into the paper on a weak power in order to place projects. I don't know if that paper is available to people for custom projects. This laser looks like fun!
Bruhhhhhhhh- I legit laughed out loud thru most of this. I love it!
Crafsman! Smothest man on RUclips. The man who put the smoooo in smooth! I hope all is well brother you sound diferent today. I am worried bout ya. Love from NC.
Thanks TheCrafsMan!
the beat is 🔥🔥🔥
i dont really like to watch videos where people do mundane things but i can't help but not look away while CrafsMan is building this laser-cutter xD
will this laser cut and engrave acrylic? Love your videos...they are the best!
