Well now I'm confused....being a "DX station" and a POTA op, am I supposed to spot on POTA, the cluster, both, neither? Maybe I'll just post it on my refrigerator on a sticky note. I put the "DX station" in quotes because everyone is DX to someone. Many ops around the world are chasing ARRL/POTA WAS so a op in TX would be DX to someone in VK.
This was by far the funniest one yet. I am new to this hobby and still feeling my way around. I have learned a lot from you and the other ham radio RUclips channels. Keep the good stuff coming. Peace love and granola and all that.
This video is just too much fun, thank you for sharing. Suggestion, when you read their comments also call them out on their misspelling, grammar, and punctuation as well. That surely will fire them up. It is because of those types of folks, many remain with GMRS which provides about 90% of the HAM experience and one license covers their entire family.
This is an important video, seriously. Social media seems to bring the worst out of people. That's why I ditched it. Except RUclips. It seems that older hams get grumpy because of their poor health. Lack of exercise is a big part of it, it seems. I'm almost 63 and like to think of myself as still learning, experimenting, and hopefully encouraging others. When I catch myself thinking or feeling otherwise, I try to shake it off and remind myself that even though I've been a ham for 45 years, I don't know it all. We learn by doing. Sad put-downs and negativity won't help anyone.
Hope all faired well in the Houston area after the storm last week. My tall tree fell with my ecomm 3 efhw and lost part of my 73ft antenna but now with no tree for my antenna what do you recommend I replace it with. I’m in a neighborhood and don’t care to advertise I have an antenna. I know just plant another tree it may take to long to grow. But what about just running it along the fence? I’m just a year into this with my general run ft 710. Was in an inverted v in the backyard.
Great video man and will subscribe after watching several of your videos. It's actually funny how this particular video, the one that's furthest away from Ham Radio in any way, is the one that's causing me to subscribe!
I'm still trying to wrap my head around the concept that the little guy with 100 watts or less (me, for instance) won't be heard by guys running 1,000 watts. I mean, not only did he post it for the world to see, but he worded it with such conviction!
Loved this! The world is on fire and these sad hams may be part of the problem…definitely not the solution. Made my Saturday evening while watching football even more enjoyable. Keep up the good work. 73’s Bob (Wb8sag-in Ohio…even if it is NOT your favorite place:-)
I have been spotted on the DX Cluster myself 770 times while POTA activating by people thousands of miles away. Never asked to be spotted once. Maybe I will start asking to be spotted now for the benefit of W8SADHAM
Mike, as a Ham, I have to agree with you. And some people take Sad Ham to a whole new level (that FB post for one - on receive, yeah). I think we may need to have a new term for the Sad Hams who have reached Extra in Sad Ham world. I think they should be called Hamorrhoids. Just saying. :)
I think POTA hunting is a great was for the new Hams to break in and get over mic shyness also it gives them a frequency to go to. It might even help them with the NATO language. Your videos help me that’s why I subscribe and do Patreon. Thanks! This videos reminds me of the saying…..that a mind is a terrible thing to waste.
Very good point indeed. I know when I was first starting out in radio me and another new ham would talk on the repeaters and practice our NATO phonetics whenever we needed to ID or spell something. Good times. Thanks so much for the support and thanks for being here.
I think it is funny when people pick on one mode or another, I think that is what makes ham radio so great, there is something for everybody, the more the better.
I don't know which I love more, listening to these crazy comments or just watching you get so tickled about them 😂Keep em coming, always good fun hearing these.
I think I get what the guy complaining about the 1000w POTA activation was trying to say. He was trying to say that if someone hears you because of your 1000w, and they are only able to respond with 10W or 100W, you may not be able to hear them back. This is not because of your transmission or interference, but because of the conditions. Conditions that allow for 1000w to reach somewhere may not allow a 10W transmission to be heard on the other end.
Long distance DX is a matter of opinion. If I am running a HT portable, 10 miles (without a repeater is DX, If I am doing some weak signal work on 2 meter side band a few hundred miles is DX, I like to operate satellite and if I get half way across the country that is DX and the other day I got London on a bird and that was DX. Screw them, should we all post POTA spots on the DX cluster for a week?
😂😂 Mike, I don’t know how you do it. These guys are something else. And no… I would never have my own RUclips channel because I couldn’t deal with these guys so eloquently. Cheers 73!
The thing I LOVE about ham radio is there are so many modes to try that there is something for everyone. If you don't like FT8 there is always, AM SSB, RTTY, PSK, ATV, CW, Moonbounce, POTA, Contesting, SWL, Winlink, FM, VHF, UHF, SHF, or they could try CB. They might find a home there. LOL
It's true, you can't offer the slightest bit of criticism or give advice because they'll break like a teacup at the slightest effort. You have to avoid "triggering" them.
Hey, is there a trophy (or at least a certificate?) for that Sad Ham Of The Week award? I may never get WAS but I think I could do this. 'Cause I AM a Sad and Crabby Ham!! Don't get me started! Hate the voices you do, but love the show!😂
I am relatively new to amatuer radio Oct 21 and also a little older 67 i was put off doing it years ago by a club i went to and did not fill welcome and also not much of a DIY person ,fast forward 20years later actually joined the same club it had moved elsewhere the first day i walked in was offered a radio to listen too and have actually built a antenna (very easy though ) and learning more this club changed, maybe sad hams can ? and also can you speak Australian instead of American LOL (only joking ) but i have learned a lot from watching video's since i started from a lot of different people love your videos, some videos from different people may be out of my grasp with the different subjects but still enjoy watching.
I've been licensed since 1974. IMHO, the "sad hams" didn't really make it to the map until about 1980. The "DX Cluster Cops" should just be ignored, maybe they'll find a life somewhere.
This is better than good TV.! People just love hatein' on you. I watch you and the other guys often and enjoy it all.. Watching this episode of "sad hams" was hilarious!! I'm not even a ham...... yet :0)
Hi Mike, great video, I agree with what you said, a lot of the older (like me, age that is) hams re the newer modes etc, they moan like there is no tomorrow and we are light on new hams yet do nothing about it apart from moaning, here in ZL there are so many of these also! Hence why I don't get involved in clubs these days as I did enjoy being involved many years ago, sadly it was the same back then though. Nothing much changes. I have a friend who is a digital mode hater and I admit I wasn't that interested in it many years ago.... BUT it has it's place for me, as it allows me to get on air from my home so thats a good thing. People need to lighten up! Great vid as always..
The comment on the 1000W POTA…. I suspect he meant that your transmit range is much farther than most people, so that some folks can hear you from…umm… Jupiter, but when they reply you won’t be able to hear them because they are too far away and weak. To be clear, I’m not joining his grump. 1000W POTA sounds like hilarious fun to me.
I like cussing ass hams using phonetic alphabet such as Foxtrot Alpha, Mike Foxtrot, Sierra Hotel. They don't get it usually, but makes me feel better lol
best SAD Ham video yet ! keep making them. I am looking for a park to park and DX . I have been doing portable in a park many years before POTA was a thing. 73's
Pota might not be for everyone and that's okay. The great thing about this hobby is having the choice to operate in whatever way works for you. Pota has saved ham radio, It has made so many hams active. It bothers me that some hams feel that you shouldn't be able to operate or hold a frequency while activating a park. I would much rather hear an operator activating a park over dead static any day. Your videos are amazing and your knowledge to back them up is a pleasure to watch. Thank you for all your hard work. Your passion for radio helps tremendously to keep this hobby alive. Phil, VE3DRO
You should have heard a couple of sad hams during the California QSO party. I was set up at Candlestick in SF and people wouldn’t look past the number in my call sign. “CQ California.” “K1STG” “LOOKING FOR STATIONS IN CALIFORNIA ONLY.” “K1STG, San Francisco County, California.” “1 STATION, I AM LOOKING FOR CALIFORNIA ONLY.” Ok, I guess, no SF on 15 meters for you I guess. 😂
I'm trying so hard to think of a super annoying comment so that I can have it called out in a future video.... Anyway, love the channel, I hope these sad ham comments don't get under your skin. No matter what you do, there will always be people that crap all over it. Even God himself is constantly ridiculed by people who think they know better, so you know, there's that. Keep up the good work!
No matter what you are doing there will always be some sad individual who will try to discourage you to make himself feel important. It is a good time to use the raised index finger to acknowledge how much you don't care
came to the comment section to see if the "I got him ma" part was in here...was not disappointed. 🤣 It felt genuine, which makes it that much funnier! lol
That guy about DX spots is always twisted about that. What that rocket scientist doesn’t realize is that some logging softwares do it, N3FJP for instance. The POTA just makes me want to do it more. Not all of us care about emcomm guys. Some of us just want to have fun.
I nearly laughed at the one about interference being caused by your equipment malfunctioning. Ha! Let me tell you about the time I was turning my mom's touch lamp on and off during a CW QSO. Must have been my equipment. Not that the touch lamp module was sensitive to RFI or anything like that.
Great video! I especially like the one who is complaining about you changing your name. What I would like to ask him is how is sleep loose? You can actually LOSE sleep. A knot gets LOOSE.... not sleep.
While this is hilarious, the only negative I’ll suggest is that it might be possible to assign a “tone” to text or e-Mail that wasn’t intended. To be clear, I’m not suggesting your assigned tone is “wrong” 😅😅😅
Mike, I enjoy your channel. I am kind of old and as you can image things change as you age. ( TMI Warning). One thing is the bladder. I find your "Sad Hams" segment so funny that I always relieve myself prior to watching it as my bladder control is not as good and I don't want have an LAP event. LAP -Laugh and Pee. I'm a SAD HAM, I paid $3000 for my new rig. Went home and promptly hooked it up backwards to the power supply. Did not even read the manuel yet and there is smoke spewing out my radio. I think Ham Radio should be banned. Just a big waste of money. Ban it ALL! LMAO.
I love your analogies on those people that love to be part of the problem instead of being part of the solution LMAO keep up the calling out of those that love to complain. ive been licensed since 2005 and in and out for many years and im always learning new stuff especially since a lot of the new to me digital modes came out to me at least. keep putting these videos out!!!!! Jeff KD8CIA
Hi Mike, this video is a candid revelation of those 'Sad Hams' active in the various social media platforms. Such situation is not very different in the country where I live. I'm contemplating writing a piece in my blog and also share a link of your this video. Once I'm through I shall share the link of my blog post with you in this YT comment section. Thank you! VU3TQT
Love these hahaha.. I personally love APRS. I use it a lot when im out in the desert shooting and get zero cell reception. I will message the wife, send her my location, and can keep in contact with her when im out there for hours. Keep these coming bro lol... BTW I personally liked your EFHW vs random wire video. I had that exact question when I was looking into antennas as I am new into HF.
This is by far the best mean comments video. The “I got him ma” part was definitely the highlight 😂
Lol, thanks. That just came to me. I channeled my inner red neck and he didn't disappoint.
Yep, that nailed it! 🤣
yeah I was literally crying from laughter at that one LOL :)
We need to have a Post your POTA to the DX Cluster weekend. Hell, it could even be an official POTA award!
Haha great idea!!
@@hamradiotube We need to have a "light up the WARC bands weekend" for activators.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

You should do more of these videos. This one was hilarious.

I’m in TX…. Just the thought of me being dx to someone gives me a woody! 😊
The complainer's comment was unbelievably US-centric. I'm a proud American, but wow, just amazing lack of awareness.
I’ve personally seen young people ran off by mean old hams
Oh absolutely. Sadly I hear that all too much.
Some crazy old hams even get mad at you if you try to entertain yourself on the airwaves.
Funniest "Mean Comments" video yet Mike! Please keep them, as well as your other great videos coming! Thanks and 73.
Nobody roasts a sad ham to perfection, like you. Great work!
Thank you 😋

That’s doing it properly Stuart. I’m not convinced self spotting (for any reason or purpose) is the done thing.
Nice I made the cut! Dude, was that a dig on Frank living at home with his mom?
I loved this video!!! You keep a great attitude and laugh the whole time. Which just makes the sad hams even sadder hams.
That's the goal!
I think POTA hunting is a great was for the new Hams to break in and get over mic shyness also it gives them a frequency to go to. It might even help them with the NATO language. Some of them may be living in their mom's attic, since she keeps a washer and dryer in the basement and doesn't want his/her grubby fingers on it.
I don't know which I love more, listening to these crazy comments or just watching you get so tickled about them 😂Keep em coming, always good fun hearing these.
Glad you like them!
Just priceless and a great video to watch in the morning with my coffee. Thanks Mike for taking the high road, and entertaining us. More please!
APRS :i just remember a bunch of old guys who couldn't understand anything trying to get me interested in it.
I think I get what the guy complaining about the 1000w POTA activation was trying to say. He was trying to say that if someone hears you because of your 1000w, and they are only able to respond with 10W or 100W, you may not be able to hear them back. All these apps... youtube, facebook, etc have a scroll feature. Some people should use it and just keep scrolling rather than leaving mean comments.
Hey, phantasia: cluck off, sad ham
The banana has mysteriously disappeared... Now, I too am a sad ham.

Great vid, the impersonations had me in stitches 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Mikes certainly picked up a Southern accent since moving to Texas...🤪🤪😁Keep em comin' Mike
I didn’t even know what the DX Cluster was the first time I watched this and I still laughed at that guy.
So my friend who got me into Ham Radio has the same "sad ham" voice imitation that you have so that was extremely amusing to listen to.
It's true, you can't offer the slightest bit of criticism or give advice because they'll break like a teacup at the slightest effort. You have to avoid "triggering" them.
I love your "Old Kermudgen Southern Accent" it cracks me up every time.
I used to like the smell of solder especially in the Fall.
Mike love these videos ! Keep them coming ! Just goes to show you that unfortunately sad hams do exist.
TIL that there is HF APRS. But it is outside of the amateur band according to the chart. (He wrote 10.151, band ends at 10.150).
This may be the funniest video I've ever seen you make.
Hey, is there a trophy (or at least a certificate?) for that Sad Ham Of The Week award? I may never get WAS but I think I could do this. 'Cause I AM a Sad and Crabby Ham!! Don't get me started! Hate the voices you do, but love the show!😂

You have no idea how much I laugh with this video, Mike you are the best...😂
9:00 had me almost spit out my beer. This was too funny. 😂
Well that right there would be alcohol abuse. We don't take kindly to that around these parts 🤣
Lol.
3:25 should have told this old guy not to get his colostomy bag in a twist.
Im looking to start a ham radio oriented youtube channel and cant wait to start getting comments from the sad hams
4:20 So if I do POTA using strictly FT8...
oh, man...I'm *definitely* going to hell.
I've had DX operators chase my POTA.
This is better than good TV.! People just love hatein' on you. I watch you and the other guys often and enjoy it all.. Watching this episode of "sad hams" was hilarious!! I'm not even a ham...... yet :0)
A gift from the comedy gods. You’re lucky they send you this material.
It's internet gold isn't it?
OK, we need a "Don't be a SAD HAM" tee shirt. Please and Thank You.

The comment on the 1000W POTA…. Mike, still wrapping my head around transmit power affecting receiver sensitivity.
We have SAD Hams here too...
Mr. Know-it-all is here too
.
He can't help but jump in and tell you what your doing Wrong...
My first (and only so far) POTA was from Grand Canyon NP. A VK thanked me for the new park.
VK is DX...RIGHT?!?!?
Would love to give you a great snarky sad ham comment for the next vid, but I'm just not sad enough. Great vid.
If they're 96 and live in their moms basement........ can you imagine how old his mom is?? Or the smell of the house??????
I like cussing ass hams using phonetic alphabet such as Foxtrot Alpha, Mike Foxtrot, Sierra Hotel. They don't get it usually, but makes me feel better lol
best SAD Ham video yet ! keep making them. I am looking for a park to park and DX . I have been doing portable in a park many years before POTA was a thing. 73's
Isn’t it great that these sad hams provide you with material you can monitize while bringing us entertainment? The 7300 guy for the win! Rock on!!

these are hilarious. And this is also one of the many reasons I don't do videos online LOL :)

I know one person who is still mad that 11 meter was 'stolen' from the Ham bands in the 1950s LOL
No matter what you are doing there will always be some sad individual who will try to discourage you to make himself feel important. It is a good time to use the raised index finger to acknowledge how much you don't care
I am a SWL with a Ham license. Made three qsos on 2, meters, that was enough for a lifetime.
As a fairly new RUclipsr. This video was a inspiration to hang in there. Thanks! De KF7SEY

APRS is fun, but why would I bet my life on it when something like the Garmin InReach exists.
First time I saw a k8mrd video and almost pissed myself laughing
Love these hahaha.. I personally love APRS. I use it a lot when im out in the desert shooting and get zero cell reception. I will message the wife, send her my location, and can keep in contact with her when im out there for hours. Keep these coming bro lol... BTW I personally liked your EFHW vs random wire video. I had that exact question when I was looking into antennas as I am new into HF.
