One of the problems is that a lot of hams think that once they get their license they become an expert know it all. Sixty years of being licensed has taught me that I do not know it all and that I never will. It's a hobby, chill out and have fun.

I used to ragchew witth a group of guys and shortly after the FCC dropped the code requirement, a no code Extra joined the group. Several of the Generals started giviing him a hard time for not learning code. After a couple minutes, I asked the new Extra to QSY to the Extra portion of the band. My message to him was, QSY to (whatever frequency), they won’t bother you, necause these idiotys aren’t allowed there.

I dutifully learned to code on my own, even though it wasn’t a requirement anymore. Started with Morse Whisperer at 5/10WPM. Then pushed myself along to 10/20WPM. 5mins 2 or 3 times a day. Learned enough to get on the air and had a few shaky QSOs but I did it.
That was when I decided I probably should get my license reinstated

I first experienced the "no-code" prejudice when my wife and I were brand new shiny hams and full of happiness! We were checking into a local 2m net when an OLD SAD HAM began berating "Stupid No code techs" Explaining that he, in his infinite superior knowledge, could build a radio with a "Model A Coil". He REALLY did not like when I asked him how many Model A coils he had in his parts bin! Hopefully this attitude is passing out of the hobby.

My favorite comment for the "no code complainers" is to ask what frequencies are their plug-in crystals for their AM rig, or have they switched to that new thing called SSB with a VFO. :)

I do think Icom needs to make a competitor to the Yaesu FT-891. Same form factor, use the same Icom menu system as all their other radios, throw in an internal sound card, maybe even a small spectrum scope and/or waterfall if they can fit it in. Do that and they’d absolute slay that market.

    • @NickFrom1228
      @NickFrom1228 10 месяцев назад

What you describe is a Yaesu 991, more or less... Form factor is way different and the 991 has a million more features, but it is a portable etc. I agree, I'd love to see an 891+ with everything you mention but I doubt they will do it.

14:35 Up to some point, I understood that guy. Only a few shack-in-the-box radios are left on the market. I'm happy that 7100 is still going well. I would like to see a 7100 form factor radio upgraded to modern standards like a waterfall and a fully functional USB interface (cat+audio) while keeping that two-part form with a slanted screen, all bands, and all modes.

Regarding the "Icom 705 100w version" bit - I've pressed my ancient Icom IC-706 (not even a MKII or MKIIG, a vanilla 706) into use as a cracking FT8 rig with a SignaLink USB box. Works a treat. As a side note, I don't run it at 100W on FT8 - I'm British but not 100% stupid - but I do occasionally run it at 100W SSB. Lol. Keep the funny stuff going please - it brightened an otherwise rainy and miserable morning up no end 😂

Right after I passed by Extra exam one person told me I went from a "code-less clueless Tech to a code-less clueless Extra." I pretty much ignore him when he throws his call out on the local repeater now. Like you it isn't my fault they removed the code requirement years before I even thought about getting my Technician license. The stacking of two Wolf River coils and the fast end-fed deployment are experimenting with antennas, which is part of ham radio. Last year when one of my Elmers came over to help me install a used 2m/70cm base antenna that I bought for $40 at a local hamfest we couldn't adjust it long enough to make it resonant on 2 meters. Turns out it was missing the top section. I pulled a campfire roasting fork out of my garage, cut the handle off, and shoved it into the antenna. Before we secured the fork to the antenna we tested it to see if it worked. The swr came out to less than 1.5:1 on 2 meter and it was completely flat on 70cm. As we were securing the tuning fork to the antenna I looked at my Elmer and said "well part of ham radio is experimenting with antennas." Several of the guys in my club still talk about how amazing it was that I thought to try the roasting fork. In fact one of the guys in my club has his own RUclips channel, N8VOX, and he came over to my house to do an interview of how I got into ham radio and talk about my tuning fork antenna.

I would love to tell you about the "No Code" movement back in the 70's/80s. I got my novice in 1978 passing 5wpm, in Feb 79 I took my General at the FCC in Atlanta passing 13wpm. Later I passed the 20wpm, but failed the extra. It would be three more tries over a number of years befor I would pass it. When I did, the code requirement was 5wpm. Novice and techs could be code free, or pass 5wpm to get on HF.
For, probably a decade or more, the "no-code" arguments were nothing but fund raisers for the ARRL. It was based on total disregard of the Law as defined by international treaty. The ARRL, the FCC and even the US Government was powerless to drop the code requirement because of the international treaty. It was only dropped after ships moved from HF code to automated satellite communications in case of emergency AND the international community approved it.
Read the history, the code requirement came from the sinking of the Titanic. (not a personal command, LOL)
I could fill this page with more text than you could read on your next video, but I'll spare you, this time.
I love your work and your videos. Keep up the good work. Just remember, some of us "old hams' aren't SAD., or LIDS as I knew them. Some of us are still on AM, some are on CW, and we all talk to NEW HAMS in those modes... You can't just kill off old modes, except spark gap, or prevent new ones, even if they are sent through the internet. I may not like every mode, but I am glad we have room for them and even enjoy some of the oldest and newest technologies.
as for antennas, most of the critics only have head knowledge burried deep in their way of doing things. All the math in the world can't override physics. I always tell people, "Buck's Law: Given sufficient propagation between two points, any antenna will permit communications." I learned to repeat this to all the nay-sayers about my antenna experiments, and blunders.
I love your videos, keep up the good work.

In the world of ham radio, there's a guy named Mike,
K8MRD's his handle, he reviews radios alike.
On RUclips, he shares his thoughts, the good and the bad,
But sometimes, oh sometimes, things get a tad bit mad.
For when Mike speaks his mind, he's met with some strife,
From those who disagree, stirring up some life.
    They'll contradict, they'll jest, they'll poke and they'll pry,
But Mike K8MRD ain't one to let those comments fly.
He'll stand his ground, with wit and with sass,
And when it comes to insults, he's ready to surpass.
He'll call them all dummies, with a chuckle and grin,
For in the realm of ham radio, he's sure to win.
So here's to Mike K8MRD, with his reviews so grand,
Navigating the airwaves with a mighty hand.
Though faced with criticism, he'll never be deterred,
For in the world of ham radio, he's truly the nerd!

I'm a no-code Extra and proud of it! That being said, I did learn code after the fact because I wanted to use the mode. And I think the point of the 100 watt 705 was meant in form factor, like someone else commented, to compete with the 891.
I have a 705 that rarely sees use for POTA (unless I'm spending more time at an activation to do CW/SSB/FT8, which rarely happens because life is busy and I'll take what I can get on an activation) and more recently have been doing CW on one of my KX2's and then hopping in my jeep to do SSB on my 891. I'll start on CW, make my activation and go until I get close to 15 contacts before switching over to SSB.
I tried to find a way that made sense to use the 705 with an amp in my jeep just because I prefer the interface. And you could argue "why not just put a 7300 in the jeep?" which is also fair. I tried it in my F-150 and it's just a big radio to try and squeeze into not just the F-150, but the jeep as well. But I do wish Icom would come out with something 705 sized that does 100 watts.
But I totally agree with you on the ID-52 vs ID-50. If I didn't already have a 52, I'd have just bought the ID-50 for use at home on my hotspot. Sure I could sell it and get the ID-50, but I already have it so why bother right?

With the few videos I have, even i get "misunderstandings".
I would like a 50 to 100 watt shack in the box version of the 705. With today's technology could be smaller or similar size the ft891. I've hiked the 891 portable, not much room left for other than radio gear.
I will likely get a 705 for sota and portable work. They all have their place.

My problem with 100 watt radios like the ft891 is the large battery needed for a long activation. The good thing is that you can turn the tx power down

I am SO GLAD I'm not a "Sad Ham". BTW, I am a 5 WPM coded Extra and I only did the code test so that I could upgrade to Tech Plus. Barely passed by the skin of my teeth. Then they dropped the code a few short years later. I personally could not care any less about code whether you have it or not, you're still a ham, period!

Enjoyed the video. I do have a suggestion though if you are going to experiment with an antenna just keep saying is an experiment and maybe say it 100 times or more.
    Just thinking they might understand.
    Have a great evening
