- How to securely fit a low cost ER40 collet chuck onto a backplate and duplicate the indexing holes from another backplate. With this method you can have an ER40 collet chuck on the lathe at half the cost of a bought screw-on one plus it will run true.
Thanks for that Steve, I have all the parts ordered and on their way to me, so I can make one of these ER40 collet chucks. Great work thank you.
Excellent, Steve. I agree with you on what you show in your videos. Not too much actual machining unless there is special operation. Good presentation indeed. Thank you for sharing.
+Glenn Felpel Thanks
That was a wonderful video. Thanks for posting it!
+vajake1 Thanks.
nice video ,steve good job as usual....
sweet video,Steve, well I guess I'll make one of these, too,i've followed your videos for a while now, and have made my own adaptations of your tools, with only a few changes, and they all work great.....especially the drilling jig for the lathe, but I'll definitely try to do this too....I have subscribed and hit like with all your videos....you sir are a brilliant mind...thank you for sharing.
Hi Ray thanks for your feedback....Regards Steve
I posted about runout in my ER32 chuck to you.
I wanted to mention I cured my runout with a "Bearing" type ER nu=t.
The bearing makes locking down the collet much easier due to the bearing in the nut.
I bought mine off EB for a reasonable price, chinese I am sure.
Thanks
Dennis
Hi Dennis, Thanks... Yes I have one of those for my ER40 chuck. They are excellent. I will be getting one for my ER32 as well. Regards Steve
Nice arrangement.
Thanks,
John
+John Bazaar Thanks
THANK YOU...for sharing.
Extremely well thought out.
+Turning Point Thanks.
you speak like poetry...
realy nice colet set up with low cost .spacily for driling .
thank you for all videos they are always professionally actuate and edited well ,Many thanks and keep them coming,
good video...was going to go that route or the 5c set up...will price and see what can.....keep up the videos
Thank you. That was helpful.
Hi Steve have you details of your plunger pin assembly ? Did you do a video on it perhaps ? Id like something similair but wish to avoid drilling into my headstock or bed if possiable !
Hi Yes the video link is here ruclips.net/video/a3KRArXeOBA/видео.html
Very good!
Hi Steve, very interesting video. Thanks! You mentioned you bought an indexed backplate, where did you get it from? I am interested to buy one as well, but I didn't find a source. I bought a used myford ml7 several month ago and I would like to complete my equipment. I there an fitting ring on the backplate mount the collet chuck centric? Any help is highly appreciated. Best regrads Hartmut
Hi Hartmut, I bought my backplate on Ebay from the Myford company, but you can also get them directly from www.myford.co.uk Once you have one, you can buy cheaper blank Myford threaded backplates on Ebay etc and make those the same by holding them on the back diameter in the chuck and using a tool-post drill to copy the hole spacing. The collet chuck was one that I bought with a 3mt taper on the back which I sawed off...then made all the collars and fittings to go on the backplate to make it concentric.....Regards Steve
Hi Steve, I know it's been a while since you made this video. I was wondering about a through hole with this setup. Obviously you don't have one but I was wondering if you could still drill one in there? I like the setup you have and seems very straightforward. I understand that the through hole may not be at max spindle diameter but I would probably be using ER 32 colletts. I was also wondering if you could put two flat spots on the collett holder so you could use a wrench to tighten and loosen the collett? Thanks
Dale Canada
Hi Dale. It does have a through hole but the spindle through hole is very limited on the ML7 lathe at about 14mm I think. You could put flats on if you want.
Hello Steve,
Many thanks for another excellent video, I hope to make one as soon as decorating the lounge permits. Does the magnetic DTI stand you''re using cause the lathe bed to become magnetised ? I have one of these stands, but I've never tried it on my lathe.
Many thanks once again, best wishes.
Brian
Hi Brian no it doesn't seem to magnetize it.....Thanks for watching....Regards Steve
Hi Steve. I enjoy your videos. Do you have any review videos of ER40 collets? Did you get Banggood ER40 collets for your ML7? I'm trying to find a good collet set for reasonable money!
great vid, i used this vid to do the same but with a er32, steve, ive got a ml7 but the lever on the right wot for engaging the back gear? all it does is locks up the spindle. ive heard this backgear enables a real low spindle speed.is this true? any tips would be muchly appriciated.
Hi on the Myford lathe one has to loosen the allen bolt on the lathe spindle gear and slide the tooth gear forward then re tighten allen bolt....then engage the backgear to use. The key is on one side of the spindle gear, the side nearest the chuck. Then it will work. After using the back gear be sure to put the lever in the nuetral position and re-engage the tooth key by loosening the allen bolt and pushing it back...then re-tighten allen bolt. Regards Steve
@@SteveJordan ahh i sorta get it. many thanks steve
Steve can you get a indexing plate for my mini lathe thanks Paul
Very good.
What is the meaning of ER & abbreviation
Hi Steve, Can't say I am enamoured with the collet chuck due to the extended overhang. I was lucky enough to get the Myford collet chuck with the lathe when I bought it and It is really accurate. I regularly work to 0.0001 using the collet chuck and the accuracy is primarily due to how close the collet is to the main spindle. I would be horrified to only achieve half thou' accuracy. Other than that a good video. Cheers MoK
+Mo King Hi thanks. I find it dead accurate. The overhang is no problem. You can buy collet chucks that are made to screw directly onto the spindle on the Myford lathes but these are expensive and often run out by more than 3 thou!.... I would rather have mine than one of those. I'm really pleased with it and it is great to have the indexing facility.

Wouldn't say low cost would be cheaper to get some steel or cast iron and make a collet
chuck from the spindle nose straight to the collet nut and you would have less over hang
and less chatter..:)Just my take on this..You would have to buy the indexing plate and
also the er 40 collet chuck i can get a piece of steel for around £20 and still have loads
left over and get the nut and collet set for £80 or so.The only benifit is having an indexing
plate on the back..of the collet chuck..And i will say good job but why don't you show
actually making it ?
+Muhaa Haloa I thought the video would be too long if I showed making it, especially as I do not have a milling machine. The adaptor and backplate machining on this set up are just basic turning, boring and drilling and there are plenty of videos on RUclips that show how to do this already.
I just want to share my tool ideas that I find very useful and not bore viewers with lengthy video on subjects that are already covered.
I haven't found that get any chatter at all when using the collet, if I did then I would have abandoned the idea and not have shown it.
