Love the fact that 17,000 children bothered to actually write something down, put it in an envelope, write the address on it, buy a stamp and post it. BRILLIANT.
nowadays they probably couldn't be bothered to Email!
Innocent times. We could go anywhere and sleep safely in our beds. The special bond that John formed with Shep is lovely to see.
I don't think they would know how to do that nowadays
Absolutely 👍
They didn’t let him keep Shep when he left. Unforgivable.
RIP Shep (1.5.1971 - 17.1.1987), John Noakes’ best mate. Back together now.
Indeed.
Same, indeed too.
💔 🐶❤️
Shep was born just eleven months after me and died when I would have been sixteen!
The episode where Shep gets his name. What a find. After Shep died, John Noakes couldn’t do an interview where Shep’s name was mentioned without crying. Never was there a more public bond between Man and Dog than with Noakes and Shep.
He actually refused to look after Shep after the BBC stopped paying him for it, so somebody else had to look after him.
Lord, I remember watching this very edition!!! I'm now a pensioner!
Val, Pete and John. Dream team.
What an adorable dog Shep was, lived for 16 years, you could tell Shep was loved. Great, educational program.
Loved this show. Story of my childhood. The subjects they covered were so broad. How to make education fun.
I was born 22 Sept. 1971 and my name appears in the opening collage. very cool
Thank-you for sharing. Magic.
Our pleasure!
Bless them. John and Shep were a great team.
This was broadcast just 10 days before I was born! A real joy to watch 😊
If this was broadcast today, they wouldn't have revealed the name of the puppy until the very end. They would have also left a gigantic pause between "The winner is" and "Shep"
Or a gigantic paws!
@@KevinM913 Or if it was ITV answer after the ad break.
RIP John Noakes and Shep :(
Noakesy cried heavily on live television following the death of his dear canine friend.
Awwww. So glad this episode survives.
Every episode of Blue Peter bar one I think from memory survives from 1963? Biddy Baxter refused to let BBC engineering wipe any episodes. The BBC film library was forbidden to junk any filmed reports as well. Blue Peter has got one if the best survival rates of any live programme on UK TV incredibly.
I remember that episode being broadcast ! I was 7 .
Same here! 😀
This episode was broadcast the day after I was born. This is Thursday's programme. Thanks
Thanks for upload blue Peter I love blue Peter
You're welcome
Wow, this brings back memories
I was only 7yrs old & young shep
Too. ✌️😃
wow remember this being broadcast
Oh no, this has just reminded me how sad I was when Shep died.
I'm watching this on the exact day it aired
Petra didn't mind Shep. She perked up after the loss of her son that summer.
I was 10 days old when this aired and look at little Shep I've never seen him so young this is making me feel old.
I would have been fifteen months old and in the pushchair, so a year older than you!
Great program blue Peter. Love the dogs. Shep reminds me of my dog dear Sammy Welch border collie he loved for 16 years thanks for putting up the video thank you sir
John loved that dog.
The was broadcast on my 9th birthday and I still remember it because I wanted shep for myself because he was so cute ,,,
I was seven and a half years old, and started juniors (1st year) in September 1971. You were in the year above me therefore. Loved watching Blue Peter in the 70s. 😀💞
Shep really loved John! 💔😭
God, I would have been 7 when this was aired. Thanks for the memories!
I really enjoyed watching the Blue Peter program today nevermind when I was child, the children know best how to name names for pets but I suspect their parents may have had a suggestion or two for them? the presenting was top class.. Puppy Shep and Petra were lovely dog's for the show. ❤
Thanks for posting that. Delightful and surprisingly modern!
Agree but the pace of the outdoor report not as frenetic as today?
I liked blue peter in the 70s it was good in those days
Fond memories of this programme as a kid, RIP JN. Interesting that they showed off a power nailer on the programme, was expecting them to remind the kids to always get an adult to help you when using the pneumatic nail gun
haha the 'ealth and saftey' brigade would have a field day with this !
*haha yep... maybe it was a "safety" nail gunn... haha*
*"safety brigade" has arrived... 4 months it took... haha ;)*
*i thought safety was spelled your way for 35 years... then (uk) en spell check said one day; your spelling it wrong... haha... safe-ty... its actually easier the new way... haha and your missing an H? i get that eery post... see??? haha (kev = vek) i am missing a V myself... haha*
Is the nailer a Paslode tool? The name is cast into the handle,is seven letters and is visable at 22:16
Back in the days, when they were still young.
A true moment in television history!
I was 1 day old when this was broadcast!
Frankly, I can't imagine many children voting for 'Shep'. I wonder if that big pile of postcards was actually for a different name. :)
I don't think it was a vote or Rover would have probably won back then. Just suggestions
My brother sent in ‘Shep’ He got a tin of chum and no Blue Peter badge as it was a dog!
My childhood team wonderful stuff 👍
Awww... he loved that dog.
My mother was 6 months pregnant with me when Shep was named, so he was a few months older than me :)
So Shep is your middle name?!
Joanne Gray I was three months old. I watched this as was wondering if tv was actually better back then.... it was, just a brilliant sense of adventure and wonder in their reports
Look at Shep a Pup, time marches on a bit sad to look back at this now.
Everytime I was these old recordings now I think of Val and Pete going at it frantically as soon as they were off air.
By the time party boy is finished, all the Dossers will be fighting each other for sheps cardboard box..
Noakesy's original Blue Peter pooch was Patch but unfortunately he predeceased his mother. The second Blue Peter pooch Noakesy had for company was Shep who we see in this vid.
They really needed me as an advisor on the show, even at 9 years old I could have told them not to use footage of red deer, when they were supposedly talking about reindeer (14:11 to 14:32).
Proper English culture good memory s
John Noakes was a nice bloke.
Sad News. R.I.P. John and Shep.
Obviously, pre Health & Safety! ... Waving that pneumatic nail gun around is a bit dangerous! ... And no eye protection either!
Having said that, as a kid in the 60's and 70's, I used to steal explosive chemicals and mercury from chemistry at school! ... I had mercury rolling around in the palm of my hand, and I'm STILL alive! ... It's my birthday today; I'm 61
I was a mere toddler at the time (just fifteen months old) and remember Shep a few years later. He died when I was sixteen and had left school!
Get down Pip ? Get down Rex? Nope...Get down Shep ! Yeah
Never ever missed Blue Peter, I did have a Blue Peter badge too
GET DOWN SHEP
I noticed that the end credits don't have BBC TV on them, every other BBC programme had this. It changed in early 1972 to "BBC Colour" on end credits
Jeez, I was 4 months old
Those 3 boys must be in their 50s now 🤯
Late 50s
Be 10 when watched this, can appreciate Val now i'm older......did i read she hated the pets?
Probably the first address that stuck in memory.
Teaching kids about nail guns. Of course.
Do you believe that children would have thought of the name Shep in such numbers?
excellent point !!
Shep was a common name for a dog back then!
Yes, back in those days.
It's a conspiracy.
The limerick I sent started ;
There was a young woman from Venus
'Coin chipping' was not something I'd heard of.
The last pure silver florins (2 Shillings) were minted in 1944 and many remained in circulation well into the 1980s' as the (post feb.1971) 10 pence coin.
The 2.5 pence value 'sixpence' (tanner) survived too, well beyond decimalisation.
There were 12 penniies (12d) to one shilling and 20 shiliings to one (£1) pound. Dead easy!
A gallon of petrol (around 4.5 litres) for your car cost around 3 shillings (15p) and you could take a girl out for a nice restaurant meal with wine for under £3.00 - I have old receipts to prove it!
A brand new Ford car (focus equiv.) cost around £600.00, while an Aston Martin or Rolls Royce would set you back £5-6 thousand - about the same as a nice 4 bedroom detached house.
Boys with toys!
Limerick eh?
There was a program called Blue Peter on 70s TV
That all the family liked to see.
The presenters had lots of grit.
I think Shep wants to go for a ......walk
Superb stuff, got quite emotional at the end
I entered the Limerick competition and got a Highly Commended! (Something to do with a bat, lol)
Letters, remember those things?
Yeh, i got one recently demanding money for me to watch TV!! That soon went in the bin...
Those sneaky coin clippers should have remained expulsed.
Compare this with the crap line up the show has today.
There is NO comparison!
Down Shep :)
This is an embarrassing reminder of child-hood gullibility. Why!, we gobbled up these pretend- adults faster than our after-school snacks....that pore puppy terrified under the lights but they've fed him the same kibble they feed them in the pet-shops
Loved this programme when I was young pity it went woke
The days when kids could actually write !!!!!!!!
Peter hated petra.
WHAT A COUPLE OF FANNIES .,LMFAO
Before the barbarians took over the television schedule.
Dam I cant remember the cats name - Help
Catty Mc.Cat Face.
@@redpillnibbler4423 it would be these days.
That was a jolly good show, wasn't it boys & girls.
