Garmarna about the track:
This is one of our favourite ballads, and it has been recorded several times before. The melody of the tune is rather odd; perhaps it is older than most of the other medieval ballads. The lyrics tell the story of a maiden who marries the King's son, but refuses to go to bed with him. When a message arrives that poor Roland, her true love, is about to leave the harbour on his ship, she runs away from the rich Prince and sails away with Roland.

My wife and I saw Garmarna about 15 years ago at the Nordic Roots Festival at the Cedar Cultural Center. Couldn't understand a word, but they can freaking *play*. They tore it up. It was a hell of a show.
I translated it as best I could. It's kind of silly. Doesn't read well in English. My Swedish is really bad as I left over 40 years ago and didn't keep it up.

I just absolutely love nordic folk music
This band has its own unique style and it's hypnotizing
These guys are truly a unique band with a sound that's completely their own! Cannot understand why they're not 'bigger' than they are...
This is 'authentic', melancholic Nordic music, with traditional Nordic instruments and some times also uniquely old Nordic songs, or their own interpretations of one - not seldom with a 'twist' of a larger or smaller element of 'electronica'. A truly unique, but sadly underappreciated band....I guess they were 15 years ahead of their times, or perhaps 15 years too late..?
Or maybe, just maybe - they were the ones who inspired this current 'surge' for Nordic music that we see currently...who knows? (Either way - they are in my book at least the 'originals'!)

Sweden here, welcome! Swedish and Scandinavian folk music is among the most melodic and exciting traditions, and way too unknown internationelly (even if kind of all the swedish hitmakers, from ABBA up to Max Martin and beyond are inspired by it)! Garmarna is one of the greatest folk music (cross-over) groups (even if most swedish people, who aren’t into folk music, probably haven’t heard of them)! I met the singer in like 2007 and her sign this album (that’s how long ago it was; an autograph!😏😁) from ’96 or if it was ’97. Vänner och fränder is a great song from the same album.

This band comes from special region that has been both Norway and Sweden. And that was independent until 1177. It is extremely isolated and rural and at the same time connected to the global market through the port of Trondheim. The singer, Emma Härdelin, is like an ethnographic study of how people from that region look. I have met several people who have their ancestry from Tröndelag or Jämtland-Härjedalen as we say in Sweden. And they have that exact same look.
So, the songs are extremely traditional, and at the same time, connected to general European folk. Because new impulses were coming in from port of Trondheim.

This is one of my favorite songs. I've been listening to Garmarna and other similar Swedish groups since I was about 10. I'm 32 now.
do you know any similar scandi songs? with vocal polyphony? I only know some songs by Skamöld (Vallhöll, Aras). But other than that it seems unusual for scandinavian/nordic music

I love how the language sounds. I want to learn it. I was trying to learn it from books for a while, and lyrics translations. Got out a tape at one point. Need to take a class.
It's older swedish however.. People don't speak like this.. The rolled R for example is something no one does.
Or some of the conjugations and words aren't used anymore aswell
About those rolling R´s , it depends of wich part of Sweden you are from . . . :) .
