  • Dissociation means we mentally leave our reality. So we may be here physically but our emotions and our mind have gone else-were.
    Dissociation can be lumped into two categories which are
    1. depersonalization: feeling like we are disconnected or detached from ourselves or
    2. derealization: feeling disconnected of detached from our surroundings
    Dissociation usually shows up and is common when we experience trauma such as physical or sexual trauma and we have no way out. It is also common when growing up in an environment where we did not feel safe such as with alcoholic parents or emotionally unavailable parents and in situation where we did not feel our safety needs were being met. In order to survive and be able to move forward our brains numbs our emotions and physical pain sensors and takes us to another place, where we don't feel like the bad situation is really happening to us. This is survival mechanism to help us make it through tat traumatic experience.
    Although dissociation helps keep us safe during traumatic events, it becomes a defense mechanism that is triggered in other situation including ones that are unrelated to the trauma.
    So there may be triggers such as feelings, words, sounds, smells, and situations, that trigger our dissociative responce and we may not even be aware of these triggers. all of the sudden we realize that we have gone elsewhere and unsure why.
    so you might realize you are:
    1. Feeling detached from your body or reality - so this is like feeling like your body is not yours everything feels like of foggy and you're not sure whats real
    2. You might Feel like you're observing yourself from the outside - this is like having an out of body experience. just looking down at yourself but not really feeling like you have control over your body, thoughts, or words
    3. you might feel like your detached from your surroundings- this is where you are in your body but everything around you is sort of 2 dimensional or just not a part of your current life
    4. you might Feel emotionally numb - so just not really feeling much at all, no real emotions so you are sort of on auto pilot. when people ask you how you are doing, you might think I don't know because I don't really feel anything.
    5. you might Have an altered sense of time- This is were you lose track of time, things might seem to go really really slow or super fast and you might feel like you are stuck in time for a while.
    6. you might feel like you are going through a tunnel- so this might feel like everything around you including your thoughts, feelings, situations are are going through a tunnel. everything is sort of floating around you but you don't feel attached to any of it.
    7. you might feel weird sensations in your body like tingling or being unable to move. you may feel temporarily paralyzed or you might feel weird sensations in your body especially on your hands and feet
    8. you might mentally check out- so this can be like day dreaming, or just staring at someone while they talk but not really hearing or understanding what they are saying.
    Those are some of the major indicators that you are experiencing dissociation. If you have experienced a trauma or multiple traumas throughout your life, talking to a trauma-informed therapist can help. Make sure the therapist tis trauma informed and trained because traditional talk therapy or traditional CBT will not work for trauma or complex trauma. Trauma therapy might be linger and it should help you establish safety first meaning you work on feeling safe in the therapists office and with that therapist before you dive in to trauma work and processing.

    You described what I feel so accurately. When I say "I'm dissociating" to my friends/family, I feel they misconstrue how "our of it" I feel. Therefore, they'll assume what I am/am not capable of in regards to being productive or doing tasks. I find it difficult to make them understand how "stuck" I am, I can't just snap out of it and it's not mild daydreaming. The other day, 10hrs passed without me aware. Part of me feels guilty, because my parents' words are in the back of my head saying I'm lazy, useless, or do nothing. Or my ex bf that would tell me that I do nothing but "sleep, cry, and complain'". Part of why he's now my ex after nearly 2years.

      One thing i would suggest, is to tell people , exactly how you feel, regardless of their response. Trust me, you will feel lot better.

    Thank you for explaining this. I never knew what it was and why I was feeling a certain way. I had parents that weren’t emotionally available to me. They and my brother were non communicators and I NEED to communicate but wasn’t allowed to growing up. (I sure do now, though) I’m the odd one out and it has caused a lot of heartache in my life...and continues to when it comes to my parents. It’s a daily struggle and I’m forever a work in progress.
    Also, thank you for keeping these videos short and straight to the point. I will keep watching your videos. 😊

      You're very welcome! You're not alone, many people don't realize that having emotionally unavailable parents can result in many mental health challenges including complex trauma as well as other mental health challenges. I am glad that you are able to communicate now though, thats great! Let me know if there is anything in particular you want me to make a video about :)

    4:34 oh God I have that. Sometimes I stare at a fixed point or at person meanwhile they speak but I'm experiencing an abstract reality. I thought it was me been stupid but maybe is something like that.
    It is a flat space sometimes but I've experience something like if that space where I am transforms into an abstract time space of shapes, sounds and feelings .

  • @Blooming_soull

    That's exactly how I feel.
    I literally look at myself in the mirror and be like "is this me?" it always feel like seeing myself for the first time, touching my hands for the first time, It's literally an awful feeling.. I feel like I'm a way separated from this world, I find myself watching my life as if it was such a movie. I am around but am I present reallly?
    when my bestfriends talk about their childhood or just memories from last 2years.. I cant talk, was i alive, me too??
    sometimes I ended up lying t my friends that I remember something that happened to us together, because its only them who were there actually.. I have no idea.
    I wish therapy was free..

      When that happens to me I like to tap my fingers on a nearby object. I go through the year, month and my age. I say the names of things I’ve done, or recent events. I try to get as clear a picture I can about how the object I’m taping looks/smells.

    Im feeling all of these symptoms at different times and on different days it fluctuates between every symtom you said and I don't know how to even feel about it but as soon as you kept saying all of them, the more I realized how deep I am in this and I actually felt something and it was empathy, for myself???

    • @Micheline.Maalouf
      @Micheline.Maalouf  4 года назад +4

      You can feel empathy for yourself! It's you realizing that what you are going through is normal and it is a protector. Use the tools and see how that goes also, try to reach out for help. Talk to a school counselor and your parents.

    Dissociation can be divided into more than two categories. 1) depersonalization, closely related to 2) derealization, 3) dissociative amnesia, which may be long, short, historical, or current, regular or a one-off sort of thing, disordered/disruptive or ordinary and healthy, and may include 5) dissociative fugue or 6) emotional amnesia, 7) emotional numbness, or 8) dissociated identity states.

    My anxiety was triggered off of a medication I was trying to take for my gerd called metoclopromide aka reglan I took one single 10mg dosage without reading the side effects ! and within minutes of it touching my blood stream my body panicked had a horrible anxiety attack on the road driving ! Never had anxiety like this before ! Will never take that crap AGAIN ! Wouldn’t recommend this medication to my WORST enemy ! I discontinued it ASAP ! Took this August 13th and now it’s oct 3rd, After that I’ve been experiencing Derealization, muscle aches and twitches, twitches by my croch, legs, arms and face ! Fatigued constantly all I wanna do is sleep, headaches, dizziness constant worry, I have developed also social anxiety as well from this medication ! Sense of hearing is off, beeping noise in ear, seems like I’m about to faint at times, then I panicked even more ! Weak extremely weak legs almost fell down one day my legs felt like they were giving out walking on a car lot ! Even more panick ! Seems like I can’t go anywhere or talk to anyone properly ! So I chose to stay in ! I just started meditating tho ! I’m restless ! It’s horrible it seems like I can’t get a break ! I already started to take this medication for whatever is going on with my stomach ! And now I’m panicky about my stomach health, thought I had colon cancer or something bad ! I developed health anxiety any ache or dry eye or tiredness or heachache I think something is wrong horrible way of living ! But it will get better to anyone who is feeling like this ! Trust me it will hard times don’t last trust that ! And derealization doesn’t either ! What I’ve learned is it isn’t harmful it’s your body way of protecting you from trauma ! Stay prayed up ! Hope you guys all feel better ! 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽♥️💪🏽 #WARRIORS

    It comes from abuse mental abuse . the abuser controls all the victims action till the victim dies inside and then the victim' forget what makes them feel alive the shut down completely for a very long time. And become mentally and physically drained, and it just becomes the norm for the victim it's sad . Truma.

    So does a narcissist have dissociation? Since they are so emotionally numb because of the trauma they’ve experienced as a child? Or is that just a completely different thing 😭

  • @shaclachic3345
    @shaclachic3345 4 года назад

    You said dissociation is a trauma response which is very interesting but also leaves me confused. I personally often feel depersonalization. That said - I can’t recall this dissociation happening because of trauma? Is it possible to dissociate just because?

    • @Micheline.Maalouf
      @Micheline.Maalouf  4 года назад +4

      It can also occur during extremely stressful times. We all have trauma and many of us don't recognize how certain life events affected us. Trauma isn't what happens to us but rather how our bodies and brains respond to what has happened to us. It is a deep response and one of the survival/coping skills we develop is dissociation.
