I had an argument with California DMV When I bought my 1966 Imperial Crown 4 door. They changed the registration to Chrysler from Imperial by the time I got the paperwork back. They said it didn't make any difference. I also have a '64 Crown convertible and Crown Coupe and a 1965 Crown 4 door, all registered as Imperials. They finally changed it back to an Imperial. Also found out the Imperial cost less to insure because in those years they never sustained as much body damage as a Chrysler in a crash. Most people don't realize even the engine was different than other Chrysler products with the same size engines. the metal for the block was a higher tin content, and the blocks were tougher on the Imperials and 300 letter series cars that shared it. About the hole in the block. When I first got my '66 there was a letter from Chrysler Corp telling the first owner(after they found a hole midway back on the drivers side in the block)The hole was a visual imperfection and in no way a weakness in the block. It still has the hole and has 266,000 miles with no problems (had 30,000 miles when bought in 1971). The numbly exhaust is personal preference, My car was a special order high output Interceptor 440 spec, with much heavier suspension than usual, and dual exhaust (most except the convertible had single). It was stone silent with the duals when I bought it, but when floored had an incredible swishing noise from the exhaust. I changed it to glass packs which it still has. They are wonderful automobiles, and they are IMPERIALS.
Hi Larry Foster, Thank you for viewing, sharing, and adding to the story, Lou
Prior to 1955, the Imperial was rightly called a Chrysler Imperial. It was just a step up in luxury after the New Yorker. Then of course in 1955, Chrysler spun off the Imperial as its own division. But there were a couple of problems. First, in 1955 and again in 1956, the Imperial looked like a gussied up New Yorker. Different front and rear, but the same body style, and the same dashboard. The Imp didn't get its own body until 1957. Second problem, Cadillac, Lincoln, Packhard (sp) sold their cars in stand alone dealerships. Chrysler continued to sell their new Imps in the same dealerships as the lowly Windsor, and other Chrysler division cars. So my feeling is the buying public interested in purchasing an Imperial never made the disconnect. They continued to see low end Windsors and other cars in the same showroom. Hence, the continuation (to this day) referring to the car as a Chrysler Imperial.
Check the VIN. If the letter of the "make" code is the letter "Y" , than the car is an IMPERIAL...not a "Chrysler Imperial".
All Chrysler models use a "C" make code...no matter what ANYONE tells you !!
Then, if they make the claim that both cars are made by the same division, remind them that both Mercury's and Lincoln's were made by the same division of Ford, yet they were two separate Brands or makes of cars. A Lincoln was not a Mercury, nor was a Mercury a Lincoln. Same basic principle. The "Chrysler imperial" argument simply doesn't hold water.
@@williamg2552 The Chrysler corporation created the Imperial, and years later the Imperial was re-absorbed into the Chrysler corporation. The Imperials built between 1955 and 1975 used Chrysler engines, Chrysler transmissions, and various components were made by Chrysler. Although I have no evidence, I am guessing that Chrysler executives were paid for every Imperial sold. Imperials or Chrysler Imperials were all Chrysler products. Your argument is simply irrelevant to the millions of people who don't have their feelings wrapped around a name revision.
Just want to give my vote to: More cars like this -please. Good job.
You're vote is in :-) Thank you for the "Good job", Lou
The 1965 Imperial Convertible is ready for long luxury journeys. It sounds perfectly timed got a smooth sky blue ride. Thanks for your world classic car videos.
Hi Juan, A long journey in this car sounds fun! You're welcome, Lou
The banker drove a Chrysler. The bank owner drove an Imperial. Get it?
Nice :-) Got it :-)
300 lbs in counter weights blows my mind - whole different era.
That is crazy :-)
Thanks everyone for the compliments! Thanks Lou for stopping by. It's a fun car to drive and made the 900 mile trip there and back without issue. Please check out the other cars he video'd from the collection, a 58 desoto firedome convertible, 60 300F and 59 Dodge custom royal!
Hi Mike, It was my pleasure. Love your cars!!! Lou
I recall that many of these models were still around in the late 1990s. Thank you for showing!
Hi Jed, Happy to read you remember these cars :-) You're welcome, Lou
She's a beauty...would love to take a ride in it! What a great color, too! I love the big classic luxury cars, Cadillac, Lincoln, Imperial etc. Thank you Lou Costabile for your great classic car videos!
Hi usmale 49, Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car :-) You're welcome, Lou
I don't think a 65 Imperial supposed to be quite that loud they used to be as quiet as possible they didn't want to hear the engine they didn't want to hear no rumble on how to run the Imperial?
Hi spacemaster Chavez, I believe you're right. Still sounded good :-) Lou
Actually, a dual exhaust option was offered that year on Imperial Crown and Imperial Crown Convertibles. A new "throaty" exhaust sound demands attention and lets everybody know this is not your fathers Imperial. Or something like that can't remember it exactly. People who drove Imperial LeBarons like my dad didn't want to hear the engine only the clock. My mom did not like it either. I tried like crazy to get my mom to check that box when she was getting a new Crown convertible, nope. The Imperial engines had different grind camshafts over other brands, also different quieter tappets, thicker stampings to keep engine noise at a minimum. They also quieted the RV-2 A/C compressor. Nothing like riding in an Imperial. I grew up in them.
my 65 imperial barely fits down my driveway! it also doesnt fit in todays parking spots, but its a magnificent car to drive!
Hi Tony Fleetwood, You have a cool car too :-) Thank you for sharing your driving experience, Lou
Tony, this only means Her Majesty needs a bigger garage and driveway!
Imperial was a different division of the Chrysler Corporation! Plymouth, Dodge, Chrysler and Imperial! Plus DeSoto between the Plymouth up until 1954, then between Dodge and Chrysler from 1955 to 1961!
You're absolutely CORRECT !! Chrysler Corp made a historic decision in 1955. One that made a LOT of SENSE....That their FINEST PRODUCT should not be saddled with a MEDIUM-PRICED NAMEPLATE....That it should be free to STAND and FLY on it's OWN. It would never be taken seriously as a true luxury make until it DID. From Wikipedia: "For the 1955 model year, the Imperial was launched and registered as a separate marque (make), APART from the Chrysler brand. It was a product of the new Imperial Division of Chrysler Corporation, meaning that the Imperial would be a make and division unto ITSELF, and NOT bear the Chrysler name. And THEN: The KICKER: Chrysler Corporation sent notices to all state licensing agencies in the
then-48 states, informing them, that the Imperial, beginning in 1955,
would no longer be registered as a Chrysler, but as a separate make . That's quite a LOT of EFFORT to make a change to their lineup that SOME PEOPLE claimed NEVER HAPPENED.
Hi Olias Of Sunhillow, I see williamg2552 already helped with a reply comment, Lou
True....we do get excited when people call them Chrysler Imperial, Imperial was its own brand between '55 and' 83, I think....
You never hear Chrysler DeSoto or Chrysler Dodge.... 😉😄
Great video of a phenomenonal car....you're one lucky guy seeing all these beautiful cars!
The Imperials between 60-68 are my favourites, I'm starting to warm up towards the '69, since I was born that year!
Looking forward to the great video! 👍👌👏
Duececoupe I think imperial was its own line until 75 or 76.
Terri Bel Bliss
Wasn't too sure....thanks! 👍
1955-75 & it is just 'Imperial'. We don't say GM Cadillac or Ford Lincoln.
Imperial was built by the Chrysler Corp so it is a Chrysler technically
79tazman
From Wikipedia: Chrysler Corporation advised state licensing bureaus that beginning in 1955, the Imperial was to be registered as a separate make. It was an attempt to compete directly with GM's Cadillac and Ford's Lincoln distinct luxury-focused marques. Frequently and erroneously referred to as the "Chrysler Imperial", the cars had no "Chrysler" badging anywhere on them, and were a separate, distinct marque, just as Lincoln and Cadillac were for Ford and GM.
I like your show because you get to meet some really nice people also besides the cars
Hi Curtis, Happy to read you're enjoying the people and the cars too :-) I agree, meeting the people is fun and hearing their story is great too, Lou
Hi There nice car! I'm restoring my 1966 Chrysler imperial frame off restoration. I have a question what is that gold thing under the hood right by the master cylinder ,what kind of up grade is that? Could you reply thanks.
Hi Swanie, Happy to read you enjoy this "nice car!" :-) Not sure and hoping a Viewer with more knowledge can share. Hope your comes out exactly the way you're hoping for, Lou
@@loucostabile thanks
They added a much later cruise control unit; not original Autopilot.
WALTER P. introduced the Imperial in 1926. And the car is - Chrysler Imperial. The cars stamped out from 1955 until the last 1966 LeBaron were known only as Imperial. When production of the 1967s began with Imperial now sharing fire walls, cowlings, "A" posts, etc. with the New Yorker, they were once again CHRYSLER IMPERIAL.

Since both CHRYSLER and IMPERIAL were BOTH all-new for 1955, it is ludicrous to state that the Imperial looked like a Chrysler New Yorker. It could just as easily be said that the Chrysler New Yorker looked like an IMPERIAL...because BOTH were NEW that year...just like PLYMOUTH , DODGE, and DE SOTO were all new. ALL 1955 Chrysler Corporation makes were !!
Thanks for viewing and sharing your thoughts.
This was one of the original design proposals for the '61 Lincoln Continental but they went with the "Thunderbird" proposal instead. The designer left Ford and joined Chrysler giving this design it's rightful place in automotive history. The Continental convertible had fifty pounds of ballast at each corner for the same reasons this Imperial did. The Imperial convertible is obviously the best looking version of this model and definitely looks luxurious from all angles.
Hi Sean Sullivan, Thank you for viewing and sharing your knowledge. Lou
It's that same type of car off of the movie The Green Hornet it was called The Black Beauty and it was a hardtop

Well, I have always been a chevy GM guy, but have definitely developed a true respect for Mopar engineering over the years....How the heck did the previous seller get away with selling a car with a cracked block??
Hi Kramden, Glad you like this one, and I'm hoping the price was right. Lou
I used to have a Ford Lincoln Town Car. When the exhaust went I replaced it with a stainless steel system but it was too noisy. Stock components were no longer available from Ford. I eventually sold it.

Adding mass lowers the ride frequency and makes for a comfortable ride. Wonderful exhaust note, sounds like God clearing his throat..
Hi Andrew Graham, "Wonderful exhaust note, sounds like God clearing His throat" Brilliant :-) Lou
did not even hear it start, very smooth
Hi estpst, You're right, smooth :-) Lou
Cool :)
Classy :-)
:) :)
IT IS A CHRYSLER IMPERIAL.
These fine cars had Chrysler electronics, suspension components and 392, 413, or 440 engines like you got in any 300, New Yorker or Town & Country S/W.
IT IS A
CHRYSLER
IMPERIAL

Given that logic: Then It's a Ford Lincoln Continental and a Toyota Lexus LS430, A Hyundai Genesis G90 Sedan and a General Motors Cadillac Sedan Deville. It was built in it's own factory and it was a registered separate brand. I know what you are getting at but give the Marque it's due, especially in the Pre-Cordoba era. Cheers! - Sandy
It is Imperial from 1955 to 1975. Even the 1981-83 bustleback Imperial coupes were marketed strictly as Imperials. The later early nineties K-car derived 4dr Imperials were marketed as Chrysler Imperials.
Calling that a Chrysler Imperial is like calling a town car a Ford Lincoln.
Thank you for sharing.
