That IS definitely a land yacht. If it was a sea one, the docking fees at the Marina would be enormous! High praise on this one, Lou. Thank you so much!
This car was designed under Elwood Engel, the guy who designed the classic 61 slab side Lincoln. You can see the resemblance. I think it has a cleaner look than the earlier Chrysler products which were designed under Virgil Exner. These things were like tanks. They were actually banned from demolition derbies because they were so unstoppable due to the heavy frame and how well protected vital parts like the radiator were. 🤔 I wonder how many classic cars that we would love to have today were destroyed in those demolition derbies.

I can instantly spot a 1968 car, because 1968 was the first year of the federally mandated side marker lights, and on all Chrysler corp. cars, whoops, mean Imperials, they were discreet squares, as the body styling was very similar to the 1967 model. Beautiful car, remember seeing these around in the Los Angeles area as a kid! Thanks for finding these gems, and their owners!
@@SpockvsMcCoy They were similar, but, as you said, " The 1967 imperial had different front end styling" of the grille, bumper, and location of the running lights. The styling radically changed for the 1969 year.
@@carloscarpinteyro332 True, Imperial styling changed significantly every few years. However, except for the Imperial eagle emblem the overall design had no consistent theme from one generation to the next. Lincoln floundered until 1961 with the same problem. Cadillac had the most consistent styling cues. The 1969 through 1975 Imperials used the same roofline and instrument panels as cheaper Chryslers.
Another good one Lou. My first car was a 1966 mustang fastback. I would love to buy another one but the prices are so high on them. I keep watching your videos to find a classic I like and can afford

I am the proud owner of a 1967 Imperial Crown Coupe~~blue, white vinyl top. Car has all options except 2..Also has "wonderbar" radio with the rare reverb. Also clear steering wheel, and real wood trim on dash and doors. My spare tire is rare. Imperials had a triple whitewall tire, exclusive to '67-68. Lou, that '68 Imperial was just beautiful and such a long car. How did it ride ? Burgundy is a great color. That trunk was huge. Nice car and was impressed.
Imperials, I've not had the privilege except one '70 Imp my bro owned for a short time back around 1983. However, I have logged many, many thousands of miles in 60's-80's Mopars and they all ride & handle very well, especially the big cars. The Fury, Newport, Monaco, etc. C body cars.
well google-map satellites don't have to even zoom in on that Imperial you can see it just fine without it from space! last time I saw that car was on Jay Leno'os garage
Jesus H. Crysler, that's a beauty! Love the hideaway radio and all the esoteric guages and dials nobody can understand (Kidding, that last part was from Hunter S. Thompson's 'Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas... Oh, and the middle initial "H." after Jesus stands for "HEMI" in case you were wondering.
The Imperial had been the top of the line Chrysler series from 1926 to 1954, before becoming a marque in its own right in 1955, which it remained until it was discontinued in 1975. Chrysler made this move in an effort to put it more on a par with Cadillac and Lincoln, yet for years afterward, a lot of people were still calling it the "Chrysler Imperial", and somehow Chrysler found it difficult getting the message across. I think if Chrysler had established the Imperial as its own brand from the beginning, there would been a lot less confusion and maybe it would have been more successful. There were two revivals for the Imperial, from 1981 to 1983 and (as a Chrysler Imperial once again) from 1990 to 1993. As for this one, I can see it makes Bob quite the proud owner. So many unique touches here like that covered radio, the speedometer with the needle above the numerals instead of below them, and the chromed-over taillights (although that could have been imitating the early Pontiac Grand Prixs). 1968 was the last year for an Imperial convertible, and it sounds like would get plenty of wind in his hair on that day! And yep, it's big all right! Wouldn't be an Imperial any other way! BTW, I get a lot of comments about how big my car is too (a 1967 Pontiac Bonneville wagon). Well, this was quite a treat to see, and I can always trust you'll have lots more treats to come. Take care, Lou!
Chrysler Corp called their first top of the line 1926 model a Chrysler Imperial instead of just Imperial. The Imperials of that time had advanced engineering, high horsepower, and great quality. But the Lincoln and Cadillac at that time were often sold at exclusive dealers, at least in big cities. And both Lincoln and Cadillac started as independent companies. The 1981 to 1983 Imperial had dramatic styling but the horrible fuel injection doomed it. The 1990 to 1993 Imperial was a turkey loved by Lee Iacocca but hated by Bob Lutz. The fantastic Lexus LS400 was also introduced in 1990.
Was wondering if Chrysler ever had separate Imperial dealerships, or Imperial/Dodge dealerships. Might have made a difference in sales in the late ‘60s and early ‘70’s…and with any luck they could have kept the Imperial division going to this day…
That is so weird! It had the radio "reverb" switch, under the dash on the right but the unit wasn't in the trunk. I wonder if it failed and they just pulled it out. Otherwise, it has every damn option. Amazing survivor!!!
The fact Imperial sales were WAY less than Lincoln and Cadillac...plus Imperials arguably having a better ride due to the 'Torsionaire' suspension and were more rare than the other two makes an Imperial, today...a very much sought after car. Though it's an expensive to maintain car as Bob Hauser said. I love it and it reminds me of Mr Drysdale of the Beverley Hillbillies who drove one in that show. These 10MPG boats are simply wonderful works of US automotive sculpture...,thanks again Lou from an Aussie fan who also drives a Chrysler (Aussie built, 1970 Valiant Pacer hardtop) www.tradeuniquecars.com.au/buyers-guide/1001/buyers-guide-valiant-pacer

The loud “tapping sound” when the engine was started is concerning. Those engines originally ran on premium “leaded” fuel. I know that because my dad had a 1969 Chrysler New Yorker with a 440ci. engine with a four barrel carburetor.

Imperials are opulent cars. Lincoln and Cadillac had their hands full competing against this. I had an old 4 door hardtop Imperial at my disposal for a while stationed on Oahu in the 90's...man what a thirsty lovable tank.
By the late 1960s the price for Air Conditioning relative to the overall cost of big American cars had dropped to the point that paying extra for the convertible model did not make sense. Also, by that time AC units were fully integrated into the dashboard instead of a bolted on bulky unit. Higher crime rates like vandalism and theft at that time also hurt sales of convertibles. Sales of the Imperial were strong only when the car itself was a new design...minor facelifts saw diminished sales. Lincoln and especially Cadillac had more consistent yearly sales at that time. The repaint on this example is high quality ...possible rechroming of the bumpers?

@@loucostabile Lou, many guys present videos such yours but none as enjoyable. Top end Chryslers are my favorite so anytime you post one with a Monaco, a Fury or Chrysler I will check it out. Thanks
Imperial was its own marque. It was a Chrysler corporation vehicle but it wasn't called a Chrysler Imperial. That's like saying a Lincoln is a Ford Lincoln Continental. It's just an Imperial. Period.
.. Your headline here, ".. and 440 engine sound", is truly misplaced. A LUXURY car should be dead SILENT --- the engine and exhaust should NOT be heard!

One classy Imperial, hamburger with the lot as far as I can see.
Absolutely beautiful cruiser.
U.S.S Imperial.
Your number 1 Fan in Australia
Louis Kats from Melbourne Australia ☺ 👍 ❤
Goodday Louis, A Big Daddy Cruiser for sure :-) Thank you for viewing & sharing, and appreciate you being my # 1 Fan in Australia, Lou
Did you know the wheelcovers were balanced at the factory before installation. Have a factory photo as proof; seeing as noone believes it

Luxury car convertible production for years 1961 to 1967...
Imperial - 3,197
Continental - 21,347
Cadillac de Ville-124,890.
Cadillacs are also the most valuable today.

Nice, rare Imperial!
Hi guglielmo64, Happy to read you appreciate this rare Imperial :-) Lou
Lou, that '68 Imperial was just beautiful and such a long car. How did it ride ? Burgundy is a great color. That trunk was huge. Nice car and was impressed.
Hi Carl, Happy to rad you enjoy the looks of this car :-) You're right, that trunk could hold quite a bit, Lou
Imperials, I've not had the privilege except one '70 Imp my bro owned for a short time back around 1983. However, I have logged many, many thousands of miles in
60's-80's Mopars and they all ride & handle very well, especially the big cars.
The Fury, Newport, Monaco, etc. C body cars.
Always loved the 68 Mopar products. I have a real soft spot for the product from 1965-1971. 🇺🇸
Hi Chuck Van, Happy to read you "Always loved the 68 Mopar products" :-) Nice, Lou
To the RUclips comment reader of the future:
Everything is going to be ok and you are amazing.
You're OK...NICE!
well google-map satellites don't have to even zoom in on that Imperial you can see it just fine without it from space!
last time I saw that car was on Jay Leno'os garage
Happy to read you can find this one from space :-)
Awesome land yacht 🛥
All aboard !
What a car should be !
N I C E :-)
I used to ride in the back seat of one of these, but it was bright red!
Happy to read this car reminds you the red one you used to ride in :-)
Gorgeous 👍🇺🇸
Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car :-)
High praise for this beauty :-)
Frank would approve !
:-)
Hi iswc27, Thanks for sharing your knowledge :-) Glad to read the details you enjoy. Take care, Lou
Was wondering if Chrysler ever had separate Imperial dealerships, or Imperial/Dodge dealerships. Might have made a difference in sales in the late ‘60s and early ‘70’s…and with any luck they could have kept the Imperial division going to this day…
2-1/2 tons of fun!!!
Hi Dave F., You're right :-) Lou
Just a majestic automobile! Don't know why they didn't sell. Chrysler historically had poor resale value. A pity.
Hi Tom, High praise.
Very nice 😀
Hi Michael, Happy to read you think this one is "Very nice" :-) Make sure you watch those commercials so I can keep sharing with you. Thank you, Lou
@@loucostabile OK 😀
That is so weird! It had the radio "reverb" switch, under the dash on the right but the unit wasn't in the trunk. I wonder if it failed and they just pulled it out. Otherwise, it has every damn option. Amazing survivor!!!
HI Chuck, Happy to read you enjoy this highly optioned car :-) Lou
It never had the reverb. With the reverb you don't have the foot button to change the radio station.
These 10MPG boats are simply wonderful works of US automotive sculpture...,thanks again Lou from an Aussie fan who also drives a Chrysler (Aussie built, 1970 Valiant Pacer hardtop)

I think that was the last year for the Imperial rag top.
The loud “tapping sound” when the engine was started is concerning. Those engines originally ran on premium “leaded” fuel. I know that because my dad had a 1969 Chrysler New Yorker with a 440ci. engine with a four barrel carburetor.
Hi Fred, Yes, we'll have to look into that tapping. Happy to read this car brings back memories of your Dads car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing. It's clearly an exhaust leak and is not concerning in the least.
Over-engineered, underrated design technology tour de force.
Thanks for viewing & sharing your thoughts.
Awesome car, I just want to push all the buttons inside.....
Hi Tony, You're right, there are lots of fun buttons to push :-) Glad to read you think this car is awesome, Lou

Didn't Milburn Drysdale drive one of these on the Beverly Hillbillies?
Hi Jeffrey, Not sure it was a 68, however I think you're right. Maybe a Viewer can confirm the year. Lou
@@loucostabile The show aired on CBS until March of 1971. It is very possible.
Thing sounds like a lumber truck needs an exhaust gasket I would say. Lol.
20' long and 6 mpg .👍

Love boat
All aboard !
the only thing missing on this yacht is the main sail

Imperials are opulent cars. Lincoln and Cadillac had their hands full competing against this. I had an old 4 door hardtop Imperial at my disposal for a while stationed on Oahu in the 90's...man what a thirsty lovable tank.
Hi Mark W, Happy to read this car brings back memories of your car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
Thanks for viewing & sharing.
Nice car. I bet the imperial drinks some gas, but nice things cost money ;)
Hi Steel Assault, I'm sure this one does pass many gas stations :-) Lou
People that had enough money to buy one of these brand new did not care about the cost of gas. Base price in 1968 was $6,497.
wowwwww

Jay Leno has one its a coupe I believe his is a 67

IT IS a Chrysler Imperial. They were Imperials only from 1955 to 1966. With the restyle in '67 they were again Registered as Chryslers

Period.
Downvotes from the guys on Death Row for calling it a Chrysler.

А ФИЛЬТР ВОЗДУШНЫЙ МАСЛЯНЫЙ???
Hi Старый Мерин, Thank you for viewing & sharing. Lou
.. Your headline here, ".. and 440 engine sound", is truly misplaced. A LUXURY car should be dead SILENT --- the engine and exhaust should NOT be heard!

Suppose it’s a time warp, big trunk, strange styling, looks like a whaleish Chrysler Córdoba, not my cup of tea!
