"The Most Confused Show I've Ever Seen" really does sum it up. It's frustrating because there is some good stuff here. I really, REALLY do like the characters, but the show bounces around so much in what sorts of stories it wants to tell that it just winds up not doing anything really satisfying one way or another.
Honestly, the biggest thing that could have saved the show was to not make it a continuation. By making it a continuation, it’s now bound by the canon and lore from its predecessor, to *try* and go around it, the show writers just piled on a BUNCH of years later to have some disconnect from the original lore… but if they didn’t want to be so tied down to the show, why do it anyways?? I get it, Hasbro wants to bank on nostalgia but they seriously did NOT need to go the sequel route and have everyone suffer along with character assassination.
I work in animation, and when you mentioned how the first few episodes of shows tend to look better/more well animated, there's a reason for that (at least, in the combined shows both my partner and I have worked on)! For example, a team will usually work on episodes 3-5 first, and then go back to episode 1-2 once they have a hang of the style. That makes the first two episodes look stronger and more cohesive, to hopefully hook the interest of the audience. Then, by the time the season or series finale comes along, the style tends to be at it's peak since the artists have had so much time with the world/characters. :) It doesn't look like they did that for the Make Your Mark series tho lmaoooo 😭😭
@@QuantumHippologistexactly I did really love chapters 5 and 6 of make your mark though it gave Misty so much character development and Opaline as a villain was more like the villains from G4 when it came to taking over my only complaint though is I hated what they did with Spike his voice actor for him was completely off and didn’t sound right and it just didn’t make sense for him to be there and return in this series it was nice to get a backstory though of how Opaline took over and tried to overthrow twilight and how twilight managed to save equestria but I’d say that chapters 5 and 6 are the best overall and mainly because the writing got a lot better plus there were lots of opportunities for them to explore more in a potential chapter 7 like the mane 6 going to Skyros the land of the alicorns and discover more, maybe that being where Sunny discovers her real destiny and becomes a permanent alicorn plus it was a good opportunity for Allura to become the new villain in place of Opaline and get defeated but nope Hasbro decided to cancel it when it was just getting good and picking up and all because tell your tale was doing much better and was more popular despite many people still loving make your mark
Thank you for telling us this, I always wondered because some of the middle episodes always look odd, but then the premiere and the finale will be like really well animated for no reason.
Well, thinking about FiM, that was one of those that wasn't done like that, as even in the already rough and experimental season 1 the flash animation and writing in the pilot (and a few other early-produced episodes) were rough around the edges. Though of course the pilot special of MYM had its more complicated reasons (esp on Hasbro's part, not the writers and animators) for its state which I mentioned elsewhere.
Man, I don't know what exactly happened behind the scenes but you can really sense that corporate kneecapped this poor show before it even got started.
I truly do think so many of the issues many fans (and critics) have is just making G5 divorced from G4 the same way G3 was from G1. The character dynamics between the main cast are already strong, there’s no need to retcon parts of G4 just to have an excuse to market it to old fans, plus it’d allow for more creativity by having it truly be a fresh slate. Hell you could still keep nods to G4 in, FIM did that a whole bunch during its run, but it never felt the need to be “Oh also this canonically takes place centuries after G1 teehee”, it just used similar concepts/reworked existing 1 characters (such as Sonambula, Tirek, Applejack etc) while establishing them as being their own thing in G4s universe
You know in retrospect, I kinda wonder if this show could have benefitted from the stability and guidance that the Friendship Lessons provided... So many episodes totally lacked focus and purpose, it kinda hurt. FiM did wind up getting a lot of mileage out of the letters-turned-journal, though whether that's the merit of the concept or writing competency is a matter of opinion.

Agree, the singers of Twilight, Pinkie Pie, and Rarity did an amazing job with them just as much as the voice actors did, and I feel could be looked at as their second half.
I don't mind any of the MYM actors except Izzy's. Movie Izzy sounded absolutely ADORABLE, her voice was so smooth and cute. But show Izzy has an older sounding voice and is kinda scratchy. That one ending moral with Sparky that seems to be "let kids do what they want and don't give them a routine" is quite awful too
They replaced Kimiko Glenn as Izzy? =( She was perfect for the role! A sweet-sounding voice with a lot of expressiveness. I'm sure the show voice actress ain't bad, but I'm a huge fan of Kimiko's voice. And she sings really, really good (just look at the songs from CentaurWorld or listen to "When he sees me" from Waitress the musical)
The main reason I dislike G5 is that even 4 years later there’s still no other reason for me to care than to see how horribly the characters I actually liked failed. The only reason I care about Opaline is because she ruined Twilight and her friend’s hard worked for happy ending, and the only reason I care about the world is because *they* cared. But now it’s 1,000 years later and they, along with everything the stood for and worked towards is long dead. So it’s *extra* hard to get invested, because why should I care if these ponies pull it off when even if they are successful at establishing unity and harmony when the literal chosen one failed.
But they didn't fail. Opaline was defeated by Twilight and she had to wait for another chance to gain power again. The ponies splitting up and losing magic was unrelated to Opaline and could have happened after Twilight wasn't even ruling Equestria anymore.
@RealCoolstriker64 Nope. The crystals were created to keep the magic in one place so it can be protected easier. Ponies could still use their magic without it being directly taken from them. The crystals being separated and magic going away was a completely separate event.
@@jonnylou09 Opaline & Tirek use the same kind of "eating magic" trick. But it had the same weakness: It ONLY works on living beings. . Twilight was aware of this, hence she "extracted" all pony magic and placed it on "things" that Opaline could not remotely absorb. Then she placed powerful protections around each object & to the whole region where those will be hidden. -> The "barrier" around the Brighthouse is actually a TRIPLE, combined forcefield [one for each gemstone]; there is even a brief scene were Opaline & the 2 dragon hit the barrier at the same time (with 3 instances of Twilight´s cutiemark forming independent shielding effects).
12:50 It also makes the world feel smaller. It makes it feel like theres no one of importance besides main protagonist, her friends and two villains and thats it.
After thousands of years of isolating different kinds of ponies, it makes sense most aren't open to changing how they live. What annoys me is how little of the world we see outside of the movie locations.

Honestly, I agree with the show being very confused. I really think the lack of planned direction screwed the series. I don’t mind it tying into G4, it absolutely can work. The problem is they did it way too early, and right off the bat. So everyone eventually ends up asking “What happened? What about Twilight?” and so on, to the point where any episode (especially in a row) not advancing the overarching plot, gets tedious. I like G5, accept it has some *horrid* flaws, but it still has an avenue of potential. I really hope they don’t just up and abandon it.
I actually think A Canterlot Wedding is my least favorite finale, mainly ‘cause Shining Armor, Cadance and Chrysalis come outta nowhere. They’re all cool characters, but every other finale at least had buildup or ended with a major game changer. I love the This Day Aria instrumental and the singers are great, but ehhhh, still not big on the lyrics tbh

Zip should have been the main character. She has that drive that made Twilight so good, but in a different way. I was always more interested seeing her on screen than I was seeing Sunny by the end of the show, Which is really sad because I do like Sunny, I just don't like her as the focal point of the whole plot. She didn't really do much towards the plot until the end compared to Zip, and because of that, the fight with Sunny v Fire Alicorn felt so much less impactful. It felt like Opaline should have been saying all those things to Zip instead of Sunny, because ZIP was a bigger threat than Sunny this whole time if you don't take in account the alicorn powers Sunny has. And it's a shame, because in the movie, Sunny was VERY compelling. She lost the thirst for knowledge that made her compelling though.
If i had a nickel for every time ive seen a 3d kids show that very obviously had copy pasted and poorly done FEILDS O GRASS for backgrounds id be rich, every time they pan out into a background where everything outside a city is just like 3 trees and grass it makes the artist inside me die
That's a pretty fair review of the first two chapters which I mostly agree with. Don't agree with your dislike of FiM's musical episodes AT ALL, though. In my opinion, the amazing songs literally saved Magical Mystery Cure from being a complete trainwreck, Crusaders of the Lost Mark is one of my favorite episodes OF ANYTHING EVER, and A Hearth's Warming Tale is awesome. But yes, I do agree with you that it sucks that the songs are always so short in the actual show. This is unfortunately even more pronounced in Tell Your Tale, since that already has a very short runtime, so the songs tend to play for like 20 seconds at most. I do miss the songs always playing out in full in FiM... Looking forward to your next MYM review video!
It's a shame this didn't get as much time as fim did cuz i actully dig this main group, they aren't just straight up the main 6 and have there own charater even while sharing a few traites with the mane 6.
Lots of misdirection and no concrete vision for where the series would go really screwed it over. Movie didn’t give the show any direction to continue off of, and given deadlines, they didn’t have time to fully plan it all out. Hope this cast and setting is not just up and abandoned.

Pretty much agree with you lol Super hyped with New Gen, MYM had a rocky start that made me doubtful, yet my spirits were up by the time Chapter 2 was out. I was defending G5 so hard by that point until more chapters kept coming out and I just couldn't reason with myself to defend it :') Also huge agree on the music !!! I listened to the soundtrack non-stop when it was released and got super attached to "Special Tune", "Pony Love", "Where'd It Go", and "Portrait Day". I was SO disappointed to find out that the songs were cut down in the episode with some being so irrelevant to the overall episode ("Where'd It Go" and "Pony Love"). My smile dropped so fast the moment "Pony Love" got cut off with hardly any time as I was singing along
I really think sunny being an alicorn was pointless it never really led to anything and the way she become an alicorn wasn’t really that great since people she didn’t have any connection with sunny at this point
Since I was a kid, I enjoyed Friendship is Magic because I was interested in the story and the characters. The more I grew the more I appreciated it. It aged really well for me. As soon as I heard G5 would tie to G4 I did not mind at first. Until I realized the way they did it. By pretty much invalidating all of Twilight and her friend’s efforts. That was not cool in my opinion. I’m supposed to believe everything went to shit, and the main six couldn’t fix it, despite everything that they have faced before? Yeah right. Opoline is nothing compared to the villains they’ve faced. And there are so much inconsistencies with how the world of G5 and G4 work, that it makes me think “why didn’t they just make a new fresh start for G5 and leave G4 alone?” I mean, it’s fine if there are people who can enjoy G5. And I’ll admit it does have its moments. But in my opinion if the flaws outweigh the good parts, it is not worth it. And I have given up on waiting for something great to come of G5. This is just me though, maybe I could be wrong and they could surprise me by actually being consistently better in quality with a clear direction. But we will see. Unless they won’t get any more episodes at all?

The earth pony was escaping from Briddlewood (just before the unicorns blow up the stone bridge connecting it with Maretime Bay). c) She is an Artificer (she has "The Spark" of the inventors like Tesla or Elon); besides that, she probably "researched" how to make small mechanical machines in her Villa at a smaller scale [toys]. -> She likely could not "drive" at first at all (having to practice with it for a while to figure out how it is done).
The G5 movie is the reason I even started watching MLP, so it will always have a special place in my heart. Thank you for not needlessly ripping into G5 because some of us actually like the characters.
I have hope for g5, and have come to accept is *very* glaring issues. But damn, the amount of people just straight up trashing on g5 (which, yeah, fair I guess), but also some of the people who found enjoyment in it is… kinda pathetic.
i actually hate the way they implemented earth pony magic in g5. earth ponies had their strength and stamina and it also depended on their special talent. not every pegasus was a great flyer and not every unicorn was super skilled at magic. twilight and starlight had powerful magic because it was their specific talent. RD was a great flyer and that was her talent. on the contrary fluttershy was a very weak flyer because it had little to do with her talent, and rarity mostly only used magic related to hers. earth ponies were the same way with their strength and stamina. each pony had the capabilities they needed for their special talent. it feels weird and very limiting for earth pony magic to JUST be growing plants. what if your special talent is painting or singing or sewing? what good does growing plants do for that?
I loved ANG, not only the characters’ designs and the wirld-building, but also the voice actors, animation and of course the music. I gave MYM a chance but it wasn’t that great. I heard a few people joke about the concept art for G5 and say it looked like Filly Fantasia … MYM IS FILLY FANTASIA!!!! In ANG, Izzy was by far my favourite character - she was similar in personality to Pinkie Pie, but she was toned down a lot, which actually worked really well, and Kimiko Glenn did a great job voicing her. As soon as they changed the voice actors, Izzy’s voice became realky grating and irritating … now she’s just Pinkie Pie. I love Pinkie Pie, but G5 kind of feels like Izxy is pandering to the older fans. Similarly, in ANG Hitch was voiced buy James Marsden who made Hitch sound mature but still very enjoyable to watch. As soon as his VA changed, Hitch gecame very immature. Now my favourite character was Pipp … until Misty came along, and I adore her! The Monet she was reunited with Alphabittle, I’m not gonna lie, it8s the only MYM moment I actually cried st! 😂 Agreed, Portrait of a Princess was one of the most outstanding episodes by a wide margin. Also, did it seem like earth pony magic making giant fruit was the show staff trying to get kids to eat healthily?! TYT is almost unwatchable, the visuals are appaling, and why does every pony have gigantic mouths?!
Honestly, I did not even try to watch this show. I really hated the ties into the previous generation because I'm a stickler for world building and putting both of the shows in the same world is just unfixable. (and some of the design choices are awful imo. Personal preference) Thanks for confirming I didn't miss anything of value :P (Fun fact- in Polish dub, they did not translate the songs, so everytime it's time for a song characters just said "Yay! Let's sing in English!" and used original audio with unmatched voices)
Banger of an episode. I agree with everything you've said. Especially when you talk about "A Special Tune" That's my favorite! I was sad it was a little short, so I made my own extended version. Just a little bit.
I watched all of Make your Mark as it came out alongside A New Generation. The characters are what kept me interested as the writing is definitely poor. I still have hope that Make your Mark will make a comeback and that the writing will come close to A New Generation as the series has so much potential but they just never utilized it. This series has, however, inspired me to take the characters and world and create my own take on it.
SONIC MENTION AND THE LION GUARD MENTION!?!!?!! Also I thought I was the only one who loved the Make Your Mark songs, The Pippsqueaks singing the "uh oh, where'd it go?" part of the songs scratches my brain. And in the album Zipp responding "Ugh, and I'll forget what's been troubling me," also a great part of the song. I also the loved the intro like IT GOES SO HARD! Amazing video as always great review!
Before you even get to Chapter 4, I just want to say that Sprout really deserved better. Even putting aside how Sprout is my favorite character in G5, it's still a shame that he was mostly relegated to background fodder, and only got focus in Growing Pains and Top Remodel. I really enjoyed Sprout in those episodes, but so much more could have been done with him. Though that's not to say that Misty isn't a more compelling character and doesn't integrate herself well into the main cast, because she does. A lot more than I would have thought, when I watched Chapter 2. I just wish that we got more time with Sprout, even if he wasn't going to get redeemed.
I wish Sprout played a bigger role in the series as well. It would have been interesting to see the mane 5 help steer him in the right direction. Hopefully future G5 stuff could focus on that.

@@RedStar2002B I'm really curious how long this generation is going to last. G0 (My Pretty Pony) didn't last at all. G1 lasted from 1984 to 1992. G2 lasted from 1997 to 1999. G3 lasted from 2003 to 2009. And we know how long G4 lasted.
your take on musicals is insaaaaane. i mean personal opinions and all but still lol and yeah g5 is like... big wasted potential. i love a few of the ideas they bring up, and theres things i wouldnt change, but theyre surrounded by failed execution and strange choices. i especially loved the concept of opaline being a new alicorn, and a malicious one, whos trapped and was somehow related to the reason that ponykind was separated and also twilight had something to do with it, and i liked that she kidnapped misty and was a bad mother to her... but opalines backstory was crap and they only answered what she did _in the comics_ and it was just... she whispered bad things in ponies ears i guess. and also wasnt it that twilight felt the need to _have_ to separate ponykind after that? did they even see the g4 finale? (i dont even like the g4 finale but still) thats another one of my issues is how they made all the different things happen across _multiple shows/mediums_ instead of them being separate things like in g4. you could never read g4s comics (and ive only read like 1-2 of them) and youd not be missing out on anything, and same with equestria girls! but in g5, if you want the whole picture, you _have_ to read the comics and watch both shows. its a clever way to get people to want to see all three i guess, but it feels gross to me.
Very nice review!! I appreciate the insights, as I haven't seen G5 and haven't had a great idea of why it's been floundering up until now. I can critique the 3D models and art direction, given my background, but haven't taken the time to watch the series(es?) yet so this was quite helpful. Small note: Tara Strong was quoted as saying in an old Everfree interview that she can sing, that it's a very good skill to have in voice acting work, and that she couldn't sing in FiM because she was located in LA and the main cast recording was in Toronto. This also explains why her lines don't seem to always match the tone of other characters in FiM; she didn't get to record in person with them.
It’s confusing because tell your tale exists :/ for those who don’t watch make your mark tell your tale don’t make sense unless you watch make your mark I personally find G5 an mess the new generation movie was sooo good and opened possibilities up for a good story and had potential yet with make your mark and tell your tale being a continuation it messed things up and made the timeline confusing That’s why personally I like to separate tell your tale and make your mark deciding that they take place in different universes/alternate universes and not the same timeline/universe so it’s less confusing Plus make your mark could’ve been so much better and had so much potential and Hasbro shouldn’t of cancelled it just because tell your tale was more popular I personally prefer make your mark over tell your tale The G5 universe is just all over the place and is messy 😫😬
I actually made a video awhile back specifically about why TYT is canon to MYM, but TL;DR: You can’t watch TYT without having seen MYM, but you _could_ watch MYM without having seen TYT. It’s just gonna be a kinda “incomplete” experience. But yeah, it makes the viewing experience unnecessarily complicated. Even now, you’d need an external guide to watch the TYT episodes that came before and after certain chapters. It also doesn’t help that the shows are formatted completely differently, so ofc not everyone is guaranteed to like both. I go into more detail in a later part, but it was just SUCH a weird decision
Watching make your mark really makes me want to watch the other one. I adore it to much even if the animation is not as good quality as the movie I already knew it wouldn't. Not having much hope for something is good because at least it's not as bad as other remakes. I cried so much watching make your mark maybe because i don't care much about who the actors are but the characters themselves and what they might play in the lore
And that makes no sense. Given what equestria looks like in this universe magic being stronger after being gone for so long is so stupid and absurd the writer probably thinks magic is like wine that he was drunk on!
Hilarious and intriguing review! I do agree, a lot of the songs in G5 are great but the problem is definitely how long some of them end up being in the episodes. I also couldn’t agree more that forcing a character into a plot when they have no other reason to be there weakens it (as much as I love Twilight, this happened A LOT in MLP:FIM Season 1!). I thought Sprout was going to be the sixth ranger as well, but I’m happy with Misty being it, especially to get her away from her abusive adoptive mother and have Izzy gain a unicorn friend.
Could not agree less with your opinions on musicals (i am, regrettably, a theater kid) but I respect your opinion and think you had some great points about other things. WHY in the HELL did they not let the songs play for longer????
Am I one of the few who didn't think about the lighting on the animation too much? Cause I didn't really realize the problems with the lighting at first, it kinda seemed normal to me due to that being how the lighting often looked on old MLP 3D animations from fans in the g4 era.
I was surprised to hear so much praise for the songs, which I found forgettable. I chalked it up to a difference in music taste (I prefer the showtune/musical style songs to diagetic ones), but after relistening to some of the songs, I think a lot of it's the length. I knew they were short, but hearing you talk about how some songs went from 2 minutes to 20 seconds really puts it in perspective. The most consistent problem in the show is the pacing. It seeps into the comedy, the story, even the songs. A lot of the potential was ruined because of it.
I feel like if it was given enough time make your mark would’ve tied everything together just fine by the end. Sadly between the flaws and the fandom hate that started before we even got a reveal there really isn’t that much hope for make your mark Don’t know anything g about an official cancelation last I heard it was speculation based on some conference
I tended to think myself above the others as I really like musicals and when they're in shows I watch- seeing someone describe how they just don't prefer it in a pony video defiantly fixed that problem for me, so thank you for that/pos
Flipped out hearing Sollux's pesterquest theme in the back lol, also YOU'RE SO RIGHT PORTAIT FOR A PRINCESS IS SUCH A GREAT EPISODE AND IT'S SONG. I wish G5 had better songs :( Sad that I don't remember much of them due to how generic they sound.
I can understand why many people dropped or considered dropping MYM after the first two-three chapters. I was ready to walk away from MYM too. Good thing I didn't because, man, the second half of the show is such an improvement over the first half! Which makes MYM's cancellation feel more tragic. This show had a rocky start but could more or less pull itself together by the end. It definitely deserved better than this.
IMO Chapters 4 and 5 absolutely improved a lot. Can't help but feel like 6 was just a SMALL step backwards, but I was still optimistic about what the future could have held for it.
I thought the whole point of each MLP generation was to act as reboots/overhauls of the same franchise, so why tf did they think a continuation series was a good idea?
They were trying something different that worked (or "worked") for other properties they own in the past (such as how some Transformers series are follow-ups to the previous series but still considered their own "generation")
I think it's a damned if you do damned if you don't situation for them honestly. G4 was so popular people would've been mad if they had left it in the past, but it was also a hindrance to creating their own new story. Suffering from fim success.

I would have liked for Earth Pony magic to be more… subtle, like it’s not obvious that it’s magic. This would have explained why, for thousands of years (meaning including the FIM days), earth ponies were just assumed not to have magic at all. They were assumed to just be more in touch with the land and not need magic. But then you notice that a lot of earth ponies’ jobs include growing plants, like Applejack’s family. And it was just like “huh… these plants seem to be growing really well in their care.” But only now that they’re consciously using this ability as a power is it obviously magical.
Earth ponies *ALWAYS* had magic. Celestial literally says in the season 4 finale that without their magic, earth ponies wouldn't be able to tend the land. G5's 'now they have magic' is a huge retcon.
Seeing this video again and i don't know why you didn't go deep with the connection that g5 have with g4, After all the main villain, the main motive why the main character wants to share friendship and defeat opaline, the reason why the magic was gone for so long, all of that existed because of something that happened off camera from the g4 generation, even the main villain have big connection with 3 relevant characters from g4, anyway i hope that one day you could make a complete review of the show covering every aspect of it uwu

According to someone who worked on the show (on their socials)- they recieved the rigs and models for the ponies directly from Boulder, and because they were originally theaterical quality, they had a LOT more joints and points of motion than Atomic was used to working with. There was some confusion and growing pains involved before they really had an understanding on how to work with the models properly.

It sucks that most people don't like Ali Conned, because it resonated with me deeply. Yes the episode plot was a little unbelievable and the towns folk were rock solid stupid. However, having been in a situation like that before when I was younger, the episode captured that feeling of being valued more as a novelty than as a person by people you knew and care about really well. Obviously I wasn't being told that being basically objectified was a good thing by my evil magic mirror self, and instead another person I looked up to and trusted, but I feel like they didn't want to make the episode uncomfortable to watch if they made Opaline gain Sunny's trust beforehand since that could leave many uncomfortable implications. The episode is objectively not the best but I personally think the writers did capture what it's like being valued as a thing by a large group of people. I also am not super mad at the townsfolk being stupid here because they kind of had to be in order to make the message and plot work better. Besides I feel like it was early enough in the show for them to get away with it. If bronies can get attached to background characters with constantly changing voice actors, personalities and morals, I think Make your Mark can get away with letting the townsfolk have stupid mob mentality and collective consciousness in order to make an actual point. I do think it's a shame that this show struggled so bad because you can very clearly tell it's trying so hard and that some kind of outside thing is stopping the writers or animators from making it great. I don't really care about the G4 lore bc me personally if I wanna see or hear about the G4 characters I'm gonna go read or watch G4 stuff. I'm watching G5 for the G5 characters specifically. In the later chapters it really feels like they want to do what G4 did and take elements from past gens and remake them into something new, but the commitment Hasbro made to it being a G4 sequel just chains down the writers so hard. As a mlp fan as a whole, who genuinely enjoys all the generations and collects the toys, some of the episodes in this show feels like a love letter to the franchise. Though also as someone who grew up with G4 specifically, I can see why the lore turns people off completely. The background details referencing past generations makes me extremely happy when I notice them, and it makes me wish that this was rather a sequel series to G1 or its own thing.
I 100% agree. Excluding the stupidity of the townsponies and weird voice editing, the mere concept of Ali-conned is amazing. A story in which people treat Sunny with more respect just because she’s an alicorn without actually acknowledging her feelings as a person is an INSANELY good idea that could’ve given Sunny massive amounts of growth. As it stands though, Ali-conned is pretty half baked. Like a lot of MYM’s scripts, it weirdly feels like the first draft of a much better story. I talk about all the potential of MYM in a later part though

"The Most Confused Show I've Ever Seen" really does sum it up. It's frustrating because there is some good stuff here. I really, REALLY do like the characters, but the show bounces around so much in what sorts of stories it wants to tell that it just winds up not doing anything really satisfying one way or another.
Honestly, the biggest thing that could have saved the show was to not make it a continuation.
By making it a continuation, it’s now bound by the canon and lore from its predecessor, to *try* and go around it, the show writers just piled on a BUNCH of years later to have some disconnect from the original lore… but if they didn’t want to be so tied down to the show, why do it anyways??
I get it, Hasbro wants to bank on nostalgia but they seriously did NOT need to go the sequel route and have everyone suffer along with character assassination.
I work in animation, and when you mentioned how the first few episodes of shows tend to look better/more well animated, there's a reason for that (at least, in the combined shows both my partner and I have worked on)! For example, a team will usually work on episodes 3-5 first, and then go back to episode 1-2 once they have a hang of the style. That makes the first two episodes look stronger and more cohesive, to hopefully hook the interest of the audience. Then, by the time the season or series finale comes along, the style tends to be at it's peak since the artists have had so much time with the world/characters. :) It doesn't look like they did that for the Make Your Mark series tho lmaoooo 😭😭

@@QuantumHippologistexactly I did really love chapters 5 and 6 of make your mark though it gave Misty so much character development and Opaline as a villain was more like the villains from G4 when it came to taking over my only complaint though is I hated what they did with Spike his voice actor for him was completely off and didn’t sound right and it just didn’t make sense for him to be there and return in this series it was nice to get a backstory though of how Opaline took over and tried to overthrow twilight and how twilight managed to save equestria but I’d say that chapters 5 and 6 are the best overall and mainly because the writing got a lot better plus there were lots of opportunities for them to explore more in a potential chapter 7 like the mane 6 going to Skyros the land of the alicorns and discover more, maybe that being where Sunny discovers her real destiny and becomes a permanent alicorn plus it was a good opportunity for Allura to become the new villain in place of Opaline and get defeated but nope Hasbro decided to cancel it when it was just getting good and picking up and all because tell your tale was doing much better and was more popular despite many people still loving make your mark

Thank you for telling us this, I always wondered because some of the middle episodes always look odd, but then the premiere and the finale will be like really well animated for no reason.
Well, thinking about FiM, that was one of those that wasn't done like that, as even in the already rough and experimental season 1 the flash animation and writing in the pilot (and a few other early-produced episodes) were rough around the edges.
Though of course the pilot special of MYM had its more complicated reasons (esp on Hasbro's part, not the writers and animators) for its state which I mentioned elsewhere.

I truly do think so many of the issues many fans (and critics) have is just making G5 divorced from G4 the same way G3 was from G1. The character dynamics between the main cast are already strong, there’s no need to retcon parts of G4 just to have an excuse to market it to old fans, plus it’d allow for more creativity by having it truly be a fresh slate.
Hell you could still keep nods to G4 in, FIM did that a whole bunch during its run, but it never felt the need to be “Oh also this canonically takes place centuries after G1 teehee”, it just used similar concepts/reworked existing 1 characters (such as Sonambula, Tirek, Applejack etc) while establishing them as being their own thing in G4s universe
Gen4 MLP lasted 10 Years, Gen5 MLP lasted not even half that ...

I don't mind any of the MYM actors except Izzy's. Movie Izzy sounded absolutely ADORABLE, her voice was so smooth and cute. But show Izzy has an older sounding voice and is kinda scratchy.
That one ending moral with Sparky that seems to be "let kids do what they want and don't give them a routine" is quite awful too
They replaced Kimiko Glenn as Izzy? =( She was perfect for the role! A sweet-sounding voice with a lot of expressiveness. I'm sure the show voice actress ain't bad, but I'm a huge fan of Kimiko's voice. And she sings really, really good (just look at the songs from CentaurWorld or listen to "When he sees me" from Waitress the musical)

The main reason I dislike G5 is that even 4 years later there’s still no other reason for me to care than to see how horribly the characters I actually liked failed. The only reason I care about Opaline is because she ruined Twilight and her friend’s hard worked for happy ending, and the only reason I care about the world is because *they* cared.
But now it’s 1,000 years later and they, along with everything the stood for and worked towards is long dead. So it’s *extra* hard to get invested, because why should I care if these ponies pull it off when even if they are successful at establishing unity and harmony when the literal chosen one failed.
But they didn't fail. Opaline was defeated by Twilight and she had to wait for another chance to gain power again. The ponies splitting up and losing magic was unrelated to Opaline and could have happened after Twilight wasn't even ruling Equestria anymore.

. Twilight was aware of this, hence she "extracted" all pony magic and placed it on "things" that Opaline could not remotely absorb. Then she placed powerful protections around each object & to the whole region where those will be hidden.
-> The "barrier" around the Brighthouse is actually a TRIPLE, combined forcefield [one for each gemstone]; there is even a brief scene were Opaline & the 2 dragon hit the barrier at the same time (with 3 instances of Twilight´s cutiemark forming independent shielding effects).

Honestly, I agree with the show being very confused.
I really think the lack of planned direction screwed the series. I don’t mind it tying into G4, it absolutely can work. The problem is they did it way too early, and right off the bat. So everyone eventually ends up asking “What happened? What about Twilight?” and so on, to the point where any episode (especially in a row) not advancing the overarching plot, gets tedious.
I like G5, accept it has some *horrid* flaws, but it still has an avenue of potential. I really hope they don’t just up and abandon it.

I actually think A Canterlot Wedding is my least favorite finale, mainly ‘cause Shining Armor, Cadance and Chrysalis come outta nowhere. They’re all cool characters, but every other finale at least had buildup or ended with a major game changer.
I love the This Day Aria instrumental and the singers are great, but ehhhh, still not big on the lyrics tbh

Zip should have been the main character. She has that drive that made Twilight so good, but in a different way. I was always more interested seeing her on screen than I was seeing Sunny by the end of the show, Which is really sad because I do like Sunny, I just don't like her as the focal point of the whole plot. She didn't really do much towards the plot until the end compared to Zip, and because of that, the fight with Sunny v Fire Alicorn felt so much less impactful. It felt like Opaline should have been saying all those things to Zip instead of Sunny, because ZIP was a bigger threat than Sunny this whole time if you don't take in account the alicorn powers Sunny has.
And it's a shame, because in the movie, Sunny was VERY compelling. She lost the thirst for knowledge that made her compelling though.
If i had a nickel for every time ive seen a 3d kids show that very obviously had copy pasted and poorly done FEILDS O GRASS for backgrounds id be rich, every time they pan out into a background where everything outside a city is just like 3 trees and grass it makes the artist inside me die
The little lullaby they sang for Sparky is what kept me watching this show. It's really one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard.

That's a pretty fair review of the first two chapters which I mostly agree with. Don't agree with your dislike of FiM's musical episodes AT ALL, though. In my opinion, the amazing songs literally saved Magical Mystery Cure from being a complete trainwreck, Crusaders of the Lost Mark is one of my favorite episodes OF ANYTHING EVER, and A Hearth's Warming Tale is awesome. But yes, I do agree with you that it sucks that the songs are always so short in the actual show. This is unfortunately even more pronounced in Tell Your Tale, since that already has a very short runtime, so the songs tend to play for like 20 seconds at most. I do miss the songs always playing out in full in FiM...

Lots of misdirection and no concrete vision for where the series would go really screwed it over. Movie didn’t give the show any direction to continue off of, and given deadlines, they didn’t have time to fully plan it all out. Hope this cast and setting is not just up and abandoned.

Super hyped with New Gen, MYM had a rocky start that made me doubtful, yet my spirits were up by the time Chapter 2 was out. I was defending G5 so hard by that point until more chapters kept coming out and I just couldn't reason with myself to defend it :')
Also huge agree on the music !!! I listened to the soundtrack non-stop when it was released and got super attached to "Special Tune", "Pony Love", "Where'd It Go", and "Portrait Day". I was SO disappointed to find out that the songs were cut down in the episode with some being so irrelevant to the overall episode ("Where'd It Go" and "Pony Love"). My smile dropped so fast the moment "Pony Love" got cut off with hardly any time as I was singing along
I really think sunny being an alicorn was pointless it never really led to anything and the way she become an alicorn wasn’t really that great since people she didn’t have any connection with sunny at this point

Since I was a kid, I enjoyed Friendship is Magic because I was interested in the story and the characters. The more I grew the more I appreciated it. It aged really well for me.
As soon as I heard G5 would tie to G4 I did not mind at first. Until I realized the way they did it. By pretty much invalidating all of Twilight and her friend’s efforts. That was not cool in my opinion.
I’m supposed to believe everything went to shit, and the main six couldn’t fix it, despite everything that they have faced before? Yeah right. Opoline is nothing compared to the villains they’ve faced.
And there are so much inconsistencies with how the world of G5 and G4 work, that it makes me think “why didn’t they just make a new fresh start for G5 and leave G4 alone?”
I mean, it’s fine if there are people who can enjoy G5. And I’ll admit it does have its moments. But in my opinion if the flaws outweigh the good parts, it is not worth it. And I have given up on waiting for something great to come of G5.
This is just me though, maybe I could be wrong and they could surprise me by actually being consistently better in quality with a clear direction. But we will see. Unless they won’t get any more episodes at all?

c) She is an Artificer (she has "The Spark" of the inventors like Tesla or Elon); besides that, she probably "researched" how to make small mechanical machines in her Villa at a smaller scale [toys].
-> She likely could not "drive" at first at all (having to practice with it for a while to figure out how it is done).
The G5 movie is the reason I even started watching MLP, so it will always have a special place in my heart. Thank you for not needlessly ripping into G5 because some of us actually like the characters.
I have hope for g5, and have come to accept is *very* glaring issues. But damn, the amount of people just straight up trashing on g5 (which, yeah, fair I guess), but also some of the people who found enjoyment in it is… kinda pathetic.

i actually hate the way they implemented earth pony magic in g5. earth ponies had their strength and stamina and it also depended on their special talent. not every pegasus was a great flyer and not every unicorn was super skilled at magic. twilight and starlight had powerful magic because it was their specific talent. RD was a great flyer and that was her talent. on the contrary fluttershy was a very weak flyer because it had little to do with her talent, and rarity mostly only used magic related to hers. earth ponies were the same way with their strength and stamina. each pony had the capabilities they needed for their special talent. it feels weird and very limiting for earth pony magic to JUST be growing plants. what if your special talent is painting or singing or sewing? what good does growing plants do for that?
I loved ANG, not only the characters’ designs and the wirld-building, but also the voice actors, animation and of course the music.
I gave MYM a chance but it wasn’t that great. I heard a few people joke about the concept art for G5 and say it looked like Filly Fantasia … MYM IS FILLY FANTASIA!!!!
In ANG, Izzy was by far my favourite character - she was similar in personality to Pinkie Pie, but she was toned down a lot, which actually worked really well, and Kimiko Glenn did a great job voicing her. As soon as they changed the voice actors, Izzy’s voice became realky grating and irritating … now she’s just Pinkie Pie. I love Pinkie Pie, but G5 kind of feels like Izxy is pandering to the older fans.
Similarly, in ANG Hitch was voiced buy James Marsden who made Hitch sound mature but still very enjoyable to watch. As soon as his VA changed, Hitch gecame very immature.
Now my favourite character was Pipp … until Misty came along, and I adore her! The Monet she was reunited with Alphabittle, I’m not gonna lie, it8s the only MYM moment I actually cried st! 😂
Agreed, Portrait of a Princess was one of the most outstanding episodes by a wide margin.
Also, did it seem like earth pony magic making giant fruit was the show staff trying to get kids to eat healthily?!

Honestly, I did not even try to watch this show. I really hated the ties into the previous generation because I'm a stickler for world building and putting both of the shows in the same world is just unfixable. (and some of the design choices are awful imo. Personal preference) Thanks for confirming I didn't miss anything of value :P
(Fun fact- in Polish dub, they did not translate the songs, so everytime it's time for a song characters just said "Yay! Let's sing in English!" and used original audio with unmatched voices)
Banger of an episode. I agree with everything you've said. Especially when you talk about "A Special Tune" That's my favorite! I was sad it was a little short, so I made my own extended version. Just a little bit.
I watched all of Make your Mark as it came out alongside A New Generation. The characters are what kept me interested as the writing is definitely poor. I still have hope that Make your Mark will make a comeback and that the writing will come close to A New Generation as the series has so much potential but they just never utilized it. This series has, however, inspired me to take the characters and world and create my own take on it.

MYM is a classic example of the "animation is for kids" mindset and all the pitfalls that come with it.

Before you even get to Chapter 4, I just want to say that Sprout really deserved better. Even putting aside how Sprout is my favorite character in G5, it's still a shame that he was mostly relegated to background fodder, and only got focus in Growing Pains and Top Remodel. I really enjoyed Sprout in those episodes, but so much more could have been done with him.
Though that's not to say that Misty isn't a more compelling character and doesn't integrate herself well into the main cast, because she does. A lot more than I would have thought, when I watched Chapter 2. I just wish that we got more time with Sprout, even if he wasn't going to get redeemed.
It's weird, Sprout and his mom were the generation's original antagonists, yet they only show up very rarely.
I wish Sprout played a bigger role in the series as well. It would have been interesting to see the mane 5 help steer him in the right direction. Hopefully future G5 stuff could focus on that.

and yeah g5 is like... big wasted potential. i love a few of the ideas they bring up, and theres things i wouldnt change, but theyre surrounded by failed execution and strange choices. i especially loved the concept of opaline being a new alicorn, and a malicious one, whos trapped and was somehow related to the reason that ponykind was separated and also twilight had something to do with it, and i liked that she kidnapped misty and was a bad mother to her... but opalines backstory was crap and they only answered what she did _in the comics_ and it was just... she whispered bad things in ponies ears i guess. and also wasnt it that twilight felt the need to _have_ to separate ponykind after that? did they even see the g4 finale? (i dont even like the g4 finale but still)
thats another one of my issues is how they made all the different things happen across _multiple shows/mediums_ instead of them being separate things like in g4. you could never read g4s comics (and ive only read like 1-2 of them) and youd not be missing out on anything, and same with equestria girls! but in g5, if you want the whole picture, you _have_ to read the comics and watch both shows. its a clever way to get people to want to see all three i guess, but it feels gross to me.

Small note: Tara Strong was quoted as saying in an old Everfree interview that she can sing, that it's a very good skill to have in voice acting work, and that she couldn't sing in FiM because she was located in LA and the main cast recording was in Toronto. This also explains why her lines don't seem to always match the tone of other characters in FiM; she didn't get to record in person with them.
It’s confusing because tell your tale exists :/ for those who don’t watch make your mark tell your tale don’t make sense unless you watch make your mark I personally find G5 an mess the new generation movie was sooo good and opened possibilities up for a good story and had potential yet with make your mark and tell your tale being a continuation it messed things up and made the timeline confusing
That’s why personally I like to separate tell your tale and make your mark deciding that they take place in different universes/alternate universes and not the same timeline/universe so it’s less confusing
Plus make your mark could’ve been so much better and had so much potential and Hasbro shouldn’t of cancelled it just because tell your tale was more popular I personally prefer make your mark over tell your tale

I actually made a video awhile back specifically about why TYT is canon to MYM, but TL;DR: You can’t watch TYT without having seen MYM, but you _could_ watch MYM without having seen TYT. It’s just gonna be a kinda “incomplete” experience.
But yeah, it makes the viewing experience unnecessarily complicated. Even now, you’d need an external guide to watch the TYT episodes that came before and after certain chapters.
It also doesn’t help that the shows are formatted completely differently, so ofc not everyone is guaranteed to like both. I go into more detail in a later part, but it was just SUCH a weird decision
Watching make your mark really makes me want to watch the other one. I adore it to much even if the animation is not as good quality as the movie I already knew it wouldn't. Not having much hope for something is good because at least it's not as bad as other remakes. I cried so much watching make your mark maybe because i don't care much about who the actors are but the characters themselves and what they might play in the lore

Hilarious and intriguing review! I do agree, a lot of the songs in G5 are great but the problem is definitely how long some of them end up being in the episodes. I also couldn’t agree more that forcing a character into a plot when they have no other reason to be there weakens it (as much as I love Twilight, this happened A LOT in MLP:FIM Season 1!). I thought Sprout was going to be the sixth ranger as well, but I’m happy with Misty being it, especially to get her away from her abusive adoptive mother and have Izzy gain a unicorn friend.

Am I one of the few who didn't think about the lighting on the animation too much? Cause I didn't really realize the problems with the lighting at first, it kinda seemed normal to me due to that being how the lighting often looked on old MLP 3D animations from fans in the g4 era.

I was surprised to hear so much praise for the songs, which I found forgettable. I chalked it up to a difference in music taste (I prefer the showtune/musical style songs to diagetic ones), but after relistening to some of the songs, I think a lot of it's the length. I knew they were short, but hearing you talk about how some songs went from 2 minutes to 20 seconds really puts it in perspective.
The most consistent problem in the show is the pacing. It seeps into the comedy, the story, even the songs. A lot of the potential was ruined because of it.
I feel like if it was given enough time make your mark would’ve tied everything together just fine by the end. Sadly between the flaws and the fandom hate that started before we even got a reveal there really isn’t that much hope for make your mark

I can understand why many people dropped or considered dropping MYM after the first two-three chapters. I was ready to walk away from MYM too. Good thing I didn't because, man, the second half of the show is such an improvement over the first half! Which makes MYM's cancellation feel more tragic. This show had a rocky start but could more or less pull itself together by the end. It definitely deserved better than this.
IMO Chapters 4 and 5 absolutely improved a lot. Can't help but feel like 6 was just a SMALL step backwards, but I was still optimistic about what the future could have held for it.
I thought the whole point of each MLP generation was to act as reboots/overhauls of the same franchise, so why tf did they think a continuation series was a good idea?
They were trying something different that worked (or "worked") for other properties they own in the past (such as how some Transformers series are follow-ups to the previous series but still considered their own "generation")
I think it's a damned if you do damned if you don't situation for them honestly. G4 was so popular people would've been mad if they had left it in the past, but it was also a hindrance to creating their own new story. Suffering from fim success.

I would have liked for Earth Pony magic to be more… subtle, like it’s not obvious that it’s magic. This would have explained why, for thousands of years (meaning including the FIM days), earth ponies were just assumed not to have magic at all. They were assumed to just be more in touch with the land and not need magic. But then you notice that a lot of earth ponies’ jobs include growing plants, like Applejack’s family. And it was just like “huh… these plants seem to be growing really well in their care.” But only now that they’re consciously using this ability as a power is it obviously magical.
Earth ponies *ALWAYS* had magic. Celestial literally says in the season 4 finale that without their magic, earth ponies wouldn't be able to tend the land. G5's 'now they have magic' is a huge retcon.

After all the main villain, the main motive why the main character wants to share friendship and defeat opaline, the reason why the magic was gone for so long, all of that existed because of something that happened off camera from the g4 generation, even the main villain have big connection with 3 relevant characters from g4, anyway i hope that one day you could make a complete review of the show covering every aspect of it uwu

According to someone who worked on the show (on their socials)- they recieved the rigs and models for the ponies directly from Boulder, and because they were originally theaterical quality, they had a LOT more joints and points of motion than Atomic was used to working with. There was some confusion and growing pains involved before they really had an understanding on how to work with the models properly.
I love this video! I agree with a lot of your points. Overall MYM had a massive identity crisis and heaps of wasted potential and talent.

It sucks that most people don't like Ali Conned, because it resonated with me deeply. Yes the episode plot was a little unbelievable and the towns folk were rock solid stupid. However, having been in a situation like that before when I was younger, the episode captured that feeling of being valued more as a novelty than as a person by people you knew and care about really well. Obviously I wasn't being told that being basically objectified was a good thing by my evil magic mirror self, and instead another person I looked up to and trusted, but I feel like they didn't want to make the episode uncomfortable to watch if they made Opaline gain Sunny's trust beforehand since that could leave many uncomfortable implications. The episode is objectively not the best but I personally think the writers did capture what it's like being valued as a thing by a large group of people. I also am not super mad at the townsfolk being stupid here because they kind of had to be in order to make the message and plot work better. Besides I feel like it was early enough in the show for them to get away with it. If bronies can get attached to background characters with constantly changing voice actors, personalities and morals, I think Make your Mark can get away with letting the townsfolk have stupid mob mentality and collective consciousness in order to make an actual point.
I do think it's a shame that this show struggled so bad because you can very clearly tell it's trying so hard and that some kind of outside thing is stopping the writers or animators from making it great. I don't really care about the G4 lore bc me personally if I wanna see or hear about the G4 characters I'm gonna go read or watch G4 stuff. I'm watching G5 for the G5 characters specifically. In the later chapters it really feels like they want to do what G4 did and take elements from past gens and remake them into something new, but the commitment Hasbro made to it being a G4 sequel just chains down the writers so hard. As a mlp fan as a whole, who genuinely enjoys all the generations and collects the toys, some of the episodes in this show feels like a love letter to the franchise. Though also as someone who grew up with G4 specifically, I can see why the lore turns people off completely. The background details referencing past generations makes me extremely happy when I notice them, and it makes me wish that this was rather a sequel series to G1 or its own thing.
I 100% agree. Excluding the stupidity of the townsponies and weird voice editing, the mere concept of Ali-conned is amazing.
A story in which people treat Sunny with more respect just because she’s an alicorn without actually acknowledging her feelings as a person is an INSANELY good idea that could’ve given Sunny massive amounts of growth. As it stands though, Ali-conned is pretty half baked. Like a lot of MYM’s scripts, it weirdly feels like the first draft of a much better story.

Also yeah the episode is very sadly half-baked but I still enjoy it and the show greatly despite all its flaws. I'm honestly just glad they even tried to tackle the subject at all. It's a bit of a guilty pleasure watch when it comes to mlp stuff for me, right up there with the G3 specials.
