- I got back into reading MLP fanfictions recently, and I was reminded of a certain infamous story that pretty much everyone has heard about by now, I mean I’m guessing that’s why you clicked on this video. I’m of course talking about Cupcakes…and upon rereading this story, I was reminded of just how many people were inspired by it to either write their own alternate endings for it, or their own sequel stories based on it. Hell you could even argue that this is the first MLP related creepy pasta.

I’m glad you brought up how Derpy was mishandled in Muffins. As an autistic person it hurts to see neurotypical writers characterize people like us as naive and childlike & who don’t know the world better. It’s something neurodivergent people of all age struggle with, especially when it comes to adults.

It's still insane to me that some people will look at a working class citizen, a full on adult with responsibilities and respect from their peers, and go "Awwwweee look at the lil babie and their cutesty lil attempts at being a big person like me!" Like straight up Derpy is the main mail carrier for all of ponyvile and even if she has bad days, she is still carrying that economy on her back. Pinkie Pie literally works in the Bakery and rents the flat above it, all the main ponies has adult jobs and lives. So to see Derpy singled out in that way always rubbed me wrong as a kid.
My first intro to fanfics was creepypasta fanfics of all things, so the horror genre is where I was introduced to the MLP fandom at large and was instantly reluctant to engage with the series or fandom at all after. I personally get into fandom first, media second, and it took me almost years to finally be able to enjoy it as an adult now. I remember my cousin trying to get me to make ponysonas with them as kid and I dreaded it, now I do it for fun!
There's more to the fandom them it's early days, so much more welcoming and kinder. Still drama of course as all fandoms do, but still I'm happy with it how it worked out. Here's hoping more autistic folks are able to find comfort in MLP again, especially any fellow late diagnosed and/or self diagnosed people too :)

Tbh I think you're focusing on the wrong points here. I think the time period for the creation and prominence of these things (2013-2015 ish), and the community that came with it is the better thing to blame here, rather than the mere fact that these were mlp grimdark fanfics. The mlp community around this time was full of edgelords (mostly from 4chan) who made stuff for shock value, and one of the best ways to do that was to be purposefully offensive. Not to mention that general awareness around mental illness and neurodiversity was...pretty bad in comparison to what we have today (though even now it could be better), so it's no surprise that those two things got together and made a terrible, horribly aged baby.
Love the progression from a graphic description basement being filled with pony corpses to just “yeah yeah we’re in the basement again you know what it looks like” lol
“Red-string corkboad analysis of mlp creepypastas” feels like a video idea simultaneously from 2014 and 2024, I love it
you forgot the part in muffins where pinkie pie, minkie pie, inkie pie, blinkie pie, derpy, applebloom, and babs seed all turn into alicorns and rule over equestria

Butterflies is my favorite cupcakes spinoff - if you can handle bug/decay-type body horror it's genuinely kinda neat. Haunting, creative, and about as in-character as you can get when the premise is Fluttershy being a mass murderer.
While not as popular, there's a fic called "They Deserved It" that uses the idea of nature fighting back, which feels like another manner to make this idea work(granted, it feels like it'd work best from simply being the perspective rather than the instigator, and maybe with a mix of the shock factor from both animal cruelty and attack stories)
As one of the mentioned 10-12 year old kids with unfiltered internet access, I can confirm that yes, it fucks you up.
Especially if you're like me and went out of your way to listen to the REST of Reitanna Seishins stories, mlp or otherwise.
Long story short a lot of fanfiction I should not have been listening to (yes, listen. I listened to the audio versions that the author did on their own channel) and there are a SHIT TON more than just two Derpy sequels.
There's a whole extended universe with flashback stories featuring the pie sisters who then join in on the main story, side adventures that act more like torture porn and add nothing to the overall plot, and even a mini series set in the universe that follows Babs Seed after her debut episode, going back home and killing her three bullies (who are really more like tiny war criminals than actual bullies).
All in all the entire Muffins saga easily surpases 11 hours, and thats only including the stories that Reitanna READ on their channel, there's more that they never recorded for.
So yeah, uh.. I unfortunately know FAR too much about Muffins than I'd like to and to have my past be brought up in a video like this (which is amazingly delivered btw, great writing and the comedic moments hit), while unsurprising, was a bitch slap
Ah, hello comrade. As someone who was the same age and did the same thing, I feel seen by this comment. The only good thing I got out of it was that her series about the mental illnesses personified did allow me a slightly greater degree of self reflection, but that's about it.
Muffins is actually an entire saga that's like 30 chapters long (also poorly written, by a grown-ass woman) and I don't know about the other writers mentioned here, but the writer of Muffins is uh... *extremely problematic.* I have personal experience with the she-devil, and there's an entire rabbit hole. Also, if you're curious, the pronunciation of her username is Ray-tah-nah Say-shin
And uhhh yeah, I was one of those 11-year-old kids who discovered Muffins back in the day due to unfiltered internet access. I'll be 21 in a couple months and I really only like the story ironically :')
I honestly had no idea how to pronounce it lol. I remember hearing about some of the things she did. It’s still a fun story to read if you separate the art from the artist 😅.

Despite the Muffins Saga and its creator aging incredibly poorly, I'd be lying if I said it wasn't completely unenjoyable. Let's Welcome Chaos was a major jumping of the shark though, and don't even get me started on all the unnecessary things from Sting.

my first ever digital art drawing was of pinkie pie with the cutie mark dress, i made it in paint 3d. every now and then i think back on it and get a sense of "why the hell did i know what Cupcakes was at 8 years old and why wasnt i terrified of it" lmao

Boosting the algorithm with this comment but that aside, this was a pretty fun surface view of the cupcakes. I always preferred the concept of Rainbow Factory as a kid because it was at least somewhat less gorey than this (In my perspective) but cupcakes certainly is a classic amongst the mlp creepypastas. It's crazy how many darker and or more sinister takes of these characters come up when at the end of the day it's a cartoon for little children who like colorful ponies. Not that I mind NOW as an adult, but as a kid...it certainly didn't help me sleep at night pft.
I was one of the people who read/looked at fanart of these mlp creepypasta things when I was a kid. I liked them lol.
thats not to say that it was fine that I could easily find this stuff though cause I know it actually scared a lot of kids and also a lot of "grimdark mlp fics" were like... very obviously thinly veiled fetish shit lol.
One time I found one about rainbow dash going through Fluttershy's Torture Labyrinth and it had a graphic description of her pissing herself. even as a kid who liked looking at Evil Bloody Pinkie Pie fanart I thought "ok this is fucking weird"
Yeah, some fics got oddly detailed to the point where looking back as an adult I realize it was mostly weird fetish stuff lol.
Man, there were whole fanfics that were horrible fetish material and I unfortunately got exposed to them as a 12 year old. I always had dark curiosity (I guess you can call it?) and wanted to read the worst of the worst when I saw people talk about it. Two fanfics that haunt me to this day are “Derpy’s Finest Hour” and “Sweet Apple Massacre”. The latter being an AWFUL p*do torture p*rn.
Interesting bit of irony how Derpy, a character portrayed on the autistic spectrum, attacks somepony named Spectrum.
The worst creepypasta I read during the MLP phase was Sweet Apple Massacre. It was just torture p*rn and imprinted some thoughts on my young mind that I'll never be able to get rid of. Cool stuff! Great video. 👍
I remember finding Cupcakes due to people talking about the story and a handful of other MLP creepypastas, funnily enough, it was through Cupcakes that caused me to know of MLP. I eventually found out about the Muffins series, loving it and the creator, too bad Reitanna seishin is problematic to all hell.
Honestly had no idea how problematic they were going into this.

I can really appreciate Pinkie in Derpy’s First Project rocking up to the murder scene with the biggest “she asked for no pickles” energy I’ve ever seen. (Also her saying “my derpy” has some extremely gay vibes)
The portrayal of Derpy in muffins is actually very problematic
It uses a lot of negative stereotypes and the use of the r slur in most conversations where the character is brought up is upsetting to say the least

As a child who was in the fandom and was groomed and desensitized the cupcake animations, this video in my recommended was whiplash. I’m slowly getting back in the fandom because I did enjoy it before things had gone…not good in my later teens.
Either way, this video has some amazing editing and I can’t wait to hear more on your hyperfixation in this. As for the cupcakes being gone is due to the author writing some…suspicious stuff. They started writing stuff about the cutie mark crusaders having *relations* with the adult ponies. They wrote a short about the three minors having a three-way?? There was a video that covered a lot of it but I would have to find it again.
Edit: so the sus stuff written was by cupcake_survivor. They were caught writing a lot of fetishy stuff with the three minors. :(

If you think the Muffins Saga is already insane, then you're only scratching the surface with everything that happens in the series. Strap yourself in because this is gonna be long af.
Apple Bloom and Derpy aren't the only ponies involved in Pinkie's crew "The Bakers". Pinkie's sisters, Limestone and Marble, are also involved, though in the story they're referred to as Inkie and Blinkie (their fannon names at the time). Reitanna however wanted to include Pinkie's third sister who was only mentioned in one of the books at the time, so she made an OC called Minkie Pie. Minkie's backstory had her trapped in her parents' cellar for 20 years because they were incredibly religious. No I am not joking.
One chapter involves Inkie killing a Mary Sue OC called Stella Burst because she wanted her perfect fur. It's nothing too interesting unless you know the story behind this character's creation. Stella was originally made for Reitanna's friend, but after a dispute over whose DA account she'd be posted on, she wrote her into a chapter of Muffins as a way to get back at her.
Sometime after Apple Bloom gets her cutie mark (which in this universe is an apple with a knife stabbed into it) by killing Applejack, the bakers would eventually try to kill the rest of the mane six. They only manage to get Rarity though, as they're caught by police when Fluttershy escapes. However, only the pie sisters are arrested so Apple Bloom and Derpy get the help of Babs Seed (Apple Bloom's cousin) to break them out, leading to Babs becoming a member of the Bakers. This was originally supposed to be the end of the series, but fans pressured Reitanna into continuing the series.
The last 6 chapters in the series were major jumps of the sharks. After forcing Scootaloo and Sweetie Belle into a rigged torture game copied from some horror movie, they enact an actual ass terrorist attack where they wipe out all the guards and hold any living ponies hostage in the abandoned castle in the everfree forest. At one point, it's even revealed that Pinkie manipulated Apple Bloom by attempting to endgame herself when Apple Bloom didn't want to kill someone. And there's the final chapter "Sting" where a spy sent to infiltrate the Bakers fails and gets brutally killed. It's also possibly the grossest chapter in the series so if you plan on reading it, just know that there's a lot of unnecessary stuff at the end for seemingly no reason.
And somehow, this isn't even half of it. Another RUclipsr called Rainbott made a video talking about the fic and they do a better job explaining it then I could in a single yt comment.

Hearing you say "At this point... It's getting a little redundant." About MUFFINS, of all series, knowing how long it is, is honestly one of the funniest things in the whole video.
Honestly this entire video is an absolute joy to watch. The editing is really well-done; the background paired with your tone made the video relaxing and pleasant to watch, and it made the subject matter easier to digest. You're also just an entertaining guy. I appreciate that you don't play everything up in this video, the content speaks for itself.

Seeing this in my recommendations was quite the surprise. Cupcakes was... technically my introduction to horror as a young 13-14 year old. And I was lucky I was at LEAST that old to have found a rather graphic (and since lost to the ether) animation.
It scared me admittedly...
But then I started being drawn to other MLP horror content. My Little Amnesia, Rainbow Factory, Butterflies, and of course Rocket to Insanity.
I never actually read most of these HOWEVER...
One story/series to spawn from the legacy of Cupcakes went on to HEAVILY inspire me as a writer: Silent Ponyville. To this day reading it and it's sequel are like CORE memories for me (I pulled all nighters to read them and have listened to readings MULTIPLE TIMES) and could honestly have a video essay of their own. It taught me about symbolism and the story concept of Healing From Trauma (and of course introduced me to Silent Hill).
Like this story SHAPED me (and the same for a few others).
I'd LOVE to see a video on Rocket to Insanity. As my FAVORITE (and arguably the best) version of it was a long running comic on Deviantart. You can actively see the artist's style form as you go through it. And I especially love how it set out to answer the question of WHY Rainbow was having the nightmares in the first place.

i love cupcakes and all its sequels, it's the main reason i got into mlp in the first place. specifically, the muffins series, which i've been obsessed with since i was 14. i still think it's one of the best things i've ever read, but i stopped supporting the creator some time ago. i have an original mlp inspired world with its own lore, and i have stories in that world that i'm developing. one of them is inspired by cupcakes and one is inspired by rainbow factory :D

I used to be a fan of the muffins saga and the creator behind it. However, not only has the series not aged well, but the author reitanna seishin has done some unforgivable things. Its a rabbit hole to go through, and I am currently making a rise and fall video on her, going into the details of her online life and her eventual downfall.

Here's the sort of ironic thing, , ,I made a comic, hand drawn btw back then when this story was first on RUclips and well, it inspired me to do the Cupcakes and Rainbow factory, then for some reason, Silent Ponyville. And it was a crossover and my OC's, and myself included. But as a dragon not a pony. I don't have it anymore as I tossed it out, , ,so if I wanted to remake it, it would be more planned out.

The only good grimdark/horror mlp fiction I read as a young kid/teen in the mlp fandom (and jfc I read A LOT) was “Something Sweet To Bite.”
There are two parts but god is it worth it. It’s the only one that wasn’t shock horror or fetish shit, just a really good mlp horror that connects to the lore of the show.

This is an awesome video!!! I got into Mlp Creepypastas a while back and have been stuck on the hyperfixation since. And it actually started cause I learned about The Muffin Saga's existence. And it's kinda a... guilty pleassure of mine. Especially as a disabled person who loves Derpy. The series is... a mess, but one I kinda love. It's crazy to believe how many different sequels, alternate endings, and other fan creations from Cupcakes. The story ain't that good, but it helped araise a major part of the Mlp fandom. And I love the Mlp horror scene, especially recently with all the infection AUs, it's really cool!!!
I enjoyed the Rocket to Insanity comic. It was such an interesting take!
gods the muffins saga is so long, i dont believe i ever finished it but i do remember being told the ending was all the bakers (pinkie, applebloom, derpy, limestone pie, marble pie, and obsidian/minkie pie. maud didnt exist in the story sadly

The fic was first posted to EqD on February 24th, 2011 and Sethisto said he'd been putting off posting it "for almost a month," so we can conclude that the fic was likely posted either at the end of January or the very beginning of February.
As someone who had unrestricted internet access since I was pretty young, Cupcakes was honestly the LEAST of my concerns unfortunately. I actually really loved Cupcakes and Rocket to Insanity, it helped me get into my love of gore.
Thankfully, I didn’t learn about Muffins until Rainbott’s videos. Somehow managed to avoid all of.. that… until I was an adult lmao

And this video is the first time I got a summary of the whole thing.

Like, Project Horizons is at least interesting batshit insane pony torture/misery porn.
This literally seems like its literal only appeal is that its the first horror awakening for the children who were present in the fandom, and the subsequent hype and shock value it garnered. (And let's be real, the pony hype could make anything amazing)
And that's just so sad, because the Changelings were right around the corner, and they would bring so much legit Horror material if they had just waited, like, another year.
Also two things people should avoid, especially with marginalizations of groups, is not using AA(V)E, passed off as slang, when not a black person and speciesist animal analogies? Also erasure?

Huh. Here I am down this rabbit hole again. The only Cupcakes-inspired story I ever read was a comic I can't remember the name of. It was an alternate version that had Pinkie being manipulated by the next evil-doer freed from what was supposed to be a permanent prison, show-style. Dude was basically the god of sadism. Wish I could remember what it was called...

When i saw cupcakes for the first time i was scared at first i even went under my bed, but it didn't traumatized me like the others, i was actually interested on it after that i watched a lot of mlp grimdark stuff i still do sometimes
Wow seeing this is whiplash, I was obviously very into MLP when I was 10-12 not so much anymore. I was however hugely into Creepypasta (I have fanart saved to this account from 2014 around the same time I was into MLP and YuGiOh ) but the cupcake animation was particularly scary to me. The muffin saga, not so much. I specifically remember my friends in 5th grade calling me a psychopath for actually enjoying horror and not finding it scary. No just because I was 12 and autistic does not mean I couldn't differentiate fiction and reality, the brain can do that by 5 years old.

I highly recommend the Muffins rewrite on A03 for a more comprehensive sequel with less ick.
Cupcakes was the first mlp creepy pasta I have ever read and still enjoy to this day. Muffins I enjoyed too until I got older and realized Muffins is...horribly written in so many ways especially Derpy's portrayal and as a teenager I knew it was gross.

I read Cupcakes when I was about 10, and I'm actually surprised to hear there was a ton of Derpy-centric sequels. She's always been my favorite pony and I was obsessed with creepypasta/grimdark stuff so I'm surprised I never found out about the Derpy ones.
... & it's not related but I always loved her original voice. It's really cute and charming to me

despite also being a ten year old with unfiltered internet access, i narrowly avoided reading Cupcakes bc the writing on the wall, by horse magic had caught my attention first and after reading it when i was older, i decided i liked the writing on the wall better.
