I also thought it was bizarre how a lot of the time in this series they're torturing children?? Silence is Silver, Broken Tiara, Pinkie Pie's Success, Minkie Pie's Turn and Grudge of a Bad Seed are all about torturing or murdering kids. It doesn't surprise me the author is the way that she is.
SO REAL i mean man if you wanna write about torturing ponies that's whatever, but it's really weird when it's like.... the most brutal torture possible on a TEN YEAR OLD (minkie pie's turn seriously what the fuck)
@@anonymouslucario285Reitanna Seishin, the author of the Muffins series, is an extremely bitter person. The muffins series is basically an extended revenge fantasy for her.
In "sting" chapter, you will be shocked because it is more horrific than the rest of the chapters, especially since there is a part where a child is crying. His turn will come with the bakers, especially since the bakers did not plan to kill this time but rather torture for a while and return them to prison.
As someone who’s genuinely used a bonesaw to saw a cadaver’s head in half (brain included) before for a human anatomy class, the idea of sawing off someone’s hindlegs made me so viscerally “unhappy” to put it lightly. Trust me, it’s not a pleasant noise even if the bone is preserved from years ago. Genuinely one of the worst noises to hear. The sounds of anything bone related in general are so disgusting, even to those with a high tolerance to gore and viscera like myself.
On the topic of kids with unregulated internet access, when I was eight I was listening to this stuff. I'm pretty messed up when it comes to real descriptions of gore now, because the part of my brain that's supposed to take it seriously forgets that it's not fiction.
i think im the opposite. I had unregulated internet access like you and was very young looking at gore and adult content online. But now that im an adult, i view gore as very intense like I can't stomach seeing it even fictional stuff. I watched happy tree friends as a child, and now I can't handle seeing it at all. I also remember not going to class when i was a child due to being traumitized from some horror movies, i couldnt even go to school and as an adult i cant evne look into the dark without having flash backs to the horror movies i watched as a kid.
to add some context to the whole Minkie in the cellar thing, this was a pretty common thing to do with family members that made the family "look bad" in the olden days, you'd lock them in the attic, cellar, or somewhere where nobody could come across them so you could save face without murder. usually it was for family members that were physically disabled, but mental issues (especially in women) could also end up being enough to make the family lock them up.
I used to think this was such an obscure part of the MLP fandom, that me and maybe ten other people knew about it. I don’t know why I thought that. But seeing all these videos come out about the series made me realize how many other unsupervised-internet-access kids were out there like me watching this. I’m very nostalgic of the series despite how weird and gross a lot of it is. Don’t get me started on the creator…
Inky and Blinky were their fanon names after the Pac Man Ghosts! It was also common for their parents to be called Clyde and Sue (iirc Sue is Clyde's name in Ms. Pac Man) back in like 2012
Anyone else remember how Reitanna-Seishin basically admitted that she didn’t even really like MLP, she just liked the grimdark stories people made of it? Or how she said that she wouldn’t find a way to incorporate Maud into the Muffinsverse due to finding her “boring” despite the fact that a killer who feels absolutely nothing while brutally torturing and killing someone is arguably even more unsettling than a killer who takes sadistic glee in doing so?
I remember that too, but I think another reason Maud got axed was because Minkie Pie was already written into the story before Maud's episode came out, and adding a ton of new bakers would've been overkill. I prefer Minkie's character over Mauds, but it would be an interesting idea
I mean, I totally get that, but at the same time, I feel like having her being the seventh baker instead of Babs and revising the Pies’ origin stories to include her would make her feel more distinctive and arguably make more sense in the long run. Why do Cloudy Quartz and Igneous Rock get stricter with Inkie and Blinkie after Pinkie’s departure? Because Maud ran away from home due to not being able to take her parents’ abuse anymore and they don’t want their other two daughters escaping them like she and Pinkie did. Instead of one “mentally challenged” adult and two minors busting the Pie sisters out of jail, it’s a stone-cold hypercompetent adult, a “mentally challenged” adult, and a minor, so on and so forth. Eh, I prefer Maud over Minkie personally, mainly because the former is a more nuanced, multi-faceted character (along with infinitely better autism coded rep compared to Muffins’ Derpy and a much more unique design compared to “Pinkamena palette swap with a few minor things changed”) while the latter is primarily just “2edgy4me emo quiet kid” who comes off as the author’s self-insert at times (not that there’s anything inherently wrong with self-inserts, but with the type of story it is and the way she’s written, it’s most definitely a bad thing) with nothing else to her besides her dynamic with Derpy and a genuinely interesting concept behind her. And I know their true personalities were revealed in the show long after their stories were written, but I greatly prefer Limestone and Marble over Blinkie and Inkie, mainly because they and Maud are actually distinctive from Pinkie (as opposed to all four sisters being “ooh look at how SADISTIC and EVIL and TWISTED we are”) and bounce well off of both her and each other. You could even have them represent different types of serial killers, killing styles, and even trauma responses to help create more variety as opposed to all of them utilizing the exact same style of murder and torture over and over and over again. Then again, I’m a diehard Canon!Pie Sisters fan, so maybe I’m just biased.
@@anonymouswind1 IMO grimdark and dark fan works in general work best if they stay as true to the original characters as they can and/or center around something that could plausibly happen in the source material if things went horribly wrong or if it had a higher age rating. That to me shows that the creator of said dark fanwork has a genuine love for and a deep understanding of the source material to the point where they can twist it into something horrific yet completely possible with the original's setting and characters rather than something that disregards all rules and aspects of the original solely for the sake of writing something shocking and disturbing. Reitanna-Seishin just treats MLP's characters and lore as mere puppets and plot devices she can use to enact as many visceral torture-porn scenarios as she can and it shows. Though to be fair, Reitanna doesn't really seem to know how to play into any interesting horror scenarios her fandoms provide her with. Invader Zim and Doki Doki Literature Club are prime fodder to make cosmic horror fan works out of, and she uses them as a canvas to...make a fluffy UwU ZADR comic and a mod where all the DDLC girls are secretly boys crossdressing. Then again, I suppose more subtle types of horror are harder to write compared to over-the-top gore and torture, so maybe she just prefers to do things the easy way.
I fucking love this. Thank you so much for checking out Muffins! This series is such a a guilty pleasure. While the writing isn't good, it had potential.
@@queeniedramanicole9427 i wouldn't support isaacblooms either considering they allowed their fans to harass reitanna nothingisscary and greenseaturtle. nothingisscary is alive and well from what i heard but I'm legitimately worried for greenseaturtle as they were chased off the internet with one of the things they said before they left feeling suic+dal ruclips.net/video/5o7hZLbPsZY/видео.htmlsi=nAfLR4__Ujvv9tHv reitannas update video has thankfully shown she's fine but regardless of that isaacblooms and their partner i think their names vlade? has shown to be mentally unstable towards their ex friends and has been seen getting involved in serial harassment towards anyone they had a falling out with and this has not changed
Also I noticed a few times you were confused about Minkie not being called Maud, she isn't supposed to be Maud! In fact, she was made before Maud was introduced properly! Minkie was made to be the mysterious 3rd sister that Pinkie was mentioned in one of the books "Pinkie and the party palooza" or smth like that. But Maud was never named until her debut episode. So Minkie isn't Maud :D She is an original OC by Reitanna
Stella burst is another oc she was made for a friend but some reason reitanna takes stella back and decides to kill stella off which is very messed up to think about because reitanna gave stella to the friend so therefore the friend owns stella
@@rosemary3029 Oh yeah dw I know wayyy too much about Rei and muffins as a whole bc its my personal hyperfix lmaooo The Stella burst stuff is so messed up, and she even proceeded to attack another creator bc their OC looked a bit like stellar (they really don't) but Rei has no reason being made bc she doesn't own stellar her ex friend does
Time to make the ending: Luna uses the dream state to make it seem like they were betrayed by the other bakers, when nothing had happened and they all ended up turning on one another, brutally beating each other in the process till only one remains. Pinkie pie, the only element of harmony remaining. All they needed from the beginning was to leave one. Only one should remain, till the shadow of the moon was finally seen. Basically Luna just, sorta merges with nightmare moon having her abilities but not going into the psychotic state NM was in, leading to her just utterly ending Pinkie. Now I have a question, do you think ponies can be resurrected? Cuz I Would REALLY LIKE FLUTTERSHY TO BE ALIVE.
To this day I find funny how I found the author of Muffins not through Muffins but to the other work I assume is theirs: Power Snuffed. Power Snuffed is a Powerpuff Girls grimdark story where the girls develop a new power, this power being rather dangerous and deadly. And they just keep accidentally causing gruesome disaster until reaching a breaking point. And well,it's not surprising to me this author wrote Muffins and this entire saga the way they did.
I remember getting into Muffins with a friend of mine yearssssssss ago, and afterwards she pretty much changed her entire look and even her ponysona to be more like Obsidian lmao. I remember noticing it but never calling her out on it, but tbh Obsidian’s design is pretty good so I don’t blame her
I first listened to Reitanna's own readings of the Muffins series at what must have been age 10 if I'm doing the math right, and let me tell you, the irreparable damage that did to my brain chemistry is immeasurable.
Amazing video on this series As a kid I legit thought I like imagined the muffins series but knowing later on this stuff was all real makes me go "wow this is why I'm so desensitized to gore" Keep doing the good work
I stumbled onto Muffins- when I wanna say I was 12. And it was because I looked up "AppleBloom's Cutiemark" hoping to find a cute fanmade video of fan interpretations of what the CMC's cutiemarks could be- and instead.... I got AppleBloom killing AppleJack and- getting hooked on this series so badly that I read the fanfics that weren't narrated
The whole “no magic in the Murder Basement™️” thing interests me because we see in the MLP movie, even broken horns can still produce magic. Makes me wonder how magic biology would work, as it’s clear that magic is apart of every creature internally, not just unicorns. Horns are just the way to expel unicorn magic, much like a wand. A bit gruesome but I wonder if sawing a horn off completely down to the skull would make a unicorn be unable to use magic completely? The Murder Basement™️ should not make me this interested in pony biology.
third person after rainbott and this one other user that covers these and this is amazing! more muffins covers is great to me. thank you for covering this series!
there's parts I don't like, like the r slur used for example. the parts I liked listing to was the detailed torture as it interested me as it was the better part.
@@rosemary3029yeah I don’t like it either tbh I don’t really like super dark fanfics like this Cupcakes has me permanently traumatized and I refuse to touch stories like it.
There's a fanfic retelling of Muffins on ao3, by Pumpkinpatch, the series being called Muffins Redux/Remake. It's being done in chronological order, tho quite slowly. Not much has been done so far but the writing is much better and weird thing make more sense. I think Minkie was especially done well, highly recommend checking it out :D
@@TheWildCard Once did an internship at a mortuary. And turns out, morticians know morbid things, who would have guessed xD They are also very sweet and friendly, but you also gotta keep a sense of humor at that kind of job to not get depressed, and funfacts like this certainly help!
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE dive into Something Sweet to Bite! It’s my ALL-TIME FAVORITE mlp grimdark, and apparently it *does* have some sequels, including an Equestria Girls story as well?? I’d love to see you cover it!!
The fact that celestia didn't just nuke them is insane. Ik theyre seen as "useless" but theyre not braindead I doubt celestia would let them even see a prison cell
This series is insane, and the amount of stories I've heard of the Author getting into fights with their fans is scary lmao, but other then that I am sad but totally understand why it had to end, even tho the story while super cheesy, over the top gore and straight unrealstic, it really takes you bac to that era of the mlp fandom maybe one day a fan will rise up and finish the story for us, a story that cna be satisfying for everyone, but we have to wait and see, great video tho dude!! keep it up
If your looking for something similar to Muffins id recommend Rainbott's icing on the cake fanfiction/AU, it's a rework of the Muffins stories and it's pretty neat :]
my claim to fame here is that my art was the only fanart Reitanna ever used in a Muffins narration! It was the art featured in The Mad Musings of Obsidian Pie: Happiness. She credited my deviantart in the description, but did not ask permission before using the art. I was 12 at the time. Thanks Rei! :D
and wow I just realized that since she's made the videos members-only, she removed my credit from the description. actually, F*CK you Reitanna! you write inc*st smut and defend s*icide how charming of you! wildcard did you know the mad musings of obsidian pie was actually basically Rei's personal journal under the guise of character writing? when you said the musings were getting a bit pretentious, it's because it was all Reitanna's personal feelings! she's incredibly pretentious and spends all her time online playing whackamole with her naysayers. she should have left the internet years ago for her own good tbh
A fanfic cant mess up your brain. Its just one of thoae things youtubers like to bable anout like (this ruined a whole generation+ edgy click bait) trust me i gre up with newgrounds and the stuff i have seen there is like 1000 times more extreme.
Ever time i come back to this serie i get concerned that younger me was so obsessed with jt because theres uh alot of stuff i should not havw been watching as a kid
Okay, as someone who gained a MASSIVE hyperfixation on this fic last year (cause of Rainbott's video on it) and even has gained a bit of an audience myself from the few times I've talked about the series online (mainly here on YT and Tumblr) This is a great deep dive into the Muffins Saga. For me, this is a major guilty pleassure of mine. I've even gained attatchment to Minkie a bit (despite well... a lot of her characterization). I was listening to this in bits throughout the day and it was just such a good listen!!! It was honestly nice hearing you finally talk about ALL of the Muffins Saga and in good depth!!!
Yeah, looking back at Muffins (I listen to it since I was 15-16 yrs of age) It is not a good story.. like yeah, it's fun to come back and listen to it but it obviously doesn't age very well.. and it does not help the fact that Reitanna's version of Derpy Hooves is uhh ableist
I know it's not the subject of the video but I'd argue the redub of that scene is what made it seem like disabled people need to be coddled. Just listen to how differently Rainbow Dash talks to her. In the original she sounded annoyed but in the redub she sounded almost condescending.
I felt the same! Especially since it was redubed after I had seen it once as a kid, I didn't understand why Rainbow Dash would be so cruel to her peer after being shown to not treat anyone differently other than to support them and their needs once she understands how to do so... made me stop watching as a kid to be honest.
Everyone says its bullshit the bakers beat the Royal Guard army but like have they ever done ANYTHING right ever? For gods sake they get duped by CAKE half the time why not cupcakes?
Thank you for contributing to early-MLP nostalgia! I have really enjoyed binge-watching your videos. If you ever get the urge to tackle Grimdark again, Something Sweet To Bite by Knackerman has a really interesting story line with sequels that dive into rather interesting territory. I would be interested to see your take on it as a whole! Anyway, great videos. Keep it up! :)
it's insane how much of this story i forgot, but watching this reminded me that i was quite literally 9 years old when i watched/listened to muffins, pretty much the entire series, at that. i now remember why i basically repressed it, it was so creatively gory and nasty.
i have heard of this series once by one youtuber and decided to check this video.. went into this completely blind and WOW. not a big person in grimdark fanfics, but this was interesting as hell! definitely saw the potential in this story, too bad people forced to create more but y’know.. the internet is the internet
Oh wow RUclips recommended me this video, sweet. We meet again. o/ Firstly, I have to commend you for handling Muffins and its related stories with a lot of grace and criticizing the work without bashing the author. The subject matter is definitely a *lot* for today's climate, but it's also a time capsule of sorts for what the fandom scene online was like back then. The friend I mentioned in your previous video mentioning this story and other grimdarks also appreciates your deep dive, as it's a refreshing review compared to the other videos they've watched where it was less about criticism and more so bashing Reitanna and needlessly nitpicking every little thing that happens (like Rainbott's, that was made in bad faith). They said it best: "You don't bite into a sequel series of cupcakes and then get mad when it's a sequel series of cupcakes." I've also been reading the comments about the "rewrite" of this series, and imo I find that kind of thing REALLY disrespectful. I understand that the work is full of a number of tasteless content (i.e. how Derpy was handled and just the portrayal of autism in general, of course this can be chalked up to Reitanna not knowing any better and not having gotten her own diagnosis at that time yet (and I say this as a person who is also on the spectrum!)), however rewriting the series so that it can be "better enjoyed" and is more suitable to the current landscape palette absolutely erases everything the original artist set out to convey. And, if you ARE familiar with Reitanna's personal life, a lot of this was definitely venting on her part regarding things that should've never been made public in the first place given how unwell she is (and the fandom hassling her to continue the series didn't help things either). She also never wanted minors to interact with her work, yet minors are basically the embodiment of that one DW meme of "That sign won't stop me because I can't read!" and did it anyway, so that's not her fault. There's a lot we can learn from Muffins, but I don't think a rewrite will help with that. And as mentioned previously, I don't like Rei very much. This is less white knighting and more like bringing up things other people are neglecting to say. Overall, this was very pleasant to sit through! I don't normally sit and listen to fanfic reviews or deep dives, but I'm glad I clicked on this one. :]
Fun Fact: The way Minkie talks in the Mad Musings, is based on former WWE wrestler, Bray Wyatt (R.I.P.), who was, in his first role, a bayou cult leader. Knowing that and being a big fan of him, it's really fun and weird, how good Reitanna immitated his way of talking.
Rainbott actually made a rewrite of this entire saga that fixes a lot of issues this series had, such as the ableism that came with Derpy’s writing and the uncomfortable grooming aspects of Pinkie having Apple Bloom as her apprentice.
i’ve been a fan of muffins since before minkie was even introduced!! that was 2014-ish. i’m so glad this series is making a return and getting rewritten by other fans, it’s genuinely one of my top special interests of all time
God, I used to _fall asleep_ to this, when I was like... 12. Absolutely insane that I was able to just access this and that I _slept to it as a kid!_ This is an extremely well made video, very entertaining! Thank you so much for sharing this!
Yo I wasn’t expecting you to check these out!! Also bringing to light how dark and concerning this series is. It’s funny how wild it is but sad knowing the writer used this series to groom so many children into these f*tishes and openly groomed them to the point to talk to said minors :( To all the minors who were hurt by the writer who dipped of the earth, I’m so sorry. I’m really happy Rainbott is fixing the characters where they can ebcause man the og is so gross
This was a trip, I completely forgot how bananas these stories got. You deserve a trophy! I know you're taking a horror break but if recommend when you're ready the "something sweet to bite" series. About this urban legend monster called "the candy mare"
"leaving deep cuts on the timid mare" the way you pronounce it makes me hear "DeepCuts" and i instantly think of Splatoon 3. dunno if this is in any way an actual point to make, but hey, comment for the algorithm~!
I tried rewatching a bunch of these a few years ago but they were so bad and just to gory and it felt like well torture p*rn, its weird cause i used to watch these ALL the time when i was a kid...
Yooo its a deep dive! Ive been into muffins ever since i was around 10 or 12, and I'm 21 now, and with all thats happened lmao its been a wild ride. Excited to start the video!
8:28 a little comment for around this timestamp. I think I heard that because of equestrian magic, pony blood tastes sweet in the muffins universe! I could be wrong, through
You didnt mention it inthe segment, so I wanted to say that Stella Burst and her episode actually had some controversy off of it! I dont remember it quite well, so i might be wrong, but im pretty sure that Stella was originally a gift oc that Reitanna made and then gave to a friend. And then that friend wronged her in some way, so she decided to take the oc back, and rhen torture her brutally. It's so interesting to me, its kind of funny, like, why go this far? Why formally take the oc back instead of just torturing her as is? Its such an enigma to me lol
While the side stories may seem like just side stories and filler stuff, it does help with keeping the overarching story from sounding like events, relationships, names, and connections to other characters and events just come out of no where and sound like they're simply there for plot and with no fleshing out. But with the side stories present, it helps flesh out these things. (The stuff about Bab Seed and Minkie Pie's obsession for examples) And the stories in Muffins have a lot of thought for doing this by making the overarching story make sense in the linear timeline instead of just throwing in stuff at random to continue the story in a certain way with no explanation on why those things (connections, relationships, character placement) exist and where they fit in and when they happened.. hh
@@TheWildCard Thanks! I also just watched your videos about Rocket to insanity and Cupcakes. I really enjoyed them, you are indeed a crazy man 👍 Keep up the good work!
My mom had both hips replaced years ago. Apparently, one of the options when you’re signing up for the surgery, during which they have to cut off part of your hip bone!! You can opt to STAY AWAKE just enough to be able to see and hear but not move or feel anything. No, she did not choose to stay awake during the procedure. But it’s interesting to think about! I wonder what the author would choose to do if they were having that surgery done. It would make for good research I guess?
I really want to say a series you may find really interesting may be Silent Ponyville there’s quite a few but obviously it’s a grimdark that takes inspiration from Silent Hill and MLP. The writer of it put a lot of effort into it and I know that the first two full stories for it follow Pinkie then Fluttershy overcoming and coming to terms with childhood trauma
If you guys think the Muffins series was crazy, you should read Rarity's Torture on Fimfiction by rainbowfucktory, it's a shotty ripoff of the muffins series featuring rarity/her family, and the author has schizophrenia. It makes an..interesting read to say the least.
Can you elaborate on why the author having schizophrenia would mean anything? Most schizophrenic people aren’t violent maniacs at all, just so you know.
Guess I know what I'm gonna be reading on my channel after my fan made Muffins chapter Edit: I found it in their about page but it'snot showing up under their stories. You happen to know where I can find it?
Someone named IsaacBlooms has narrated a few muffins stories reitanna never bothered to narrate, you should check them out if you haven't seen the let's welcome chaos stuff already!
this is SUCH a good video coming from someone who barely remembers any of the original mlp grimdarks from the height of the fandom!! watching this video again (with headphones this time, no freaking way) made me actually realize there's this one background song used in the intro segment that i SWEAR i've heard before,, i could've sworn it's from like a sonic game or SOMETHING
OK I haven't watched this yet but I'm so excited to do so. I grew up on muffins and I do love the story as goofy as it is, and I do love seeing the rewrites people do and even started making my own rewrite (but with humans instead of ponies lmao) BUT there's something I wanna say. I always found it hilarious how Rei said shit like 'I won't add Maud coz she's boring and it would also be overkill' and then proceeded to add Babs💀
Ah. I remember obseseively checking reitanas youtube for new narrations when I was little... And downloading the already exisitinf ones on a mp3 player so I could listen to them on family road trips. And listening to them to fall asleep before I discovered asmr videos . Shout out middle school me being obsessed with muffins and fallout equestria

I’ve just barely started the video but I want to say that I’m really happy you’re covering this series. It makes me feel like I didn’t traumatize myself for nothing 🎉
If you’re looking for another grimdark series to tackles I would highly recommend “Friendship is Tragic” There are narrations on the Scribbler Productions channel
I like Muffins as something to just cringe at and make fun of, but Reitanna Seishin, the creator, actively makes everything she writes horrible just by being a terrible person herself....except for Powersnuffed, which isn't terrible.
For anyone who doesn’t know, Stella burst, the victim in “Inkie’s Stellar obsession” was actually an OC of one of Reitanna’s ex friends. Allegedly, the friend “betrayed” Reitanna, so she killed the oc…disturbing much?
Yeah... I never read muffins I don't think but I was interested in cupcakes and the other "grimdark" shit. It was morbidly fascinating, like creepypastas were around that time to me. I think it's cause I was really sheltered, and the idea of reading/watching stuff my heavily helicopter parents wouldn't approve of was like, a bit of rebellion on my part. That and the appeal of edgyness to you just sorta... Comes naturally in your young teens sometimes. I've heard... Things... About Muffins. And I'm hype to watch this vid cause from what I've heard, shit's fucked.
Did you know IsaacBlooms actually narrated some chapters of muffins that reitanna never narrated? They were both posted this year, you should check him out!
ahh watching videos about muffins takes me back…i was a preteen listening to all the audio dramas of it while i would play hours of splatoon. i guess i got really attached to the characters, and was morbidly fascinated by the torture methods the author came up with there’s sooo many problems i have with it now, for pretty obvious reasons. i think one of the main ones is just how much the story DID go off the rails after Reitanna started it up again. the story could no longer reach a satisfying conclusion because the Bakers weren’t truly treated as villains. like you said, the obvious conclusion would have been it ending at their arrest, or ending with Celestia climactically stopping them, but the story treated the Bakers losing as either a tragedy or something completely unfathomable. i really enjoy Rainbott’s rework of the story, because they found a way to have the Bakers lose, while still letting the characters readers got attached to have happier, satisfying endings. nowadays when i think about Muffins, i find myself imagining that version of it instead
This is a great deep dive! The Muffins Saga is a wild yet mind-numbing tale, so I astound you for managing to get through it! Thank you for all your hard work! With that being said, since lots of people are bringing up their own bizarre MLP fanfic they'd like for you to cover, allow me to throw my hat into the ring; Waking Nightmares by KnightMysterio. Not really a grimdark fic, more so grimdark adjacent, but it's burnt into my head for being, for lack of a better term, the world's most extremely early 2010s fanfic. To put "extremely early 2010s" into perspective, the fic is a four-way crossover between MLP, Team Fortress 2, Doctor Who, and creepypastas (as in both MLP grimdark fics and stuff like Slenderman and Jeff the Killer), and quite frankly I think that is the most early 2010s mix of fandoms you could muster. It was actually quite popular back when it was still updating, albeit far from on the same level as the other MLP fics you've covered on this channel, updating with both the MLP and Team Fortress 2 fandoms (helped by the fact the fic was deliberately written to be "beginner friendly", so both a MLP fan with no context of Team Fortress 2 and a Team Fortress 2 fan with no context of MLP could understand and enjoy it), but now it's almost completely forgotten. I feel like it could be an interesting rabbit hole to dive down, although as a fair warning, the author throws around extremely sensitive topics with all the tact of a bulldozer, which is to say less than none. Tread carefully.
its so sad how the creator so poorly depicted derpy in my opinion- its horrible how she was depicted as a child and stupid when as a mlp character she's probably just got autism or something, its sad how the creator was harassed too, and that the story had so much potential and what not. if anyone however disagree's thats fine just be respectful and simply ignore me ^^! i'm not looking to debate that i'm 'wrong' or what not, because this is just my opinion and my feelings
I dislike how she progressively got worse and worse throughout the series, she was more or less normal at first, by the end she talked like a complete child. It was a gross depiction of how she thinks people with disabilities act and communicate with others.
55:13 you are actually wrong! The glass is just really strong and most just have coverings like huge plastic slabs on the outside of rooms windows so you can’t see anything, but that’s just my personal experiences
@@TheWildCard Also, in that specific story, they mention that only the common room of the ward lacks barred windows due to ponyville hospital not having a lot of high risk cases.
You wanna read a good grim dark with a twisted story and satisfying conclusion read the experiments of twilight sparkle Though I will warn you its muffins if muffins was more effective.
I really liked it, but what I didn't like is the fact that some potion made her evil. To me, the main scare factor was that Twilight is completely sane and aware of what's happening. But then they threw in that weird potion that made her eyes glow/go red (don't really remember), and it just kinda ruined it for me
If i remember correctly, I watched these on my tablet when i was like 11-12? Shit was wild and definitely warped my perception of what was normal in media
Pie sisters feel too much like reskins of each other. Especially Inkie and Blinkie. They have different voices in the narration but I would still get them mixed up. They feel like more generic versions of Pinkie while Minkie feels like Pinkie but Edgy. And also a cringe self-insert.
@@TheWildCard Well there’s a lot of stories out there here just three that I think could make really good deep dive videos because they’re just not one story a whole series like how you seem to be covering them. One would be Rainbow Factory because not only is it one of the other top MLP darkfics/ classic MLP creepypasta’s along with Cupcakes. it has some sequels or like alternative sequel, alternative endings, a bunch of random media and AU’s around it. Also the fact the whole story was inspired by a good yet pretty vague song and then it just became massive, making other songs and everything is really impressive to me. Definitely tons to check out there. Another I would think of to do is An Apple Sleep Experiment and its sequel that came out a little bit ago called Another Apple Sleep Experiment. Not only are they just really good stories but they definitely have a strange psychological thriller/horror feel to me. It’s kinda hard to describe but feel like when you see it you might get what I’m talking about. An Apple Sleep Experiment was already a really good story, but I am so glad they made a sequel that was also really good. And the last one that I would label for kind of more recent stuff and you could really go on a full deep dive with this, considering all the stories would be the MLP infection content that has been going around everywhere. there’s actually a story kinda in the early times of the fandom and MLP darkfics in general called The Cough which I’ve seen people say was either the inspiration for this trend coming back or just a random precursor to this random infection trend. Again there are so many stories and random AU’s to this idea alone that would be interesting to investigate. Thank you and again keep up the good work😊
As a kid I binged it up till the twilight asylum part, stuff was wildly bizarre and entertaining. Looking back on it, it's pretty funny. That fluttershy episode for some reason was such a shocker for me as a kid, I thought she had plot armor. But its pretty obvious she was gonna die lol
So! I actually had a nasty spat with her a few years ago about the writing, cuz honestly some parts are pretty bad even by my standards back then and the spat was so nasty she blocked me. No ill will from me these days, just was a thing back in the days.
Reitanna is generally just a bad person, she's learning (very VERY slowly) however. I'm not defending her actions at all, you're right to be annoyed with her childish behavior. We can all just hope she changes for the better however, that's what we can hope for everyone
@@catloaf8716 Well I can't say I was a saint in that spat either. Haven't really seen anything or interacted with her after that, didn't care for her writing and her 'whispering rant' to SUDDENLY SCREAMING! Bs but that's just me. Like I said it was a stupid spat and I haven't really thought about her much since until this video popped up on my timeline.
@@catloaf8716 I never really considered it a drama. It was a nasty spat where I was a bit of a twat, not gonna lie. She did bring up some points that I ignorant on at the time like unipolar, but the writing was still shit at times. Again, not gonna pretend I was a saint but I'm also not gonna blow it up into anything huge. Just a nasty spat I forgot about until a few months ago.
On top of that, Reitanna is an extreme ephebophile. The woman really should not be allowed on the internet or within 1 mile of a school zone.
SO REAL i mean man if you wanna write about torturing ponies that's whatever, but it's really weird when it's like.... the most brutal torture possible on a TEN YEAR OLD (minkie pie's turn seriously what the fuck)
What do you mean by that?
Like who writes these storiee 😭, how can people wake up and decide to write this stuff? Honestly its commendable to a degree but jesus christ
@KaiyaK198 what mean who? Horror authors?
On the topic of kids with unregulated internet access, when I was eight I was listening to this stuff. I'm pretty messed up when it comes to real descriptions of gore now, because the part of my brain that's supposed to take it seriously forgets that it's not fiction.
Yup. We all got desensitized to it
Yeah, same
SAME I've turned 18 this year. im surprised the videos never got age restricted
What's wrong with being desensitized to gore?
i think im the opposite.
Me at my funeral: Casual
Me Watching another person make a deep dive on the Muffins Saga: Formal AF
to add some context to the whole Minkie in the cellar thing, this was a pretty common thing to do with family members that made the family "look bad" in the olden days, you'd lock them in the attic, cellar, or somewhere where nobody could come across them so you could save face without murder. usually it was for family members that were physically disabled, but mental issues (especially in women) could also end up being enough to make the family lock them up.
Don’t get me started on the creator…
you put into words exactly what i was thinking too
I'm new to this series, does the creator have a weird past or something?
Inky and Blinky were their fanon names after the Pac Man Ghosts! It was also common for their parents to be called Clyde and Sue (iirc Sue is Clyde's name in Ms. Pac Man) back in like 2012
*sees the cliffhanger ending.*
*sighs and opens google docs.*
You know what you have to do lmao
Ya finished yet?
I just straight up don't like her bc she drew child porn and made incest stories that one time-
Damn...Grimdarks may have been my introduction to MLP but I at least watched the show and ended up really liking it
@@anonymouswind1 IMO grimdark and dark fan works in general work best if they stay as true to the original characters as they can and/or center around something that could plausibly happen in the source material if things went horribly wrong or if it had a higher age rating.
I agree, it had a lot of potential but was still enjoyable.

Minkie was made to be the mysterious 3rd sister that Pinkie was mentioned in one of the books "Pinkie and the party palooza" or smth like that. But Maud was never named until her debut episode. So Minkie isn't Maud :D She is an original OC by Reitanna
Yeah, I realize by the end that they’re separate characters lol.
Stella burst is another oc she was made for a friend but some reason reitanna takes stella back and decides to kill stella off which is very messed up to think about because reitanna gave stella to the friend so therefore the friend owns stella

Time to make the ending:
Luna uses the dream state to make it seem like they were betrayed by the other bakers, when nothing had happened and they all ended up turning on one another, brutally beating each other in the process till only one remains.
I want Fluttershy to still be alive too :(
Imagine if muffins ended at silence is silver because Applebloom wasn’t successful in reviving Pinkie.
It would call for a celebration.
And well,it's not surprising to me this author wrote Muffins and this entire saga the way they did.
i watched power snuffed after muffins but I really like power snuffed
I remember getting into Muffins with a friend of mine yearssssssss ago, and afterwards she pretty much changed her entire look and even her ponysona to be more like Obsidian lmao. I remember noticing it but never calling her out on it, but tbh Obsidian’s design is pretty good so I don’t blame her
Honestly Minkie is just a dark version of pinkie pie with some edge 😭
I first listened to Reitanna's own readings of the Muffins series at what must have been age 10 if I'm doing the math right, and let me tell you, the irreparable damage that did to my brain chemistry is immeasurable.
Amazing video on this series
As a kid I legit thought I like imagined the muffins series but knowing later on this stuff was all real makes me go "wow this is why I'm so desensitized to gore"
Keep doing the good work
I stumbled onto Muffins- when I wanna say I was 12.
Maybe the magic becomes unregulated, producing unpredictable bursts of magic if a unicorn try to channel their magic without an horn.
@@greenstarlover1Yeah, that, but I also imagined it would be extremely painful. Like trying to lift something heavy with a broken arm

my claim to fame here is that my art was the only fanart Reitanna ever used in a Muffins narration! It was the art featured in The Mad Musings of Obsidian Pie: Happiness. She credited my deviantart in the description, but did not ask permission before using the art. I was 12 at the time. Thanks Rei! :D

Fair point.
I felt the same! Especially since it was redubed after I had seen it once as a kid, I didn't understand why Rainbow Dash would be so cruel to her peer after being shown to not treat anyone differently other than to support them and their needs once she understands how to do so... made me stop watching as a kid to be honest.
Everyone says its bullshit the bakers beat the Royal Guard army but like

it's insane how much of this story i forgot, but watching this reminded me that i was quite literally 9 years old when i watched/listened to muffins, pretty much the entire series, at that. i now remember why i basically repressed it, it was so creatively gory and nasty.
i have heard of this series once by one youtuber and decided to check this video.. went into this completely blind and WOW. not a big person in grimdark fanfics, but this was interesting as hell! definitely saw the potential in this story, too bad people forced to create more but y’know.. the internet is the internet

Oh wow RUclips recommended me this video, sweet. We meet again. o/
Firstly, I have to commend you for handling Muffins and its related stories with a lot of grace and criticizing the work without bashing the author. They said it best: "You don't bite into a sequel series of cupcakes and then get mad when it's a sequel series of cupcakes."
I've also been reading the comments about the "rewrite" of this series, and imo I find that kind of thing REALLY disrespectful.
Oh my god...I knew it sounded like a Bray promo. RIP, gone too soon.
Rainbott actually made a rewrite of this entire saga that fixes a lot of issues this series had, such as the ableism that came with Derpy’s writing and the uncomfortable grooming aspects of Pinkie having Apple Bloom as her apprentice.
I love her rework so much. especially how she handled apple bloom's arc of breaking out of pinkie's influence.
In the MLP show, the princesses weren't even useful in any battle, but I didn't expect them to be useless even in fanfiction ...
i’ve been a fan of muffins since before minkie was even introduced!! that was 2014-ish. i’m so glad this series is making a return and getting rewritten by other fans, it’s genuinely one of my top special interests of all time

My theory on "how does one cook blood and meat into cupcakes?" Is that sense they're magical colorful ponies. They're sweet.
That is hilariously petty if true.
You're gonna get a lot of watch time. I like to rewatch videos a lot. 3rd time watching right now
While the side stories may seem like just side stories and filler stuff, it does help with keeping the overarching story from sounding like events, relationships, names, and connections to other characters and events just come out of no where and sound like they're simply there for plot and with no fleshing out. But with the side stories present, it helps flesh out these things. (The stuff about Bab Seed and Minkie Pie's obsession for examples) And the stories in Muffins have a lot of thought for doing this by making the overarching story make sense in the linear timeline instead of just throwing in stuff at random to continue the story in a certain way with no explanation on why those things (connections, relationships, character placement) exist and where they fit in and when they happened.. hh

I LOVE THIS VIDEO!!
Thank you so much for looking into my favourite series of all time
Someone named IsaacBlooms has narrated a few muffins stories reitanna never bothered to narrate, you should check them out if you haven't seen the let's welcome chaos stuff already!
Perfect video to listen to while finishing my drawings, love it as always
this is SUCH a good video coming from someone who barely remembers any of the original mlp grimdarks from the height of the fandom!! watching this video again (with headphones this time, no freaking way) made me actually realize there's this one background song used in the intro segment that i SWEAR i've heard before,, i could've sworn it's from like a sonic game or SOMETHING
You’re right, It’s from Sonic Rush
every time i see someone talk about this i think of being like ?? 9 ?? years old playing minecraft and building while listening to these 😭
OK I haven't watched this yet but I'm so excited to do so. I grew up on muffins and I do love the story as goofy as it is, and I do love seeing the rewrites people do and even started making my own rewrite (but with humans instead of ponies lmao)
BUT there's something I wanna say.
55:21 referencse to two of my favourite media properties in a row LMAO anwaysy these videos are fab been super enjoying seeing these release and was super excited to see this one was an hour long ! Thanks Mr Wild Card c:
I’ve just barely started the video but I want to say that I’m really happy you’re covering this series. It makes me feel like I didn’t traumatize myself for nothing 🎉
If you’re looking for another grimdark series to tackles I would highly recommend “Friendship is Tragic” There are narrations on the Scribbler Productions channel
we are SO back i love this video
I like Muffins as something to just cringe at and make fun of, but Reitanna Seishin, the creator, actively makes everything she writes horrible just by being a terrible person herself....except for Powersnuffed, which isn't terrible.
For anyone who doesn’t know, Stella burst, the victim in “Inkie’s Stellar obsession” was actually an OC of one of Reitanna’s ex friends. Allegedly, the friend “betrayed” Reitanna, so she killed the oc…disturbing much?
That's actually crazy behavior 0_0
I would unironically pay someone to remake the whole series.
A RUclipsr named Rainbott did! It's much better I highly recommend it
IsaacBlooms is also rewriting the story to!
@@Ravenbloom57868really? Can I have a link?
Yay it’s muffins, this is gonna bring back some nostalgia
Did you know IsaacBlooms actually narrated some chapters of muffins that reitanna never narrated? They were both posted this year, you should check him out!
@@catloaf8716I do know actually, I follow Isaac. Mainly because reitanna locked her narrations behind a paywall
ahh watching videos about muffins takes me back…i was a preteen listening to all the audio dramas of it while i would play hours of splatoon. i guess i got really attached to the characters, and was morbidly fascinated by the torture methods the author came up with
there’s sooo many problems i have with it now, for pretty obvious reasons. i think one of the main ones is just how much the story DID go off the rails after Reitanna started it up again. the story could no longer reach a satisfying conclusion because the Bakers weren’t truly treated as villains. like you said, the obvious conclusion would have been it ending at their arrest, or ending with Celestia climactically stopping them, but the story treated the Bakers losing as either a tragedy or something completely unfathomable. i really enjoy Rainbott’s rework of the story, because they found a way to have the Bakers lose, while still letting the characters readers got attached to have happier, satisfying endings. nowadays when i think about Muffins, i find myself imagining that version of it instead
I'm glad that someone made a rewritten story to where things are a lot better
Funfact: obsidian was made before maud's episode so obsidian was initially the fourth sister.
he returns when we need him most
O shit, didn't realize I wasn't subscribed! Thought I subscribed at the cupcakes vid
Glad to see the deep dive vids have continued!!
its so sad how the creator so poorly depicted derpy in my opinion- its horrible how she was depicted as a child and stupid when as a mlp character she's probably just got autism or something, its sad how the creator was harassed too, and that the story had so much potential and what not. if anyone however disagree's thats fine just be respectful and simply ignore me ^^! i'm not looking to debate that i'm 'wrong' or what not, because this is just my opinion and my feelings
I dislike how she progressively got worse and worse throughout the series, she was more or less normal at first, by the end she talked like a complete child. It was a gross depiction of how she thinks people with disabilities act and communicate with others.
It’s fun looking back on old fan ideas of FIM that don’t hold any water now
45:33 God herself could not even beat Bug Lady back in season 2, and after that didn't do much in the entire show lmao.
Fair enough XD
55:13 you are actually wrong! The glass is just really strong and most just have coverings like huge plastic slabs on the outside of rooms windows so you can’t see anything, but that’s just my personal experiences
Interesting. Thanks for the correction :)
@@TheWildCard Also, in that specific story, they mention that only the common room of the ward lacks barred windows due to ponyville hospital not having a lot of high risk cases.
You wanna read a good grim dark with a twisted story and satisfying conclusion read the experiments of twilight sparkle
Though I will warn you its muffins if muffins was more effective.
I have read that one. It’s disgusting but good.
I really liked it, but what I didn't like is the fact that some potion made her evil. To me, the main scare factor was that Twilight is completely sane and aware of what's happening. But then they threw in that weird potion that made her eyes glow/go red (don't really remember), and it just kinda ruined it for me
Time to write unhinged stories for my fandom :D
If i remember correctly, I watched these on my tablet when i was like 11-12? Shit was wild and definitely warped my perception of what was normal in media
Based on Ma and Pa Pie's plan, I see that Equestria has not their own version of Edgar Allen Poe if they think that loophole will work.
Pie sisters feel too much like reskins of each other. Especially Inkie and Blinkie. They have different voices in the narration but I would still get them mixed up. They feel like more generic versions of Pinkie while Minkie feels like Pinkie but Edgy. And also a cringe self-insert.
These vids are great! Keep up the good work! There are some other stories I really feel should get these deep dive vids
I take suggestions :)
Thank you and again keep up the good work😊
It seems my childhood has come to haunt me today
Murder Basement being the MVP
Oh hell yes I'm so down for this
I ADORE THE MUFFINS SAGA THANK YOU???
No problem :)
Nobody was safe lol
wait, how come this guy only have 3.65k subs, man u are one underrated channel❤
@@TheRealSparkplugTheFox yeah, valid. I was a part of that drama too, it was kinda tiring in my opinion 😭. It's over now at least lol
