Thank you so much for not beating up on the "salon" route! I'm a semi-professional loctician (self-trained, multiple methods, freelance), and I get so tired of hearing everyone talk badly about ALL "professionally-made" locks! I personally am a loctician who will NEVER EVER use wax (I got suckered in on my own first set, then saw the horrors of wax when I cut them off. NEVER AGAIN - wax is not for dreads!). Yes, I use a crochet hook (depending on hair type), but I have also spent a good portion of my adult life testing hooks and methods on different types of hair, so I don't shred hair. I attach extensions, because why the heck shouldn't people have long dreads if they want it? Not everyone can afford to start locks with the neglect method - some people need to look halfway decent for work or school or just because they feel like it (I'm also a model and performing mermaid, so at least part of my dreads needed to be presentable at first). Whatever way someone chooses to start their dreads is up to them and there's no right or wrong - except wax, that's always wrong - and we're all human, so no-one should be judging others' dreads or methods :)
To be honest, my hair has always been extremely knotty no matter how many times a day I would brush it...so about a month and a half ago I stopped brushing my hair and let it dread naturally. I guess you could basically call them "true" neglect dreads or whatever lol, however, I do not regret them at all and they are maturing pretty quickish. You're videos help alot!
I went to a salon (dreadfactory, pretty well-known in Germany) because I wantet a good base for my dreadlocks. I still don't know anyone else with dreadlocks and I didn't want to do it myself because I can't see the back of my head (obviously :D) and if my friends would have done it wrong, I think they would not be my friends anymore! :D And it was a lot faster, it took me 6 hours and now I have 43 great dreadlocks without any wax or other bad stuff and I who that I can ask the guy who made them, if I have any problems.
I just have one dread, and I started it myself because I like my smooth hair but I wanted just one dread before I head to college. It was a pain in the booty trying to figure out what was best to use for my hair, but now I've got the hang of it! Love your dreads by the way, some of the best I've seen!
I got mine done by Kath, who runs locked up dreadlocks in perth using the crochet method 1 week ago, and am really happy with them :) The journey has begun!! Your videos were an amazing help when I was considering beginning my dreadlocks journey, so thank you!!
First off, I can watch your videos all day long!!! Thank you so much for all of the information you provide. I know when I started my journey, you helped a lot! I did the 'Twist and PULL' method (I refuse to say rip :-P ) and it took me 7 days to complete. I did it myself while watching lots of movies! They are now 15 months old and I could not be happier with them! I have a comment for the people who so whole heartedly defend one way over the other and get angry about it; Why must you get so defensive and argumentative when someone makes their Dreads a different way? You prefer neglect method, she prefers back comb, they prefer twist and pull. It's personal preference really and for you to judge someone for starting their dreads a different way is absolutely insane. Have you tried starting dreads with each method and compared the outcome on your own head? Oh, no? Well then you have no idea what way is 'better'. You only know what method YOU would prefer. I wish there weren't so many elitists in the dread community. Everyone is beautiful in their own way no matter what and it goes the same for dreads. I am glad I didn't do neglect! That amount of patience isn't my thing. Also, I would much rather prefer not to look like a rat made a nest in my hair. (Although I did have some bird nests, I am sure ;-) )
I did mine literally all by myself. Though I knew what I was doing, I've dreaded several friends hair and mine once before, I couldn't see them from behind so it was a gamble. That was February and they've grown up beautifully, I rarely do maintenance just wash every so often and separate some hairs here and there.

I just had my dreads done today at a salon, took 5 hours using backcombing and crochet, and it was pretty painful. Yet i don't regret it they look awesome there's no way i could have done them myself to that standard. Although my scalp is a bit sore but i'm guessing it'll take a few days to settle down :).
I started mine myself. I had a helper that was not into it but I had been turned away by a few salons here in Tennessee. I dont feel I need explain why. Tennessee speaks for itself. So we started with the twist and RIP but she ended up just sectioning it, so they became free form and so far I'm happy with the way they're looking. I had long curly corse hair so they are locking up fairly quickly on their own. I just keep them sectioned and that's it....baby dreds
I'm a little curious as to why you were turned away. My dad moved to Tennessee (Chattanooga area) and I was wondering if there were salons available for maintenance. It seems all of my signs are pointing to just got getting maintenance lol.
First time I started my dreads, it was with friends and WAX, yikes! It did not end up well! they looked cool, but I got an allergic reaction to the wax so I removed them after a year or so. Thinking I could never have dreads again, because I did not know better.. After a long time of not thinking about it, I felt like it was dreadlocks time again, I had leaned much about dreads in the meanwhile and made dreads on friends without wax! So I did it myself and Im super happy with them! :)
+Deondre Morgan Whether a salon is going to use products depends 100% upon which salon you go to. When they are young and short they will lay wherever they like, regardless of where you try and put them. Provided twist & rip and backcomb are carried out correctly, neither should be significantly more damaging than the other. However it's easier to mess up and damage with backcomb.
I'm growing out my hair for dreadlocks part 2. A friend and myself tag teamed my hair. I loved the results. Can't wait to have them again. Last year I helped a friend get dreads but he didn't keep them for too terribly long.
Great comparison! I did mine all myself, didn't really trust any of my friends to do them properly, and I wanted that amount of control. My best advice is, avoid using wax after the first 2 weeks to a month (if you feel you need to at all), once they really start locking up on their own, it only impeeds the process. I can't wait to grow my next set!
when to a salon for almost about a year paid $40. just took them out might grow them back out again doing it on my own this time. i dont regret it, i loved the journey, experience and knowledge i gained with them.
i made mine myself with backcombing method. I wanted dreads for quite a long time and when I was bored I just started dreading my hair. no friends, nobody else helped me but it worked hahah
I did my dreads all by myself. I used mirrors and a lot of determination. It took me 3 days. I finished them on April 18, 2011. My first set came out interesting. After 3 months I was not liking how they were locking up, only 1/4 of my dread was locking and it was about 1/4 of the length of my locks from my roots. The rest was loose hair and looked like a rats nest. I had very small locks. I fiddled with them for several months and even added extensions. After 14 months I took them out and re-did them, in July of 2012. I made thick locks this time, but they didn't sit right with me and did not like how they fell in my face. 8 months later, March of 2013, I took out the really big locks and the ones I didn't like. I liked this set better, but still some grew too thick and others were too flat. I cut several dreads in half (In to two locks.) in January of 2014. I kept the hair from my removals and crocheted in a netting made from very thin mats of hair, around my cut locks. It worked to protect the cut hairs and you can't tell which ones were cut. I now love my dreads; loop de-loops, bumps, flat dreads, curly ques and all. After having dreads for 3 years I have learned a lot about them. They grow like deviant children and roots of a tree, They will do their own thing without your permission, developing loops, zigzags, curly ques, and flatten out in areas. Let this happen, for they will become uniquely yours. Here are a few things to keep in mind; Definitely backcomb as tightly as you can. A crochet hook works good to get them into shape when creating them, and should be used sparingly only after the first few months. Get, or make, a dread tam for bad hair days. Adding extensions to baby dreads will not hinder the locking process. Products are not necessary to achieve dreads, Time and patience is your hairs best friend, though at times you will hate them. Oh and keep them clean!
Got my locks in yesterday at a salon. Backcombing and crochet method. Did a very good job but as you said, very pricey but it is worth the investment if your keeping them in the long term which I plan on doing!
Just had a friend do my dreads last weekend. I definitely would have preferred going to a salon but honestly couldn't find ANY I thought had sufficient experience with straight, fine hair. I'm glad I was able to find a friend who was excited and committed to good dreads, but there was clearly a lot of stuff we could not have known and while I am loving my dreads, there are things I would have done differently. I could redo them but ugh what a pain!! Lol
I started one myself, I'm happy with them bc getting them done professionally often is painful bc of how tight and close they r to ur scalp. Doing mine myself I got to have more say over the thickness and the method used along with how close to my scalp I started them. I always make mine a bit looser at the top for comfort and an aged look but doing the back of ur head urself is difficult, not so much the dreading, but the sectioning so I had my sister help me with the sections and I dreaded what she sectioned out
I have partial dreads right now. Started them myself, with the help of a couple friends! Had to re-do the first one. And took out a few others that were ill-placed. I have 8 on one side and 2 on the other. So glad I started with a few bc I am learning how to maintenance them!
Dreads I have now I did 100% myself and 100% without product. These are dread set no. 3 for me, gone through first set down to hips from face, done twist and tease, then second set I didn't keep long made with crochet hook technique. My girlfriend is considering it, not sure what direction to take. I advise most against professional dread perms, I think it only takes dedication to it to come up with professional looking locks without any other people or products, it just goes from a single day full of chemical shampoos to have a full head to about 3 weeks to 2 months for the home made ones to "mature" and "fully seal". Great video.
In the process of telling my family and work place about the journey I am about to embark on. The only reason I want to wait is so my hair can get a few inches longer. I have curly hair that lays a little below my chest. I want my dreads to be long. Could I start now? Or should I wait until my hair grows like I was going to do?
+Tori Smith if you wait it won't really add much because the hair does shrink up if you let your hair get 6 inches longer you would probably only add like 3 or 4 inches to your dreads
I am about to start locs next month via salon. My hair is to my butt ( 8 years no scissors lol ) its very very expensive but I cant do neglect because of work. Your videos are so informative...I love the way you explain things. Bless Mr. Lazydreads. And thanks for the info...also she uses no product. Cant wait to start the journey.
My dreadlocks are only a week old. I have a little under half of my head done. I went to a Solon to get mine. She was really nice and only used what I asked her to use. She even went out of her way to buy it herself. The only thing I do not like is how she did the twist and rip method. But I was open to try it. I think I’m going to do a mix of twist and rip sections and backcombing sections.
I just started my third set. My first set my now husbands best friend did them. 2nd set he did back I did front. This set I did them 100% myself sectioning and all. Back comb each set and won't go any other way. Freedom from salon freedom from daily upkeep.
Started mine with backcombing went to twist and rip for most then some I said F* it they will loc themselves. I tried to get help from my other half she did not seem to excited to do it(nicely saying) So I had done them all myself. Eveyone I hungout with made fun of me because of all the funny ways i would sit doing messing with my hair cause my arms felt like they were going to fall off.
I started my dreads at home, got someone to do the back for me, and sectioned as I was dreading. I dread doing that, lol, but they all came out pretty good. plenty of different sizes, and I have one congo out of my ~40 some dreadlocks. :) For now, at 3 months, I've been crotcheting to bring in the huge loops back to the dreadlock body. That's about it, here's to another 3 months ! :D
I had a wonderful (see: patient) friend start my locks, she did the parts and some back combing. I back combed the rest myself and looked like Sideshow Bob for a while (not a very flattering look for a lady). Tired of tying my hair up in a wrap all the time, I found a locktitian who does only crochet hooking method. I've been seeing her for about 6 months and love the look. Haven't had any negative effects and hoping that my locks will start to look more mature on their own as I ween off of her. :) If I could change one thing I would have definitely had a professional start them so they could be parted more evenly and to the thickness I had in mind. I love my locks regardless because they are mine and describe my journey but that's just me :)
I began my dreads using the rip and twist method. I did my dreads myself; but I am a licensed cosmetologist. if i could redo them i would plan out my sections more, only because i have a lot of loose hair. i am waiting for the loose hairs to get a bit longer to crochet them into the rest of the dreads.
i got the top of my head dreaded about a year ago and I still got em. I got help from a friend who did em with, a plastic comb! & the twist and rip method for a few I backcombed them after they came undone she had learned from doing hers. but everyone's hair is different backcombing worked for me and I'm planing on expanding them to the rest of my head because I love them so much it's very good to have friends with the same interest in dreads as it is a lot of work. @Lazy Dreads How old are your dreads and did you do them?
The first time I started my dreads at home, I was pleased with my results. I took them out, and then re did them again about 6 months later. I then took them out for a second time. Lol the third time I went to a salon, I paid 800.00 for them to do my dreads and add some length. It was totally worth every penny! They used the back comb method and VERY little product. The best part about going to the salon was that I didn't have to do anything except sit there. And while my bum was asleep most of the time, it sure beat my shoulders, hands and neck from hurting doing them on my own. I wash them once a week and I don't use product. I just let them do their thing. I've had them for a little over a year now and I don't intend on taking them out.
I've had my dreadlocks done twice! And paid a fortune! First time I flew down to Melbourne from Brisbane (Australia) to go to a salon that specialised in 'organic' dreadlocks using a 'special' crochet method that they had pioneered, that apparently doesn't damage the hair. They convinced me to get synthetic extensions (because of the apparently bad ethics of the human hair trade) and charged me $1500 to do them. My hair is fine so they sectioned the hair into very thin dreads, so some of them are thinner than a pencil. After 7 months of putting up with the synthetic hair I decided to have them replaced with human hair. The synthetic ones were so scratchy and I hated the smell. Nice clean natural hair dreads don't smell, but synthetic hair has a weird scent and it bothered me. So this time I found a salon closer to home who did the backcomb method. $1100 later and I have human hair dreads. They joined a few of them together because they were so thin, so I have a couple of nice fat ones now which gives nice texture amongst the thin. Now 16 months later they are still misbehaving but I am generally much happier. They are softer and smell nice. It is just the thickness that bothers me and the joins. Some of the thin ones have stretched at the join so they are like a mobile phone cord thickness. Some people have tried to sew these up with cotton but they still keep stretching out. Not sure how to fix that...

i started my dreads about 2 months give or take a couple weeks I started them by myself I used rubber bands to help them stay together I watched a couple of videos of youtube about dreads and how to start them. well yeah......oh almost forgot I used the backcomb method
I agree with Chris, in that you don't have to "re-do" dreads... even if you fuck up and they get loose... Your hair will still dread itself regardless of your fault. So DIY dreads are the way to go, because no matter how great they look from a loctician or a good friend with no experience w/ dreads, the result is the same. Your hair knows what to do... so give it a break and stop training it with the comb. And as always, good luck ! :)
My hairdresser sisters did mine for me. They wanted me to go to a salon but I managed to convince them to do it. Took about 8-9 hours overall, so I probably saved a lot of money. I don't think my sisters understood how expensive a salon would have been since they were saying they'd pay for it since it was my 18th. The sections they did were pretty much as good as could be since they're experienced, when it came to backcombing though it took them a few dreads to feel confident they were doing it right. Couldn't have been happier with how it went though.
i had dreads for a year and i got them done at a salon. i got them again but i did them myself with the help of my mother for my hair on the back of my head.. the results are about the same. i actually like how they turned out when i did my own
My dreads: T&R, 3 mos old, did them myself. Took about 3 1/2 weeks to complete. The only product I use for maintenance is simply t/gel. Other than that, I leave them alone. They r doing very well so far. I'm entering the second stage....
Hi, I'm strongly considering having dreadlocks before going on holiday this summer and after this video I think I will chose salon dreadlocks. However I have a few questions before getting them I hope you can help. Is it fine to go swimming in the sea + lake even when the dreads will be a couple of weeks old? Is it fine to tie new dreads? Finally can any/most hairdresser do dreads or are they quite difficult to find? (btw I live in France, don't know if that makes a difference) Thank you for the answers you can provide Lazy Dreads :)

I just got my dreads at a salon and they used a lot of chemicals..and i have brown hair now, i would like to have it a bit lighter tho..would u recommend dying, lemon juice or perhaps nothing? I really dont wanna lose my lovely dreads but i would like to be a bit blonder again..
I wouldn't recommend trying to lighten them straight away as bleaches and dyes require a lot of intensive rinsing to remove excess which can be very rough on brand new dreadlocks. Lemon juice can sometimes be used to lighten hair, but it is a very slow process that requires a lot of sunlight.
I'm getting mine done in 2 weeks at a salon. I don't have anyone to help me and I don't trust my abilities :P it's costing me $250 (Australian dollars) and an hour drive there and back but I'm happy to do that :)
my friend did my dreads, and they are doing ok. Unfortunately I am a mother of three and currently don't have enough time to maintain my dreads like I want and I'm finding that I have loose hairs that are beginning to lock into multiple dreads. 😔 I'm thinking about going to a salon to get them maintained, would that be wise? So that I'm not risking my dreads getting stuck together?
Question: I originally got my dreadlocks twist and ripped/crocheted professionally. now that I’ve had 5 months under my belt. I’ve noticed the original portion that was dreaded looks drastically different from the new growth that has dreaded. What are comments/info you could provide? Will they always look different? I also don’t do any maintenance to new/old growth
What advice would you give someone who is considering dreadlocks, but a) they are kind of young and b) their parents don't really like the idea of dreads? I've been thinking about dreads for a while now (mainly to help me be happy with the way i look), but I'm afraid that my parents wouldn't support it and wouldn't understand why exactly i wanted dreads. I do have some connections to people who have dreadlocks and know a lot about them, but I have yet to tell them about my interests. Any advice?
All by my lonesome...1st set I only had 21, so a month later, I took then out, let my hair revive abit, then put in this set. Took me 11 hours! Pretty sure this is what finished off my carpal tunnel..=/ lol. I now have 59.The thing I would have done differently...Better sectioning, way less maintaining...pretty sure it was a waste of time...and I would have NEVER blunted my tips, it all fell out, and I prefer the loose end look. Oh and I would have done all twist and rip.
I did all my dreads myself & I know each one individually. Yes, it took me about a month to finish it, but it was an amazing journey in itself :) I can now do dreads so hook me up in Ireland. Athboy to be exact! Lots of love for you & your channel ;)

question: I had done my own dreadlocks and they were already naturally forming but I had just wanted them sectioned and im wondering , since I had left my roots loose do they stay like that or do I need to do anything in order to tighten them or help the dreadlocks lock. I dont know cause I saw one of ur videos where you had said to leave them alone cause the knots just form by themselves and others had said you need to palm roll them and/or put rubber bands ._.
I had someone section my hair then I spent five days, pretty constantly backcombing by myself. I am in my 2 or 3rd week now, I started using no products at all. Half way through bac I combing I started using" Murrays gel loc lock" now i use that same product deluted in salt water spray. I figured if I put the time and devotion into my locks then they will be prodigious. Great videos by the way, I did allot of research before starting mine and your videos are very helpful.
I just got dreads freshly put in and I have hair down to my shoulder. The girl that did it at my barbershop tied down my locks almost in a braid to the back so it's not everywhere. The question I have is will this affect how long it takes to lock up or will it lock faster like she mentioned to me?
did them by myself, took 4 days, then 4 days crocheting to tighten. only regret is I wish I'd sectioned them all first then started because I have a few oblong roots haha
I've had my dreadlocks for a week and three days. I washed them on my week mark and will wait an additional week before washing them again. I used the twist and rip method but people with salon dreadlocks talk about how their roots were so tight it was uncomfortable. Mine have loosened up about an inch so far (which I know is normal to expect) they are still very knotty throughout but were never that tight to begin with. My ultimate question is whether it will effect it in the long run or not? Should my roots have started off that tight? Thank you in advance for taking your time to help me!
Celeste Nalley As long as there are enough knots to keep the lumps of hair sectioned off, it's not going to make a difference. You can start off with them as tight as you want at the root... they're still going to come loose before they tighten again.
My best friend sectioned and back combed my hair for me. It took about 30 hours over 2 weeks. My hair was long to start with so it was a long process. My dreads are 4 months old now. I use beeswax once a week because it is so dry where I live and it helps with frizz. I have 33 dreads.
So I started my dreads almost a week ago and I used the twist and rip method and now they look pieces of hair that are wrapped together and they are really loose at the top and just loose in general is that okay? Will they still form? I'm very worried lol can u plz help I don't have that much knowledge on dreadlocks and I'm just worried:/ plz answer😁
Stephanie Leslie Young dreadlocks will loosen - especially once they start to get washed - it takes months for dreadlocks to tighten, mature and lock up properly. However of course there is a limit - it's expected that they'll loosen... but if they loosen too much, they'll just wash out. They may loosen too much if the hair is too soft/conditioned, the hair is too short for the chosen starting method / too short for dreadlocking in general, or if the starting method is executed ineffectively.
I had a friend section my hair before I did the twist and rip method on them, my hair was only around 3" long so they were pretty short when I started, but I wanted my locs to start their journey small.
just starting the growing process, I have always wanted dreadlocks but I was in the military so it wasnt gonna happen now I am free from that contract and ready to start growing my hair.
my dreads were done poorly and now they just want to combine and I have to separate them everyday. and so on some parts of my head like the back it looks like a layer of fuzz and it doesn't really looked sectioned. when they mature more and tighten will this change or is this normal.
Just did my first and only dread with the twist and rip method.. lol not sure if i did it right but it is indeed a strand of knots. Is it okay to wrap/decorate when it's this young? Lazy Dreads
Cindy Renderos I would recommend only decorating them with things that you can take out and move around so as to avoid thin patches forming under the decorations.

I started mine myself. And I really have no friends who can do hair AT ALL. So I sectioned mine the best I could. If I could do something differently... Idk maybe I would have tried to find someone to help. But like I said. I didn't have any friend to ask.
I started mine September 2017 with a friend, but I am to the point where I want to just free form with no gels or waxes. Yes I have had them cleansed since then lol my question is, in your opinion, what is the best way to maintain free formed locs
Had a friend do my dreads. She did them via backcomb. I did love them but the drastically different sized sections caused me issues down the line. Now I want dreads again but I want to make sure they get sectioned better. I would prefer to do them myself, but maybe pay someone to section my hair for me.
The way I got my dreads was I didn't clean and brush my hair for 9 months and let the knots get bigger and bigger. The only downside really is that it takes a really long time but, you get really unique dreadlocks and is really worth it. :)
If you've got the time, appreciate the natural aesthetic and are in a situation that allows you to freeform dreadlocks, then it's the only way to go!...however... you really should clean the hair..
My sister has dreaded my hair twice. First time was about 6 years ago and she used wax and it was just a mess. She used backcombing for the bottom half of my hair and a different method for the top half mostly used for natural coarse hair and it didn't work for my curly hair. I brushed them out that time. The second time was about 3 years ago and I did a salt rinse like a week or so after getting them and it really caused my scalp to burn, itch, and was extremely painful and left my scalp beet red. I had to cut them out. Each time they lasted 2-4 weeks. Been really wanting dreads and I think I need to go to a salon. One of my friends told me to just wash my hair with like Irish Spring bar soap and don't brush my hair. I want a little more structure in my dreads and neglect isn't what I'm looking for with my hair. I'm trying to decide when I should dread my hair as I have various lengths with fringe and regrowth from when I shaved the sides of my head. Not sure my hair would look right with longer dreads on the top half of my hair and short dreads on the bottom half. Anyway love the vids.
Treida Malkemus With regards to the length - the majority of people going into dreadlocks will have some variation in length across their head. As long as the shortest length is still longer than the minimum required length for the method used, then it should still all work out ok. Even if the length is perfectly even across the whole head, dreadlocks will develop different depending on their placement and still won't all come out the same size.
I had a side shave when I started my locks and got extensions although for a while just had shorter sides and it didn't look weird at all, was just harder to tie up than if they were even lengths. Good luck!
I had my bf's mother section for me and then I "slept" for the night (very unpleasant..the pulling on my scalp made it hard to get any sleep) then the next day the bf and I went on a 7 hour road trip and I just started rip n' twisting myself. My mom and bf did the back of my head, I finished the other side. Took 2 days.
My locks are 1 year and 6 months I went to a salon. They used wax and I went back but when I did they washed the wax out and didn't use it again I have made sure I have no wax left but I wish I did my dreads myself. But I love my locks they are my little pets on my head haha happy locking
I did mine myself at first had them for about 4 months then I got a job interview and my parents forces me to take them out so now I'm thinkin about getting them again but in a different style like a small thinner style, best thing about taking them out is that u can decide if you want a new style or not coz I mean it took me 7 and a half hours to do my entire head on my own using the twist and rip method then closer to the roots I used the back comb method it seems to work best (for anyone out there trying to figure out why the roots are lose)... Also best way to dread new growth is the back comb method much easier and u don't get sore fingers and/or blisters on ur fingers and make sure u was ur hair before u dread ur new growth or its becomes oily and slippery making it harder to dread u need clean hair (wash with shampoo only once and only shampoo)
I'm thinking about dreads. I am mixed, 1/2 black, 1/2 white. My afro is about 4" and very thick and curly. What method would you suggest for the locking process, and how long do you think I should let my hair get first?
Erik Thomas The method will depend on what you want to get out it - each method has it's own pros & cons, it's own process, it's own end results - something that may fit perfect for one person may be a nightmare for someone else. Each method will also have it's own hair length requirements.

Thank you so much for not beating up on the "salon" route! I'm a semi-professional loctician (self-trained, multiple methods, freelance), and I get so tired of hearing everyone talk badly about ALL "professionally-made" locks!
I personally am a loctician who will NEVER EVER use wax (I got suckered in on my own first set, then saw the horrors of wax when I cut them off. NEVER AGAIN - wax is not for dreads!). Yes, I use a crochet hook (depending on hair type), but I have also spent a good portion of my adult life testing hooks and methods on different types of hair, so I don't shred hair. I attach extensions, because why the heck shouldn't people have long dreads if they want it?
Not everyone can afford to start locks with the neglect method - some people need to look halfway decent for work or school or just because they feel like it (I'm also a model and performing mermaid, so at least part of my dreads needed to be presentable at first). Whatever way someone chooses to start their dreads is up to them and there's no right or wrong - except wax, that's always wrong - and we're all human, so no-one should be judging others' dreads or methods :)

I did my own with help from a few friends - twist and rip. I'm now a qualified natural loctician! At Organic Earthy Dreadlocks.
To be honest, my hair has always been extremely knotty no matter how many times a day I would brush it...so about a month and a half ago I stopped brushing my hair and let it dread naturally. I guess you could basically call them "true" neglect dreads or whatever lol, however, I do not regret them at all and they are maturing pretty quickish. You're videos help alot!
I went to a salon (dreadfactory, pretty well-known in Germany) because I wantet a good base for my dreadlocks. I still don't know anyone else with dreadlocks and I didn't want to do it myself because I can't see the back of my head (obviously :D) and if my friends would have done it wrong, I think they would not be my friends anymore! :D
And it was a lot faster, it took me 6 hours and now I have 43 great dreadlocks without any wax or other bad stuff and I who that I can ask the guy who made them, if I have any problems.

I just have one dread, and I started it myself because I like my smooth hair but I wanted just one dread before I head to college. I did the 'Twist and PULL' method (I refuse to say rip :-P ) and it took me 7 days to complete. I did it myself while watching lots of movies! They are now 15 months old and I could not be happier with them!
I have a comment for the people who so whole heartedly defend one way over the other and get angry about it; Why must you get so defensive and argumentative when someone makes their Dreads a different way? You prefer neglect method, she prefers back comb, they prefer twist and pull. It's personal preference really and for you to judge someone for starting their dreads a different way is absolutely insane. Have you tried starting dreads with each method and compared the outcome on your own head? Oh, no? Well then you have no idea what way is 'better'. You only know what method YOU would prefer. I wish there weren't so many elitists in the dread community. Everyone is beautiful in their own way no matter what and it goes the same for dreads. I am glad I didn't do neglect! That amount of patience isn't my thing. Also, I would much rather prefer not to look like a rat made a nest in my hair. (Although I did have some bird nests, I am sure ;-) )
I did mine literally all by myself. Though I knew what I was doing, I've dreaded several friends hair and mine once before, I couldn't see them from behind so it was a gamble. That was February and they've grown up beautifully, I rarely do maintenance just wash every so often and separate some hairs here and there.

I just had my dreads done today at a salon, took 5 hours using backcombing and crochet, and it was pretty painful. Yet i don't regret it they look awesome there's no way i could have done them myself to that standard. Although my scalp is a bit sore but i'm guessing it'll take a few days to settle down :).
I started mine myself. I had a helper that was not into it but I had been turned away by a few salons here in Tennessee. I dont feel I need explain why. Tennessee speaks for itself. So we started with the twist and RIP but she ended up just sectioning it, so they became free form and so far I'm happy with the way they're looking. I had long curly corse hair so they are locking up fairly quickly on their own. I just keep them sectioned and that's it....baby dreds

First time I started my dreads, it was with friends and WAX, yikes! It did not end up well! they looked cool, but I got an allergic reaction to the wax so I removed them after a year or so. Thinking I could never have dreads again, because I did not know better..
After a long time of not thinking about it, I felt like it was dreadlocks time again, I had leaned much about dreads in the meanwhile and made dreads on friends without wax! So I did it myself and Im super happy with them! :)

Whether a salon is going to use products depends 100% upon which salon you go to.
When they are young and short they will lay wherever they like, regardless of where you try and put them.
Provided twist & rip and backcomb are carried out correctly, neither should be significantly more damaging than the other. However it's easier to mess up and damage with backcomb.

I'm growing out my hair for dreadlocks part 2. A friend and myself tag teamed my hair. I loved the results. Can't wait to have them again. Last year I helped a friend get dreads but he didn't keep them for too terribly long.
Great comparison! I did mine all myself, didn't really trust any of my friends to do them properly, and I wanted that amount of control.
My best advice is, avoid using wax after the first 2 weeks to a month (if you feel you need to at all), once they really start locking up on their own, it only impeeds the process.

when to a salon for almost about a year paid $40. just took them out might grow them back out again doing it on my own this time. i dont regret it, i loved the journey, experience and knowledge i gained with them.
i made mine myself with backcombing method. I wanted dreads for quite a long time and when I was bored I just started dreading my hair. no friends, nobody else helped me but it worked hahah
I did my dreads all by myself. I used mirrors and a lot of determination. It took me 3 days. I finished them on April 18, 2011. My first set came out interesting. After 3 months I was not liking how they were locking up, only 1/4 of my dread was locking and it was about 1/4 of the length of my locks from my roots. The rest was loose hair and looked like a rats nest. I had very small locks. I fiddled with them for several months and even added extensions. After 14 months I took them out and re-did them, in July of 2012. I made thick locks this time, but they didn't sit right with me and did not like how they fell in my face. 8 months later, March of 2013, I took out the really big locks and the ones I didn't like. I liked this set better, but still some grew too thick and others were too flat. I cut several dreads in half (In to two locks.) in January of 2014. I kept the hair from my removals and crocheted in a netting made from very thin mats of hair, around my cut locks. It worked to protect the cut hairs and you can't tell which ones were cut. I now love my dreads; loop de-loops, bumps, flat dreads, curly ques and all. After having dreads for 3 years I have learned a lot about them. They grow like deviant children and roots of a tree, They will do their own thing without your permission, developing loops, zigzags, curly ques, and flatten out in areas. Let this happen, for they will become uniquely yours. Here are a few things to keep in mind; Definitely backcomb as tightly as you can. A crochet hook works good to get them into shape when creating them, and should be used sparingly only after the first few months. Get, or make, a dread tam for bad hair days. Adding extensions to baby dreads will not hinder the locking process. Products are not necessary to achieve dreads, Time and patience is your hairs best friend, though at times you will hate them. Oh and keep them clean!

Got my locks in yesterday at a salon. Backcombing and crochet method. Did a very good job but as you said, very pricey but it is worth the investment if your keeping them in the long term which I plan on doing!
Just had a friend do my dreads last weekend. I definitely would have preferred going to a salon but honestly couldn't find ANY I thought had sufficient experience with straight, fine hair. I'm glad I was able to find a friend who was excited and committed to good dreads, but there was clearly a lot of stuff we could not have known and while I am loving my dreads, there are things I would have done differently. I could redo them but ugh what a pain!! Lol
I started one myself, I'm happy with them bc getting them done professionally often is painful bc of how tight and close they r to ur scalp. Doing mine myself I got to have more say over the thickness and the method used along with how close to my scalp I started them. I always make mine a bit looser at the top for comfort and an aged look but doing the back of ur head urself is difficult, not so much the dreading, but the sectioning so I had my sister help me with the sections and I dreaded what she sectioned out
I have partial dreads right now. Started them myself, with the help of a couple friends! Had to re-do the first one. And took out a few others that were ill-placed. I have 8 on one side and 2 on the other. So glad I started with a few bc I am learning how to maintenance them!
Dreads I have now I did 100% myself and 100% without product. These are dread set no. 3 for me, gone through first set down to hips from face, done twist and tease, then second set I didn't keep long made with crochet hook technique. My girlfriend is considering it, not sure what direction to take. I advise most against professional dread perms, I think it only takes dedication to it to come up with professional looking locks without any other people or products, it just goes from a single day full of chemical shampoos to have a full head to about 3 weeks to 2 months for the home made ones to "mature" and "fully seal". Great video.

In the process of telling my family and work place about the journey I am about to embark on. The only reason I want to wait is so my hair can get a few inches longer. I have curly hair that lays a little below my chest. I want my dreads to be long. Could I start now? Or should I wait until my hair grows like I was going to do?
+Tori Smith if you wait it won't really add much because the hair does shrink up if you let your hair get 6 inches longer you would probably only add like 3 or 4 inches to your dreads
I am about to start locs next month via salon. My hair is to my butt ( 8 years no scissors lol ) its very very expensive but I cant do neglect because of work. My dreadlocks are only a week old. I have a little under half of my head done. I went to a Solon to get mine. She was really nice and only used what I asked her to use. She even went out of her way to buy it herself. The only thing I do not like is how she did the twist and rip method. But I was open to try it. I think I’m going to do a mix of twist and rip sections and backcombing sections.
I just started my third set. My first set my now husbands best friend did them. 2nd set he did back I did front. This set I did them 100% myself sectioning and all. Back comb each set and won't go any other way. Freedom from salon freedom from daily upkeep.
Started mine with backcombing went to twist and rip for most then some I said F* it they will loc themselves. I tried to get help from my other half she did not seem to excited to do it(nicely saying) So I had done them all myself. Eveyone I hungout with made fun of me because of all the funny ways i would sit doing messing with my hair cause my arms felt like they were going to fall off.

I started my dreads at home, got someone to do the back for me, and sectioned as I was dreading. I dread doing that, lol, but they all came out pretty good. plenty of different sizes, and I have one congo out of my ~40 some dreadlocks. :)
For now, at 3 months, I've been crotcheting to bring in the huge loops back to the dreadlock body. That's about it, here's to another 3 months ! :D
I had a wonderful (see: patient) friend start my locks, she did the parts and some back combing. I back combed the rest myself and looked like Sideshow Bob for a while (not a very flattering look for a lady). Tired of tying my hair up in a wrap all the time, I found a locktitian who does only crochet hooking method. I've been seeing her for about 6 months and love the look. Haven't had any negative effects and hoping that my locks will start to look more mature on their own as I ween off of her. :) If I could change one thing I would have definitely had a professional start them so they could be parted more evenly and to the thickness I had in mind. I love my locks regardless because they are mine and describe my journey but that's just me :)
I began my dreads using the rip and twist method. I did my dreads myself; but I am a licensed cosmetologist. if i could redo them i would plan out my sections more, only because i have a lot of loose hair. i am waiting for the loose hairs to get a bit longer to crochet them into the rest of the dreads.
i got the top of my head dreaded about a year ago and I still got em. I got help from a friend who did em with, a plastic comb! & the twist and rip method for a few I backcombed them after they came undone she had learned from doing hers. but everyone's hair is different backcombing worked for me and I'm planing on expanding them to the rest of my head because I love them so much it's very good to have friends with the same interest in dreads as it is a lot of work.

The first time I started my dreads at home, I was pleased with my results. I took them out, and then re did them again about 6 months later. I then took them out for a second time. Lol the third time I went to a salon, I paid 800.00 for them to do my dreads and add some length. It was totally worth every penny! They used the back comb method and VERY little product. The best part about going to the salon was that I didn't have to do anything except sit there. And while my bum was asleep most of the time, it sure beat my shoulders, hands and neck from hurting doing them on my own. I wash them once a week and I don't use product. I just let them do their thing. I've had them for a little over a year now and I don't intend on taking them out.
I've had my dreadlocks done twice! And paid a fortune! First time I flew down to Melbourne from Brisbane (Australia) to go to a salon that specialised in 'organic' dreadlocks using a 'special' crochet method that they had pioneered, that apparently doesn't damage the hair. They convinced me to get synthetic extensions (because of the apparently bad ethics of the human hair trade) and charged me $1500 to do them. My hair is fine so they sectioned the hair into very thin dreads, so some of them are thinner than a pencil. After 7 months of putting up with the synthetic hair I decided to have them replaced with human hair. The synthetic ones were so scratchy and I hated the smell. Nice clean natural hair dreads don't smell, but synthetic hair has a weird scent and it bothered me. So this time I found a salon closer to home who did the backcomb method. $1100 later and I have human hair dreads. They joined a few of them together because they were so thin, so I have a couple of nice fat ones now which gives nice texture amongst the thin. Now 16 months later they are still misbehaving but I am generally much happier. They are softer and smell nice. It is just the thickness that bothers me and the joins. Some of the thin ones have stretched at the join so they are like a mobile phone cord thickness. Some people have tried to sew these up with cotton but they still keep stretching out. Not sure how to fix that...

i started my dreads about 2 months give or take a couple weeks I started them by myself I used rubber bands to help them stay together I watched a couple of videos of youtube about dreads and how to start them. well yeah......oh almost forgot I used the backcomb method
I agree with Chris, in that you don't have to "re-do" dreads... even if you fuck up and they get loose... Your hair will still dread itself regardless of your fault. So DIY dreads are the way to go, because no matter how great they look from a loctician or a good friend with no experience w/ dreads, the result is the same. Your hair knows what to do... so give it a break and stop training it with the comb.

My hairdresser sisters did mine for me. They wanted me to go to a salon but I managed to convince them to do it. Took about 8-9 hours overall, so I probably saved a lot of money. I don't think my sisters understood how expensive a salon would have been since they were saying they'd pay for it since it was my 18th. The sections they did were pretty much as good as could be since they're experienced, when it came to backcombing though it took them a few dreads to feel confident they were doing it right. Couldn't have been happier with how it went though.
Are your dreads supposed to go straight back until they are older and longer or I can have them in any direction like in my face
i had dreads for a year and i got them done at a salon. i got them again but i did them myself with the help of my mother for my hair on the back of my head.. the results are about the same. i actually like how they turned out when i did my own

My dreads: T&R, 3 mos old, did them myself. Took about 3 1/2 weeks to complete. The only product I use for maintenance is simply t/gel. Other than that, I leave them alone. They r doing very well so far. I'm entering the second stage....
Hi, I'm strongly considering having dreadlocks before going on holiday this summer and after this video I think I will chose salon dreadlocks. However I have a few questions before getting them I hope you can help. Is it fine to go swimming in the sea + lake even when the dreads will be a couple of weeks old? Is it fine to tie new dreads? Finally can any/most hairdresser do dreads or are they quite difficult to find? (btw I live in France, don't know if that makes a difference) Thank you for the answers you can provide Lazy Dreads :)

I just got my dreads at a salon and they used a lot of chemicals..and i have brown hair now, i would like to have it a bit lighter tho..would u recommend dying, lemon juice or perhaps nothing? I really dont wanna lose my lovely dreads but i would like to be a bit blonder again..
I wouldn't recommend trying to lighten them straight away as bleaches and dyes require a lot of intensive rinsing to remove excess which can be very rough on brand new dreadlocks. Lemon juice can sometimes be used to lighten hair, but it is a very slow process that requires a lot of sunlight.

my friend did my dreads, and they are doing ok. Unfortunately I am a mother of three and currently don't have enough time to maintain my dreads like I want and I'm finding that I have loose hairs that are beginning to lock into multiple dreads. 😔 I'm thinking about going to a salon to get them maintained, would that be wise? So that I'm not risking my dreads getting stuck together?
Question: I originally got my dreadlocks twist and ripped/crocheted professionally. now that I’ve had 5 months under my belt. I’ve noticed the original portion that was dreaded looks drastically different from the new growth that has dreaded. What are comments/info you could provide? Will they always look different? I also don’t do any maintenance to new/old growth
What advice would you give someone who is considering dreadlocks, but a) they are kind of young and b) their parents don't really like the idea of dreads? I've been thinking about dreads for a while now (mainly to help me be happy with the way i look), but I'm afraid that my parents wouldn't support it and wouldn't understand why exactly i wanted dreads. I do have some connections to people who have dreadlocks and know a lot about them, but I have yet to tell them about my interests. Any advice?
All by my lonesome...1st set I only had 21, so a month later, I took then out, let my hair revive abit, then put in this set. Took me 11 hours! Pretty sure this is what finished off my carpal tunnel..=/ lol. I now have 59.The thing I would have done differently...Better sectioning, way less maintaining...pretty sure it was a waste of time...and I would have NEVER blunted my tips, it all fell out, and I prefer the loose end look. Oh and I would have done all twist and rip.
I did all my dreads myself & I know each one individually. Yes, it took me about a month to finish it, but it was an amazing journey in itself :) I can now do dreads so hook me up in Ireland. Athboy to be exact! Lots of love for you & your channel ;)

question: I had done my own dreadlocks and they were already naturally forming but I had just wanted them sectioned and im wondering , since I had left my roots loose do they stay like that or do I need to do anything in order to tighten them or help the dreadlocks lock. I dont know cause I saw one of ur videos where you had said to leave them alone cause the knots just form by themselves and others had said you need to palm roll them and/or put rubber bands ._.

I had someone section my hair then I spent five days, pretty constantly backcombing by myself. I am in my 2 or 3rd week now, I started using no products at all. Half way through bac I combing I started using" Murrays gel loc lock" now i use that same product deluted in salt water spray. I figured if I put the time and devotion into my locks then they will be prodigious. Great videos by the way, I did allot of research before starting mine and your videos are very helpful.

I just got dreads freshly put in and I have hair down to my shoulder. The girl that did it at my barbershop tied down my locks almost in a braid to the back so it's not everywhere. The question I have is will this affect how long it takes to lock up or will it lock faster like she mentioned to me?
did them by myself, took 4 days, then 4 days crocheting to tighten. only regret is I wish I'd sectioned them all first then started because I have a few oblong roots haha
I've had my dreadlocks for a week and three days. I washed them on my week mark and will wait an additional week before washing them again. I used the twist and rip method but people with salon dreadlocks talk about how their roots were so tight it was uncomfortable. Mine have loosened up about an inch so far (which I know is normal to expect) they are still very knotty throughout but were never that tight to begin with. My ultimate question is whether it will effect it in the long run or not? Should my roots have started off that tight? Thank you in advance for taking your time to help me!
Celeste Nalley As long as there are enough knots to keep the lumps of hair sectioned off, it's not going to make a difference. You can start off with them as tight as you want at the root... they're still going to come loose before they tighten again.
My best friend sectioned and back combed my hair for me. It took about 30 hours over 2 weeks. My hair was long to start with so it was a long process. My dreads are 4 months old now. I use beeswax once a week because it is so dry where I live and it helps with frizz. I have 33 dreads.
So I started my dreads almost a week ago and I used the twist and rip method and now they look pieces of hair that are wrapped together and they are really loose at the top and just loose in general is that okay? Will they still form? I'm very worried lol can u plz help I don't have that much knowledge on dreadlocks and I'm just worried:/ plz answer😁
Stephanie Leslie Young dreadlocks will loosen - especially once they start to get washed - it takes months for dreadlocks to tighten, mature and lock up properly. However of course there is a limit - it's expected that they'll loosen... but if they loosen too much, they'll just wash out. They may loosen too much if the hair is too soft/conditioned, the hair is too short for the chosen starting method / too short for dreadlocking in general, or if the starting method is executed ineffectively.

I had a friend section my hair before I did the twist and rip method on them, my hair was only around 3" long so they were pretty short when I started, but I wanted my locs to start their journey small.

my dreads were done poorly and now they just want to combine and I have to separate them everyday. and so on some parts of my head like the back it looks like a layer of fuzz and it doesn't really looked sectioned. when they mature more and tighten will this change or is this normal.
What advise would you give me if I only had one dread? I started a month and a half ago.
Just did my first and only dread with the twist and rip method.. lol not sure if i did it right but it is indeed a strand of knots. Is it okay to wrap/decorate when it's this young? Lazy Dreads
Cindy Renderos I would recommend only decorating them with things that you can take out and move around so as to avoid thin patches forming under the decorations.
Hey bro idk if ull responded but its pretty cool tht in January i started my dreadlocks nd I would look at a whole bunch of ur videos to inform my self nd they actually help me nd motivated me to keep my dreads ppl tell my a whole bunch of bs sayin tht i should get them professionaly done nd tht their bad but thts how ppl are not knoin a thing about dreads nd think they know everything but its obv has to lock they don't magically look like dreads would of been cool if they did but thanks bro keep making videos Ps. Let's say I want dreads but I only want them to be a certain length. Can I get them cut and maintain a certain length?
I went to a loctitian she's amazing. No product back comb and crochet. My only regret in my year with dreads is all the unneeded Palm rolling haha

That would depend how long your hair is after 7 months.
I started mine myself. And I really have no friends who can do hair AT ALL. So I sectioned mine the best I could. If I could do something differently... Idk maybe I would have tried to find someone to help. But like I said. I didn't have any friend to ask.
I started mine September 2017 with a friend, but I am to the point where I want to just free form with no gels or waxes. Yes I have had them cleansed since then lol my question is, in your opinion, what is the best way to maintain free formed locs
Had a friend do my dreads. She did them via backcomb. I did love them but the drastically different sized sections caused me issues down the line. Now I want dreads again but I want to make sure they get sectioned better. I would prefer to do them myself, but maybe pay someone to section my hair for me.
I have really short hair and I want dreads when my hair is long again but is there a way to have dreads now? I mean like 2 or 3?
The way I got my dreads was I didn't clean and brush my hair for 9 months and let the knots get bigger and bigger. The only downside really is that it takes a really long time but, you get really unique dreadlocks and is really worth it. :)
If you've got the time, appreciate the natural aesthetic and are in a situation that allows you to freeform dreadlocks, then it's the only way to go!...however... you really should clean the hair..
My sister has dreaded my hair twice. First time was about 6 years ago and she used wax and it was just a mess. She used backcombing for the bottom half of my hair and a different method for the top half mostly used for natural coarse hair and it didn't work for my curly hair. I brushed them out that time. The second time was about 3 years ago and I did a salt rinse like a week or so after getting them and it really caused my scalp to burn, itch, and was extremely painful and left my scalp beet red. I had to cut them out. Each time they lasted 2-4 weeks. Been really wanting dreads and I think I need to go to a salon. One of my friends told me to just wash my hair with like Irish Spring bar soap and don't brush my hair. I want a little more structure in my dreads and neglect isn't what I'm looking for with my hair. I'm trying to decide when I should dread my hair as I have various lengths with fringe and regrowth from when I shaved the sides of my head. Not sure my hair would look right with longer dreads on the top half of my hair and short dreads on the bottom half. Anyway love the vids.
Treida Malkemus With regards to the length - the majority of people going into dreadlocks will have some variation in length across their head. As long as the shortest length is still longer than the minimum required length for the method used, then it should still all work out ok. Even if the length is perfectly even across the whole head, dreadlocks will develop different depending on their placement and still won't all come out the same size.

I had a side shave when I started my locks and got extensions although for a while just had shorter sides and it didn't look weird at all, was just harder to tie up than if they were even lengths. Good luck!
I had my bf's mother section for me and then I "slept" for the night (very unpleasant..the pulling on my scalp made it hard to get any sleep) then the next day the bf and I went on a 7 hour road trip and I just started rip n' twisting myself. My mom and bf did the back of my head, I finished the other side. Took 2 days.
My locks are 1 year and 6 months I went to a salon. They used wax and I went back but when I did they washed the wax out and didn't use it again I have made sure I have no wax left but I wish I did my dreads myself. But I love my locks they are my little pets on my head haha happy locking
I did mine myself at first had them for about 4 months then I got a job interview and my parents forces me to take them out so now I'm thinkin about getting them again but in a different style like a small thinner style, best thing about taking them out is that u can decide if you want a new style or not coz I mean it took me 7 and a half hours to do my entire head on my own using the twist and rip method then closer to the roots I used the back comb method it seems to work best (for anyone out there trying to figure out why the roots are lose)... Also best way to dread new growth is the back comb method much easier and u don't get sore fingers and/or blisters on ur fingers and make sure u was ur hair before u dread ur new growth or its becomes oily and slippery making it harder to dread u need clean hair (wash with shampoo only once and only shampoo)
I'm thinking about dreads. I am mixed, 1/2 black, 1/2 white. My afro is about 4" and very thick and curly. What method would you suggest for the locking process, and how long do you think I should let my hair get first?
Erik Thomas The method will depend on what you want to get out it - each method has it's own pros & cons, it's own process, it's own end results - something that may fit perfect for one person may be a nightmare for someone else. Each method will also have it's own hair length requirements.
Question.. If im planning on getting dread locks should i be combing my regular hair back? I usually brush it forward and brush the sides down
Hi Jonathan, I'm not entirely sure what you're trying to say... you can brush it however you want up until you actually start them.
