A common question is - what are the benefits of sectioning your hair before starting dreadlocks. This question is often asked after someone has started their dreadlocks...
What usually happens is this: Someone decides they'd like dreadlocks, they get excited about dreadlocks, they do a little research about dreadlocks and learn how to make them, they create one test dreadlock just to see whether it works... then they create another and another and before they know it, they've got a whole head! Creating dreadlocks is fun and addictive, so once you've started, it's hard to stop. The problem that then arises is that spontaneous dreadlocks are rarely ever sectioned. Sectioning is boring and creating dreadlocks is fun... so.
Anyway, after a little time the differences between sectioned and unsectioned dreadlocks start to become apparent, leading the people with unsectioned dreadlocks to worry and wonder whether they've done the right thing. So I'm going to go through the main differences between sectioned and unsectioned dreadlocks.
First a quick introduction to sectioning for those who don't know what I'm talking about. Sectioning is when you well.. section off the hair into... sections for creating dreadlocks. What this basically means is you carve up the scalp into (usually) squares and these squares of hair are what go on to form the dreadlock, they become the root of the dreadlock you're forming. Sectioning can either be done one at a time - create a square section, create a dreadlock, repeat. Or all at once by creating a whole head of sections, held with elastic bands and then going back to create the dreadlocks.
So what are the benefits of sectioning? Sectioning allows you to decide where the roots are going to go and therefore decide where the dreadlocks are going to go - you can position the dreadlocks wherever you like. You can also decide how large the sections are going to be and therefore you have some control over the thickness of the dreadlocks. If you do not section, you do not have quite as much control - you still have more control than you would with the natural/neglect/freeform method, because of course you still choose which lumps of hair you're going to create the dreadlocks from, but it's not as accurate as having sectioned first. Some people might prefer the more randomised nature of non-sectioned dreadlocks.
The main problem with not sectioning is that the young dreadlocks are far more prone to congoing/fusing/merging together. When you section the hair you scoop up all the hairs that grow in one particular section and form them into a dreadlock. A perfectly sectioned head would have every single hair neatly stored away in it's correct section - which would be underneath the dreadlock that it should grow into. If you don't section you can end up with very strange sized roots that can overlap. One dreadlock might be pulling in hairs that really should be growing into it's neighbour dreadlock. There can also be little patches of hair that have not been included into a dreadlock at all! All these non-sectioned roots can greatly increase the chance that the dreadlocks will start to stick together at the roots. Now let me say that sectioning, even perfect sectioning is by no means a guarantee that the dreadlocks won't stick together, but it really, really helps.
So if you have unsectioned dreadlocks, is it recommended to take them out and start over sectioned? I would recommend starting over if you are unhappy with the size or positioning of the dreadlock or if you have a low pain threshold (I'll come back to that). Dreadlocks take a long time to start and to then spend all the time required to take them out, section and restart is only worth it if you are unhappy with the fundamental layout of the dreadlocks. Having unsectioned dreadlocks will mean that more separating is required, now this involves taking dreadlocks and pulling them in opposite directions to stop them sticking together - this can be quite painful. Once you've separated them enough you'll have split the dreadlocks right down to the roots and they'll grow the same as sectioned dreadlocks - so it really comes down to how much extra separating you can really deal with.
My recommendation is to section whenever possible. Any measures that can reduce the amount of separating you have to do to young dreadlocks is a bonus in my book. There are no rules that state you have to make the sections neat and uniform, you can make them as different as you like to still achieve a random, disorganised look, but while still saving yourself some of the stress involved from unsectioned dreadlocks.
I started my dreads with no sections just grabbing pieces and it's really made it look like free form dreads so honestly I would rather prefer non sectioned dreads
How did you 'do' your dreads? I'm doing the same just grabbing wher I feel too how the are naturall forming to as not brushed since Jan. I've twisted n ripped about 10 random ones sofar so good with a bit of back combing then rolling through my fingers with palms together 👍 all the best 👍
i really wish you'd show pictures comparing what you're talking about
I stopped brushing my hair 40 days ago. So far, I've gone with neglect/natural/freeform. I spend a little time each day following the sections up to the root. I do spend a little bit of time separating the few pieces that are locking together. I have a few small dreads that love to hang out together during the day, so I'm pulling them apart more and more. I know it may not be for everyone, but I love the time it takes to separate them. It's therapeutic for me. And I love that the sections aren't perfect. Also, I love your videos. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and opinions. I'm learning a lot from all sorts of dreadheads. It's nice to see and read about everyone's experiences with dreads. :)
How did it go? Are you still happy with them and could you stop them joining together?
How’s it going
I just have to laugh because the first few minutes of your video was EXACTLY what I did. "Hmmm, I think I want dreadlocks..I think I'll just do one and leave it for a few months to see how it works out" googled a couple things. RUclipsd a few "how to's" and did one in the back of my hair. It wasn't even 30 minutes later that I decided to just go ahead and do them all! By myself in a mirror. A WEEK later I decided I hated the part and the lack of sectioning. Brushed out half of them 0__o and halved them (almost doubling the amount of locks) and changed my part. That was fun:/ good news is they are fine now! Just about another week in. I just thought it was hilarious that you described me to a T!
me too! hehe!
Same 😭
ME TOO😂😭
i did that too but i started with braids first
Thank youuuuuuuuuuu . I'm so excited about my dreadlock journey I'm 150% committed. You've answered so many questions I really appreciate you doing this !
This video deserves more than 1.3k likes... he broke it down to the T. Very clear, direct and simple.
@MaakasSs The ripping of the dreadlocks to separate them will only really risk damage in very thin dreadlocks. Provided the separating is done semi-regularly there should not be any significant solid dreaded connection between the dreadlocks, just some connecting hairs. When you rip these the dreadlocks that you're pulling should be a lot stronger than the connecting hairs and so the hairs will break before you damage any of the dreadlock. In very thin dreadlocks there can be problems in that the connecting hairs can almost be as strong as the thin dreads and so more care is needed.
You hit it right on the head by saying “ People who already started without sectioning and are now worried” Couldn’t be me 😅🥲
So glad I found your videos and I'm researching like I am. Going to start my first ever dreads in a few weeks and I couldn't be more excited!
I did unsectioned with a crochet hook after discovering I had a single loc that managed to lock itself down to the root😂 Which made the decision easy for me since I missed my old locs. Took me 3 days about 3 hrs each day. I had shoulder length hair in a curly afro(mixed hair is WILD😩) personally I love that I have different size dreads all over. The uniform salon-started locs I used to have were boring to me and retwisting 110 dreads by myself for 2 years felt like a chore. Now I have 80 and it's super fast when I'm not as concerned about sections being perfect. A more organic, free look which i absolutely LOVE
Edit: when I said I missed my old locs I meant I missed having locs in general lol.
No questions for you as of yet, i just wanted to stop by and say that you are the best person to go to for dread lock information. I have watched countless people on RUclips, asked people in person on what i should do. Didn't really like their answers, didn't feel right to me, but yours have. Your locks look wonderful and i hope mine get as beautiful as yours one day :) !!
I'm glad that my videos have been helpful for you! :))
What about half assed sectioned hair?
So glad I watched this!! I made my first baby dread underneath last night and have been tempted to make more, your intro was spot on for me, now I think ill comb it out before it's too late and section my hair, I still think I want to ease into it and work my way up to a full head of dreads tho don't have the time or patience to do it all at once :)
I've not sectioned my hair and takes separating quite often which is good for me as I'm always playing with my hair ....i like my method because it is like my personality which is unpredictable and it's not about fashion or looking neat for me this is my reason everyone to their own that's why I like this specific style everyone is unique
I just want to say thank you for taking time to make such informative videos about dreads. I'm sure it takes a lot of time. This video came out at the perfect time. About 2 weeks ago I brushed out the 13 unsectioned dreadlings that I had. I regret that now because, I've been lazy and haven't done hardly any dreading! :( I'm literally about to just make them as I go and not even section them. Again, thank you for the video and please continue with them!
I have extremely thick, type 2a/2b hair that I dreadlocked a month ago. Almost all of it fell out leaving me with only 14 dreadlocks but I left my hair alone and focused on doing the neglect method. It is quite funny for me, because the natural dreadlocks that are showing up, are itty bitty pencil sized. So, I am just waiting patiently for enough hair to dread then come together to make thicker ones.
Haha that was me. I did the best I could to section. But I lacked help and the money to get them done professionally. So I tried to section myself. They are be no means perfect squares! But I actually tried vs free forming so I haven't had any issues yet. I'm a month in now.
I somewhat sectioned mine. I wanted different sizes for a natural look so I would section off like 8-10 on one day and then more another day. I made the ones around the crown of my head thicker for more volume and the rest are anywhere from pencil thin to a rope size. I most definitely have to separate them at least once a day. The new dreads love each other a lot! I think the first week I ended up ripping apart a couple. Great video, btw.
I made 3 dreads on the bottom row then wanted some more so I sectioned another row and ended up with 7 yay! I love them 😍!! Even with only 7 they’ve already given me more volume in my fine hair. They look lovely!!!
You described exactly what happened to me with my dreads. I got excites after back combing one and 12 hours later had a fully dreaded head. Now, two years later, they are in fact harder to maintain as opposed to either because the sections are all over the place, the roots are growing out frantically and dreading together and I'm constantly ripping them apart when o feel like I should be enjoying nice mature dreads. I'm in the process now of combing them out so I can start a second less hasty set. I'm hoping this will alleviate some of the issues I'm having now and lead to less maintenance by the two year mark.
My locks are still really young (about 3 or 4 months and woah, they started to lock up waaaaay sooner than i thought lol) but i have this one conjoined lock right at the bottom of my head. I had decided i wanted to do freeform but one of my neighbors told me ill end up with bubble dreads lol so i started ripping dreads that were trying to join together but the one super lock i have kinda escaped my grasp. Over the passed few months i was slowly trying to rip it apart, and i was making some progress, but it started to seem like the smaller tip of the 2 that joined was gonna end up getting ripped out completely so i ended up just leaving it alone lol
I was feeling kinda self conscience about it but ive come to love it ! The journey is slow but oh so rewarding! 😁
An interesting thing to note... I sectioned all my squares to be the same size, however not all the dreads are the same size, because apparently there are part on your head where their are less hair follicles and finer hair such as just above and to the front of the ears.
yo bro have you got any merch?
I love the idea of a lazydreads sticker.
I started my journey about 5 weeks ago with unsectioned dreads. The scalp webbing can be offputting, no question. Even having a person do a month maintenance, they found LONG sections of hair that appeared out of the blue. No clue how they got missed...but now they have to be added to random dreads. If you aren't patient...and can't stand crazy hair...dreads may not be for you. I am at peace with them doing what they want, for the most part. Your hair becomes like a conjoined twin...with a personality of it's own.
you can section them ,use dreadwax back comb each section. Then form them with your hands or rubbing the length down each dread with an old all wool knit sweater or sock ( rub the wool down each section like you rub a stick to start a campfire). Then just let em go. Once you have the ground work done you just use monthly maintenance. Dry shampoo is nice. But a nice deep clean with a cap full of castille soap ,cup of apple cider vinegar in 2 cups of very warm water. I use a big bowl to pour over my brothers hair cuz his dreads i did them for him when he was 13 now hes 31 and they are now to his butt. So get him to lean over the tub and pour some over and work it into the scalp and kind of knead it into the dreads. We then rinse it and do it again until theres no more mixture( about 3 times). You can make a dread refresher spray with teatree oil,cap full of olive oil and cup of waternin a spray bottle( just to spray on once in awhile to freshen dreads, kill bacteria and add sheen and moisture in).
hexagonal section is best . no gaps will be seen no stretchmarks. it dont need to be perfect hexagon make circular sections . and put small dreads on the top medium at the front and lateral sides and big ones at back of your head where your head touches the surface when u are sleeping because if u put small ones there they might get fused or turn out funny. also its nice to put a few small sections nesr ur ears so when they get matured u can braid them it looks very cool and unique to have a few brauded dreads ;)
I love your eyebrows!
same
You literally just described exactly what I did. Lol😂 it isn't sectioned properly and it's not twisted and ripped all the way to the scalp. Will it eventually get tight to the scalp???
So helpful, You may have just saved my dreads before its too late!!
also, even with sectioning you have no guarantee that they will have the same size. there are few hairs on the side+neck = thinner dreads and the matureing also effects this.
I sectioned my dreads and kind of just left them alone and they started looping and sticking together and such. its feeling like a lost cause trying to get them to have clear sections again.& I'm pretty sure my sectioning was really crapily done 😂 cos I have a ton of loose hairs..I'm wondering how I can fix that..not sure I have the patients for palm rolling cos for me , it doesn't exactly work so well anyways..I'm wondering if crocheting my loose hairs in my dreads would be optimal. I started with twist and rip btw.
Before I had my hair backcombed I stop brushing it for months, allowing it to sort of section naturally, then when it came time to backcomb she tried to stick with where my hair sectioned naturally. They are all different sizes so far, which is fine with me. I am only 5 months in though, so it's too early to tell what the outcome will be. - just wanted to share my personal experience.
0:49 Aaaaahah this totally happened to me like 5 minutes ago! xD But I straightened it back out with a giant needle. Your videos are very helpful! Subscribed! :D
I'm not saying this is why I "don't" want squares but according to some sacred mathematicians a right angle "traps" the spirit..I know that sounds so radical but may be one "spiritual" reason some people don't want to start with boxes.. lol
Have you gotten them done yet? I just followed the natural waves in my hair and since my hair style has been the same for some years now the dreads fell in the same place.I did the twist and rip, unsectioned and left to free form,I have 3-4 long rounded roots that hang above one another like he was explaining about how they're prone for Congo dreads awesome,to think I was going to donem over
I was freeforming for bout 8 months an got tired of waitin since i have mixed hair thats straight/curly but still puffs out like a fro an i just crocheted curls together and it worked pretty good. Not really any with combined roots and if it is its just a few strands that i pull out. Kinda wish I sectioned but my hair was already pretty nappy so it woulda been hard to rip the curls apart
Oh i love Your dreads, i just started my own channel and my dreads just hit 3 months !
Very good place you have here...I am thinking about getting dreads once my hair grows out..I have been working on my very own hairstyle since about march after starting off with my head completely shaven..I do love the looks of dreads but need to do some more research..also debating on the idea of a native American scalp lock.
LOL!! Yeah...from 0:35-1:16 pretty much sums up my thought process and how I made my dreads about 10 months ago! After I did so, I underestimated how dreads would become thicker, so my first dreads were huge and I had to split several into two...which was annoying. Some of my parting also left patches of scalp showing which I had to fix.
Found this video late! Combing out my 1-month-olds to restart with sectioning. Much cleaner looking and maintainable
Your videos are so helpful!I have wanted dreadlocks for a long time and I'm leaning so much from your videos! Its really helping me decide things for a future reference of how I want mine to go(etc). Thanks! Also did you section your hair or just left if unsectioned?
I sectioned mine but unfortunately I can't see the back of my head very well and that is the area on me that loved to dread up all on its owe so I ended up with a lot of webbing that I could not fix easily because I can't see it and it became painful at times. I brushed out all my dreads and when I go go on vacation to visit family I'm gonna get my Mother to section it for me so I can start with a better foundation. God I miss my dreads so much. And I strongly recommend as lazydreads does to wait til your dreads are mature before adding extentions. If you don't the weight of them will pull the bottom of your dreads out. Plus if you add extensions before your dreads are mature it's hard to gage what width to make them and you may get them to thick. Just my 2 cents
It's so true! When i realized I first wanted dreads I made a couple just in the back to see what it would be like. But i ended up taking them out and i hired a professional loctician to do my hair. Apparently I have a lot of hair tho cus i only have partial dreads (half my hair) but it still looks cute. When I have money again I will hire her to do the rest. 😊
I didnt section mine. I have VERY thick hair and did a lot of smaller dreads. I just tried to keep them more or less even as I went at it with Twist and Rip. I dont regret it. The backs a little iffy but its more or lest fixed itself. A little clockwise rubbing while I separate keeps the roots from going all cray cray.
i dont even know why i thought of this haha but i think your viewers should be called dreaders haha
My dreadlocks are not really sectionned, i just took random hair and i backcombed it and then crochet
My dreads aren't really sectioned. Well, they are kinda but just randomly. Some dreads are thin, some are bigger. Sometimes I had to cut off small hair sections from one dreads and crochet to another oder dividing one into two dreads completly because they pull on the scalp too much. But now after 10 months they are almost all with a round shaped root section. And I love them just how they are.
Viel Saitig Getting them to how you want them is all that really matters - even with a neatly planned out sectioning pattern you never really know how they're going to 'sit' once they've started to form up.
First I wanted them all equal and well sectioned. But now I am super happy that they aren't and love every single one of my 82 :D Btw, I really like your dreads!
I love your dreads. So much. Just thought I'd tell you that. :)
Can I section once I already locked my dreads without sectioning?
Question about how many dreads do you have? Because I am just starting & have freeform at the roots they are getting locked & knoted but I need help because I don't want them to be to thick or to thin
Also is it normal for hair to fall out?from a knoted section
i have unslected Lock and lots of you told is true ..but one thing you can chose what size they can be,but all thins are true, its harder to take care about them.
Wonderful ..your tutorials are awesome
Glad you like them!
In short, you may aswell section them because it will look better but Upto you
Love your dreads!! I'm thinking of getting dreads too for a long while. What method did you use?
kassanova Backcombed, then neglected.
Yea I ripped my free form into section bout once a week there around the same thickness but a few wild cards. All sectioned, so if u do free form dreads u can section it once you start getting really nappy knotty hair with baby dreads formin then I ripped the dread away from the rest around it and that made a section and that sized the dread roughly as the hair I seperated it from made new baby dreads that I then did the same thing to once they get to the size or when ever I got around to seperating them lol just cuz it did hurt a bit sometimes in the earlier stages but everything soon got in its own "lane" and tightened up
Can you dye your hair while its in dreads? or will it ruin the dreads
You're wearing a Phil X t-shirt. Yes man, yes!
AlexSupertr4mp1 Yes indeed! :)
So I have had neglect/freeform dreads for about 3 months now, and I love them! But I don't like how *specifically* the front part isn't sectioned. How do I go about re-sectioning my dreads?
i am halfway through my head and havent sectioned one bit... my hair has naturalish dreads because it is tangly. so i just went with it....
So, I went to a salon, to see what I can do with my hair. I want them as big as yours and she sectioned my hair and told me I'll only have like 16 dreads (I don't remember exactly) with the thickness I wanted? How many do you have? Did you sections? Did they start out smaller and get bigger? She told me I'll need some extensions if I wanted them bigger with more dreads?
Hi lazydreadz. I'm growing my hair now to have dreadz in the future. If I sectioned the hair and put a small band at the root to keep them neat when making the dreadz, in your opinion would it help keeping the bands in while the dreadz are young? Or will that hinder the matting process? Thanks for all the info you share I have learnt a lot 😊 ✌🏻️
The ends of my dreads are curling up like a hook, is that because my hair was curly?
The Sundie Experience If you have curly hair then the loose parts of the dreadlock will still be curly.
My first dreads were sectioned. And I hated it so bad that I took them out. The main reason was, cause I have very thin hair with a small face. Having unsectioned hair is annoying, cause your dread wont go the way you want it to go. But I must say, I find unsectioned hair very pretty if you have a small face and thin hair. Unsectioned dreads is the best thing to do If you want your face to look bigger. Haha
Omg ! What he said the twist and rip XD and how its addictive im kinda doing that idk if i want too :o
Double headed dragons kongos gotta love it😭💯
i had unsectiond dreads for about 3 weeks and ended up brushing them out to section and redread. no my hair is much thinner. would it be worth dreading them now? would the grow to look like clubs ?
Hi... i like ur videos they are helpful and they are fun to watch .. they have helped my alot with my dreads... i had a problem that my dreads didn't dread now after ur help they dread litle too fast 😅its good that they dread fast but i got to like almost daily rip them apart ... i was wondering isnt the ripping damaging the dreads/hair somehow or unhealthy or some?
Hey, thanks for your videos they have been a massive help!
I have decided to section my dreads, except I didn't want that 'grid' look over my scalp, so I got someone to do a brick work pattern... is this going to be a problem as my dreads mature?
I didn't section mine and did exactly what you said bwahahahahaha so true I like the messiness 😂😊
Ariana Allen I also did what he said I grabbed a spot did twist and rip liked it so my one turned into 6 the two weeks later half my head then one Netflix marathon later my whole head except my bangs have been done they look ok it's been a month new growth and the shrinking but only one inch of shrinking so maybe I did mine to tight so then I used a conditioning oil to loosen them at least the tight ones I wash once a week with Neutrogena residue free shampoo I've hit the should I take them out and section them and start over then I'm doing the RUclips binge hoping to find answers I didn't do big dreads my biggest one or about half my head there the size of a Sharpe pen I have 5 that are very thin I'm getting worried and doing the fence hop should I start over should I wait I don't mind doing mine myself that's the least of my worries but if mine are sectioned small and I dont mind keeping them separated I play with them every night before bed checking rolling spots twisting where the roots have grown I guess I'm just worried to much or I'm just at that funky stage the beginning of my dreads I just want the best information I've ordered dollylocks products and my son wants his head done now and his I'm gonna do brick laying sections in different sizes sorry I'm rambling but I watch videos mostly just Lazy Dreads and right now my sons hair is how LDs hair was before he started his dreads I just want them done better for my son....
same hope it gos ok
Okay, so I only have two dreads, one of each side underneath my hair. They are unsectioned and been so for a week now. Is it okay just to leave them be and section the rest of my head
Once your dreads are mature, and you have the little baby bits growing between before they join up with a dread, can you see the section lines really well or are they pretty hidden?
If the person has particularly thin hair or has their dreadlocks physically maintained tight at the root, you'll be able to see the lines, but you'd be able to see the lines regardless of whether they sectioned the hair or not, the only difference being that if they sectioned the hair, the lines would be straight. For most people the parts between the dreadlocks can't be seen because other dreadlocks and other hair lays on top.
I did not section my dreadlocks and I am worried about them moving together. I just did them today. I don't want to look ugly :(
If you did them today, I personally would recommend starting again while they're still so very young.
I got rid of them . im going to go get them professtionally done for 100$
+Cat Marie Fair enough then! Good luck on your dreadlock journey!
Best part of this vid has to be the term "hickledy pickledy" XD been binge watching your videos by the way, much love and thanks!
I thought the same. Favorite part.
Higgledy piggledy
I just did unsectioned and kinda neglecting it lol I wonder how it will be
I didn't necessarily section my dreads but, at the same time, I did. Where do you think I may stand in the foresaid "boat"?
I don't want my dreads to congo, but I would love for them to more natural look that you had mentioned in the video. What do you think I could do if any of them do start to congo? I know that you can pull them apart repeatedly, but look at this as an effort to discontinue (not entirely) the possible congoing? (should I use a crochet hook?)
Sectioning is in no way a guarantee that you wouldn't have a lot of separating to do, it can just reduce how much work is initially required. Everyone - sectioned or not is going to have to separate their locks to stop them from merging together. Normally quite a lot is needed over the first year while the locks are still forming and are softer. As they get older they won't need quite so much work, but you will need to do some separating over the entire life of the locks in order to stop them from congoing. Crocheting wouldn't help in this respect.
Hi I started dreadlock and I have 5 i tried to select them but there not perfect ly square shape will that mess up my dreadlock alot
So if I have loose hair at the root that isn’t going into the dreadlock should I crochet it into the root? Like pull it in to the dread or just leave it? I have straight hair....
Question...when I started my dreadlocks (about 5-6 weeks ago) I sectioned them but they aren't in perfect square or triangle sections (I.e. some are wider or longer or more... Rhombus shaped? I dont know its just odd shapes). Anyways the result is some dreads are thick and some are thin, which im perfectly fine with, but will it effect the dreads in any way?? Will they be ok in the long run? Will they dread normal? Im also having some on the back of my head web together at the roots. Can I fix this anyway? Maybe putting a wrap on one or something??
Thanks :) and I really appreciate everything you do for us clueless dreadheads out here! ♡
Shailee Dingler As long as they're not extremely thick or extremely thin, it will likely not be an issue - even if you sectioned everything equally, there would still be variation. Young dreads will knot into each other and require regular separating - the frequency that this separation is required will diminish over time.
That first part is so accurate it’s scary 😂 I have short hair and I would like dreads, but last time I tried to dread my hair, the dreads stuck up and I looked like a crazy clown any advice?
Little Mack Art maybe u can try with adunghi extension
So I'm starting my dreadlock journey. But I have only just begun. I want to do them one at a time because I want each one to mean something. I have 2 right now. Self acceptance & positivity. But I was wondering if it would be harder for me since I'm doing my dreads one at a time?
lala rodriguez When you have dreadlocks and regular hair at the same time it can become difficult. You have to continue to brush and condition the normal hair to keep it from getting tangled, but while also not brushing or conditioning the dreadlocks. The dreadlocks will also try and knot up the surrounding regular hair, so it can become quite a lot of work to stop everything from just matting up.
Mmmm u could do a baking soda and apple vinegar shampoo only thing and start in the front but it my only advice is use a string or strings to like make the dread and once its in the string tied of along the dread u want so the hair is secure and equally tight . And if u did the dry no shampoo wash with ur hair I use baking soda and apple cider vinegar u can look it up for more info, but that will make ur hair um easier to "knot"? I suppose or just more effected to friction. So if u take that strand of hairs u section off with string circles along the dread and shower with it and really drentch the dread in the shampoo mixture u make and clean out till water runs clear. But if u do that then dry it and the next day or even later that night run that dread in the hands mini circular motion not too much to pull the hair loose but enough to get it gritty and very "rough" as u look at it it will get very tangled I believe this done regularly not too much like one every other day or even up to once a week on regular shower routine the hair will stay dry dread only thing u might just want to comb ur rest of ur head cuz it will dread if u don't on dry shampoo. Just make shire the tips are tightly tied and watch daily for loose hairs trying to infiltrate the dread ur making just pull it apart if so.
Great video! I had dreads, freeform, and regret not sectioning. I ended up with a mess and had no choice to cut my hair off :'( (I tried combing them out to start again but my hair was down to my butt and I was in hospital without the use of one arm) I cannot wait for my hair to grow long enough for dreads again, next time I'll section my hair off. One question to anyone who can answer, how short can hair be to dread without looking silly? I'm assuming something like shoulder length? I have very fine curly hair, I lost 2/3rds of the length with my dreads which were just past my shoulders. I just would like a rough estimate :)
I'm sorry to hear about your first set!
The minimum length that I recommend for starting is 6 inches. It's technically possible to start them shorter, but I would not recommend it and since you mentioned the looking silly part, I don't think it's something you'd be interested in anyway! With regards to the minimum non-silly length....well... that really depends on where you'd draw the line. It's also very hard to give an accurate estimate as to how much they'll shrink, but yes, I'd say shoulder length is a good place to start.
How did you start your dreadlocks? And how do you keep it from looking weird at 1st. I know its going to look strange, but i dont like when the dreads start at the scalp. Can I leave an inch of root or would that cause problems?
Thank you!!!
I started with backcomb. They're gonna look like young dreads while they're young, there's not a whole lot you can do about that. You can start them as close or as far from the scalp as you like, but you're not really going to be able to stop them from locking closer to the scalp as they mature.
haha, this was so me!!! I got all excited, did i little dread behind my ear and loved it, but it gradually came out, sometimes i put it back in, hehe!! * ^_^ *
I find it so funny how at the beginning of this video you said it's really easy to twist and rip and before you know your whole head is twisted lol because man I'm here watching this video after I just twist and rip y entire head myself. since this just happened I don't believe it would too hard to go to a salon and get them redone right?
I got to exited to dread my hair that I didn't
Even think about sectioning it.. And I've had them for 2 weeks! Do I still have time to section it? Or do I just leave it like that? Idk what to do lol because I don't want them boxed up but then I don't want them to start forming in together...
Melissa Sanchez Once they are started you cannot 'section' them - they would need to be taken out to allow them to be reorganised and sectioned. Sectioning however does not mean that they will not start to form together - they will knot together whether they're neatly sectioned or not - sectioning can just reduce the overall amount of work required to keep them separated. Once they're been started all that you can do is keep on top of the separating.
Great, now I'm insecure about the neglect method I started a few weeks back :( what should I do? Start putting rubber bands on my roots to control it a little? The square sections aren't really my thing.
cerecitahn You don't / can't section freeform dreadlocks, they have to be separated apart as they form.
so i have to wait until they start forming to separate them?
Lazy Dreads I did the twist a Rip method as well as the back combing. And like you said, I got excited and one turned into my whole head lol. So now it looks good from the front and on the sides but around the back of my head where I couldn't see there is pretty large spaces. I'm fine with my dreads being different sizes but I don't overly like the large gaps. Looks like I am balding or something lol. I've only had them in for about 7 or 8 days now and I haven't washed them yet but there pretty solid little dreadys so will I have an odd looking gap forever now or will they sort of grow and cover that eventually. Or am I going to have to take them out and redo it. Maybe I can just take a few out? Let me know what your think and If you want pictures to make it more clear feel free to ask. Thanks for your time and i hope you can help me :)
Peace and love
Kaleigh Wiltsey It depends on what is meant by a "gap" - there is always going to be a line between each dreadlock - the edges of the sections will not perfectly over lap each other - there will be a line in between like when hair is parted.
Lazy Dreads yeah I get that but it's kinda like there's one lone dread in the back of my head and all the others are like 2 to 3 inches away lol. Can I send you a picture somehow ?.
Kaleigh Wiltsey If you're on facebook you can message the Lazydreads facebook page with a picture.
So I totally did what you said and kinda jumped the gun a bit I had to do my dreads on my own and didn't really section them. What I was wondering they are only a few days old should I brush them out and redo them or is there something I can do?
jordan baca It's entirely up to you - the pros & cons are laid out in this video, you will need to decide what you think is best for you and your hair.
Hickled-de-pickled I love that lol
when you do the twist and rip method does it kinda look like twists for the first few months i did this method and alot of people say there not dreads there twist also i was one of those people who did not. section them lol
Do you ever put beads in your breads?
Please help. I made my dreadlocks twist and rip. They're about a month and a half old. Coming along great other than a Congo forming in the very back. About 3-4 little guys joining together. I tried to pull them apart with little luck. Anything else i can do?
miranda mayhem If they can't be pulled apart... you'll need to cut them apart.
What is the neglect method? Just not brushing? Because when I do that I eind up with a huge dreaded mass in the back of my head that needs to eb carefully detangled.

It can require plenty of separating if you want to keep the hair divided out into manageable sized dreads.
how short were your dreads when you started them? and how much do they grow per year?
Hey Aron, you can check out my progress here:
Dreadlocks - 67 Month Dreadlock Timeline
So you can see how much hair I started out with and how they grew.
Different hair is going to grow at different rates and I've never measured from one year to the next... plus I often trim mine, so I'm afraid I can't say how much growth they get in a year. But I can say that over the first year most people will experience more shrinking than growing.
Do young dreadlocks typically come undone at the ends? Most of mine have 1-3 inches undone, if this is normal how can I help this not happen?
jacob skogen Yes, young dreadlocks will come undone at the ends. You can work on them and work on them... but if they're still young, you'll likely find they just keep loosening up again after you wash them and this will remain the case until the body of the dreadlock becomes mature enough for the tips to knot into it.
Is there any way I could purposely leave the ends undone? Like put rubber bands about 2 inches from the ends to keep them from falling out, or do I have to dread it all the way to the end? Is it a bad idea to?
Paige Protonentis Actually starting them all the way to the ends is often more likely to result in loose ends when compared against initially leaving them loose. If you leave the ends undone at the start you'll leave the ends with a lot of movement and freedom and this can often end up allowing the ends to knot into the body of the dread and become "blunted". Whereas if you start them right to the tips, the ends will usually start to loosen up after they get washed a few times - but even though they loose up, they don't have as much freedom to knot themselves as they would have done if they'd been deliberately left undone. I would recommend trying to force them do go one way or another via elastics, I'd just let them do their thing - and chances are they'll stay loose whether you want them to or not ^^ - if they do happen to start knotting themselves at the end, it's a quick fix to just brush the tip back loose again.
I want them to look good and each by them selfs
Ahahaha.. the first few minutes of this video are too real.. I am currently brushing out my unsectioned locks.. to section them.. and then re dread. 😩😂
how do you fix really loose roots? I did the twist and rip method on my boyfriend. He had really really fuzzy, poofy type of hair. We did not section the hair :/ The roots are loose, and webbing together. Yes we're new to this. He's not worried about them a lot, but I am. Because I did them :/
The webbing has to be maintained by separating the dreadlocks regularly. The roots will be loose because the dreadlocks are young. They don't get strong and tight until they've matured.
will the sectioning eventually disappear?
how long was your hair when you started your dreads my hair is mid back so how long do you think my dreads will be?
Ashton Seal I had chest length hair, my resulting dreadlocks were maybe chin length. The amount that the dreadlocks shrink is going to vary from person to person - there is a huge variation. Losses of around 1/3 are "normal", but it's not really possible to go beyond a rough estimate.
